Just got the tab today - few questions - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, just got my tab today and got some quick questions.
1) How long should I charge the battery for the first time?
2) How is the batter life for normal-medium use?
3) How long to charge battery from like 10-30% left?
4) What are the best ways to check the screen and colour to see if it have any defects. I know that Galaxy S2 you type in some code in dialpad but we don't have dialpad for the tab.
5) Any tips or useful things/feature you can share?
6) Are there any common faulties/defects that I should check if I have it?
7) Mine is P7515. What is the difference between that and P7500?
Thanks! I will be doing a lot of readings tonight.

1) Let it charge for 1 hour after it reaches 100% These are not lithium ion batteries so you dont have to charge new batteries overnight like some people do.
2) Find out yourself, just try it.
3) Find out yourself, just try it.
4) Best way to check the screen? Look at it...
5) Yes
6) Yes, With the tablet off check the screen for a faint rainbow colored like ring. This is a screen defect some people have. It usually goes away after a day to two but if doesn't and it bothers just replace the unit. IMO its not a big deal since you can only see it when the screen is off.
7) I dont remember.

1) Doesn't matter. Charge till it's enough for your use.
2) Depends on your definition of normal-medium use. Once again, best to try for yourself.
3) Try it out.
4) If you don't see any with your naked eye, it should be fine.
5) Root,custom rom,OC,remove tw...
6) newton rings i guess? If you have it you'll see it.
7) not very sure, but the p7500 is 3g. is yours 3g?

WiFi only. Maybe that explains the difference.

Things to look out for in a used I9100

Hey guys, a friend of mine is selling his 8 month old S2, and he is willing to give it to me for a good price, I was thinking it would be worth the upgrade (using a i9003 now) and a brand new galaxy nexus is just too expensive (so are the other 720p screen resolution monsters ) since the s2 is still a formidable force and has loads of dev support it seems like a good idea, so this is what I wanted to know.
He is selling it because he gets poor battery life, I feel he has not optimized it right, and in right hands will do well, what is the average you guys get? I'm happy with a day (That's what I get currently on my current phone)
The phone has suffered a strong fall once on a tiled surface, this was more than 6 months ago but the only damage was a cracked screen, the touch response is perfectly fine, there's only a crack on the screen. He will fix it and sell it.
What else should I look out for? He is giving me the phone for a day to check out and use, so I wanna know what all should I check thoroughly, so that I don't buy a lemon , like issues facing the I9100, the screen discoloration, wifi strength, gps, overheating or any other issues I should know about and can be detected. (I got burned once buying a used xperia x10 which used to overheat and restart all the time! was barely even usable!) also any issues facing the early batches, any diagnostics that should be run etc...
Just asking because I'm curious and want to make an informed decision. don't wanna end up with a dud!
Thanks in advance!
Make sure it boots up and and it can take your sim card as it could be network locked , if this be the case unlock apps are on market and within this forum..
Check battery chack phone charges ok. Like anything have a play before you take up their offer..
Check whether the following:
1.Simcard slot
2.Memory card slot
3.all physical buttons
look out for:
1.scratch in camera lens.
2.condition of usb port and headphone jack.
you can leave out the software as it will be ok with a new flash, anyway check the working of all sensors by using some apps from market.

Regarding network lock it is not locked because I'm in india and the phone is from the UK and he has been using it perfectly. One question, how many water indicators are there? just in case I need to check? The usb port doesn't have a cover so it remains open so that's a concern.
@bala_gamer I see you had the same phone as I do now, and I'm contemplating a similar move!
any stress test apps I can run to see if all is ok under pressure?

If it is really a friend, why I are you scared of getting a lemon? Or is it just some guy you know, who is not really a friend?
Real friends don't sell you crap I would imagine?
*#0*# Takes you to LCD test mode. Should be able to see if screen has dead pixels and such.
It feels like no one has really answered your question so far!
I'll give it a shot.
Battery life - you're right, optimally configured SGS2s go a long way - mine will last through a day with 50-60% left over with 2 email accounts syncing (nothing else though, no Facebook, Twitter etc)
The battery life is absolutely not a problem if it's a day you're aiming for.
Problems:
Most if not all cameras have a pink spot in the centre - I don't mind it, but you can see it.
Yellowish left side of display - I have this, it's quite distracting sometimes. However, this was fixed up by the latest kernels, which balance it out a bit better. Mine is also a phone from the UK from 8 months ago, so its safe to assume this will be a problem as well, given the frequency of the problem. Not really an issue for me though with later kernels.
CM9 - ICS will be late to the party on the SGS2 because of closed source drivers - if that's a problem, get a different phone because thats unlikely to change anytime soon!
There aren't really any other problems which I can think of - its a thoroughly good phone!

Thanks man appreciate it, been reading up on the threads here and saw the major things afflicting it are the banding issue, the pink spot, the display faults... anything else?oh and what is the approx cost of replacing the cracked screen? Anyone from india can let me know?
Bump! Guys anyone knows how much a screen replacement is? Anyone from India perhaps?
Oh and guys the camera glass cover has some tiny scratches around it, nothing major but it does have a few, not too deep, but visible, will this have an effect on the quality? Because I couldn't notice anything in the pictures taken, but would like it to be at its best!

[Q] Battery issue

I got my tab 1 year ago and now I have an issue with the battery...
I've got the problem 4 days in a row...
The battery drop to 1-3% in 1 sec.. most of time, it is when I am under 50%
here is an example (french version - 3.1 honeycomb)
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/7580/sc20120624194443.jpg
Sometime, after a reboot, it can move up..(like in the picture) but most of time not...However the tab will stay on 1-3% for a very long time...
do you think it is a defective battery ?
I just reinstalled the tab 2-3 weeks ago (stock), I could do it again if I think it is not hardware related...
I don't think it is a calibration issue, because the battery discharge seems fine
(until it drops suddenly to 2%)
what do you think ?
I don't have a tab 10.1 yet but I am planning to buy the rumored note 10.1. The problem for your battery is a well known problem on the old Galaxy Tab 7 P1000. When the battery drops to about 50%-60%, it would suddenly power off because the battery power is exhausted. Replacing a new battery by Samsung solves the problem. I would suggest send it back to Samsung so that your 10.1 could be thoroughly examined.
Thank you for your answer, 10 days with the problem now...
I think you are right, the battery is dying.
I'm buying a new battery on Ebay for 38 $ :good:
Hi Matrix_19
I did all of the above things and rooted and re-calibrated and replaced battery as well but to no prevail..

Yes, I already had to change a damaged digitalizer on my tab many months ago,
It's easy to open, and you have to remove 3 cables, and the battery is there, easy to replace.
The only challenge is to put back correctly all the cables... it's harder than it seems and if it not correctly connected, the screen will stay black or the touchscreen won't work.
Here is a video to show you the inside : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogVhYYakE6A
whoa... i don't think that's such an easy replace at all. i would need that plastic prying tool. what is the challenge of putting back the cables, is it like hard to aim for it to insert back to the slot? too soft to insert to the slot?

After viewing again the youtube video (with 1080p resolution) it seems there is a little clip that allow to put back the cable without difficulty..
I should look at this, the next time I need to open the box
Found temprory solution without changing battery
I got this problem of sudden drop of battery after flashing custom roms. So i unrooted my device but the problem still prevailed.
Solution i found was quite easy and useful. Drain tab's battery completely with "Auto brightness option selected". Then charge it without switching it on. After its charged switch it on and use. Battery wont drop drop and will give proper output.
NOTE: 1. Dont use customised brightness or else same problem will start again,,,, instead use auto brightness
2. I have found this solution on unrooted device so cant tell if this will work on rooted devices or not.

Contemplating buying XS

So at the moment I have a couple of phones that I really want to buy and the XS is one of them. It is the best financially apparently but there are a few things I need to know. Hopefully y'all can help me. Thanks a lot !
1) Does the white version attract dirt easily and if so is it easy to wipe it off? I know I can just get a case for it but since on the front there is a large area under the capacitive buttons and Im gonna touch that area a lot so I want to know. (Mini rant: why does it have so many visible seams, make the phone look a tard cheap)
2) How is the yellow screen issue? Has it been improved/ fixed? If I have it do you reckon it's gonna be easy to have Sony fixed it? I live in Australia btw
3) Battery life? I saw a lot of people having issues with the ICS update. My normal usage is 2-3 hours checking social networking sites, web-browsing, 2-3 hours of music, probably 15 minutes of games. Do you reckon if it's gonna be enough to last me?
4) Does this phone have any issue with getting coverage? In my house the coverage is terrible for most carriers. I had an HTC sensation and my mom has an s2 and they seem to not be able to hold on to signal any long.
5) So what do the colours look like w/out the Mobile Bravia Engine? I reckon I wont turn it on to preserve battery but I want to know how much it's gonna affect the quality of the screen. And in so many videos the colours do look a bit washed out...
6) How's the GPS? I dont drive but I use apps that use GPS.
That's all. Thanks again

1) I have the white one. It does attract a quite high quantity of dirt. The back is easy to clean. Just use a smooth humid cloth on it. For the lens, it's easier to clean it removing the back cover. The Xperia Logo on the bottom, and on the Camera, HDMI and USB logos on the sides also get dirty quite easily. The dust enters the little "depression" and get stuck in there. If someone knows a good way to clean this, please let me know.
2)It's been quite a long time since the start of the production. Until batch 14, almost all devices had it, on batches 15 and 16 it almost has gone. We must be on batches 30 or 40 by now, so no need to worry.
3)I think it's enough for me, and should be enough for you. Check the battery thread, and look at my posts to see my results.
4)Well, my carrier sucks for that. I badly can enter a corridor on my school without loosing signal. But I also had this with my old X10 MP. I think the coverage is good (not so good now, as I'm using Turkey FW, with a different baseband, but it doesn't make it unusable)
5)I always kept it on, so I can't tell the difference, really. Most people seems to have problems since the first ICS update (I also have this problem, but the screen is still awesome)
6)GPS for that is good for me. I also don't drive (heck, I'm 15 years old), but it is really accurate (with internet connection it's even better, as it have A-GPS)
Hope I helped.

About the batches, do you know how to check what batch it is? Since in Australia the Xperia S doesnt sell very well (I know it since Im working for a phone company now), so I reckon there are a lot of old stock sticking around.
And what is the problem you're talking about? Sorry I should have done my research but Im dong my assignment now and the threads are HUGE

The only way I know is to open the back cover of the phone. On it, there is white sticker with info about the phone. On the right side, there is the phone model (LT26i), another info and something like this, 12Wxx, where xx is the batch, W is week and 12 is year. Mine is W10, so I have the yellow spot. Sadly can't trade as Sony Brazil is horrible.
The problem, I meant is that the Bravia Engine isn't working for most on the ICS update.
No more inputs from anyone?

Hey there,
1. I have the black xps, my friend owns the white version. It does attract quite a bit of dirt but using a case should solve the problem. (recommend nillkin hard case)
2. Yellow screen issue - my first xps had the defect, returned it to the service centre within a week of purchase and got a replacement in 2 weeks. The batch I now have is 12w16. So if it's possible for you to find out the production batch, I recommend you get anything beyond w14.
3. Battery life - immensely dropped after the ics update. Gb battery life was amazing (I'm referring to stock firmware). The issue is due to the phone unable to get enough deep sleep when the screen is off. (culprits being - alarm manager and power saver app, they keep restarting). On stock ics, with 3G constantly on, Wifi for a few hours, display on for about 3 hours, music for 30mins,auto sync on throughout - i get about 12-15 hours of battery life. With auto sync off, I get 3-4 hours more battery life.
4. About network signal etc. The phone doesn't have any issues. But if you're in a low coverage area, it's going to drain your battery even further. One bug I've noticed is that after a few hours or sometimes a day, my data connectivity just refuses to work, in spite of it showing active with the H/3G symbol. Only solution is a restart.
5. I keep my bravia engine off most of the time, honestly I can't really tell the difference cause the screen is one of the best in the market. Love the clarity.
6. Gps - no issues. Fast and accurate.
Hope this helped you.
Cheers!

1. I used to own a XS before upgrade to the Acro S. A white one to be exact. I used a case all the time so there was little dirt to be worry about. I'm sure you'll feel the same. The 3 touch buttons on the front was horrid though.
2. If you buy a brand new one around this time, I doubt you will ever encounter this issue.
3. Battery do fine for me. It's about 3 hours of screen time, not very impressive but not bad at all.
4. Coverage is good. I've ever lost any signal.
5. You'll see a bit different in color, less vivid to be exact but you'll get used to it in tme.
6.GPS is fast and accurate.
Hope this help.
1)I have the older batch, so am having a yellow tint. Will send it for repair when I do have the time. As long as the bootloader is unlocked sony will gladly repaired it for you.
2)sony has said that bravia engine dont impact battery life, so u don't really need to turn it down
3)GPS is really really good, even without A-GPS( data off). Lock into position in seconds!. Must be the whole glonass thing,as other droids I use with data off, will need some time to few minutes to find me.
4)battery life, well as bad as most droids, 5 hours of screen time would drain it almost flat. But fast charging work as advertise, so plug it iN whenever possible,30 minits of charging could get it up around 50%.
5) call signal are really good, well at least I can comform it's better than samsung note, gio & s2.

[Q] SGS2 screen is black, unresponsive, overheats & drains battery.

Hi
My SGS2 is misbehaving badly. These symptoms occur simultaneously several times a day. I do not know what triggers them or how to prevent them. Your help would be greatly appreciated:
1. Screen goes black.
2. Device becomes unresponsive. The only thing I can do is press the power button for ~10 seconds to reboot.
3. The phone becomes very warm to the touch.
4. The battery drains at an incredible speed.
Might be helpful to know:
Device is rooted, naturally.
Once I've rebooted the phone and I go to Settings > Battery the graph there is showing a black gap followed by a drastic drop in battery level. (See attached diagram and screenshot)
I've noticed that this never happens when the device is plugged in to the charger.
I've recently upgraded to Android 4.1.2 (baseband ver I9100XXLS8) which is the official Samsung ROM after previously running on the Samsung beta version of the same ROM.
Thanks in advance!
urig
Either the battery is faulty or this is some hardware failure. Check if this persists if another battery is inserted.
Also - did the phone get wet recently?

Thank you for the quick response. What you're saying makes some sense to me as I've experienced something odd with the battery a couple of weeks ago. I.e. the battery went completely dead and would not charge, then recovered after a day or two. It did not, however, get wet AFAIK
Might I ask - In buying a new battery, should I insist on an original Samsung make or are non-branded alternatives safe to use?
Kind Regards,
urig

[Q] Battery Issue (Fast drainage, phone overheating)

Hi there, and thanks for taking the time to view my thread.
Recently I've had a problem where my phone will get really hot around the camera area just from doing simple tasks like texting and then it will instantly shut off without warning. If I turn it back on, the battery indicator drops from 100% to around 5% and it will turn off again in about 10 seconds. I'm running the latest CM stable build and I've never had any issue with it before, this is just something that has started in the past couple of weeks.
I tried changing batteries as I thought that might be the issue, but when I place my other battery inside the phone to charge it the screen just keeps turning on and going to the grey battery and flicking off. Tried leaving it for a couple of hours like that but no luck. The battery that currently works feels like it's swollen slightly on one side (if that makes sense?) and so I don't really want to continue using it.
If I've been at all vague or you need any more information, tell me what and I'll try my best to get it
Thanks in advance,
Alex.
Your symptoms all point to a bad battery. If the battery swells then it is in a bad conditions. If you can spin thr battery on a flat table then it is not good.
A good battery has flat surface snd therefore u cannot spin it for more than half a round. But a swell battery in your case will spin for a few rounds.
Change a new battery to resolve your problem.
Best Regards

Hi, thanks for replying. I have tried to change my battery with an identical (but flat and brand new) one but as I mentioned in the original post the grey battery icon appears on my screen with the circle inside, and it will periodically flicker to a full green one but it won't turn on.

Do not use any battery that doesn't look normal or is damaged. Old or damaged battery's can even explode/burn sometimes. I have also been having this same issue but, I know my battery is fine because without a micro SD card the phone stays cool and the battery lasts forever but with a micro SD card the battery drops rapidly in charge just like you get from 100% to 5% in a short time period and also gets very hot around the camera area. So if you have a micro SD card in it take it out, at least it works for me:victory:. I've read that this is because the phone is constantly scanning the card (some glitch or bad connection) but i'm not sure. Tell me if this works and give me a "Thanks" if it does!
Can you try with a different kernel and see what happens?

I installed this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2291756 and I'm going to leave my battery for an hour or two and then see if the phone will boot.
Again, thanks to both of you for helping

Install Better Battery Stats and look at the process(es) that are not working properly and are overheating the phone, then try uninstalling and reinstalling the app if it's not a system app, or just flash your rom again to overwrite possibly corrupted system files.

no need of returning phone...i guess its one of many issues discussed over this forum..
1. It can happen because of a Kernel that u have installed that is not going with ur ROM.
2. It could be due to some app that is sucking up your battery and intun causing heating in ur processor..i mean some game..weather widget..Etc..
I would suggest that u can browse thru this forum for the solutions that fit u best..
i think its a kernel or App problem 4 sure..:fingers-crossed:
I am having S2 with ASNET MIUI V5 now and b4 tried several ROMS..When ever this heating stuff happened it was temporary only..
Hope it helps u in some way.
Cheers mate

Hey bernie279, I'd already tried that and didn't really note any difference (it might have been slightly better?) but thanks anyway

The first part of this really comforted me - returning my phone would have been a nightmare! It actually wasn't down to a specific app or kernel I think, in the end I just replaced the battery and it's working fine again
Big thanks to anyone who has helped and if anyone is experiencing the same issues as I am, read through the thread and try the solutions given
