Hi, I know there has been some discussion about this already but I dont think this has been properly resolved.
I am fully aware of the tegra 2 video decoding limitations so lets not get into a discussion about that.
Basically, on the website Samsung suggest this can play 1080p video and there are various videos floating about suggesting it can plan youtube videos in 1080p format.
Now, here's the rub....
If you play a video in none desktop mode it plays great but this isnt in 1080p format, this is pretty obvious if you pump it out the HDMI. If you attempt to play it straight out of the browser, stock or Dolphin it stutters in 1080p and is just about watch-able in 720p.
So, I am wondering exactly what 1080p video sammy are actually referencing to?
On a side note however I have found that DICE and MXplayer do a really good job or playing main and high profile MKV's to the point where 720p high profiles are watchable at stock cpu 1 gig and smooth at 1.6 gig overclock (neither is hardware decoding, all done by CPU).

Samsung simply repeats what Nvidia states which is the tegra 2 can only play 1080p video encoded in Baseline profile. The problem is nobody uses Baseline profile as its obsolete and has poor compression.
Youtube certainly does not use Baseline profile when it re-codes videos uploaded to its servers and that is problem....
Yes the video decoder in the tegra 2 sucks balls.
I dont think that is right, flash 3.2 is supposed to have tegra 2 hardware acceleration and should be able to play 1080p youtube stuff through a browser.

Just because it has hardware acceleration of a codec does not mean it can play all 1080p video as explained with h.264. If the video is encoded with too high of a bitrate the tegra 2 hardware accelerator chokes, and it does not take much to choke it....
Unfortunately advertisement is inherently deceptive as the case with the link you provided.
Does anyone have any more info regarding this? I really thought that with the 3.2 Honeycomb update they would optimize the Tegra 2 GPU more, but it still cant play any stream or youtube video at 1080p.

1. S5PC11x Chipset can play 720p(h.264 high profile)
2. Tegra 2 based phone can not play H.264 high profile clip.
3. Froyo Galaxy S/Tab can not play movie. Gingerbread is required.
4. 2nd gen. Snapdragon can not play H.264 High profile level 4.0/5.0 clip.

The above video 1280 high profile play just fine with stock player. Android 3.1 handle highprofile mp4 with the right spec.
The 1920 highprofile freeze my tab and only gets audio. And when do people want to play 1080p? Better to use 720p with good quality and bitrate.
The thing that's stand out with diceplayer is that you can play .mkv.
It Evan plays videos with dts.
If you want use to test and see different between diceplayer and stock you should upload videos that don't run on stock player
Have tried some highprofile mkv and its almost ok, for the most time it runs smoothly, but sometimes the picture hangs,studder.
It's almost there but it don't reach all the way, hopes that we will see updates so the playback gets better.
Also think that mp4 baseline and other video plays smoother in movie's when there is alot of movement and panning.

Same here, it opens, sits for a second, then closes.
Works pretty well with these ([email protected] AC3) TV shows that I download. Not bad since Mobo couldn't play these smoothly. Video has some hiccups but audio is smooth.
Downloaded a sample video ([email protected] DTS) and there was no video. Then the file stopped playing half way through (27 seconds in).
But I don't watch movies on my tablet anyway, only TV shows. And this seems to work great. Let's see if it'll be able to stream the TV shows smoothly. Thanks OP!

Ahh finally, since neither stock nor mobo could play my .mkv's (tv series) this is godsend.
I'm running HC 3.1 & TW.
Got Diceplayer playing back a 720p .MKV file (not sure if it was high profile or not) - not buttery smooth but better than anything else I've seen so far on HC3.1
Got a couple of questions, I was wondering if anyone can answer...
1) Diceplayer claims to offer hardware accelerated video decoding - is this for .MKVs?
2) Is that hardware acceleratation for Tegra 2
3) IF so, how are they managing it where so many others have failed? (Wasn't the core problem with offering HW acceleration for .MKVs down to lack of support from the nVidia side of things?)

It plays 720p high profile mkv without any issues. With 1080p, The video stops playing, but the audio still works for some, but wont for most of the 1080p videos either mkv or mp4. I think this might be achieved in the future.
720p playback is great !
1080p just freeze the tab but hey not even my Galaxy S II cant handle Full HD besides the resolution is useless for now anyway

I don't think it (Galaxy Tab/Tegra2) can handle level 4.1 or higher. But plays the rest better than anything else I've tried.

Awesome.. which leads me to question 3.. *How* are they managing to implement HW acceleration where the other software vendors have failed? e.g. the reliance on core NVidia software library support (or lack of it apparently) ??

I was reading on other websites and here when I tried to post this thread about a player called Diceplayer that can play high-profile mkv on Tegra2.

I installed the trial but the app crashes for me before I can even select a file. Anyone else able to get the app to run? The thread above indicates it works on the Galaxy tab...
Hopefully someone else can get this app to work, the feedback seemed pretty impressive on the Galaxy forum.
EDIT: After reading the release notes it says that h.264 high profile still doesn't work on Atrix. Since other Tegra2 phones can do it, shouldn't the Atrix be able to as well? I wonder if it's just the software that they haven't optimized for the Atrix or if the Tegra2 in the Atrix is somehow different.
Sorry I fail at this, the info I was reading that said it didn't support atrix was from a previous version. Well I still can't get the trial to work on my phone and I don't want to pay $4 for something that doesn't work.
Statements like this give me hope:

Diceplayer solve container problems. not Video decoding problems.
If your device can play H.264 high profile MP4, Diceplayer can play
H.264 High profile MKV.
but if not, diceplayer can't play it.
because diceplayer use same hw video decoder driver that is used by stock player.
You should retry playing your videos (in any player) after the 2.3.4 update, it seems to have fixed a lot of the h264 decoding issues for me

720p will play its the 1080p that wont play correctly for me! major lag!
I have gotten HD playback on my G tablet Honeycomb using Flashback 7.1 overclocked to 1.4 ghz
I got it working by downloading MX video player and its codecs to play videos
I downloaded a bunch of 720p movie trailers, the ones I tried for the youtube video (I'll upload tomorrow, phone is dead) were Avatar (2009) and The Darkest Hour (2011).
Now I know stock g tablet 2.2 can play 1080p hd videos, but the fact is, even if you can play the 1080p movie on the g tablet, that doesn't mean it will have 1080x1920 pixels on the g tablet, it will downscale the 1080p video into the maximum resolution on the g tablet that is 1024x600. That means that it also scales 720p videos. So in reality, its not even worth trying to play 1080p videos on the g tablet.
But as far as playing the video, its acceptable, there is a little choppiness that you can see here and there.
My testing from last Sunday, as well as Edirector's tests in teh Illuminate thread did show that it was possible to play HD video downloaded from Youtube usign software decoding. I tested with Flashback and could play everything he was playing, including the Bluray ruality rips he kept talking about.
What I was able to show was that hardware decoding was still not possible on HC roms, meaning that hardware acceleration was not working, and can not work unless drivers are obtained.
I went back to Calk/Clem Froyo rom and am able to play videos using hardware decoding. the quality is a "bit' better, but nothing to write home about. The difference come when viewing on the TV via the dock. Hardware decoding does improve the picture.
Any rom, with the right video applications can view videos using software decoding. Oveclocking isn't even necessarily needed to do so.
This was why at the conclusion of my testing, I questioned the need for hardware acceleration at all. If the HC and GB roms can watch HD video using software decoding, and the difference with the hardware decoding on Froyo roms is minimal, then why is hardware acceleration the deciding factor when going to an HC rom? For me, personally, it's because I use the dock. Hell, my famly just watched 3 movies today on the TV through the dock...
I just need to find a video player that supports AC3 audio in hardwae decoding mode.
Battery Life
Two main reasons to choose Froyo over GB or HC for the hardware acceleration are that with the HDMI cable and dock if the video isn't hardware accelerated, it looks crappy on the TV. Also, and more importantly, is BATTERY LIFE! Hardware accelerated decoding uses MUCH less battery. So if you were on an intercontinental flight like I was last month, you can hardware decode 4 movies and still have about 35% battery, where as you might be able to squeeze out 2.5 movies using software decoding. To each there own...but I bought the Gtab to watch videos mostly, so I want to use the hardware optimized for it.

Heck yes! That's the one thing that burns me up...how the Tegra 2 doesn't decode AC3. We need a video player that will hardware decode the video stream, but software decode the audio. Shouldn't be to hard to do right?
i have the TF101, which unfortunately only plays 720p and 1080p files very choppy (someone told me you you re-encode them for the tf101 but meh).
do you guys think the prime will bw able t play such MKVs with no issue? im talking about normal 72ßp/108ßp mkvs which you can dl all ovwer the net, not specially encoded ones.

Anandtech says it's amazing at playing high quality video. this was an issue for me.

Plus in the what would you like to know about the prime thread a member already tested this as he has a prime already. It was mkv and 1080p. Played flawlessly. He made a video on it. He has at least 3 you tube vids reviewing the prime hands on.

tegra3 has the ability to play high profile 1080p videos, the prime should do just fine with pretty much anything you can throw at it...
Tegra 3 may support 1080p and all, but question is, if default video player, that uses HW decoding, supports MKV format. My iPad 2 supports all kinds of HD, as long as it's in proper format. MKVs play very choppy if I use a player for any format other than iPad supported.

Default player doesn't even matter. Even if a format not supported, there are always 3rd party players which will. The member here that has a prime used a 3rd. Party player to play that 1080P MKV file. Which it played perfectly. No default player in any tablet plays all formats. That's the great thing about getting a good 3rd. Prty player that will.

default player plays the video fine, but for some reason theres no sound.
bsplay, mxplayer and rock player are all HD accelerated players.
When someone goes to play with a demo at gamestop, they should take with them a micro sd that has a high profile 1080p mkv and see how that plays on the prime. They should add other video players on the card and install them and see which one plays better with the high profile mkv. Yes I know that reviews have said this or that, but having someone that is not part of any review circle would be grateful to many.
I would do this but I'm not popping my head in that gamestop store after getting that dump.

I wonder how Prime will play avi files. I find that playing avi on TF101 is fine but the quality is very bad - I get a lot of artifacts - like it had a grid of dots over it. Probably because players use simplified decoding algoritms? Or maybe it's because Tegra2 lacks NEON? I also think it should be able to send 1080p signal to the screen even if the video is below 1080p (and different than 720p) - otherwise it will be scaled twice - once to 720p by the Prime and second time by the monitor itself - it will probably degrade quality. (well, but on the other hand I can just stick to 720p and 1080p videos which should be great)
Tegra3 does have NEON so no worries.

I had this same problem with a 1080p .MOV file off of my DSLR as well as a MKV file. I haven't tried mxplayer, but I will when I get home. I've been looking forward to being able to play MKV files without having to convert or manage with iTunes. Like Sinatra sang, "I'll do it my way!"
somehow I can't copy mkv to my asus prime... it keeps saying explorer error and it restarts the explorer
I have been playing around with my Prime for the last 5 days, especially in regards with video. Here are my findings:
- Not all files can be played back with HW decoding.
- mkv containers does not seem to be playable in the default player, only 3rd part, like mx video player.
- 720p mkv plays back almost flawlessly with some initial stutter in SW, 1080p does not.
- mp4 and avi seem to be HW accelerated by mx video player.
I am not entirely sure on what seem to be the problem. My initial reaction is that it is a problem with the container formats. However, I have not checked whether the videos, that I have tried to play, have some exotic encoding settings, which the software controling the HW decoder, does not recognize.
Perhaps mkw HW acceleration support broke in one of the updates I received, when I booted my prime for first time monday.
What are your experiences, especially with 1080p?

The first three high profile 720p MKV files I tried with BSPlayer worked flawlessly. Same videos will not play at all on my Xoom.

Will do when I get home. I will also try the same videos on my SGSII for comparison.
My hunch is that the hw decoder refuses to decode the video stream. Perhaps this is controlled entirely by the android system and not the video player app.

The best video format for the Sony Tablet S is MPEG-4 (mp4) encoded using a H.264 CODEC with a pixel size of 1280 x 720, a bit rate of 1500 kbps, and a frame rate of 29.97 fps. The video's audio should be stereo AAC with a sample rate of 44100 Hz and a bit rate of 96000 bps. I use and recommend Handbrake for converting videos and MX Player Pro for playing videos.

Actually you can just download Dice Player or BS Player Lite. This two video player can play any mkv files I load into it. even upto 1080p :laugh: :good:

Ok I tried some 720p MKV files and the sound isn't synchronized with the video. Also I still noticed some lag.

Try QQPlayer. I had a lot of problems with video playing slower than audio when using Dice and MX, but QQ seemed to clear them up. Other than that, try using a video converter (such as Handbrake) and use the Apple TV preset. Works for me.
I'm also disappointed by the Tegra 2 performance in video. Here are some thoughts and questions.
From my personal tries, all video players (MX, BSPlayer, Dice) have about the same performance (perhaps BSPlayer with ARMv7 plugin is a little better). Does every video player Tegra 2 video playback implementation are based on the same library?
Is there some way to make some low-level (asm) optimization that would help? I would gladly take a look if there was a way to do it.
I've noticed that even 720P High profile have some lag! Not very serious, but noticeable!! For example, Rise of the Silver Surfer 720P-HP trailer (see h264info.com/clips.html) lags at several points in the video. It may be clearly seen with BSPlayer, when displaying FPS information ('(i)' button during video playback).
1080P Baseline Profile seems to play smoothly (and H/W acceleration is enabled).
Video players disables H/W acceleration for High Profile 1080P so, of course it is terribly laggy. Is it a technical requirement? Isn't there a way to force H/W acceleration for Full HD High profile videos, even if that wouldn't mean full speed?
