Photon 4G long term test - Motorola Photon 4G

Now that the Photon 4g has been out in the real world, I'd like to express my personal experience's. I've had the Photon since launch day and since then had my device replaced once. Never have I ever had to pull the battery on any device as much as I do on the Photon (At least 4-5 times a week). I truly love the quality of this phone which could only be described in person, but find this device to have an endless amount of bugs. Much more than my Epic 4G dare i say. I am not willing to root this device in order to get it working properly. I payed full price and think it should work properly out of the box.
Sadly, I will return this device in exchange for the Samsung Epic Touch when it comes out being that i am still in the 30 day window. Hopefully, I'll have better luck next time.
I have high hopes that the Photon comes back better than ever once "Googlerola" transforms. And I will gladly be there to buy it again.

Yet another one.
Bye. Don't let the door hit you........
You really don't have to make a post talking about how unintelligent you are, and ignorant by letting us know that you are too cool to root your phone so that you can alleviate some of the bugs that you probably don't have to root for in the first place. People act like rooting is such a huge step to do, when all it does is give you admin rights over your phone. I never have to battery pull, so not sure what your problem is, but either you need to exchange it, or you need to learn how to read, because most people spend a bit of time reading on here and their problems are gone.
Bu bye

Eris Replacements?

Hey Guys,
Just curious to see if anyone else is in the same situation. My first Eris was ok for a few months, but began to slow down and the touchscreen wasn't working well, so VZW shipped me a replacement. Immediately after swapping, the replacement's touchscreen was unresponsive, so I had another one shipped out, and I got it Monday. That phone is the one I have now, and it keeps overheating and dying within three hours. Replacement #4 comes on Friday.
At this point, I'm sick of these things. A phone should just work. I know the Eris was the lower-end model, but at the time it was all I could get. Today when speaking to the girl she did mention that I could purchase another 'like-new' phone, though I'd have to pay for it. The original Motorola Droid was the most expensive at $289.00. Has anyone had enough issues with this phone to get them to send you a new phone for free? I don't want to overpay for a replacement model that's already been used. My warranty expires soon as well, so I need to resolve the issue fast. I've seen success stories of some people getting new Incredibles sent to them, can any of you share how? I'd like to think that Eris #4 will work, but I'm skeptical at this point. Apparently Verizon's 'rigorous re-certification process' isn't so rigorous after all. It would be cheaper to switch networks and get a new Android phone, but it's not an option because I'm on a plan with my family.
Thanks!
Just call them and when they offer to send you another eris, tell them you simply dpnt want another eris because all the others didn't work. Keep at them, get a little angry, threaten to leave the network, and if all else fails, ask to speak to a supervisor.

I think I got the only good one
Going on 10 months with the same Eris. And I have beat the hell out of it. Broke the digitizer and performed open-eris surgery.
My wife's Eris had a bad trackball after 6 months. VZW replaced and has been good ever since.
Sent from my CELB_3.7 ERIS using XDA App
Only issue is the trackball for me, and if i push down to the bottom right of it the TB works fine. Other than that, she has been a champ.
11 months for me, though mine has started to act very strange and has stopped doing some things.

Well, I called Verizon today because the GPS module must have been bad. It was their signal that something was wrong when I couldn't boot the phone into safe mode, so I should be getting my Incredible tomorrow! It's been good guys... sort of lol
I have had the phone since November last year and beat the living hell out of it and it still works, I have a 4 and 2yo at home and they love to play with daddy's phone

Same boat here. Got it day one and its still awesome. Didnt root til july cause i be scared, lol. My kids love playing games and looking at photos. Im glad i didnt jump ship and get a fascinate. As long as we have ppl like Punk Kaos and others putting out awesome roms ill stay with the eris!!!!! KGB!!!!!
i'm surprised they're still replacing erises with erises. You'd think they'd run out and have to give dincs out instead.
As long as there's Windex, there'll be "new" old Eris's!

So am I. It took a lot of pushing for me to get them to give me an Incredible. Like I said, the fact my Eris didn't go into safe mode helped, but also the first rep I got just simply didn't want to deal with me, so instead of forwarding me to their supervisor they bounced me to another rep. I actually wasn't angry with them at all - I was being downright polite.

Same, that is the key! Be polite to the rep, but be pissed at the phone. Also, if you dont need to send your eris back, (I didn't as they just offered me an early upgrade), be sure to send it in for the 132 credit!

Problem solved question answered! Thanks. ****MODS PLEASE CLOSE****

I have been having some issues with my fascinate ever since I had to swap out ESN'S to get my signal back. It seems like I've been missing alot of calls. I have been dealing with the issues without much complaint.
Today my wife called me 3X and my phone didnt even ring 1X. I decided it was time to call verizon.
The rep I spoke to gave me 2 choices for a replacement. The choices are a DROID X2 and DROID INCREDIBLE 2 or another fascinate.
My question is which phone should I take Droid X2, Droid Incredible 2 or another fascinate. Thanks all!

I think either would be good choices to be honest. I am curious though, how did you convince the rep to give you one of the newer phones? I would like to take advantage of this.

I didnt, I simply told her what was going on with my phone and those were my choices for replacement. I told her I wanted another samsung phone in hopes that she would spit back the charge but she spit back a refurbished fascinate. She said the choices were not hers. The computer gives her choices based on the type of phone you currently have.

I was given the option of Droid X2, Incredible 2, or Charge.
Although I would like charge due to 4G, it doesnt seem like there are a lot of devs there. (At least compared to Fascinate)
I would only think of taking the Charge, the Fascinate beats out the Dinc2 and X2 IMO... went into a vz store today and the guy there told me that they know about the Fascinate issues and there is a big "update" coming at the end of the month, whether this is gingerbread or a froyo patch he didn't know... as for a new phone he said they are absolutely not supposed to offer anything but another Fascinate or MAYBE a Dinc2

Would you recommend a Charge instead of a Fascinate?
Also to people having trouble with getting verizon store employee to change your phone, here is something from their forum.
On 7-8-11, Verizon Wireless implemented a POLICY on the Fascinate. Whenever a new policy comes along, all 80,000+ employees are not going to be aware of it immediately. Not that it's excusable, but it happens from time to time.
If you go to a Verizon Wireless CORPORATE store, and they are unfamiliar with the process, I will post info to guide them on the new policy. I cannot post the policy because I could get canned, but I can post how to get to the policy.
Where is this policy? There are 2 ways to get there:
1) Open up InfoManager. In the search box, type in: "Samsung Fascinate Not Receiving Calls." This will bring up several search results. It's the first result that shows up.
2) There is an OST article number for this information. The OST that can also be typed in the Infomanager search box is 70946. This will bring up several search results as well. It's the first option.
Things to note: This missed call issue is intermittent.
**There is no fix for it. It can't be master reset, updated with new software (at this time), battery pulled, *228 update, or network troubleshot. It does NOT need to be duplicated in-store for a replacement as it is intermittent. Sometimes it happens. Sometimes it doesn't. When it's a known intermittent issue, we should NOT need to duplicate it in the store. **

as for the charge as a replacement...if you live in a 4g area or are soon to get 4g, then yes
if not, then from a development stand point, no i wouldnt
I just got my device replaced with a Dinc 2. I feel that 4" is the perfect screen size. I am just really hoping I don't get one that has Gingerbread on it, because the S-Off exploit has been patched with the update.
The nice thing is that this doesn't renew your contract. So when it is up, you are still able to upgrade. I am actually able to upgrade right now (main line on a family share plan) but am holding off until some more phones (and hopefully the new Nexus, but I'm not holding my breath) come out

They still sell them, so I wouldn't think you will have a problem getting another Fascinate. It's good to hear that you will be keeping it for awhile longer (or at least until/if the Galaxy S II comes to VZW), as you and only a handful of other people are huge assets to the Fascinate community
Same dilemma for me. My account has notes allowing me to get Charge, DX2 or DI2 without any arguing (thanks to Mike from vzw forums) but yesterday I played a little bit with Charge and I didn't like it. It's too bulky and physical buttons instead of touch keys is no go for me. 4G speeds are tempting though. I think I will wait some more for fix.
Does anyone have the number I could call to get this replacement? My fascinate has been rebooting constantly, locking up, and not ringing during calls.

Hey Justin, just to give you a little update. I just left the VZW. No more fascinates for exchange, so I was told either a dinc2 or a X2 after a little bit of belly aching I am getting a refurbished Charge. I didnt even have to change my data plan im still at $30 unlimited. Should be here next week. Thanks for your advice....

seems to be its hit or miss on whether they have fascinates or not for replacement
my concern is i know im going to get the sgs2 (or equavilent) when it launches (hopefully within 2 months) so i dont feel the need or desire to get something radically different....as i cant own a device and not work on it
and the charge doesnt appeal to me for a few reasons as i dont have 4g and i really doubt i lack the ability to port all of the com rom stuff to it on my own w/o way too much effort (just to ultimately fail)...and dont want to use anyone elses roms (unless aosp was more imminent)
the dx2 isnt happening either (locked phone, no development)
the dinc2 would be appealing only for the use of aosp in the meantime and id be able to resell it and cover the cost of my next on contract phone easily
honestly the only phone id really take as a replacement besides another i500 would be the thunderbolt...despite my misgivings about the phone and its issues i could at least use bamf roms or aosp and still (probably) cover next phone with resale
/end rambling

So did you bring your Fascinate back to stock before you went in the store? i usually try to not go in to the store b/c most of them people are morons.
If it helps,
My wife has the Dinc2 and LOVES it. She is not in to modding at all, so the fact that limited dev support is not a big deal. She went from a D2G to the Dinc2 so she's never really had a dev supported phone.
A friend of mine has a Dx2 and says the dual core processor doesnt quite make up for having stock running.. While quadrant doesnt mean jack for the most part, he gets around 1600 and my fascinate breaks 2k on CM7.
The charge is a phone i wouldn't mind having.. i would consider trading my fascinate for a charge, but the phone im really waiting for (and hoping actually comes to the US) is Galaxy S II.

Yeah, at first they told me I could get anothet fassy, then when I went to store they said it was no longer available for warranty replacement. Not sure what happened in the 4 hours between. I chose the charge for a few reasons but in the end It really doesnt matter my contact is up in 5months so at the very least I got a new toy to play with til then. Im sure ill be able to sell it and recoup more than my fascinate would fetch when the time comes especially to someone who doesnt want to lose their unlimited data plan... Thanks again

[Q] How do I unroot my Photon?

I need instructions on how to use adb to unroot my Photon. I rooted it without the dock per this forum's instructions. And yes, I'm still a noob so I don't know what sbf is. But I can follow instructions very well, at least to a certain point.
I need help because I am returning my Photon tomorrow because I can't stand using the camera and the screen. It bothers me too much. Worse yet, I use my phone as a mp3 player and it seems to be very slow at that. With the screen off and using headset controls, it doesn't respond as fast if at all like my Optimus V or Motorola Triumph does. I'm pretty disappointed with the Tegra 2, seems almost as if it was overrated to begin with. I probably had set my expectations too high from the beginning.
I'm not much of a gamer, so graphics that the Tegra 2 is suppose to be able to put out doesn't bother me too much. I just prefer the snapdragons because they seem to work better for my needs.
And the screen. It looks great when I'm watching an mkv movie, but that's it. It doesn't do other things well enough for me. My pictures all look too grainy and pixelated. At times, when looking at skin tones, all i see are the square blotches and no smooth pictures, even hd pictures don't look right.
The camera is too slow to respond and to be honest, my Motorola Triumph takes better pictures and seems to work faster at it than the Photon.

i doubt they will know its rooted and they probably wont care if it is....just dont say anything, but if you want to appear un rooted just delet all root user apps i.e. file explorer, wifi tether, root checker and anything that would suggest that its rooted, but it isnt really that big of a deal.
its shady....you should have root access to all your devices. Computers allow root access why not phones?
I just got rid of my 3d. Dont waste your time if you think this phone has problems the 3d is a nightmare... trust me i had mine for 3 weeks. A couple problems i had was camera sticks to 3d in 2d mode after a couple hours of use screen turns black and you have to pull battery at least twice a day battery goes from hero to zero in 2 hours with moderate use i thought the camera app was kinda weak the whole phone lags when you open app draw, browsing the market, while your on the web browser, the list just goes on and on... trust me you'll thank me later

So anyways.. All I have to do is remove all the root apps and that's it? No going back in and removing the torpedo stuff?
I don't think it matters if it is rooted or not, but you can use this thread to go back to a stock un-rooted Moto rom.

I hate to say it, but yes, we (Sprint retail corporate stores) do check Android devices for rooting prior to exchange/return and on exchanges/returns, you may also be liable for a restocking fee of $35. Our S&R technicians taught each of us how to verify rooting.

I think 1/2 the members of this forum has returned/exchanged a rooted phone...I know for sure I have. Back when I got into the whole rooting thing, I used to be paranoid whenever I took my phone in; now THATS the least of my concerns.
People need to stop slinging all that nonsense of voided warranties & restocking fees. If Sprint's good with it....so am I.
I've also returned a rooted phone and Sprint had no issues with it at all.

There is a restocking fee to return a phone period, it doesn't matter if it's rooted or not. Exchanging for the same phone because it's allegedly defective is free, changing models comes with a restocking charge. And going from the photon to the evo is a huge step backwards.... Everyone except 1 person I know with the 3d switched or is planning on switching to the photon.

I am sure there are some employees that know how to check to see if a phone is rooted or not, but it is by no means the standard. As countless people have said in various threads, I have returned and had work performed on rooted phones.
I have come across so many sales associates that don't even know phone details/specs. I doubt they know how to check to see if a phone is rooted or not.
so is there a way to unroot or not? I need to return my phone for repairs. I already updated to the final build, so should I just do that again to unroot it even though it hasn't been released yet?
unroot for return or exchange
SIMPLE SINCE U HAVE to manually install superuser from market to gain root anyways, unlike normal method where it installs right from a rooting program, just go to application manage delete superuser, delete all trace of apps that use root or better yet do a factory reset.. superuser should uninstall, really seeing superuser on screen is the most common sign of rooted phone.
You could try the terminal emulator root method but instead of typing the last prompt as install.so-sh type uninstall
Just an idea! Also I know flashing sbf file with rsdlite looses root with no signs of ever being flashed
Good Luck
Not exactly true...

I'm returning the Photon within my first 30 days of being a new sprint customer, and exchanging for a Samsung Galaxy II (EPIC 2 4G) with no restocking fee . The photon truly is a piece of $h1t that was not ready for release, not to mention the Idiots who designed it, approved the design, tested it after build to realize that when it is in kickstand mode, you can't charge the P.O.S. lol and out of the box, it won't play most videos that you put on it, even MP4's . Plus the amount of battery pulls is ridiculous. Trying to assign certain ringtone MP3's causes it to ring but lock up, and these are the same small 128k MP3s that all my old phones used, including my G1, MyTouch 3G, and Samsung Galaxy (ALL TMO phones). All of them can play all my videos, but the photon stutters and loses sync, etc. this is a "Not Ready for Prime Time" release just to get something out there. Shame too because I really liked the feel.. And the speakerphone is the loudest I've heard in ages... At least on a smartphone...
Right there with you bud.. I was sold on the photon by overhearing one on speakerphone, but didn't get a close look at it. I bought it online. What a dismal piece of hardware. Out of the box, it could not and would not play any of the MP4's, mkv's or FLV's that my TMO myTouch and Vibrant played. When playing a video with the kickstand open, you can't charge it. As a nightstand clock? HA The A-Hole who designed that should be fired. Sure, we all want a smartphone that can't be charged overnight while using as an alarm clock (with the kickstand) or while watching videos... Haa.. Add to that the frequent lockups when trying to play any of my MP3s (which all ringtones on my other phones) , which requires pulling the battery to get it to shut up... The lousy slow and sluggish interface and the gallery is a nightmare compared to Samsung's UI... No thanks MoPho... Back you go. Your only feature that is any good is the speakerphone, and I just don't use it often enough to put up with such a terribly pixelated screen. This is NOTHING like the SAMOLED.... qHD? I think not. Save the marketing terms... Build a good phone we can buy and enjoy.
The kickstand works both ways. Flip the phone over 180 degrees. It will stand that way too. Then you can charge at the same time.
It actually stands upright too, just not as stable.
So back to topic please...
I'm trying to sale my Photon to get the SGS 2 and I need to un root it.
Can someone please provide a step by step on how to un root this phone thanks in advance

Farewell :(

I just went out and got the Bionic today, but more importantly I just wanted to thank all of the wonderful and dedicated Eris devs out there. YOU are the reason my eris has lasted this long. I really appreciate everything you have all done, and as soon as I get some money back in my checking since the bionic costs a bit i will send some your way. Thank you everyone, xda has the best community
well that was short lived... i cant stand the bionic and im returning it tomorrow lol. Ill enjoy the eris for another month until the vigor comes out!

what happened??? i've had my bionic for 2 days now and am loving it. i was also loving it that the sales rep actually felt bad for me for having an eris for 2 years, and was floored when i told him that thanks to the devs here, it ran gingerbread very well.
anyway, yes, thanks to the devs and for making the eris a wonderful first android experience!
I just received my Incredible 2 today and I absolutely love it.
Dont say goodbye yet.. Ive had my Incredible 2 for a few monthes now and I still come here, because I still have been flashing new ROMs on my old eris.. been looking for one that runs the best for a phone with no service.

I love my incredible 2, but I just cant stay away from this eris either.. I think Im hooked..

What were your issues with the bionic? Just curious as it had been a possible option for me.
Later Eris
I had fun with the Eris but I am moving to the Incredible 2. Thank you to everybody and good luck if you still have an Eris.
Sorry for the delay guys, the biggest issue I had with the bionic was the headphone jack issue. For anyone who hasn't heard of this, its that the headphone jack caused a squealing noise whenever it was powered on. Ill see if I can find the thread on the Motorola support board in a bit. Since I use my phone for primarily music either local or spotify, this noise issue was a huge deal. I took it back to the store and they gave me a new one. Turns out that one and the display models all made the sounds. So I just returned the device altogether. for everyone else that its working for, I'm glad you're enjoying it. And to all the devs here thank you so much for keeping my Eris running with the best of them

Oh, yeah. I have heard of that issue now that I think about it. That would definitely bug the heck out of me as well. Haha not patient enough to wait for a fix?
Normally I would wait for the fix, but I was too pissed off having just spent 300$ on a new phone that didn't work up to my standards (which aren't too high given I'm still using the eris ) since I have at least a half hour commute if not longer and I usually fill that gap with music, that particular issue was a huge deal for me. So here I am awaiting the vigor or the prime. I'm a fan of HTC tho so it'll probably be the former
Sent from my ERIS-ADR6200 using XDA App
That's quite understandable. I actually would probably do the same thing. That's why I still haven't upgraded and I've been sitting on an upgrade since the beginning of June (Man, it has been a tough 4 months). If I'm going to drop that much on a phone, I want to absolutely love it. Another reason is because I have not had good luck with getting new phones in the past.
Story time: Started out with the chocolate v2 and then the enV touch on my first upgrade and dreaded them both. Even used old phones from friends in between such as the V, enV, and some motorola flip phone. Never getting a dumbphone again. Ever. Finally bought the Eris off someone on craigslist like a year ago and I had never been happier with a phone (even more so once I rooted it ). Even though the Eris isn't the quickest and most glamorous phone out there, it beats all my past ones by a landslide.
I'm also waiting on the vigor and prime to come out, but for me it will probably be the latter
If the vigor comes out on the 20th (or the 13th perhaps?) I dont know how long ill be able to restrain myself from waiting for the prime. I know I only had the bionic for 2 days, but just those 2 days of 4g made me really antsy (4g coverage here is phenomenal). Im hoping we can get a more definitive prediction on the prime before the vigor is released tho.
PS: Ive had an upgrade since March. I know your pain
I'm in the same boat - upgrade available since August, waiting and seeing. I'm going to see what the big, bad Apple is offering starting Tuesday - if they fix their terrible Gmail support, I may go that way. I definitely will not go Prime if it's true that it has a 4.5" display. 4.3" is bad enough - I want something that fits in my pocket.
I may go Bionic - I really want a phone that has a good radio, since I live in a spot with bad coverage, and HTC doesn't seem to make phones with good radios. I think I can live with a mediocre display - I've had the Eris for 21 months, after all.

I also worry about the size of my next phone. One thing to keep in mind is that for ICS, the screen can take up more of the phone's face since the softkey buttons aren't needed. Since I've also had an upgrade for a long time now, I will definitely be getting either the vigor, prime, or droid hd/razr.

I used to worry about that, but it seems like the standard for any high end phone has become at least a 4in screen. I guess I've just accepted it lol

Hmmm, in the same boat - eligible for upgrade again, finally - LOL. Seriously debating to - by locking into another 24 months extension, again - get the "free" INC.2 online via CircuitCity/TigerDirect/CompUSA instead of dealing with Big Red directly as their best direct price is $119 (suppose to be using my last NE2 discount - regular new 2 year price is $149 today ....) and no activation fees - and keep unlimited email & web for smartphone bundle.
If I go with any 4G devices, I will lose UNL data & be capped at 2GB at $30/mo - whereas I get a generous 22% corp. discount for primary FS line & data, so I'm saving quite a bit each month, - DW is on a feature phone (Env3) exempt from data.
Inc.2's bigger 4" screen is just about right and will fit into my pockets, etc. without being bulky - if I go this route although I will miss not having the Eris, getting it rooted & flashing Roms have unleashed its full potential - had people looking over & wondering what I got under "its" skin, etc.
What I've read & understood so far, there're very few returns on the Inc.2 - and virtually no FRU's from Big Red - it's a very good sign so far, 6 months after its launch, so I'm going to chew on it for a while longer during the trip. I just couldn't imagine taking a brand new unrooted, stock smartphone with bloatware on a 10 day trip next week, so I got reasons to hold on to the Eris for a while longer.
Sorry maybe I misunderstood, but why would you have to extend your contract and lose unlimited data?

If I renew/extend with 3G devices like the Incredible 2, yes, I get to keep unlimited email & email for smartphone, grandfathered @ $29.99 /mo. plus 22% corporate discount, which is very nice (or stay with the Eris, etc.)
However, I will lose it if I opt for any 4G LTE devices like the T.bolt as I will need to switch to the 2GB+ data bundle & email plan @ $30 /mo. without corporate discount - including the iPhones.
We got solid 4+ bars 3G GSM coverage at the house (from big "A" & T-Mo) and 2G/borderline 3G from big Red, so ....
Oh that's odd. Is it because of the corporate discount? I kept unlimited data when I used my upgrade to get a bionic. (I've obviously since returned it, but was explicitly told I would keep my unlimited)

Get G2 now or wait for a newer phone?

What do you guys think? Should I get the G2 now or wait until a new phone comes out such as the S5? I know if I keep waiting newer and better devices will keep appearing, but I want to get the best of the best for a 2 year contract and don't want to be disappointed with a phone that has any big flaws.
As far as I know, the G2 has a few flaws I might be bothered with such as games not playing with good fps, the phone getting hot while playing games, video recording quality issues, lag issues in the web browser, and also unsure if LG will be supporting this phone with timely updates. All of these issues I've heard on this forum.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Well if the S5 is coming in Feb/March/Aprilish like people are saying, thats already 4-6 months into your contract, if it even really comes out. Maybe they will wait until June like previous models, then you are at like 8 months into your contract. Will it have issues? Probably- basically all phones have issues. Are the G2 issues big enough for you to not be happy? Maybe try the phone for 14 days? I have noticed some lag in browsing with chrome. I need to test other browsers to see if there is a better one. I hope LG updates their phone as it's been very well received for the most part.
Phones are outdated so fast these days. I would recommend picking up a G2 for the trial period and see how you like it. There is no harm in that and it may surprise you. If it doesn't, return the phone and keep your upgrade. :good:
Really depends on how bad your current phone is. Current top phones that are in market are LG G2, Note 3, Nexus 5 (not in any particular order). Newer phones that are rumored are S5 and HTC M8, and probably a release date around March or April. If you can wait that long then wait. I jumped from Galaxy Nexus (Vzw), in September to LG G2, simply because it was great looking phone with specs and got for $140 on 2 year contract and I am glad I made that decision, this phone is awesome. Two things I wanted in new phone battery life and speed and this phone does just that.
Yea. I agree with posts above. The newest and best phones are constantly being released so it won't be long for an even better phone to come out. Even if you wait until the s5 comes out an even better phone will be released shortly after. I personally think that the lg g2 is a great phone and I could not be happier with it. This is my first android phone and there is definitely a lot to like about android and the lg g2

Some of the issues may be big enough for me, unless there are solutions to them such as software updates from LG. Mainly lag and gaming fps/heat issues. But I understand no phone is perfect. I can't get the nexus 5 because I'm on Verizon and I don't know if I want to switch because of the service and plan I have with them.
If I do a 14 day trial do I get a full refund of my money if I don't like it or do I have to pat anything? I remember one time one of my family members got a phone with Verizon and soon after returned and we had to pay for the use of service or something.
Also I currently have an HTC Rezound.

I think at this point in the year all of the carriers/manufacturers have their respective big guns out for the holiday shoppers. I really don't expect any other" must haves" to come until sometime first quarter of 2014, so wysiwyg for now.
For me, the time was now, in fact it's been exactly 2yrs; got the og razr the first day, 11/11/11, and moved up to the g2 yesterday (after a lot of research). What did it for me was the Verizon promo that ended yesterday. Got the phone for free and kept my unlimited data? win:win.

Go now and start enjoying. Better phones will always come out. That said I find it hard to believe (phablets aside) any phone in the near future will offer the performance to battery life of the G2. Sure a faster CPU may come out next year, or a phone may have a nicer build/body (HTC), but all around I doubt the Galaxy S5 or new HTC will offer anything of real significance over the G2.

The whole heat issue I think many people misunderstand especially if coming from a lower power phone.
These SoC chips have better GPU than average laptop integrated graphics, high clockspeeds and no room for a heatsink.
It is pushing 2 million pixels to the screen, per rendered frame. Of course its gonna heat up.....as long as it is within SoC thermal limits it is of no concern
I have the G2 and notice none of this game lag or heat issue at all i dunno where you heard this?
I can assure you no phone has better integrated gpu than a laptop.

I don't know how it works on Verizon, but with Sprint any phone you purchase has a period of 14 days where you can return it for a full refund. Sometimes companies may charge an activation fee of like 20-35 bucks. All carriers have a sort of "trial period" where you can return the phone, but they may each bit a little different. You could try calling your nearest Verizon store and ask them, or maybe try chatting with support online, or just calling Verizon's customer service number online.
The gaming lag may be isolated to a specific model, or maybe a user made certain tweaks, etc. Also could be app related and require the app developer to make a tweak for a phone, etc. There are so many factors its hard to say, but personal hands on experience is always best.
Totes go for the G2

Take the plunge!! It's a future proofed phone man. I buy and sell phones where I am on craigslist and so have used about 80 different kinds this year. My favourites up till the G2 were the HTC One, Moto X and Optimus G. However upon using the G2 i experienced a fluidity and power I've yet to see matched. I mean sure every phone has is caveats but if theres one thing I know its that galaxy devices are known for there fair share of Lag. You can fix the G2's problems with some tweaks/roms/ settings changes. I've yet to have an overheating device when i play dead trigger 2 and nova 3 but not all devices are the same right, theres a ton of disimilarities even within the same model. If you got the cash go for it or the Nexus 5
I say now. What else do you need in a smartphone? The screen is fantastic, the battery is better than any standard device, the processor will handle anything for a very long time, and the camera is in the top tier.
What else do we need?
Since you are on Verizon, did you see the deal few days ago on G2? It was Free with 2 year contract.
The G2 is bleeding edge right now. There will always be another device "down the road" so you might as well have the best while you can.

I have had not a single problem with my G2 when gaming in fact it is the best phone I've used for gaming by far. As for heat issues there is none. For some people they say it's get so hot that it burns them but for 99% of people it is barely hot to the touch. I guess it depends on your heat tolerance.

Exactly. I don't need a high end phone but I decided to go with the LG G2 because I think it's a very capable well-rounded device. Since I am also locked into a 2 year contract, I'd expect my phone to last at least for the next 2 years and I think it won't be a problem with the LG G2. Some of the mid-range phones I got previously felt dated 6 months later.
There will always be another phone on the horizon. But the G2 and other newer phones will likely have the same 800 processor as the upcoming ones and none of the "big three" out right now would ever be classified as bad phones. Get one now if you need it, or get one later if you want to wait.
I was in the same boat. I was thinking about waiting for the S5 as well, I had been due for an upgrade since June of 2012. I really had an itch to get a new phone so I took the plunge and got the G2. Some places say the S5 will come out in January, what if it comes out in the summer? It's a roll of the dice. One thing that made the decision easier was that this device has the latest hardware. ..
I'm happy with it so far, love the knock on feature, battery and customization.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm still indecisive and the other issue I'm struggling with is that I don't really need another smartphone cuz the rezound I have has been working good for me. It's just I'd rather have a faster and smoother phone with better battery life and the latest specs. My rezound lags and the battery is terrible, but it's a great phone.
I was aware of the Verizon deal, but didn't go for the deal. One problem for me money-wise is that even if the phone were to be free, I'd have to pay tax on the full price of the phone because I live in California.

For anyone wondering if they should get a phone, or wait, just buy the phone you want, not because it's the fastest or newest. There will always be new phones announced, and there will always be rumors. If you keep waiting, you'll never upgrade until you have to. That's what happened to me. I was a long time Motorola user, since the first Droid, but I waited and waited, and waited for the first Moto/Google phone, and was severely disappointed. The only good thing that happened because of all the waiting was I got a G2. Glad I pulled the trigger, and I won't be looking back.

I believe Verizon charges a restocking fee of like $35, but that might be just the 3rd party stores, because I went through Verizon when I exchanged and they didn't charge me an activation fee or a restocking fee. This was through online and over the phone btw.
