I am new to the boards as a poster, i've been reading for a while now and I must thank everyone especially in the development section of the forum for their incredible amount of help and expertise.
It has officially come time for my first noob question-
Can anyone help me out or lead me to a guide perhaps that will allow me to use OpenOffice on my webtop? This is really what I bought the lapdock for-it just came in yesterday.
I managed to get webtop2sd working on my own, lxterminal is functional. That's all I've got so far in fear of ruining anything else.
I'm not at all well-versed in any linux script or anything of the sort. I know windows like the back of my hand.. just so happens that my windows PC totally bit the dust(motherboard) last night and I'm forced into learning this stuff a little quicker. Why not, right?
I have done some searching, all of it leads me to a bunch of lingo and commands I don't understand yet. If anyone can point me in the direction of some help or provide me with a little one-on-one that would be awesome. I'm looking forward to helping others with these kinds of issues down the road.

Assuming you have webtop2sd and the linux addon installed properly
(with the linux image on your external SD), do the following:
1) Click the Penguin. You will get a window that says it has found an image in you external SD card.
2) Simply press "okay" on that window.
3) Once it shows the Pdmenu, select DebianMenus>Applications>Shells>Bash. it will bring up an xterm script which reads "[email protected]:/#"
4) To get open office, you must type "apt-get install openoffice.org" without the quotes.
5) Agree to install/update, and it will read "[email protected]:/#" once it is done.
6) At this point, and from now on, you can do steps 1-3 and simply type "openoffice.org" into xterm. It will take a second, but it will load a fully functional OpenOffice.
Basically you just need to know the package names to use this same structure for other programs. I use "openoffice.org", "iceweasel" (a firefox alternative, since my firefox keeps breaking), and "geany" (a C++ IDE for my programming classes). These are installed using "apt-get install packagename" and run using "packagename" in the bash script as well.

I didn't want to be that guy posting 95823094820394 threads about the same thing so I just figured I'd bump the one i created with some explanation:
I have webtop2sd properly(i believe, anyway) installed. LXterminal is functional. I also have linuxdisk in sdcard(-ext)/WebTopMOD . I'm not sure what to do from here. the help given above gave instructions to click the penguin while in webtop and run certain commands, but the penguin only brings up the webtop configurator. i have no other icons to click.
My goal, again, is just to get open office running on my webtop, for now. That's really it, the rest i'm sure will come with time. Thank you again for any help.
I seem to have figured it out for the most part using Alex's guide. However, the installation threw a couple errors, couldn't really tell you what they were because they were epic and I'm clueless as far as linux for the time being. However, my educated guess and deduction points towards insufficient memory. I set up my webtop partition to be 1GB, because I'm using a 16GB sd card that's virtually full of music. Is 1GB skimping it if I want to install openoffice/other linux packages? What size partition is recommended?

4GB is recommended, though I would think based on the package sizes that openoffice.org would squeeze into a 1gb partition. With this phone I would definitely recommend an external SD. My 32GB holds my webtopmod, music, and every hack, mod, bootanimation, theme, kernel, radio, and zip I've ever flashed. Do it.
Also openoffice worked, But i think it dosent match the atrix ubuntu core perfectly.
An error name:"openoffice Writer2laterx dose not configured" happened again and again.

i am using an external SD, a 16 GB one. i'm about to make a 4GB partition and start from scratch. eventually, i'm picking up a 32 no doubt.
After making a full re-installation of everything I can't get open office to install? I tried both via terminal and Synaptic both fail with error messages.
"dpkg error processing tzdata" Error code (1) error in package
Any ideas?

Cant open files from sdcard
Hello, I finally got openoffice installed, but I dont know how I can open files located in my sdcard. Can anyone please help me with this?

This will wipe your device. backup anything and everything before proceeding.
If you are not willing to take it upon yourself to research any problems that arrise and fix them yourself DO NOT ATTEMPT.

If you are unwilling to start with a fresh nookie color SDcard NO NOT ATTEMPT.

This is for advanced users. Make sure you read and reread everything before attempting anything! now on to the good stuff. I just wanted to gather the various posts and links that i used to gt a fully working froyo running on my nc from the internal memory (emmc) and present them in a step by step guide for others wanting to run NF from their internal memory and have no need for B&N stock. Flash is working if you install the proper apk. this is not installed out of the box. After installing to your EMMC you will be able to use any sdcard as you normally would in android. I am using a 16gb card with no problems.

1. first you will want a fresh NF sd card. I tried to use my seasoned nf card and ended with a brick... if you have google apps installed you will not be able to get past the android screen and will have to reimage as stated above. create your fresh nf sdcard following the steps at nookdevs here

As we say in french, you must call a cat a cat. Your NC wasn't bricked at all. You simply needed to touch each corner of the screen one at a time when on "touch the android" screen, starting with the top left corner, then clockwise.
Would have saved you some time
If I were you (if I may..), I'd put all the links the bottom of the post. Would make reading easier. As for my code to copy sdcard content, go on and post it directly. Opening multiple pages only makes things more complicated. No problem. As for the Volume keys and gapps, it could be ambiguous, those add-ins aren't required at all. Simple leave a link to nookie tips on nook devs for those who want it?

I tried the touching four corners. no go. several roms required that back when i was using a D1... I couldnt for the life of me figure it out so just scrapped and started from scratch.
thanks for your input. i planned to clean this up a bit, was just in a rush writing the original. Thanks again for your help. couldnt have gotten this far without your steps to start off.
Eager to try this out ... but will it be able to see a non-NF SD card I enter in? Will it recognize it, and let me see it as mass storage when the Nook is plugged into my PC?
Very well written, just copy and paste the code into the console for the most part ... Runs nice and fast, I have a few FC's to clean up but that is due to me not factory resetting the NC prior to doing this as I am an impatient person! I must say it is very nice not to have the B&N notification bar at the bottom of the screen.
So if this is really 2.2, does it have flash?

a) What vold file? Searching for "0.5.8 vold" on this board produces no hits.
b) Executable permissions on what? This "vold" file or something else?

Also, slightly random: Why doesn't adb ever seem to work over USB with my Nook Color? 2.1 ROM, Nookie Froyo on SD 0.5.8 or 0.5.9, it never sees a device. By contrast, it works fine on my G2.

Re-run ADB configuration. Make sure id is 0x2080.
How do we fix the SD card error. I am unable to do anything with the SD card.

Wow. This is INSANELY important and this is the first time I've ever seen mention of it. Every other post simply assumes your ADB "just works." I have been endlessly frustrated by the lack of working ADB on this thing such that every time I do something with my NC I have to find a way to first install ADBWireless.

What a great idea. If only someone had talked about this weeks ago... Anyway now that it seems people are going to be trashing their nooks trying to do this, it's probably simpler for one to just boot into SD and...

That's off the top of my head and totally untested. Seriously. It probably doesn't work, and is totally unrecommended. Anyone who types "rm -rf *" in their emmc system is saying goodbye to their stock OS and will have to live with their decision. All GPL disclaimers apply.
Note also that IOMonster has a nice bootable clockwork SDcard that does all kinds of things, and automating this type of migration is only a matter of time now.
Update: Actually the steps aren't THAT different. /just sayin'.

I had the same reaction reading the post. Not only is it unfair to you, because I have read your post before attempting anything, but it's also unfair to me because it suggest that he did most of the practical work..
Anyway does it really matter? People who don't regularly read the forum often don't give a Jack of who's responsible for what. Those who do willl know you were first in line. Anyway, I understand your frustration I should have said something. I was just fed up. Sorry.
Please know that my original post recomanded doing dd's of all partition. That way reverting back to stock was easy. My post also mentionned emptying data.....

Ah, I just mean it's all the same idea-- out with the old, in with the new. Nothing particularly genius about it. In any event, it's not really a matter of credit. We all stand on the shoulders of giants. I was just amused is all... so let's just have fun, eat, drink, be merry, and dance in the rain.
It may turnout that English isn't the OP's native language. Although it isn't mine either..
Nothing really seems genius once you get to understanding it.. but as a newcomer, I still had a bit of trouble getting the sdcard to mount..

WARNING: This script can be dangerous if you do not know what you're doing!!! I am not responsible for any of your files or hard drives that are deleted if the script is used the wrong way.
The following Bash script (built for Ubuntu) is a simple script that I wrote that does the following:
1. Lets you chose any non-SD ROM.
2. Lets you chose the drive to partition. (WARNING: This ONLY ignores /dev/sda as it assumes that it's your main hard drive. If you have more than one hard drive, do NOT use this unless you know what you're doing!!!)
3. Automatically partitions a Boot partition, a system partition (large enough to hold some BIG ROMs...), a data partition and the rest of your SD card (whatever size it may be) is partitioned as a standard FAT32 space.
4. It modifies both the ramdisk and the vold to boot from the SD and to see that 4th partition as the SD card.
5. If the ROM doesn't have gapps built in and uses the install script to copy them from your last ROM (like CM and MIUI do), it will download and install the gapps.
6. It creates all the required symlinks.
I've only tested it with my 8GB microSD and with MIUI. The permissions are not set up correctly for now due to a bug of sorts... but the ROM that I tested boots and works fine. (Set it all to 777 for now.)
This is only the first version. I just wrote it today. If you find bugs or have a better idea on how to do certain things (like ONLY display USB drives and SD cards) PLEASE let me know here.
If nothing in this thread makes sense, it's because I'm tired...
Update: Adding a bit more info.
Its a really good idea, but not many people can try it unless it's ported to Windows or Mac.

I know most people use Windows but Windows isn't very well equipped to do the stuff that this script does. I could always try to make an actual program (make it in c or something) but that would require a complete rewrite. I mostly wrote this for myself (to make my life easier while I'm porting a ROM to the Nook) but figured someone else might be able to use it. (Mostly the people who make the SD img's for everyone else, not the general public.)

Well yeah, it is pretty hard. Anyways, your script works for me. Its really nice.
You can run bash in Windows using Cygwin
What's the benefit from using this script on the pc and not using verygreens installer on the nook?

What installer? I didn't realize he had an installer that would let you install any "non-SD compatible" ROM into an SD card and make it SD-compatible. >.<

Reading that it looks like the differences are:
Mine:
Can do all that in the PC without having to touch the nook.
It's all automated. (Like downloading the gapps.)
You run the script then just pop the SD card into the Nook and go.
Meant more for devs who are testing new builds left and right or who are building an image for others to use.

Doesn't require Linux nor any Linux experience (to choose the correct drive from the drive list that the script gives you.)
Meant for the average usage who wants to be able to easily update their ROMs and install new kernels without "wiping" the SD card's data partition.

I am using verygreen's installer on my Nook right now, but I am going to start playing with this script
P.S. Linux rocks, everyone should have it...for those who don't want to let go of Windows, you should at least have Linux installed as a virtual machine on your box using VirtualBox.
So I was playing with this for a few moments on my Mac at work today. Am I copying the ROM archive, say MIUI_us_encore_1.8.5_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed_andmer.zip or cm_encore_full-163.zip, into the same location as the Install2SD script?
Or am I to uncompress these roms into their respective folders and copy that folder into the same location as the Install2SD script?
I have yet to get another uSD to play with, so I have obviously not gotten to far with this just yet. I will be back to my Ubuntu machine after I get home from work with a new uSD to play with.

I haven't tested to see if this works on a mac. That said, just run the script and it will tell you where to put the files (in linux (in nautilus to be exact...)) If not, when you run it the first time, it will create the necessary folder and you can put the files there.
Below,I will list the steps I do to setup my webtop,I am using webtop2sd on a 32GB PNY Class 10 card, and used a 2GB Transcend (not sure on class,im sure its old) card to test with, same results with both pretty much,so I think something im doing is causing it to stop working.
What happends when it stops, is it just wont come up anymore. When I plug the phone into my lapdock, I either get a bluebox with an HDMI not found error (I'm assuming from the dock itself), or the red moto logo that just moves around. I would try resetting the phone, and reinstalling the executable through the webtop2sd app, and it still wont launch. This has happened about 5 times so far, I would get it setup how I would want it to be,then it stops working.
So here is what I would do (there is a phone reboot between each step pretty much)
1. Use my PC to partiton the SD card, ~22 GB FAT32 followed by an ~8GB ext3
2. Use webtop2sd to create the webtop, default settings, aside from the missing dock fix, which I only used 2-3 out of the 5 times I ran it
3. Once I am in the new webtop, I would install terminal and synaptic,then reboot.
4. Then I would run the webtop scripts, version 1.4, hitting yes to everything, then a reboot
5. I would check to see if synaptic is installed, the last time i did this, I had to use aptitude to install it.
6. Once I got synaptic up,I would use it to install the xfce4 package. Just about everytime I would go to install it,I would get an error on the "tzdata" package, the only way I could get past it,would be to uninstall tzdata, then most of the time,whatever I would go to install would reinstall it anyway. This does concern me, because when I remove tzdata, it appears to be tied to a critical package, which may be the source of my problem,but I am not sure.
7. Once I would get xfce4 installed,I would add xfdesktop and xfce-panel to the startup list (those may not be the exact package names,there is another thread I reference for that, can't remember atm, nor can I remember the exact name of that startup file, but its on this forum somewhere). I would also comment out the awmdock one and the webtop desktop one as well.
8. I would reboot,and it would actually boot up xfce4 just fine, the only gripe I have,is that I would usually get an error on the trash service needing thunar, when it is already installed. The one time,I was able to install open office, and test out some youtube videos.
9. At about this time, I would reboot my phone to see if it still works, then I would get the "bouncing moto logo of death" on my lapdock screen, and would have to start over.
One other unrelated note,about every other time I would reboot my phone, it would come up saying SIM card not installed, so I would reboot it again to fix the problem. So there were normally 2 reboots when a reboot is required.
So,I guess I would ask a few direct questions about my problem
1. Has anyone else had a problem with the tzdata package? Is there a way around it without uninstalling it?
2. Could the full xfce4 package be breaking the webtop? Do I only need certain packages out of it?
3. Even though I tested this on 2 different SD cards, could my problem be that the files are just getting corrupted on the card? Its pretty consistant though, I canpretty much say "Look,my awesome webtop is now setup how I want it to be, now watch me reboot my phone to see it not work anymore" everytime I go to set it up.
Info on my phone:
Stock firmware, unlocked bootloader, cwm installed (I thought I needed it,but not for webtop2sd) and rooted running latest webtop2sd. I havent messed with the stock webtop on the phone itself, i rather not since I like having it as a backup.
Btw, I am a bit of a linux n00b, I've pretty much just been reading what other people have been doing. Any help would be appreciated, thanx

I have no issues and I have webtop with the Lapdock with the Ninja ROM. My phone is bootloader unlocked and rooted. I personally think you modded too much if that's possible. If I were you, I would start over and try webtop with stock firmware or a ROM with a fresh sd card. That way you can know if your phone has a hardware issue or if you modded too much. Hope this helps.

I can assure you that your phone is more modded than mine is, since im running stock firmware. What I'm doing is really not that much modding, I'm just trying to get a better interface running on the webtop, which people have posted saying they have the same one working on theirs. Its also not that I can't get it working, its really not hard, just time consuming, I just need to know why it keeps breaking on phone reboots...

I honestly think you should try some of my suggestions. I think starting fresh is your best option. When something doesn't wok right or something goes wrong. Starting fresh can fix your issues.

why would I do that when the issue has something to do with the files on the SD card?
webtop2sd copies the webtop files from the phone, to the SD card,so the files on the phone are basically out of the equation at that point. So its not a problem with android,but with the other linux files from webtop on the SD card

Of course, I ran into another snag, I need to access windows network shares, and Samba doesn't seem to be functioning, specifically, the samba-common package wont install correctly.

Yeah his post was kind of light on the details.
What it looks like is that when the /var/lib/dpkg/samba-common.postinst script is run by dpkg --configure -a it calls a program named ucf that in turn wants to run the symbolic link of "readlink" located in /usr/bin.
This is where i got stuck. I am by no means a linux guru.
I tried deleting the symlink to force ucf to use the "readlink" in the path, tried setting the symlink to point to the "readlink" located in /system/bin and in /system/xbin, and set the symlink to the busybox in /system/bin and to the custom busybox webtop2sd uses in /system/etc/webtop2sd but it did not help.
The output of dpkg changed slightly depending on which "readlink" ucf used but still the same error, "readlink: invalid option", and no samba-common.
Btw my busybox is 1.19.3

I was told on IRC that the actual problem is that the stock kernel does not include CIPs support, which is what is required for connectivity
but I still dont like the fact that samba package is still broken...
I'm using faux123's 0.2.3 kernel though, which might have CIPs support. Its hard to tell from the changelog and features listed in his kernel thread. Btw the 0.2.3 kernel fixes the broken top panel.
I am by no means an expert, i just dove into this project 4 days ago, and since then, I've had to reformat my SD card about 8 times before I figured out how to get it stable. But now I have it running pretty stable, there are some issues still, but it at least runs linux pretty well. I'm mainly posting this because this would have saved me a lot of digging 4 days ago, and I figured I would help out any n00bs that just got a lapdock and just started playing with webtop.
*Disclaimer* I am not an expert, if you have a problem with any of these steps, please do not post them here, but in their respective threads. I take no credit for developing any of this, im just posting a list of steps from multiple sources. Also, if you break something, its not my fault*
The Guide
By the end of this guide, you will have a more functional linux as your webtop, with the XFCE4 interface. This uses webtop2sd, so if you break anything, you should be able to start over.
You will need a rooted Atrix, a lapdock (or other external device for using webtop on), and a microSD card, I suggest 2GB or bigger. I have a 32GB PNY class 10 card, for example.
1. Lets format/partition the SD card. Sogarth explains here how to do that. I highly suggest NOT doing this on your phone,and use a PC instead.

3. Now plug it in to your lapdock, and it should boot up into the new webtop. You should see 2 icons in the middle, the awn-dock config tool, and the webtop config tool. We just need to focus on the latter one. Open that up, click on Administration on the left,and click on Install by lxterminal. Try clicking on the terminal icon on the dock, if it comes up, you are gold. If it acts funky, like your screen goes black but doesn't open the terminal, open up the webtop config tool again, and the button to install it should be lit up again. You know its installed if you click install,close out the config tool, and reopen it to see Install grayed out.
4. If all goes well, you should be at a terminal. The first thing we want to do, is fix a really annoying and OS breaking bug, regarding the tzdata package. It seems to be corrupted, so we want to make sure it doesn't get in the way of installing other packages. This issue was the bane of my existence for 3 days.

type this into the terminal to bring up the said file so you can edit it

then put exit 0 on the 3rd empty line
I would reboot your phone after doing this, just for good measure
5. When you get back into the webtop, lets run the Webtop Scripts, the files and instructions are here for that. This will fix many broken dependencies. Arvati did a great job with these fixes!

just put that file in your downloads folder, then run the commands from that first code box, and I just said yes everytime it asked you what you wanted to do. I would reboot your phone again after this.
6. Now lets start installing stuff! Lets start with synaptic, which works a lot better if you install via command line instead of the webtop config tool.
So run this from the terminal:

7. Open up synaptic by typing 'sudo synaptic' into the terminal. Lets install XFCE4 now, just search for that there,and install the XFCE4 package, it should install all of the other required packages to run the new interface.
8. Once it is installed,we need to disable the webtop interface,and enable xfce4. I referenced this thread to do that:

You could use an app like ESFileExplorer on your phone to drag and drop files, this is what I have been using,and it works pretty well for both direct windows shares and FTP. The Mobile View is great for having a window open for secondary tasks like this.

i actually managed to do all this on my own, but just recently came into a unexpected problem. i'm kind of a linux noob, and it seems like the file manager button on xfce4-panel doesn't lead to the stock file manager i was using before (doesn't lead to anything), does anyone have any suggestions for a good file manager to replace it with?

I have a weird problem where the lapdock doesn't detect webtop and says no hdmi input detected. Not sure if you know anything about that, but just wanted to let you guys know (might be a defect on my lapdock). I'm trying to figure out a fix for that now.
I would suggest starting over if that happened,sounds like something broke
as for an XFCE4 file manager, it should install Thunar by default

To the point of installing XFCE4, and synaptic just sits on preparing packages forever... I let it sit for 30+ minutes last night and going on almost 60 minutes currently...is something wrong or does it take that long?
you might want to cancel that, reboot your phone and try again, it should not take that long

i purchased 2 nook tablets for an 8 and 11 year old. im debating whether to not root it because i think it wil be easier for them to follow interface and the only downside i see is having to pay for apps that may be free on amazon or play store. can i have some input here? is there a super easy rooted rom that a child can follow? or are there many free aps if i just keep it as an out of box nook. thanks so much guys, these are the 1st gen nook tablets not the hd
Rooting just opens up the device. You'll still have full access to the stock interface and BN app store and what have you.
You can make a really child friendly user imterface with a rooted device running an alternate launcher. That way you can make different home screen with the apps you want them to use easily accessable.
Give it a go! It's really easy to go back should you want to.

thanks i dread having to do the whole sd card ota block thing again and havent done it in about a year. is there a good video out there to walk me through step by step again for the ota block? and can someone recommend the best barest bones rom to root afterwards to make it as easy for a child to use as possible?
and i think i had trouble the last time because only a certain size sd card could be used. wasn't it just the 2 or 4 gb that worked? thanks and sorry for all the questions. just have to get this done tonight so i can fedex it to texas to get there in time for xmas.
A rooted nook is just marginally better than a stock nook in terms of access to more apps, but might be more confusing to kids since it has two coexisting interfaces. You would be better off sticking with stock or go all out android with full-fledged CM10.
I think the rooted stock NT is loads better than than the true stock. LOADS! Had the stock reader dealt better with my side loaded books I wouldn't have installed CM10 internally.
I agree that the double interface can be a bit confusing but to kids that age it shouldn't be much of a problem.
The OTA block is just a process of a few clicks from within the NT hidden settings app.

im trying to use the same albert video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zbT1Fj38nE, but the file doesnt even seem to be there anymore, and his updated video shows how to create a root v4 card. im totally confused. do you still need to block otas? and if so is there another link that shows that step by step. im ready to just send these back and forget the whole thing
No need for any video!
There are a couple of ready-made root images that are almost automatic. Burn the card, pop it in, install zip from card and you're rooted. Go to Google Play (it may show up as "market" at first and make sure you have updated version of NT Hidden settings to block OTA. It could not be much easier! If can watch a film on your DVD player you can do this without instruction video!

thank you so much for this help, figured it would be a slam dunk from here but when i try and unzip brians ntsdcard image file it says its corrupted and when i try and run alberts 32 diskimager it says it cant computer it. ive reinstalled and rebooted 3 times. can someone else try and open these file to se if its just my computer? dont know why it would be. or is there another work around? i heard he just sells the bootdisks. maybe thats the way to go. thanks again for all your help
I downloaded Albert's package. My virus protection alerter me, but that's probably because of the scripts that do need to be in that package, so I ignored that (I trust Albert!).
I then unzipped that into anew folder.
Inside that folder I find Wini32DiskImager, and I just open it from within that folder. (I realize I was mistaken in my previous post, This is the disk imager I prefer to use even though I've used others as well)
The program just opens in a small window. In the "choose file box" you automatically get directed to the folder you opened up from. That's why I keep my images there. Pick the one you want (you'll jut have one unless you've added)
Click "Write" when you've made sure the sd-cards drive letter is the one in the top right box.

this is the error i get the program cant start because libgcc_s dw2_dll is missing from your computer
I have now downbloaded and unszipped Brians file as well. Totally problem free!
What are you using to unzip? I use 7-zip.
By the way, I can now see that it looks like Brian's image needs a 2 GB card.
And for clairfication, you don't actually have to install Win32DiskImager. Just open it from within the folder!

Check the folder. That dll should be in the folder. It is in mine (the one I created just now). Are you really opening the program from within the folder?
The simplest and best rooting instruction I've found is one provided by liquidzoo's here.
I'd also suggest that before rooting the NT, you make a backup of your NT current software using the backup option of the same Recovery program that you will use to install the rooting mods.
If you have problem writing disk image with Win32DiskImager, you can use DiskImage_1_6_WinAll.exe instead.

We'll learn soon enough the moment the kids want some recently released game apps and find out they can't have them because they are not compatible with 2+ year-old Android Gingerbread which is what the stock ROM is based on.

You are getting your terminology confused as well. Asking what is the best barest bones ROM to root is incorrect.
To root means you give the nook superuser access which in turn allows you to load play store, apps, new launcher, and any SU related functions.
A ROM is a fully functioning version of android. IE: CM 7(GB), CM 9(ICS), CM 10(JB). It automatically has root access built in.
As for loading a ROM due to worrying about the kids and the interface, stock nook sucks...period. My 8 y/o has had zero issues with either cm 7 or cm10. Do yourself and them a favor and put at least CM 7 but preferably CM 10 on it.

My sons are 8 and 12. Trust me, your kids won't have a bit of trouble with the CM10 interface. One of the nice extras in CM10 is that you can configure profiles to block them from getting into apps you don't want them to -- like settings, email, etc... Also, you can PIN-protect the Play Store so that they don't accidentally purchase anything.

Since the OP will be using two NTs I'd suggest building the CM10 SD card from scratch (using the info and tools posted at http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/how-to-guide-bootable-cm7cm9cm10-sdcard-for-nook-tablet/ and which I have provided a summary digest here), since there have been reports of NTs running the precooked CM10 SD image having identical MAC addresses and hence not able to concurrently access a same WiFi network (in this case the OP's household WiFi network).
I'm not saying rooted stock is as good as for example CM10. Not at all! CM 10 is awsome, and user interface is really nice!
But for a user that is intimidated by even the simple rooting process putting CM10 internally should not be even considered at this point. Thankfully the sd version of CM runs just as smooth as the internal install (at least it does from my 8GB Sandisk class 4) so that could certainly be an option as soon as the OP has figured out how to use the disk image writer! Yesterday even that was troublesome.
What I'm saying (if not straight out in my previous posts) is that rooted stock certainly is not bad! It depends on the kids and what they are used to if it will be "enough". For the kids near me (ages 4, 8,5 and 14) it certainly would! The bigger ones are girls that read a lot and apart from reading, watching Youtube videos and surfing (reading fashion blogs...) they are happy with a few cute games. Maybe if they had been boys and/or had tech savvy parents they would have asked for more, but they don't.
Either way, let's try to help the OP as well as we can!

i think it was the winzip that was screwing me up. i used 7zip and it opened right up and i burned it onto the sd card. then after i powered off i held the n button and the N button and i was only brought to a screen that said so you want to factory reset. isnt that the way to boot up? it didnt seem to recognize the unziped ntboot file. thanks
Try to just boot up (from completely turned off) without holding any buttons. If you do need to keep the "n" pressed down at first, that's just for a few seconds and then let go. Some people need to keep the Tablet turned off and insert apowered USB cable (menaing it's coneected to the charger, not computer) to get it to boot from sd-card. No buttons pressed! I have never needed that myself, but I hear many others do.
