[Q] H+ with no data in certain areas - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I am with Virgin Mobile in Canada, and when I am on my University campus, I can't get data about mid day. It shows that I have an H+ signal, and I have about 2-3 bars, but nothing with data will go through. I am on cognition rom with the original modem for my phone (tried that to see if it fixed it). Does anyone have any ideas as to how I might fix this? Or is it just major carrier congestion. It gets better when I am off campus ( less than a kilometer away). Thanks if anyone can help.

If virgin mobile is anything like bell then you may be able to change you ap point for better service. I live in a small bfn town and from time to time my net speed suffers for no reason. so after some searching on the net I found that bell had a number of ap points.
pda.bell.ca
Pda2.bell.ca
inet.bell.ca
I also found I get better net sometimes when I edit the accesspoint and remove the proxy info, so I made an ap entry with bio proxy also.
Them I just use an access point switcher/rotater to switch which ap I am using.
The differences in speed may be all in my imagination

Thanks for the suggestions. So far they aren't working. I think I am going to go back to complete stock and see how that goes.

Improve network connection by unlocking?

I live in an area that has...umm...less than stellar tmobile service. Call/sms is ok most of the time but the data connection here is nonexistant for all intensive purposes. Can't use Pandora, can't really browse the internet, can't do much of anything that involves a data connection.
I was wondering if there was a way to improve this. The AT&T service out here has pretty good signal strength and 3g. I know both are gsm. There isn't a way to use their towers without getting a new number and sim, is there?
Is there anything else I can do to improve data reception? I love my phone and tmobile is pretty good everywhere around me...it's just pretty bad here.

Yeah you won't be able to ride ATTs network with a tmo SIM. The only thing I can recommend is try flashing different modems and see if any of them help increase your data. The modem bible is somewhere floating in the first couple pages of the dev section. Failing that, wifi when you are at home is gonna be the only fix until tmo gets a stronger tower out where you're at.

[Q] Optus Australia

I have read somewhere that some people are experiencing their data connection to freeze or have idle times even with good reception.
Now I have never had an Aussie firmware, in particular the modem part of the firmware which I believe is the part related to the phone performance?????
I have tried disabling and enabling the fast dormancy. Turning off data and enabling it again fixes the problem. The hang isn't permanent so things like email, syncing, weather all update fine, its just web pages can sit loading for ages or time out with no acitivity shown. But try again a few minutes later and the internet is super quick without the reception of tower changing.
Does anyone else with Optus Australia, or vodafone or telstra for that matter, have the data stalling issue? What exact modem version are you using?
Yeah i think this is actually related to Optus's network.
I have scrubbed my phone and applied the XXKH3 firmware and it seems a bit better to me. I also disabled Fast Dormancy.

I have too agree with Simmo3D the current state of not just optus is abysmal.
But there is a light at the end of the tunnel with the NBN it should is ease the congestion that we have been having to deal with because of the explosion of people updateing there facebook status.
Also we have both telstra and vodafone putting in new 850MHZ tower which can handle a much larger amount of traffic which means the Que time or "Idle time" will be reduced.
I had wondered about it being Optus... but turning data off and back on straight away seems to fix it instantly so wondering whether it isn't because of congestion otherwise it wouldn't always fix the problem temporarily .... but I am no expert. It isn't a slow down, its a complete stop with no data going either way. Occasionally it will sit there sending permanently but that isn't always the case when it stalls.
I am not disagreeing just trying to confirm whether this is definately optus or something else related ot the wrong modem component for optus network.
I never noticed this on my previous phone (i8000 on win mo and alos a buggy android port) but to be honest I didn't really play around on the net so much because I didn't have anywhere near this amount of data I have now and it wasn't as appealing to play round with online....
Were either of you on Optus with another phone you used data on a lot? Did that experience the same stalling of data.
no problems on telstra here
My dad is optus and has the same issue on his phone. Me and my gf are on Vodafone and have a slight issue but not as bad becuase were mainly on the new network. Telstra finally turned on QoS so there is no problem on that network.
Remember there are 800 open cases with the ombudsman over optus's delivery of service.
There are tweaks to the build.prop file to mitigate phone issues but won't help as much as if optus fixed there infrastructure

Thanks all. Looks like concensus says optus is the main culprit and i don't need to head down the flashing of a typical optus modem firmware with my imported phone to fix these dramas. Thankfully its not all the time so I can live with the slight frustrations at times. At least the voice calls aren't doing the same thing...

As far as I know there is a known bug in the phones software that stalls data transfers when switching between 3g and h. The fix is to lock the phones data out of h.
To do this use the stock phone dialpad and key in *#301279#
Select option 2
Select option 1
Then use menu key and go right back or end.
Should not be using h network now and your stalling should be fixed.

Try the Irish Modem stronger locks .

Slow download speed on all roms and all radios.

I'm on Straight Talk ATT. I'm getting any where between 120 & 350 ping and no more than 145kbps down. The usual 800kbps-1Mbps down from what I've read is normal. Obviously the down speed is wrong. The ping majority of the time is closer to the 350ms even when in a full bars area and my g/f Atrix 2 is getting ping in the 60's at the same place.
I'm on vacation so I've spent the past 3 days searching XDA and the Internet at large for solutions. I've tried just about every variation of keywords I can find. These searches are what have led me to most of the things listed that I have tried.
I've noticed that Speedtest.net seems to think I'm in Florida when I'm in Peoria, IL and it thinks I'm in Indiana when I'm in Davenport, IA. I'm not sure where Peoria routes their internet but everything in Davenport goes through Chicago. In Dubuque, IA it does seem to find me coming out of Madison WI or Wisconsin Falls which does seem to be more or less correct. I'm not positive if this is a symptom or just the speed test app being dumb.
The first two weeks the phone worked fine. 2-3Mbps on H+ during peak hours in the same spot and 5.5-6Mbps off peak. There is a possibility something I did may have cause it but other than small tweeks to the Straight Talk APN I don't know what could have caused it. I got Paranoid Android and was pretty happy but sometimes my tethering wasn't so great which is why I played with it at all.
I'm rooted and have cwm installed. I've tried: CM7.2, Stock(fruit cake) 2.3.4 & Paranoid Android 2.99.
I've also tried the following radios: 1.77.15P US ATT, 1.77.37P US ATT(12 Dec 2011), 1.87.00R and 1.97.00R hktw retail 23 Jun 2011.
Certain radios create a smoother more constant connection speed but still capped at approx 145kbps.
I've since tried various adjustments to the APN settings including with and without proxy settings, with and with out default, supl, mms and even purging all/most of the ATT APNs by renaming the APN XML file. This gives me one default APN for ATT and my Straight Talk APN. This has had no effect on the issue. I've also found on XDA some folks sharing ATT APN settings files and I've tried using those as well.
I've never dropped the phone or otherwise abused it so I have difficulty with the idea that it's bad hardware. Also the fact that my upload is decent almost makes me a little dismissive of that idea as well.
Any help or insight in to the issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this and consider my problem!

Occasional data connection hangs on 3G/HSPA

I have an I9300 which I use on Vodafone UK. The phone was a sim-free handset, CSC=BTU
I'm currently running firmware XXEMC2, rooted
I sometimes get an issue where my HSPA data connection will stall. All I'll see is the "up" arrow flashing for around 2 minutes, but no data will be downloaded.
After around this period of time, or if I switch phone off/on line the connection will start working again
A few times I've noticed when this occurs the data connection symbols will disappear completely - so perhaps the phone or network is totally timing out.
This has occurred with a variety of firmware levels back to XELLA and before. My suspicion is that it's a network issue, but was wondering if anyone sees this on any other network.
I am considering trying one of the vodafone branded firmware's MODEMs in case there's anything they tweak that might work better.

I've now tried a variety of modems (including vodafone fw / modem) & full firmware but continue to see this issue from time to time.
If left alone after something like up to 5 minutes the connection will drop and recycle. No idea if that's phone or network initiated.
It is however VERY frustrating. My strong suspicion is that this is a VODAFONE NETWORK ISSUE not a handset issue. Of course as my phone is a sim free phone it may be tricky convincing vodafone of this fact.
Has anyone else seen these issues, especially on vodafone uk?
It *seems* to occur more on a few particular cells (well I notice the ones at gym for example) and less (possibly never) on suresignal, and just occasionally at work (small cell?) Overload on the cells is my suspicion ... classic vodafone.
I've never noticed this on 3UK, though that's been on a nexus S (currently lost ). If only 3UK had coverage at work I'd switch back easily. Vodafone has broader geographic coverage but I'm convinced the network is more flakey
When you have an UP arrow, that is upload. This signifies a connection going out from your phone to the network. If this hangs for a while and does not produce any connection back (DOWN arrow), this would definitely signify a network issue to me. Sometimes on the S3, the signal bars say there is a signal when there isn't or there is a signal but the connectivity between you and the network is non-existent
There are several things that can cause this. It can be Mast, Network, SIM, Modem, baseband... Its hard to say. All you can do is rule them out one at a time.
My gut feel is network too. It's definately happening with a good decent signal when stationary.I need to check more closely but it also seems location dependent (but not single location)

Decent Download speed - Horrible Upload speed

Hi All,
I have a Rooted GS5 and I'm 1.5 miles from a 4G Tower (Not LTE). My Download is in the mid to high teens (18Mbs)and my upload is sub 1 (0.5Mbs). I had to change my APN Settings from IPv6 to IPv4/IPv6 in order to even get any reception. When I use just IPv4 I get almost no up or down and when I use 6, I get no up and very slow down.
Does anyone else get this issue? Any thoughts on what I can do to improve things.
I got the Information on the cell tower from T-Mobile. I called them to see if there was a network issue and they said no issues were found. They knocked my SIM off the network and had me re-boot the phone but nothing helped. They logged a case and made a note that if the situation does not improve in the next few days that I can return my phone without a penalty.
Trouble is I have a Rooted phone and Knox is tripped so I don't think they will cover anything.
Thanks for your time,
-NJ
