Please help me port CM to my device! (Micromax A70) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I wanna port CM to my Micromax A70...
Please tell me where to start and all that..
Any help is appreciated!
(Please don't post things like "It's impossible" etc etc if u don't wanna help )
If you need any info about this device please tell me!

pls read this thread very slowly and carefully. you should get a break through.
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667298
2. git.android.com / linux kernel.org has been hacked so you will not be getting a repo or a repo sync, if you go by current tutorials..
3. also it is better to go through dsixda's kitchen and see the innards of your rom before you jump into gingerbread.
4. I know that you are quite enthusiastic about porting cm7, but pls set up your adb properly.
lastly point number 1 is very important and point number 4 is most important.
also you did not reply whether the recovery key combination I told in techenclave booted you into recovery or not. pls let me know it then only we can proceed.
it is all a team work. so collaboration is an absolute requirement.
currently I am going through dsixda's kitchen.
seems playful god made the custom rom only from the above kitchen only..
All the best for early break through.

Sorry but it's really annoying at techenclave when it takes time for post to appear
I have already installed CWM recovery, hence I get CWM only..
I know cyanogen's thread and the kitchen..i'm into this since last 2 days...
but wtf is up with ADB, why isn't it working?

dont' know what issue with adb is. also we need to know how to get into download mode. it is something very similar to fastboot in htc. there is a utility called sut (software update utility) but we need adb first.
i'm using ubuntu 11.04. will try 10.10 for adb.
don't be angry if i tell you to be patient.
i've tried repo sync 7 times but failed. thats because i've limited bandwidth. bsnl plan 500 only free unlimited is 2am to 8am.
if we run into any bricking no body can help because
1. no adb
2. no download mode
cm7 might overwrite recovry partition so extreme caution is very essential.
any way we will do it. its just a matter of time. first let us get over the basics then it will all be fine

Hi Aditya,
I saw on androidforums that ADB is working on A70. You will have to install 91PC suite first. Will try soon and update you guyz.

hey guys i see you all are working very hard for making cm7 port for a70 but..... I jus wanted to know that which is the original manufacturer of micromax a70 i mean is it a rebrand of some other model .... Then we might be able to do something.... in some other thread i saw someone wrote that it is a rebrand if blade..

can u upload ur current rom
Can you guys dump ur current rom???

[Q] I want to root for 1st time ever, but I have a Mac

I am here today because I need help. I want to root for 1st time ever, but I have a Mac. I hear about all of the great things I can do with my Vibrant after rooting but I am scared of trying this without a PC. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Also lead me to the best roms. Thank you.
Well my first suggestion would be to get a PC
But seriously, you could always get a copy of XP somewhere (pretty easy to get for free), or a later Windows OS and dual-boot your system.
Or you could just dl Ryanza's lag fix from the market and root it that way.
You do not need a pc.
Download the file to your phone, put it on the root sdcard/ and go into stock recovery and flash it.
Afterwards, get rom manager and make a backup.
Flash a rom, bionix or eugene's
This is all in the general section sticky I made. EVERYTHING you need is there.

Take a look at this post. I would recommend you pull the latest version, su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip, from this thread instead of "SGH-959 Root Update.zip" from the 1st link.

I have taken your advice but my phone has only installed the Superuser app. I am scared that if I do anything else I will brick my phone. Is there a way to unroot it? I would like to try rooting again with the non PC version. Thank you
Download rom manager
Flash clockwork recovery
make a nandroid backup.
Now you have something you can always revert to.

Yes sir, that's exactly what you should have after successfully completing the process. To unroot from your device take a look here. View the Full thread (Page 1) to perform via adb. I don't see any reason you need to worry yourself about bricking. Unless your planning on testing kernels, ROMs, etc... If that's the case, make sure you read the entire thread before you make any decisions, and ask questions as it seems that most everyone here is willing to lend a hand.
search ryanza on market place. download the free version you can root and unroot from there simple instructions very easy to understand.
download rom manager (it auto installs superuser also) from market place also free download. that will allow you to make backups and restore should you encounter any problems.
also if your running OSX you can dual boot from Bootcamp windows, and if your running atleast a core 2 duo system you can dual boot windows 7/Vista 64bit.
A pc is needed for almost no modification when it comes to this phone.
I had to put effort into bricking my phone so you should be fine, just make sure if you have installed the OTA that any themes you install support the JI6 update. thats the only way i bricked my phone lol, and again that was a easy fix. Read read read so much to learn.
Thank you everyone for your help. I have succesfully rooted my phone. I think I will wait for the 2.2 OTA update since I hear that they are slowing coming around for the galaxy S phones. I want to try the bionix rom but I do not want to install it to soon and miss out on my chance to get the OTA update.

[Q] 2.2.1 - complications on downgrade and root.

Phone: LG P500h - ANDROID v 2.2.1 buildnumber FRG83.
Country: Brazil
Anyway, what I know is that i have to downgrade it to 2.2 in order to be able to root. I've looked through a bunch of tutorials on a bunch of websites but there are a few questions i have about the process that isn't answered anywhere i've looked.
Apparently downgrading requires me to get a stock ROM from LG, there is a topic here for that but it does not have the right ROM for my country, i tried a couple codes but they all got me 404.
Can I just flash any standard ROM from, US maybe, will it work?
And if yes, how do I flash it? Apparently you can do that by booting into recovery mode, but to get there you need it to be rooted which I can't do.
I've read about KDZ and downloaded that but... it crashes a lot in my PC (whenever i try the Read Device) it gives me error and closes the program (windows program not responding dialog).
I'm afraid it might crash in the middle of it if i try flashing and that would brick my device.
Is there a simple way to flash a new ROM? Is that the first thing I have to do in order to get a custom ROM say Ubuntdroid? It says I need a new recovery... but for that I need to downgrade first? It's a lot to do... and I don't really get the order in which I should do it all in...
Can somebody post me a little "do this, then do that, then finally do that" so that I can understand it all finally?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for long post, was trying to be as informative as possible.
This shows what happens when I try reading the phone on KDZ... also a little part showing that I got my device to be recognized by windows...
also disabled the LGE modem on device manager, read that if I don't it'll get bricked.
Well it won't let me link the image so... just paste the name together.
www
novasite.com.br
/1.jpg
1. Find a suitable v2.2 stock ROM for flashing (link)
2. Use KDZ to flash it (I am not aware of another tool capable of doing that). Try doing that on a PC running Windows XP (important - that's where you're stuck now and I guess you're using Windows 7).
3. Root your phone - search for "z4root" on Market, install it.
4. Install Custom recovery, which will replace your current (stock) recovery mode (link - you may need to create an account on another forum in order to download).
5. Using Custom recovery you can now install any custom ROM and create nandroid backups to restore your phone to a certain (working) state.
You will have to use KDZ again if you ever want to flash a stock ROM, also losing the custom recovery. But you will have no reason to do that, except if you need to take your phone to some warranty repairs.
Good luck!
NEW PROBLEM: About step 1... i finally found a way to get my country's rom, but... it's.. the same thats on my device right now, it says V10a_02 and thats the same on my phone (the kdz read phone tells me that) so... won't I just be flashing the same 2.2.1 again?
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/swdata/WEBSW/LGP500H/ABRABK/V10A_02/V10A_02.kdz <---- the rom the topic tells me to get.
How do I know what version of android is in that rom? and if i can't, can you link me to a rom that does?
I found one from another country that the guy said is 2.2... but... will it work if i flash that one? does it HAVE to be for my country? also my model is p500h (the h) is it different from the p500 (different as in flashing p500 without h roms on it will kill it?)
As for flashing it...
I think maybe a computer with win xp will do the trick for kdz.
i've found this post today:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944881
is it better to use that than kdz? theres no replies on topic saying "hey it worked" so i'm a little worried, but apart from a few errors it seems to work on my win 7....
i guess the reply would be "i only know kdz, do it with kdz" but i thought i might ask...
Indeed, I have not tried that method and therefore I can't recommend it. At least KDZ is successfully tested. If you are patient enough to wait for some replies either here or in that topic, you may find out if it works. I would recommend it only if you have no other choice, like if you're unable to try KDZ on an XP machine.
In the mean time, I remembered that a newer version of Custom recovery is available (v1.2) - here. But you still need to download a file and read the tutorial from that other forum I mentioned in the previous post.
what about the first part of the post? i think i might have added that after you replied i don't know... asking about the rom i found if it isn't the same i have on my phone. and asking if i can just add another country's one...

First backup your data, then download a factory ROM, it doesn't matter which version u download, what matters is the version. Make sure that it's 2.2 and not 2.2.1 or 2.2.2. Follow all the below steps without skippin any, no matter how simple or stupid they are.
Link for shipped ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865479
Now download KDZ updater and uncompress it
http://www.4shared.com/file/UleS4dP3/KDZ_FW_UPD_EN.html
Install msxml.msi from the uncompressed directory
Charge your battery to almost full state (I'm not sure, but it can be reason if phone doesn't start)
Turn phone off somehow (remove battery etc.)
Install drivers properly
Get rid of all usb drivers like Nokia, microsoft visual ++ run time environments
Install the LG drivers by selecting the update manager from the lg site
Disable LGE Virtual Modem. In your Windows operating system, go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Modems > Right click on LGE Virtual Modem and click Disable.
Press and keep pressed "Volume up"+"Return" and connect USB cable to phone
Yellow screen with text emergency mode should appeared
Shake the handset (I know, it sounds ... strange, but it helps for ones, so... why don't try it?) UPDATE: Read some quotes on bottom.
Run KDZ_FW_UPD.exe (Has administrator).
Select Type : 3GQCT (I have one report that CDMA mod works too)
Select PhoneMode : DIAG (in case of fail try EMERGENCY, and as last chance use CS_EMERGENCY)
I Recommend do not switch phone off. There was some people, which done it and after they was not be able to turn it on again. If flashing failed, just select some another mode and try it again, again, try shake/connect disconnect, again, again....
In KDZ file : Choose the ROM file you downloaded in the first step
Press Launch software update
Shake the handset (I know, it sounds ... strange, but it helps for ones, so... why don't try it?) UPDATE: Read some quotes on bottom.
Now Root it via Z4root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
Then install custom recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844483
Then download n flash any ROM of your choice, I wud sugget install Void or LOL.
Edit :- By the time I replied, many have already replied. Anyways you can check my reply too :-D
Mithun.
"it doesn't matter which version u download, what matters is the version."
does that mean it doesn't matter what country or operator the rom is for, as long as it is android version 2.2?
i have one from portugal (not my country) and that one is made for P500 mine is P500H... if that makes a difference i don't know, but i do know that rom is android 2.2. can i flash that one?
i also have one that i got from that topic following the instructions of putting my serial number, it linked me to a rom V10A_02... on KDZ when i try to read my device it says i have V10A_02 too. isn't that the same one i have now? with android 2.2.1? if it is it's very pointless to flash the same rom already in it.
any way to check?
because that is my last doubt ;p

As far as my knowledge goes, the LG P500h you have is the same phone as the P500, only branded for Telus. The hardware should be identical, therefore you may use any ROM designed for the P500 family.
The only thing you may miss if you install a ROM not customized for a Brasil (or South America) network operator is the internet acces point name, thus rendering your phone unable to acces the internet trough its data service connection, but only trough WiFi. Nevertheless, the phone's APN can be configured manually, all you need are the correct settings from your mobile operator and you're good to go.
Ok since you guys told me i can go ahead and flash any country ROM i just did and now my device burst into flames and then the flames consumed my apartment.
ok, not. it worked too well actually, i did the kdz procedure on my win 7 anyway, despite the errors when reading device info, and it took like, 1 minute, rebooted, took like 2 minutes on the android screen then it came back, with all my data still there... i thought it didn't do anything but... its now version 2.2
i tried z4root, worked ... got the superuser app and.... i'm happy ^^ thaaaanks!
anyway about the custom recovery thing..
i'm going to install the one in that post you gave me...
but i read something about the best one being clockwork something...
shouldn't i go ahead and install that one?
or can i do everything i need with this one you guys linked?

Glad that it worked Install the Amon_RA's recovery!!! Many ROM's for OO won't support clock work I suppose. Amon RA's recovery is neat, I've been using that from the time I had an HTC tattoo.

You can do anything you need with ThunderG. Now that version 1.2 supports backup and restore of ext4 partitons (a feature you don't need if you don't plan on installing a custom ROM... but you will, eventually ), it is complete.
Moreover, in ClockworkMod's first topic says: "This recovery will not allow you to flash every ZIP file". ThunderG does, if you choose to allow flashing of unsigned zip files. Sometimes this is useful.
Peeeeeerfect
Recovery installed, LOL ROM installed, all fast smooth and error-free.
no more screen touch lag, it's soooooo much faster now, overclocked, i have yet to test my emulators but i can only guess they're gonna be at least 150% better lol.
thank you all very much for taking the time to help me ^^
ONE LAST QUESTION: I PLAN ON BUYING A NEW SD CARD, JUST PLUG IT IN AND IT'LL FORMAT THEN CREATE THE NEEDED FILES THEN I INSTALL STUFF BACK ON IT, SIMPLE AS THAT?
Simple as that =D
Although there are some criteria with the sd card or you'll get unmounting problems.
Use a class 4 or higher card
format with fat32
I've never officially tried this method but its apparently supposed to help
allocation unit size: 64kb when you're formatting

lg l9 p769 - droid 4.0.4 - i'm lost, could use help, linux user

i have been seeing a lot of threads about rooting this phone, but, they all have windows scripts, even the thread that is said to have a runme.sh does not have it in any of the links that i unzipped - only a runme.bat, but yet, people keep mentioning a runme.sh in it... also, i really don't see any one lying out the steps for doing this with linux.
i'm a noob, and dont really know much about this stuff, but i've done this ONCE before with a galxy exhibit, but it was very easy, i just copied a file to the phone (stock rom?), rebooted into recovery, told it to recover from that file, and i was done.
i have no idea how to do it with my new phone, and so i'm wondering:
1: where can i find the files i need to do this with linux - i just want root, nothing special
2: where can i find the steps necessary to do it - in the easiest manner possible?
3: it says i have droid 4.0.4, ICS, but every one who talks about lg l9 p769 says its JB, so, thats a bit odd...
any help is appreciated.

Your phone is running ICS 4.0, that is the version which it shipped with. Pretty much everyone on here has upgraded to JB either with software update on the phone or they have manually updated with the offline KDZ flash method.
I dont have any experience in linux so I cant help. I hope you can get your phone rooted!

i just started to restart my phone into recovery mode to see if i could put cyenogenmod on it without having to root it first, and it's saying "software upgrade ... please wait while upgrading...", so, i guess it's upgrading to JB right now... i'll see shortly.
but even if it does upgrade to JB, i still wouldn't know how to do it on linux. i figured there would just be some files to download, and a sequence of adb commands that i could type into bash, but, i'm kinda lost. i guess i'll wait and see if it upgrades to JB before asking more questions.
thanks.

well, i tried that "LGpwn" and it didn't work, as well as a fake lg-recovery app. i figured out that i've got a "10g" phone (P769 V10G ICS). i'm not sure what the next step is. some one mentioned downgrading to JB... is there some where you can point me to for that???
i've GOT to get this t-mobile junk off my damned phone... i've even TRIED to install cyenogenmod, but i can't figure out how to get my phone to go into recovery mode (NOT factory rest) - i've tried volup+power+home and volup+power, and neither seem to be working.
Setup a sandbox, windows xp. LG uses windows, no other way to root as of right now for the t-mobile version.

yeah, it's starting to look like i'm gonna have to try this with a virtual machine, or, pay some one else to do it, or, go get my money back and downgrade to a samsung galaxy exihibit (not sure if the new model of that phone is just as easy as the exhibit 4g, but, it's screen is about an inch smaller than the lg, and they're all 3 the same price, so i'd rather keep the lg).
just out of curiosity, how do you get this phone to boot into recovery mode? you don't have to root it for that, or have windows, right? you just hit the right keys on the phone, right? i couldn't get it to work, but, maybe i was doing it wrong. and, if you can go into recovery, does it have to be rooted to use a cyenogenmod image, or will it not really know the difference?
thanks again. i'm sure this thread may help other noobs as well.

If you are rooted on stock T-Mobile 10e or 10g ROM and have the CWM installed from this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095825 follow my instructions.
Place one of these CWM ROM images on your SD-Card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136204
Place this JB radio firmware from T-Mobile 20d ROM on your SD-Card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256350
Power off the device.
After power on the back/menu capacitive buttons will flash repetedly. Press Volume down while the lights are flashing and the phone should go into recovery.
Flash the ROM first.
Flash the radio second.
Reboot.
***Notes***
1.) 20d is the latest T-Mobile, 21b is the latest Wind Mobile. Both work.
2.) 21b is lighter/faster but has no wifi-calling.
3.) 21b will require you to manually enter your APN settings for cellular data and MMS. Be sure to write down your APN settings before flashing this ROM.
4.) Some users say battery life sucks on JB. I notice that 21b is better on battery life than 20d.
Option #2.
In Linux install a Windows VM and follow the standard instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173465
Use KVM with a GUI or even easier use VirtualBox.
I'm a die hard linux geek too. I even run linux at work while all of our msp software was written for windows. You are better off just running an old copy of xp inside virtualbox trust me its just easier that way. You can use adb if you like (its the same thing the windows users use in their batch files and just rewrite the bash script, but you will save yourself lots of headaches just using virtualbox. -- my .02

i'm not exactly sure what the end result of your instructions are, as i assumed it was to BE rooted, but the first line of your post says "if you are rooted ...", so, i'm guessing you're telling us how to ... unlock the boot loader?
by the way, that reminds me, i still haven't come across any posts on this site that tell noobs:
# what's the unlocked boot loader FOR - why do you need this - what does it do?
# what's the difference between unlocked boot loaders and being rooted?
# do you have to unlock the bootloader to get root access?
all some one like ME needs, is root access, so that i can edit the /etc/hosts file and test mobile compatibility of web apps on the development server before making them live - and to remove t-mobile damned bloat-ware. i hope this helps others who are trying to understand the basic concepts of getting control over the phone they paid money for.
thanks again. now to find a winxp image to load into a virtual machine...
My bad. I should have read through your original question all the way before posting. I see that you are not rooted.
If you are on 10e ROM you can root in Linux:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1990705
It will require rewriting the batch script as a Linux shell script. It is possible but nobody has done it yet.
If you are on 10g you will need Windows. I have also answered your questions below.

It allows you to boot an un-signed kernel. You can boot custom ROMs basically.
# what's the difference between unlocked boot loaders and being rooted?
Root allows you to `su -` to the root user and own the whole system.
# do you have to unlock the bootloader to get root access?
No.

yeah, the one t-mobile is selling now is a v10g - so, it's time to play with virtual machine, and hope that usb-access is passed through from ubuntu to the VM.
thanks for answering the other questions. i think this essentially sets things straight.

Welcome!
I know that a long time ago when I ran VirtualBox in Ubuntu there was something I had to do to allow USB access to the VM.
Here are the current instructions directly from Ubuntu:

Good luck.
hey, i've got 1 more quick question: is there a way to simply load a pre-rooted ROM onto it, like i did with my samsung? where you put it onto the device, the go into recovery mode and choose the pre-rooted ROM? i haven't seen any mention of that, so i'm not sure if that's an option...
also, how the hell do you make this boot into recovery mode? i still haven't been able to get it to do that?
thanks \m/ (>_<) \m/

Yes you can flash a pre-rooted image. They are available. Use the search?
I posted instructions on the first page showing how to boot recovery.
that's great news - that's all i really needed - i didn't see them before, at least, not conspicuously, but i'll search around again.
and, i must have some how missed your instructions, i'll look again.
thanks!

those steps assume i have CWM installed, and i don't. i looked at installing CWM, and it doesn't have an official recovery app for the p769, and when i went to look at that thread you linked to, it says you must be rooted already. this is the aggravating part of us ignorant people dealing with people who know many things: it appears to us that you have to do some thing that requires that it is already done before you can do it. it doesn't make any sense - just a bunch of circualar requirements, with no beginning.
so, let me ask this a different way: how do i reboot into recovery mode, on a STOCK LG P769 v10g? the lights do not flash, and i'm assuming that is a CWM feature - but CWM is not installed - this is COMPLETELY STOCK - fresh out of the box. so, what do you press, when turning it on, to make it go into recovery mode, so that you can recover from a pre-rooted rom (which i am still looking for)?
i just want to "recover" to a pre-rooted rom, that's it, so that i can delete bloatware and edit the /etc/hosts file (for web app testing). this thread says you cant do this for LG phones http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174767 - i got the same result the last guy got . trying to borrow a windows computer now...
also, does any one know if it is safe to put a jelly bean rom onto a device that was using ice cream sandwich? is there a difference between the versions that would brick the device? is it not recommended, or is it highly recommended?
thanks again. sorry for all the confusion.
you know, as a side note: it may help more noobs understand this stuff if there was a sort of simplified glossary, perhaps as an official site thread, for the orientation of noobs, that would give an outline of the basic concepts, AND their order of operation. exmaple: "rooting is when you... bootloader unlocking is when you... CWM is for people who want to... you MUST do A before you can do B and then you can optionally do C if so desired...". that would help them understand where to START, then, where to GO next.
well, borrowed a windows computer and i got it rooted, but, i found out a few things about this exact model: it has no "boot to recovery" option, by default - it's locked down pretty good. you can not use any of the other root methods on this model, and you can not do it from linux (f*ck me).
so, that long-winded fake-software-update-while-switched-out-a-hex-edited-binary-file is the ONLY way for this exact model, it seems...
but, at least i can confirm that this exact model CAN be rooted at all
now to remove alllllllll the bloatware... and look into this CWM more and learn more about what is actually IS and WHY so many people install/use/flash it...
hey, does any one know if cyenogenmod ever got themselve's an "app/marketplace"??? that was one of the draw-backs to installing it, last i checked.
thanks @everyone for your help.

I've decided to help you out This page will give you some more info on the P769 and several kdz (roms) for the P769
The fastest way to root is to flash the V21B kdz (this is the Jelly Bean version for Canada) using this guide, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36351786
The reason why you want this rom is because it has a vulnerability that is easy to exploit with Jcase apk
Once your followed everything (and rooted), install Super Su and Busybox
Next install artas182x second init CWM (in case you can't find it on his page, the link is here )
Note: you will see blinking led lights when you see the LG logo (booting up) appear after a couple of seconds. To enter the CWM press the vol (-) when the lights start flashing.
After you installed Artas182x CWM you can recover from someones clockworkmod backup.
following info from Cmahendra's thread
Note: only restore CWM backups from P769 versions or MS769!!!!
Or check out the V10B (MetroPCS "JellyBean") CWM backup
Now the only 2 reasons to unlock the bootloader are:
1. Install a safer and better CWM
The reason why is because Artas182x CWM is a second init (bootstrap), so if you mess around with a busybox apk and something goes wrong or you remove a file that is required (for CWM), it will stop operating. You will have to reflash the kdz or fix what you changed to get it working again.) I've had this problem several times while messing around with different busybox apps and etc.
2. Custom roms
(which you stated you are not looking for) not worth talking about right now.
Answer to questions
The only pre rooted roms are clockworkmod backups, lol
The default recovery is useless to us (unless you feel like solving the problem)
Flashing back and forth (ice to jelly) comes with risk, the program used on Windows to flash is buggy at times. The best way (in my opinion) is to flash only when really required and mostly restore from clockwormod backups. The device is actually hard to hard brick, but it will require at lot more knowledge to get your device running again.

Ice? Jelly?
i'm still on ICS for the moment. still trying to understand what i need to do next. re-reading your post for the 2nd time, and all the threads it references. making sure i don't screw any thing up. thinking about upgrading to JB, and trying this CWM. and looking into this "cyanogenmod" some more, to understand why i never see any one on this site mention it, and what all these "other roms" are about. lmao, like i said, i'm way new to this . it's a lot to take in, even for a web developer .

COMPLETE guide to BRICK your Truesmart! --{SOLVED!! Unbricked!!}

[update 2] I just summarized a way to backup and restore (all based on other great DEV's work, just put in one place) your TS before your play with your TS here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52820278#post52820278
Go check it if you plan to root your TS!
[update] With the help of cheahcl, I got the latest F/W for 4th List 1/8/2100. With the MTK SP_Flash_Tool, I was able to upload a corrected F/W for my TS and everything goes back to normal!
Thanks for cheahcl for his dump and Lokifish Marz for his All in one tools! You guys really saved my day! (and my TS).
A Quick summary: Do NOT use any method on XDA yet to root or change TWRP recovery! It seems the TS of 4th list is different in some way than the ones before which render most of stuffs here invalid. However, fear not to play around since now we have a way to go back to stock!
In my experience, I found that it's really difficult to truly brick a MTK based system. The system will just reject flashing at slightest sign that a F/W is not compatible. The only cache is you need to have the "correct" F/W specifically for your TS!
In my observation, OMate made changes between each delivery. For Example, the 4th list of 1/8/2100 is different in (At least F/W configuration) of the 3rd or earlier 1/8/2100.
------------------------below is my original story of what I tried and failed--------------------------
Just got mine (1/8/2100) 5 hrs ago! I am on the 4th list. The delivery in FAST!
The watch starts normally. I played with it for a while, than decided to root it, install TWRP and apply the security hack made by +Lokifish Marz
Now I have a brick! Just after 30 min I receive the watch!
<<Can anyone help me here?>>
First of all, in respecting to all great DEVs, I have NO intention to blame anyone else but myself. (I did this to my own watch!)
Second, I have been rooting Android since Cupcake day, so I am not a Noob... (or so I think...) I am very familiar with ADB/fastboot... and use almost daily.
So here is the guide to brick. If Anyone have any idea please help me out!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st, I tried to use this tool to root+TWRP+scurity patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2713183&page=2 knowing it's NOT tested against 1/8/2100. I just tried anyway... The script went with a lot of errors, it seems the script cannot locate correct files but still push the security patched files into the /system/app (and other places).
I turn on the watch, but it just stuck at boot logo (the orange "Truesmart" logo without animation)
Also, the Recovery is still stock, TWRP is no where to be seen.
Since ADB still works, I adb reboot couple times, pull the battery, let the watch run for 2hrs, etc... Nothing works. The watch just stuck at the boot logo.
Than I follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2641261 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2641261 with Stock firmware downloaded from http://d-h.st/users/Lokifish Marz/?fld_id=30814#files (Omate_1-8_2100_TrueSmart_20140328.zip)
I installed all drivers, restarts my Win 7 (x86) pc (several times), and after several attempts the Flashtool just flash in the Firmware.
The Tools flash with a green Check mark, indicating everything is ok!
However the watch just become a brick after this....
Than this completed the brick process! Now the watch won't even turn on, when I try to use Flash tool again, it always say S_FT_ENABLE_DRAM_FAIL. Google this and you find it's due to flashing wrong F/W, but I don't know where went wrong!
Anyone else have same problem or it's just me? Anyone have solution?
You said everything...
You made mistake but that shouldn't be problem.
You soft brick it using wrong recovery image and root tool but as you said, you had adb and fastboot on - so if you know what are you doing and I see you know (except of that pary of flashing something that's not for your device .) you should be able to flash stock firmware back.
If you can flash another firmware, try with other firmware...
Don't know what else to say....
Omate build piece of sh*t and we'll all have problems with it...
It's very hard to differentiate devices.
All of them has same nr on mother boards and, as I said, we will all have problems with Omate and their TrueSh*t...

Ha! Very true! I think you are right! I believe Omate have many segmentation on their HW/SW, even with same model number.... A lot of things changes between versions which makes the "factory image" not compatible....
Anyone has the latest (4th list) 1/8/2100 TS who could dump their whole image for me would be helpful...
I would like to help you but mine is 2nd list and it's still on customs office...
Omate shipment experts, you just gotta love them....

Not sure what to tell you on this. A board revision change is possible as the Omate_1-8_2100_TrueSmart_20140328.zip was from a 1/8 2100. I can't even test stuff anymore as I gave one to a tech student that's studying network and system security and the other four were stripped down, reworked into data gathering modules and then donated to near space projects.

Thanks Lokifish for your comment... Is there anyway to get a latest F/W? If you know anyone I could contact, please PM me... Thanks!
Anyone have yet received a 1/8/2100 on 4th list could PM me a Factory F/W dump?
I tried another XP PC with all steps checked and rechecked but still... No luck...
Teach me how to do a dump and I'll dump it for you. I was also looking how to backup my stock firmware before playing around, seeing as no one has our version of firmware uploaded for restore yet.
Also received mine yesterday and firmware version is 20140513, pretty damn recent.
You guys are going to have to help each other out on this one. I've already deleted 90% of any and all Android dev stuff from my personal file server and computer. This includes tools, guides and work going as far back as the original HTC Evo.

Thanks a lot! First of all, Currently don't do anything posted on XDA yet since most of them will not work with this version of TS... (This is where I am now...)
First of all, please get all necessary tools directly from this post "All Tools" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2734687 (Do NOT download or install any other things there!)
Follow those steps: (modified from link above)
1. Download "All Tools"
2. Install Universal ADB Drivers (included in All Tools) <--If you already have ADB up and running, it's not necessarily, then.
3. Enable USB Debugging on watch
4. Launch MTKDroid Tools
5. Connect watch to PC
6. Please follow the instruction from here: http://www.chinaphonearena.com/foru...up-MTK6592-MTK6589-MTK6577-and-all-MTK-Phones
   a. Skip everything above and just starts from "B) Open ADB prompt to begin communication with the phone" .
   b. Don't worry about the recovery thing... TS comes with a recovery which is not locked and you can do everything this article said with only stock recovery. (also no busy box is needed, nor su since TS run everything in root!)
   c. You could also refer to the video guide below for details
7. it's okay to just provide the file you got after finishing the step "C) Read back the ROM with MTK Droid Tools" I should be able to do the Step D) and after myself.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Ive managed to get my brand new watch stuck in a bootloop after using framaRoot to root it. (I know, I know)
Now, I am able to boot into recovery mode or factory, and tried a factory reset. No luck, so i'm pretty sure the issue is in the /system partition.
Does anyone know if there are zip files somewhere that i can flash from recovery, to restore the system partition?

The TS (or any MTK based system) does not use the usually "recovery backup/restore" way we familiar of, instead it goes the "special tool on PC backup/restore" method. You need ask people who receive their watch in around the same time as yours with same configuration to backup their watch FW with MTK tools than restore with said FW.
Basically what I had done in this thread!
Please follow my another guild to see how to do this...

HEY! It worked
I'm back at a functional Truesmart
Thank you soo much
And in case three smiley's aren't enough:
Also, quick note for other people bricking their phone, my issue (after I bricked it again), was that I used an app to change the density property, which broke the boot of the watch.
The app that broke my watch was: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.birdapi.android.dpi

Rooting a Dell Venue 8 3830

This is a thread on how i rooted my device. I recently bought a refurb of this nice little tablet and navigated these threads. While the end result was what i wanted, a rooted device running an unsecured bootloader and the open source release was achieved. I did manage to brick myself in the process and come back from the ashes. So below are the steps and some links to what worked for me and will possibly work for you given youre runing the 3830 release with WIFI and no 3G.
NOTE: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU TURN YOUR TABLET INTO A DOORSTOP, YOU ASSUME ALL RISK IF YOU CHOOSE TO PROCEED.
1. Visit opensource.dell.com, browse the repository for the Dell Venue 8. DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING, because why not.
2. go here, read everything and download the necessary packages for your system. Get your drivers installed, etc etc
3. Open the dell guide from Step 1 and follow it for installing the unlocked bootloader and unlocked OS onto your tablet. Reboot, make sure you dont have a paperweight. If you do, keep reading the dell guide as it has a nice unbricking section to follow
4. Once you are up and running kick off mybatch from Step 2 again and this time use the option to root your device. Let it works its magic as described in the thread.
5. Reboot for good measure
6. Kick back and you should now have root access.
7. Wanna install CWM dont you? yes you do so go here follow Vampirefos nice guide and download the CWM image and flash it. Test it and you should be good to go
Notes: My tablet shipped with Stock 4.2.2 JBS so if you have the same it should keep you from avoiding the few pitfalls there are
Dell has provided the links and documentation on compiling the kernel and getting the AOKP sources in their guide as well. If i get some free time or if anyone is so inclined to continue where other devs have left off we may be able to get rid of the stock OS in favor of a lighter one.
Hello, great guide I just got this tablet so I will be using it shortly. I am assuming that step 3 will wipe the device, correct? Also is the Dell unlocked OS Kitkat 4.4.2? Or would you later use CWM to flash a 4.4.2 ROM? I don't see many ROMs available for this tablet which I'm assuming is due to the Intel processor. I'm fine with AOSP and Xposed Framework as that can add nice features to any ROM.
Hello all, this is the tab I have and I have been hoping to find a way to root it without a PC. I am wondering how big a risk it would be to flash the dev edition file without a PC handy? According to these instructions step one is making sure adb see's your tab but then you unplug it and do not need a PC for the rest of the process (if you just unzip the file to sd card on tablet itself) So what's the purpose of making sure adb see's it? Is it REQUIRED to flash dev file or is it just to repair a soft brick for example? Any reason I can't skip this step and just unzip the package and flash the file?

Step 3 may or may not wipe your data settings, i had a blank JB install and just rooted out of the box so cant say yes or no on that one. No not many ROMS at all. Great little tablet though i have had great battery life and its been pretty stable on the dev edition. only had one random reboot.
Geeker -> you could technically get away with doing it without a PC but then again i always like to have it connected in case anything goes wrong. I would highly reccommend making sure you can connect with ADB so if anything goes sidways after rooting and flashing you can at least get into fastboot and flash the jb image from the mybatch install instructions.

Ok cool, thanks for the info! I have a backup tablet is why I am considering the risk. Now does this mean that if something did go wrong with flashing the dev image that I could possibly be perma-bricked if adb will not connect? Or would I still be able to find a PC, install relavent drivers and get things going again? Also I don't think I have seen confirmation anywhere if it is OK to use dev edition if you are upgraded to 4.4.2 or not, anyone know for sure? Instructions doesn't say anything about being upgraded or not.
Im always of the opinion i want to connect and make sure i can before i start tinkering with my droids. technically you could even connect during a softbrick following the instructions but it would just be a little more work. I cant say if the downgrade will have any issues as i started at JB. As long as the bootloader is not upgraded and is the same version as JB then it should downgrade as long as you are rooted.

Well, trying to get root so I am not rooted now if that is what you mean. As far as the bootloader it is not something I have manually upgraded but IDK if the OTA updates would change that or not. OTA upgrade out of the box to 4.4.2 is all that has been done to it. Knowing it can still be saved im the event something DID go wrong with the flash makes me wanna go ahead and attempt it, I guess my only concern now is with the dev package downgrading the tab. I reckon I should try to find out if anyone else on 4.4.2 successfully did the dev edition flash without any other tricks.

Ok, I just seen the rest of the instructions AFTER the part explaining how to fix brick. Guess I should have read farther but I was under the impression simply flashing "venue8_version-1.22-ota-signed_full_rooted.zip" would give me a rooted tablet, so this is not the case huh? I would still have to unlock the bootloader and flash the other images from a pc?
