Hey guys,
So I rooted my device a while back. I honestly don't remember what I did.
Could it be that I changed a modem / radio firmware or something of that sort? I'm asking because it feels to me as if my 3G connection is very unstable, and while my friends can watch youtube vids when we're driving mine will not connect.
What should i do if this is the case? Do I just need to replace it with another modem firmware?
Kh3 for the win

Mind elaborating on that?

Okay. That's a bit better.
But what's KH3? is that a Kernel?
I'm a noob, would really appreciate getting a more detailed explanation.
My baseband (which is modem isn't it?) is KE7 and my Kernel is KF3.
KH3 MODEM .

Cool. Just so I get this again:
I can update my modem, kernel and ROM each one individually without affecting anything?
Yes mostly interchangeable .

Hello gents.
I have a 1 dag old Galaxy S 2 and it's all good so far. I have a question. The phone switches from 3g to h+ automatically. The it seems that when I am not actively transferring data it stays on 3g then as soon as I start downloading or browsing or whatever it switches to h+. Is this a battery saving feature? I the reason I ask is that sometimes it seems to be in a loop switching from 3g to h+.
Thanks!!

I'm having the same issue, but only since I updated to KG3. Originally I rooted my phone with:
CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4
No issue with H+ / 3G.
I then installed Lite'ning Rom v4.2 XXKG3 and the issue started. My modem (PHONE) was then updated to KG3:
PDA: I9100XXKG3
PHONE: I9100XXKG3
CSC I9100XEUD1
I reverted to a stock XXKG3, same issue.
First thing I did when I rooted with CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4 was to backup everything. I reverted to my backup but obviously the modem remained the same:
PDA: I9100MUGKG2
PHONE: I9100XXKG3
CSC: I9100MBMCKG2
But I didn't have the issue anymore! So the modem update is not a fault here.
I did try to switch off fast dormancy, but it didn't change anything.
As you said, the phone goes to h+ when it starts transferring. My results with Speed Test remained the same, so I'm not to worried about it. I don't know how this impacts the battery. I can't really compare since now I use different cpu voltage.
Hmm. I will try downgrading to a KG2 kernel. Is this even doable / safe?
Thanks!!

That is totally normal I have that to, I think that is just for battery saving.

Yes it is, download the stock kernel here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
ZSKG2
OR
XXKG2
Then root with the correct ChainFire kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Please note that this wouldn't revert you to the exact software that was on the phone when you purchase it. The stock kernel from bell isn't available for download. Please note that I didn't try flashing to KG2 (only KG3) but I'm sure it's pretty safe.
Teslarage,
what are you running right now? You might already be to KG2... do *#1234# on your phone and past the info here
Thanks for the quick replies people!
I am running Cognition 1.31 with the ROM built in kernel which I believe is nepamphetamine (or something similar) along with the kg3 modem.
Would it be safe to downgrade the modem? I or should I try with a different kg2 kernel?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I tried with a different kernel, no cigar. Same issue...
Weird.
I'm pretty sure it's the modem. Any way to downgrade it? Flash the previous one with Odin? Which modem should I install?
I rooted my Bell SGS2 within hours of getting it, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't switching (3G / H / H+) before I rooted it and installed a custom ROM. It is now.
Some people here say the switching is normal, however I'm pretty sure this didn't occur on the stock Bell firmware. Maybe someone who hasn't rooted yet can confirm.
I've tried many roms (Villian, Cog, MIUI, DevNull) kernels (CF, Ninpo) and radios/modems (KG2, KG3) and the issue remains. I'm pretty sure the stock Bell firmware, specifically the MODEM, was customized and since it's not leaked we're SOL. My stock Bell f/w (modem and kernel) was MUGKG2.
I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to Samsungs, this is my first so I'm learning as I go here. But I've owned a few HTC's and never seen this issue. My Desire ALWAYS stayed on H with the same SIM card and on the Bell network.

You can flash any modem you like with ODIN but I assure you I've tried and the issue remains. I think we need the MUGKG2 one.
I flashed kernel oz_kg2 to root and unlock and I always have the H+ on. I don't think it should be anything to worry about since this technically is saving battery. Can you guys confirm that your phones aren't affected by the AOS bug on KG3?

Did a quick search for AOS and nothing much useful. Something about battery drain? Mine seems ok.
I wouldn't be concerned with the switching modes if I wasn't also getting intermittent connection problems. Sometimes it seems as if my data just disconnects. The data icon remains in the status bar but I can't surf, download market apps, check gmail, etc. Usually have to reboot.

GT-i9100M on Darky's KG3 Base Rom, Super Core Kernel, and KG3 Modem
Argh. I can't wait until somebody releases the stock modem / kernel / firmware for Bell. I'm going to flash back for sure. I find my WiFi performance pitiful on every ROM I've tried and the issue at hand in this thread is incredibely annoying
It's not the modem the problem, if a revert to my backup
PDA: I9100MUGKG2
CSC: I9100MBMCKG2
There is no switching with a KG3 modem
Maybe it's the CSC file since it's related to the country and carrier related settings? Any way to extract that data ?

I did peak at /system/CSCFiles.txt of the bell stock rom but didn't see anything striking... Only saw the bloatware from bell: UNO, nova, the gps app, selfserve app, etc.
To see if the CSC was at fault I tried upgrading to two different version of CSC but the update failed each time... not in odin but when the phone reboots for the first time...
Im also unsure if my gs2 is at fault or if its Bell's network. My d/u speeds are very inconsistant. Last night I was getting 5 down and 2 up and to day I tested with my bro who has a HTC incredible S on Telus. He got 8 down and 3 up while I was at 4 down and 1 up. What I found striking in that test is that telus uses Bell's network and that his phone is not 4g. I should be getting better speeds I think. What do you guys think.

Is it possible on the SGSII to get updated radio drivers and installing them, without flashing a new kernel, or other new stuff other then a new radio or modem driver?

Not entirely sure what you are asking, but i'll go with: Yes, check out this thread. Flash the modem by putting the file in the 'Phone' section of Odin, good luck.

Thanks just the answer I was looking for.... Does it cause compatibility issues? For example KG6 modem flashed on top of KG3 modem with KG3 firmware? Or are there no issues for the most part?

No issues. However a modem that works well for me might not work well for you. The best thing to do is usually flash the latest and if that is no good, flash the latest one before that etc. until you find one that you are happy with.
I just flashed KH3 Rom with KH3 modem but apparently my signal went down the drain. from 3-4bars of signal, it dropped to 0-1!
Im on 3 mobile running GT-I9100T
help?

Im running on full signal now (back to normal) when i flashed KF4. So we really should flash the stock modem always after flashing a new rom since KF4 is optimised for Vodafone/3 and Telstra too i guess?
But yeah if you just flashed a new rom, be sure to flash the stock KF4 modem right after.

That presumes that their are different KF4 modems then as opposed to one KF4 modem released worldwide .As you are presuming it has some local optimization .
jje
tried going back to kf4 still sometimes (depending where i am in the house) shows 2-3 bars but then says no network when try to ring or text
besides the drop in reception bars, do you have anyother problems because i would like to be able to get DSLR Controller, and i need the newer KG or KH to get that working
Hi
first of all I have to say I'm a noob to android
I tried to root my device and ended up with a brightness problem. Now the brightness is too much and it looks wired.
So as suggested in this forum I change my mind to flash and upgrade the firmware.
*#1234# code gives below results in my phone
PDA:I9100JPKH1
PHONE:I9100XXKG5
CSC:I9100JPKH1
So downloading the files and flashing with Odin will solve the problem?
(If not please tell me what should i do)..
And what will happen if i download and install
This version provided in this thread?
Firmware info
PDA:XXKG5
PHONE: XXKG5
Date: 27/07/2011
Android 2.3.4
Whole point is to get my phone updated to 2.3.4 since JPKH1 still has not received 2.3.4 update but 2.3.3.
So will any of the above things I'm planning to do end up with problems?
I at least want my phone back without this creepy brightness issue.
Please advice.
Thanks in advance.
Install KH3 from the stock rom thread. 2.3.4.

So if i install KH3 on my KH1, do i need to change the kernels?
Right now my phone has a issue with brightness after rooting, I think it's a result of using the wrong kernel.
What should be the procedure to update my phone and fix the brightness issue?
I'm in a mess. please help.

So is it safe to install KG5 Rom on my KH3 based phone right? cause i am thinking of flashing with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141201
Yes but you are going backwards in builds .
jje
Well i think i've done it.
First of all i installed kh3 firmware with Odin (from this thread). It solved my brightness problem but unrooted my phone. (Updating to 2.3.4 succeeded).
Then i rooted my device again using the Chainfire's insecure kernel which again caused to arise the brightness issue. (If you have any problem with superoneclick view this threads first post).
And then i did the same with the KH3 stock kernel except the thing with superoneclick(from this thread)to remove the yellow triangle on startupscreen and fix the brightness issue and i'm done.
Thanks a lot jje.
Whats is the latest? And how can you tell again?
Looking for the latest and possibly whatever came with the Offical ICS update also.

The modem / radio version will usually correlate with your ROM Base version, e.g. XWLP8 rom and **LP* Modem
Some modems are dotted around those forums (not on the OP page) so you may have to do some searching
Latest is the last numbered .
LP1 before LP2 LJ1 before LP1 .
Modems do not get released as frequently as roms so its normal for rom build LP8 to have modem LP2 and so on .
Latest modem is not best modem . Best modem is the one that works for you and your network .

And once again im confussed :L
I do mean baseband, The latest ICS baseband is?
I have no idea what im doing any longer, I really need to go back to a HTC Device,
I feel my network goes to sleep on the current modem? If I turn on the phone my 3G icon is grey instead of blue.

Modem = baseband. So latest is not really relevant... Find the one that works best for you.

Means it wasn't currently connected to the network. That's what it's supposed to be doing. It would suck a ton of battery if it was always connected.

I know what you mean, it's different to HTC land re: the radio. Newer doesn't always equal better here. My network just released ICS with a DVLP3 baseband, but I have radio-interface wakelocks with that so I went back to LPS.
I don't even know what im on any longer. LBP? is my baseband. I think.
