Hi! I'm trying to find a way to play 720p videos smoothly on my Tablet S but I can't find a proper bitrate for it. I tried 4000 but it's still laggy. On some tutorials I found they were saying to use 1500 as bitrate but that is ridiculous. A 720p video with bitrate 1500 will result in a lot of dead pixels. So what can I do?
I'm using Format Factory to convert the MKV videos to MP4 H.264/AVC 720p

The best video format for the Sony Tablet S is MPEG-4 (mp4) encoded using a H.264 CODEC with a pixel size of 1280 x 720, a bit rate of 1500 kbps, and a frame rate of 29.97 fps. The video's audio should be stereo AAC with a sample rate of 44100 Hz and a bit rate of 96000 bps. I use and recommend Handbrake for converting videos and MX Player Pro for playing videos.

Actually you can just download Dice Player or BS Player Lite. This two video player can play any mkv files I load into it. even upto 1080p :laugh: :good:

Ok I tried some 720p MKV files and the sound isn't synchronized with the video. Also I still noticed some lag.

Try QQPlayer. I had a lot of problems with video playing slower than audio when using Dice and MX, but QQ seemed to clear them up. Other than that, try using a video converter (such as Handbrake) and use the Apple TV preset. Works for me.
I'm also disappointed by the Tegra 2 performance in video. Here are some thoughts and questions.
From my personal tries, all video players (MX, BSPlayer, Dice) have about the same performance (perhaps BSPlayer with ARMv7 plugin is a little better). Does every video player Tegra 2 video playback implementation are based on the same library?
Is there some way to make some low-level (asm) optimization that would help? I would gladly take a look if there was a way to do it.
I've noticed that even 720P High profile have some lag! Not very serious, but noticeable!! For example, Rise of the Silver Surfer 720P-HP trailer (see h264info.com/clips.html) lags at several points in the video. It may be clearly seen with BSPlayer, when displaying FPS information ('(i)' button during video playback).
1080P Baseline Profile seems to play smoothly (and H/W acceleration is enabled).
Video players disables H/W acceleration for High Profile 1080P so, of course it is terribly laggy. Is it a technical requirement? Isn't there a way to force H/W acceleration for Full HD High profile videos, even if that wouldn't mean full speed?

Just so that we wouldn't need to re-encode everything specifically for the HD2.
I mean, videos i would watch on my HD2 first are on my PC - hence, i always download the highest resolution i find. stuff i transfer to my HD2 need to be re-encoded, possibly transmuxed, which is indeed a hassle. If there was a way to read at least 720p, it would clearly be good.

Coreplayer fails at his, but it may be due to the H264 codec, as most 720p videos use this codec.
I am not aware of a player capable of decoding H264 to this date, which is a shame.
coreplayer decodes h264 just fine, but can't play a video larger than 1008 (if i remember right) pixels wide.
This has been discussed many times before. 720p playback is not enabled in the hardware and software decoding is not up to the task. And frankly if it did work you be draining your battery decoding details the screen couldn't display.

Exactly, many videos and trailers have them in 720, and is very annoying having to recode, I prefer to occupy the space, and if, although it is 480x800 anyway looks awesome
I tested a video 720 in tcpmp, the audio ok, the image very slow, but tcpmp is very old soft, and no optimized

Video size has absolutely 0 to do with codecs.
CorePlayer doesn't use any hardware decoding on the HD2, in contrast to the Album/WMP, and I believe Snapdragon is locked away from 1GHz/hardware 720p decoding anyway.
Hell, I can see stutter on H264 800x480 videos no matter how I encode it.
AFAIK snapdragon is capable of running 720p video but windows mobile isn´t.
@Yunabeco: did you try this Encoder? stutters on my xperia, but on the HD2 it works like a charm.. tried only some files, i encoded from 720p with subtitle and it looks great with the built-in-player..

Not in theoretical terms, but that's not what I wrote. I was joint pointing to the fact that most 720p videos use x264 compression due to being recorded from H264 encoded HDTV or downsampled H264 Blurays. As he said, he doesn't want to reencode.

There is a version of coreplayer that does use hardware acceleration. 1.3.1 build 7141. Don't know why the following ones don't...
benchmarks on my hd2 showed an app. 20% improvement with that version compared to the 1.3.6.
But then again, coreplayer is limited to 1008 pixels wide, so still no 720p anyway.

Uh ? I can play 720p vids on my device. I only get performance issues (running at 23% speed at most), using latest core player.

There is a 1008 pixel limitation on Coreplayer.....you can't be playing 720p videos on Coreplayer at all.

Doesn't have anything to do with Windows Mobile. The question is whether the device has the necessary drivers or not.
To answer the thread: No, it is not possible.
And even if it was possible, you would still have to reencode all the videos.
That's because even if a phone is capable of playing 720p, then it only plays certain file formats that it can harware accelerate.
This should answer everything. 720p gives no benefit at all because reencoding is always necessary.
720P play in ACER S200/F1
I can play 1280x720p wmv9 encoded movie in ACER s200/F1 with windows media player. but coreplayer can not. wmv7 and wmv8 encoded movies can not play with windows media player or coreplayer.
As you know our phone isn't really equipped to play most videos we throw at it, so what video bitrate/resolution/framerate have you found to work the best on the Optimus one?
And please mention which software you use to convert.

Which video player do you use on your phone?
I use Handbrake for all my videos. Starting from the "iPhone Legacy" profile, here are the settings I use to create H.264 files:
- Video: 480 x 320, H.264 (x264) codec, 768 Kbps bitrate, FPS same as source
- Audio: AAC (faac), stereo, 44.1 KHz, 128 kbps bitrate.
Image and sound are crystal clear, but of course, you can find your own favorite settings (just don't mess with the advanced settings, our CPU only handles the basic H.264 profile).
I use RockPlayer (the free version) for playback, because it can render .srt subtitles.

I'm using the m video player. It is pretty good and plays with subtitles. Loving it. Just that the phone doesn't support higher resolution mp4 videos. Jus the audio plays and the video drags. I use demo player to play flv. Some videos play fluently while other drag and drag!!

The above video 1280 high profile play just fine with stock player. Android 3.1 handle highprofile mp4 with the right spec.
The 1920 highprofile freeze my tab and only gets audio. And when do people want to play 1080p? Better to use 720p with good quality and bitrate.
The thing that's stand out with diceplayer is that you can play .mkv.
It Evan plays videos with dts.
If you want use to test and see different between diceplayer and stock you should upload videos that don't run on stock player
Have tried some highprofile mkv and its almost ok, for the most time it runs smoothly, but sometimes the picture hangs,studder.
It's almost there but it don't reach all the way, hopes that we will see updates so the playback gets better.
Also think that mp4 baseline and other video plays smoother in movie's when there is alot of movement and panning.

Same here, it opens, sits for a second, then closes.
Works pretty well with these ([email protected] AC3) TV shows that I download. Not bad since Mobo couldn't play these smoothly. Video has some hiccups but audio is smooth.
Downloaded a sample video ([email protected] DTS) and there was no video. Then the file stopped playing half way through (27 seconds in).
But I don't watch movies on my tablet anyway, only TV shows. And this seems to work great. Let's see if it'll be able to stream the TV shows smoothly. Thanks OP!

Ahh finally, since neither stock nor mobo could play my .mkv's (tv series) this is godsend.

Got Diceplayer playing back a 720p .MKV file (not sure if it was high profile or not) - not buttery smooth but better than anything else I've seen so far on HC3.1
Got a couple of questions, I was wondering if anyone can answer...
1) Diceplayer claims to offer hardware accelerated video decoding - is this for .MKVs?
2) Is that hardware acceleratation for Tegra 2
3) IF so, how are they managing it where so many others have failed? (Wasn't the core problem with offering HW acceleration for .MKVs down to lack of support from the nVidia side of things?)

It plays 720p high profile mkv without any issues. With 1080p, The video stops playing, but the audio still works for some, but wont for most of the 1080p videos either mkv or mp4. I think this might be achieved in the future.
720p playback is great !
1080p just freeze the tab but hey not even my Galaxy S II cant handle Full HD besides the resolution is useless for now anyway

I don't think it (Galaxy Tab/Tegra2) can handle level 4.1 or higher. But plays the rest better than anything else I've tried.

Hi, I know there has been some discussion about this already but I dont think this has been properly resolved.
I am fully aware of the tegra 2 video decoding limitations so lets not get into a discussion about that.
Basically, on the website Samsung suggest this can play 1080p video and there are various videos floating about suggesting it can plan youtube videos in 1080p format.
Now, here's the rub....
If you play a video in none desktop mode it plays great but this isnt in 1080p format, this is pretty obvious if you pump it out the HDMI. If you attempt to play it straight out of the browser, stock or Dolphin it stutters in 1080p and is just about watch-able in 720p.
So, I am wondering exactly what 1080p video sammy are actually referencing to?
On a side note however I have found that DICE and MXplayer do a really good job or playing main and high profile MKV's to the point where 720p high profiles are watchable at stock cpu 1 gig and smooth at 1.6 gig overclock (neither is hardware decoding, all done by CPU).

Samsung simply repeats what Nvidia states which is the tegra 2 can only play 1080p video encoded in Baseline profile. The problem is nobody uses Baseline profile as its obsolete and has poor compression.
Youtube certainly does not use Baseline profile when it re-codes videos uploaded to its servers and that is problem....

I dont think that is right, flash 3.2 is supposed to have tegra 2 hardware acceleration and should be able to play 1080p youtube stuff through a browser.

Just because it has hardware acceleration of a codec does not mean it can play all 1080p video as explained with h.264. If the video is encoded with too high of a bitrate the tegra 2 hardware accelerator chokes, and it does not take much to choke it....
Unfortunately advertisement is inherently deceptive as the case with the link you provided.
Does anyone have any more info regarding this? I really thought that with the 3.2 Honeycomb update they would optimize the Tegra 2 GPU more, but it still cant play any stream or youtube video at 1080p.
I have tried playing the 1920x1080 with different players; the preinstalled video player, Real Player, and Soul Player -but no success. I have HC 3.1 as the 3.2 is not yet available for my region. Thanks in advance!

I've been experimenting with this a lot, lately, and playing HD video remains a problem. While I haven't tried 1080p, 720p is already horrible. With every player I've tried (MX, Dice, Mobo, VPlayer, QQ, mVideo and probably more) there's some form of lag, and some don't even seem to have the capacity to start an HD video. So far, the player best capable of playing HD video seems to be DicePlayer, as suggested above. Also MX Video Player can manage some HD videos, with a proper setup.
If anyone else has suggestions for playing HD video, please tell them. I'm very interested to see if I missed any good players.
If you're looking to be able to play your average HD rip found on the internet you'll be sorely disappointed. If you encode your own though, it's easy to get good quality playback.
My best advice for good 720p video playback is to encode your own files with Handbrake using high profile with B-Frames turned off, CABAC entropy off, 8x8 transform off and weighted p-frames off. Set your max width to 1280 and let the height be whatever it needs to be depending on the source aspect ratio. I use either CQ of 22 or so or I'll go with a 2-pass encode using average bitrate in the 3-4k range. Resulting files play great in Dice Player with full hardware acceleration.
For those looking to play their already encoded 1080p material off of their LAN I don't know what to say; the device won't do it . . it's a limitation on tegra 2 that has specific codec settings supported and not all. Other than re-encoding all of your stuff the only other alternative for LAN playback would be to run a Plex media server on your LAN which is what I do at home. Quality wont be great but it will be watchable and at least you'll have access to your media.
