I've somehow lost the ability to send SMS's on my SGS II. Likely during one of my recent ROM swaps. I've tried entering the SMSC when dialing *#*#4636#*#* but it doesn't seem to accept it ... when I do refresh it shows up as "00". I'm quite sure that's the reason my SMS's are failing - it somehow doesn't have the SMS gateway number for my carrier.
I've tried doing full wipe, installing other ROMS, changed the radio, flash the CSC...nothing seems to work.
I'm travelling this week and will be swapping SIM's, I (sort of) hope that will force it to the SMSC for my prepaid carrier and that when I get home it will put in the local SMSC...but I'm probably dreaming.
Any ideas?
When I had that problem I did go messaging then to options and put my carrier message code there.

Awesome! That did it. Can't believe it was so easy after all that (for some reason no one has posted this fix elsewhere, because of course I did a ton of Google Searching). Thanks again!!!
I am having the same problem now, but with Galaxy I. I go to the hidden menu and I can't input the smsc myself. It shows up automatically as "00" and I can't change it.
When you mentioned, go to messaging and then options, you meant settings? I tried that but I don't see any option where I can insert the smsc number myself...
anyone who could help with this?
can't send galaxy I
I have a friend with a galaxy S version 1 that can't send texts, but can receive them anyone have some direction in which to go, I will give you a cookie
thanks
Steve
I just had this problem and did tons of searching and couldn't find the answer. I swear this should come up more. Anyway here's how I fixed it:
1. Make sure your radios are the latest
2. Check your SMSC number (this is what fixed it for me, link below)
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/SMSC_Updates
is a good guide on configuring SMSC numbers (note that the AT&T number in the example is incorrect: it's missing a 9 as the third character)
Let me know if that helps!

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 which i am having a really irritating SMs problem with.
My dad lives in Cyprus, when he sends me an SMS i can not reply, when i try it just says 'sending' then 'failed' . In order to get the text SMS to send to him i have to delete the message thread, then start a new message and it will send. Now if he then replies, i will need to delete the message thread again in order to be able to send him a new message.
I do not have this issue with any other contacts that i am aware. The only difference with my dad is that he lives abroad in Cyprus, and all my other contacts are here in the UK. Has anyone else had this issue? Know what causes it? I have deleted and recreated the contact but still the same.
Many thanks.
Do you have your dad's number stored in contacts with country code or not ? I was on the verge of smashing my phone when i was abroad, trying to call persons in my native country and i couldn't because i didn't have numbers stored with country code. Maybe that's your issue too
I think the problem is related to what SMS server your dad is using, I had same issue with my X-girls phone, no one could direct reply to SMS...
Hi, thanks for the replies.
Sp1tfire, i have changed the number configuration around several times, all with no success.
Fritz, this sounds plausible, however this would surely affect other phones replying? I don't have this issue when using my iphone 4 so it only happens from the Galaxy2 at the minute. I will try and use a colleagues Android phone to text him and test it.
Somehow you, or TSP (Telephone Service provider), have inserted a sms mail server address that is not valid.
here in my country, there has been scams, "cheaper SMS, enter this server setting" and stuff like that, so there is a setting on you phone that is wrong.

Can't be cause of settings, if he can actually send new sms to that number, but he can't reply from the received sms. His settings are correct as long as he can send sms. Must be something else. Are you using default sms app or a third party software ?

I am using the stock SMS app. I have just wiped the phone and installed the KF2 firmware. Going to see if that helps.
Sp1tfire, thats right, i can only reply to him when i delete the existing thread. I can however send new SMS to him no problem, so long as the thread is deleted before hand. Very frustrating as i lose the history every time.
Update, exactly the same on KF2 Firmware.
Ok, so i tried with a friends HTC desire and he has the same issue. also found my brother who has an iphone 3gs is unable to reply to my Dads number. So at least know its no longer just my phone and that it must be something the other end. Many thanks for the help.
Same problem here
When I reply to my girl it says: failed, when i delete the whole thread it goes.
It's only when I text her, all the other contact go fine
On my old sgs I had it to, but only on stock, when I was on CM7 it was OK.
Cant imagine that its something with the other phone i'm sending it to though

I remember in all the previous phones I've had, there's been a setting in the SMSC Settings allowing the user to specify whether or not to "Reply using the same SMSC" (or something along those lines).
If the option is ticked, the phone attempts to reply to the message through the SMSC that the text originally came from (rather than the one set in your handset).
The cause of the error may be because the SMSC overseas does not recognise your phone/SIM and therefore won't allow the replying message to go through.
And perhaps this may explain why deleting the whole thread and restarting a brand new message works - that is, the new message will go through the SMSC that is set in your phone for your own network.
Although, I've had a look through the settings in my SGS2 and can't seem to find that setting anywhere... (doesnt mean it's not there - it could just be that I don't know my phone well enough because I've only had it for a few days ).
I think your dad's SMS configuration settings is forcing you (or any other person he is sending an SMS to) to reply through his operators message centre
Ask him to check his sms settings and disable any such message centre settings from his side. This should solve the problem.

Sorry if this has been answered before but I can't find the answer.
I got my gsm razr today and I love it but I can't send a text message, I can receive texts and surf the Web. My phone us showing 4 bars of hspa. I can even tether, but no sending sms. My phone says error code 500.
Only thing I found on google said restart it and SMS will be.fixed but that didn't work.
the phone is rooted on 2.3.5 if that matters.
has anyone had this problem and how can I fix it?
Thanks

I have the same problem. The only way I can get mine to work is to put a SIM from another account in my phone. Enter *#*#4636#*#* and go to Phone Information. Refresh the SMSC. It will populate with the correct information. At this point, I can send texts from the phone. Put in the original SIM (do not reboot phone) and then you should be able to send SMS from your number.
The only problem is that the SMSC number does not stay through reboots. I have to do this process every time I reboot.
Does anyone know how to get this number to stick?
I don't have the same problem however I have noticed that GOSMS Pro from the market does allow a Customized SMSC setting in the Send Settings tab. Perhaps you can try that out and see if it fixes the issue?
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried both but neither work. I really like this phone but not having text us killing me. Someone please help

Hi,
I recently helped a colleague purchase a Galaxy SIII phone here in China, Guangzhou and made sure I checked the phone over completely before I purchased it.
I've done a search on the forums and check out anything that may be similar, but to no avail.
The problem is:
The phone will not receive any text messages, or at least they don't go through to the messaging app.
Text messages were being received normally for around a week
I disabled a bunch of pre-installed Chinese crap that is unfortunately not un-installable as it's baked into the ROM
It happened once, so I factory reset it, and then tested it. The text messages worked fine
I then disabled the Chinese stuff once again and installed Skype. Just to be sure, I sent more test text messages, and they were all received fine.
Around one week later, here we are, she says that text messages are not being received again.
All other functions of the phone are working. Internet / Edge network, sending texts, Play store, everything. Just not the receiving of texts!
I'm fairly confused as to this behaviour, particularly as it seems the text messages are working for a time limited period.
I had some inklings of what it could be:
- The SIII takes a micro-sim, the shop "manually" chopped the SIM using a cutter. Could this have damaged the SIM and caused this behaviour?
- The phone itself is faulty
- Something is up with the China Mobile settings / network and she needs to call them.
What would be your diagnosis, ideas, solutions XDA'ers?
Further information of any kind is, of course, available on request.
**** My ideas for a fix ****
Root the bastard and get a standard UK ROM on the phone to see if it works. However, I have some concerns. Years ago, when I bought my first HTC desire, when I rooted and put a UK ROM on it, I discovered that my phone was an imported Thai version of the phone and almost bricked it into a reboot loop as the phone didn't like a different regions ROM being loaded on.
I had to go through a convoluted process of making a specially edited SD-card to fool the phone into accepting different ROMS. Is this the case with the Galaxy SIII or have times moved on to more sophisticated means?
Thanks.
GJO
Have you try other messaging apps like Hancent SMS or Go SMS to confirm that msg service is not working?
Or maybe the CSC is causing the problem?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Open the stock messaging app. In its menu go to settings. Check that there is a number recorded under message centre. If not use Google to find the number for the carrier you are with and enter it.
I'm on an unrooted phone with a stock Rom and twice messaging has stopped working. The cause was that this number had spontaneously disappeared.

Ok, I've tried:
- alternative messaging apps, and they're not picking it up either.
- the message centre number.
When you say CSC? You mean the carrier code? It was bought in China and fitted with a Chinese ROM, but I'll look at the ROM settings and see what it is.
Thanks.
U dial *#1234# then you can see your csc

I am having this problem. It was all working fine then suddenly it stopped. I don't know what could be the cause but I fooled around with the settings, deleted old text messages and then suddenly I received dozens of text messages.
It's like my phone isn't trying to receive any text messages. It can send text messages out but it won't receive any.
I am using Omega 31.1.
Can someone help me out please?

I had the same issue,
I changed the Network options from gsm only to "Auto" mode, and apparently it worked for me.
Hello to all, :fingers-crossed:
Sorry for my English.
First of all I would like to thank the developers for their hard work.
I have only one problem.
I have a GSM EVO 3D S-Off HBOOT 1.49.007, Root and the new [ROM] [UNOFFICIAL] CyanogenMod 10.1 - 4.2.2 - 22-March-2013.
Everything works fine, also the videocamera (disabling HW Overlay) without 3D.
But I have a problem with sending SMS.
Text messages are not sent ever.
I think I understand the problem, but i ask for help even if it was addressed.
I have an Italian SIM, mobile operator "POSTEMOBILE."
"POSTEMOBILE" uses the Vodafone mobile network to serve its customers.
When the ROM CyanogenMod 10.1 - 4.2.2 locks the mobile operator does not locks Postemobile but Vodafone.
In this way, when I try to send a text message, the phone number of the SMS center is not recognized by Vodafone and returns an error message to be sent.
It 'possible that the problem is this?
And 'possible to fix it?
Grazie a tutti.

SOLVED....
I found the solution by searching the various sites.
In particular, I had help from the site Androidiani.it.
The solution is simple.
When you install a ROM ICS or JB the SMS center number is lost.
In order to reset the number you must type a code on the keypad of the phone.
A hidden menu appears.
The code is *#*#4636#*#* (i think that works for all of android)
Now look for the string SMSC and enter the number of the SMS center of your mobile operator.
Apply this setting with the second button... and well done....
Now you can send SMS with ICS or JB...
Thanks to all...:fingers-crossed:

Try to do a reboot without SIM and again with the SIM.
Then redo the procedure with the code.
Worked for me the first time.
With Sprint I do not know if it works, try looking CDMA forum.

I explained them I can send SMS, but I can't receive them. Btw, I integrated my Sprint # with Google Voice. Now I keep all my sms and voicemail in my google account. I even turned option to send me an email when sms arrives - you can do it with Google voice.
So, first step the Sprint customer service recommended was to clear all cache and data from all my applications which I use or ever used for sms/texting. I did it before though, and I told them it didn't help. Then, they recommended to delete all message treads, basically all your sms. I did. I didn't worry much about loosing them, because I backed up in "SMS Backup & Restore" app already. Then they asked me to take battery out, and while it was out, they reset (or sent) something on their side for my phone. When procedure was done on their server, they asked me to start my phone again. I did. They sent me test sms, and it worked!!! Now sms work well, and I even receive gmails upon their arrivals.
Not everything is so shiny though, I have a different problem: data drop, but this is a different story, and not resolved for me yet: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221579.

Hi
I've searched around and read a lot but couldn't find the answer to my problem.
Here is my issue.
When I dial a number, it tries to call then ends the call right away before it even rings.
Can't receive calls either.
Can't send sms, nor receive sms.
Additional info.
I have full signal and it says my carrier on the status bar
Imei is correct - same as back of phone
Phone is unlocked - checked status
Unlocked with Galaxsim unlock, paid version
used repair gsii by helroz, didn't work
apn is picked up by the phone
carrier sim applications menu shows but don't work
Went back to stock with mobile odin, all the way to gingerbread which I'm using right now.
Please advice on what to do, any help is appreciated.
Interesting; I've never heard of this particular problem before. The first thing I would try would be a different modem, because that's a very easy fix. Also, incorrect APN's could be a factor, even though you say you've already checked that. I would advise checking them again - slowly. Sometimes something as simple as an extra space (or lack thereof, in the case of the 'default, supl' portion of the APN) can cause them not to work correctly.
Good luck.
I've flashed different modems and that didn't work.
Caller ID in settings give error network or sim card problem it says.
Btw I'm trying with different by Sims and both work on other phones.
Apn is correct I double checked. It picked it up auto.
Let me if you think of something else.
Thanks.
