I ask this question sincerely. Its been hard keeping up with all the topics in this section of the forum, and there are many more complaints about things than real reviews from the people who own the phone. I'm on the fence. I've been looking for objective analysis of the phone from the people who have now had it, going on two days.
So, I ask, does anyone wish they didn't pre order? Anyone definitely bringing it back for something you would define as a deal breaker? I know I have nothing to lose to try it for 30 days, but I'm weighing it out to see if I should wait a while for things to get tidied up before I buy one.

I know the release was a bit buggy, but HTC seems pretty good about fixing these issues considering the phone is not even out yet. You can count on the development for this phone skyrocketing once the bootloader becomes unlocked.
I only regret ordering via Early Purchase because my power button's broken, and I'm sitting, staring at my non-functional 3VO, hoping I can get it switched out tomorrow (crosses fingers that stars align).
For the brief time I did use it (finding ways to bypass the power button problem), no complaints.

Yeah, I know its a matter of when, not if on the bootloader so that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Minor bugs are a part of early adoption also. Is the phone really that much better than the OG Evo? I get the specs and all, but I'm running Sense 3.0 on my OG and it runs great. I'm sort of interested in taking 3D pics of my kids and the reports of the camera being better in general is a plus for me.

Despite any of the complaints or bugs that people have reported, I still say that this is an awesome phone, and don't regret buying it at all. Any of the bugs that are being reported now will likely be handled via ota's in a timely manner. Once the bootloader gets cracked and we can get some some custom roms and kernels on this thing it's all over. This is the smoothest phone I've used, even with stock sense.
EDIT: and after reading your second post, let me say that this thing runs 100% smoother and quicker than any of the 3.0 or 2.1/3.0 'hybrid' roms for the OG Evo. I've ran them all on my Evo, and this thing squashes the 3.0 Evo roms, in terms of speed and smoothness. The hardware is simply far superior on this, so it runs much smoother.

Yeah, I remember reading about this earlier, I really feel for you. Glad it will be resolved tomorrow. How much time did you have with it before it went down?

Thanks, this is the stuff I'm looking for. I tend to have periods of buyers remorse on certain purchases and while the bugs seem pretty minor, HTC still has a pretty good record of hot fixing things in short time.
I love the phone. I definitely have some complaints.. some are legit, others are preference based. You're gonna have to physically play around with one before you can really decide if it's for you or not. it is fast and smooth, I do still notice a hang here and there that I'm sure is the fault of Sense 3.0
Hoping to get this thing rooted but, it will be incredibly tough if HTC doesn't keep their promise. Still. rooted or not, I will keep this phone for at least a year..

I have syn running on my evo but you can't beat how smooth this is. I had virus rom and carousel was never this smooth. Not putting them down they did awesome porting the 3d/sensation roms. Also this is the best screen I've had on any phone. everything super fast load. No remorse here but I'm also still running rooted 4g.

Thanks Cripple, I had a VW that I thought had the most awesome low end torque and performance, until I drove my friends Porsche. I see your point about the ports running well enough on the 4G, but being supercharged on the 3D.

Oh, I'm not complaining about the bugs. I was an Early Adopter of the 4G, I know about bugs and it comes with the territory. I was honestly just looking to see if anyone had any real buyers remorse, or deal breaking things with the phone.

Umm, yeah, I try nearly every rom that comes around and....umm...not a single 3.0 or 2.1/3.0 hybrid rom I came across would i consider even slightly close to smooth....I typically tune my phone extremely tight....and at first I blamed a lack of an OC kernel...but....even after letting it settle in for a while those roms on a 4G sucked. It was fun being able to play with my next phone--sorta--before I got it...but...not even close. I just couldn't get it to what I considered usable...while I understand that all phones aren't created equally...somehow...I've never had any bad luck at all with my Evo 4G...at all....if all phones aren't created equally (...aside from the physics and practicalities of CPU fabrication the verdict is still out on that one...) my OG Evo would be one of the best, cream of the crop....and those Sense 3.0alike roms were fun, but, the performance blew hard chunks.....I think perhaps "not all people's standards and expectations are created equal" is a more apt assessment of the situation....YMMV

I agree completely. I think people's expectations and interpretations of what 'smooth' and 'usable' is vary greatly. I never had a problem with my OG Evo (launch day evo, still mint condition), but none of the roms are as smooth as this thing is, and this is a stock htc rom! I can't imagine the possibilities that lay ahead with this phone.
Everything on this phone runs as smooth as butter. Multitasking is a dream and everytime i start an app, I cum a little its so fast. Feeling like you can reach into your screen when looking at 3d content annoys the hell out of me cuz i can't... Lol besides the few software quirks that show up here and there this phone is perfection. I am astounded by the difference between this and the 4G.. wow. I have not once felt any remorse.. buy this phone lol

Still the honeymoon. Check back in about 3 weeks when it gets ugly.
I am completely loving the entire experience so far! So smooth... Fast... I love that I can just pinch the browser window and it shows the pages/allows me to close and add more so quickly.
Battery life has been great for me! Sense 3.0 is crazy cool. U even think the vibration feedback feels so much better than the 4G. The 3D gives me a headache, but it is fun to show off. The camera for 2d focuses better... Can actually take a focused picture of my jack russell. The dog was always a blur on the 4G because he never stays still.
No remorse here at all. It's a solid device!

Seems, all the likes for this phone are eye candy, and not actual practicality. Aside from the 3D what can this phone do that the Evo can't with a custom rom? I keep asking myself, what need do I have with a phone that takes 3D movies or pictures, I mean, a cell phone should never be used as your main camera, the quality is never as good as a DSLR, or even a decent point and shoot. So at best the Evo 3D has more gimmicks then the Evo 4G. So I guess the question is, are the gimmicks worth the extra money?
As far as smoothness, maybe, maybe not. The latest Kingdom and Synergy roms run really smooth on the 4G. It may take a second for an app to come up, but I mean, come on, are our lives that fast paced that one second really matters? Man I miss the 80's.
Forget the 3D, it is just sweet novelty to show off and give your enemies headaches... Think dual core, sense 3.0 goodness. It's a great next gen Evo.

So I've been looking to buying an amaze for the last couple of weeks.
And in the past couple of days I'm having second thoughts.
The amaze still doesn't have s-off, and is lacking in devs. And even of of does get s off who's to says devs are going to buy it? With the HTC one coming.
So my question is, should I buy an Amaze now? Or go with a device with tons of development like the sensation?
Or, wait a little longer and get the One X or whatever it will be called for t mobile. Which will probably get s off pretty quickly with around 4 different versions right?
Any recommendations?
One thing to keep in consideration is that I will be paying full price for the phone. As $70 a month is a little steep right now, as I'm 17.

I love the Amaze. I think it is a great phone. But at this point I don't think I would choose the Amaze. Lack of development, no s-off, and dwindling interest and support would send me in another direction if I had to choose a phone today.
Having said that, I have no regrets and am still very happy with my choice.
The Amaze has great hardware, but its software counterpart is lacking. We don't have many devs for this phone, so if you're okay with not having a lot of ROMs to flash, then by all means get an Amaze
That's really the only reason why I'm having any second thoughts.
Coming from an HTC Incredible there has always been as many Roms as you wanted. Untilled recently everything is just perfect only ICS ports and CM7 are really active lately.

The One S looks good but, I Honestly can't go without a spare battery. No sdcard I could get away with.

honestly coming from the G2x i feel this phone is really solid, ive been running stock and i dont feel the urge to flash, it never heats up, sound quality is amazing on phone and music (imagine with beats audio) i can honestly compare it to my iphone 4 and say its a hell of a lot faster, and nicer. I love the screen on this 4.3 inch is amazing and good multitouch. THe only complaint i have is sometimes the screenbleed from the buttons can be a bit annoying but realy i dont notice it anymore. I get full 24 hour charge atleast so i like it

I came from the myTouch 4G which has all the development that you could ever want for a phone that was treated like a redheaded stepchild by T-Mobile. I decided on the Amaze after lurking in the development subforum and deciding on everything that I was going to do with this phone. When I saw that NRG brought Energy to the Amaze, I was sold. It didn't matter to me that it was only Sense 3.0 either. I was already subscribed to the Energy threads for the MT4G and the Sensation and it was exactly what I wanted for the Amaze.
If you are a flash-o-holic. no. wait for the one S. I mean i wouldn't be two concerend. HTC is well aware of how fast their phones die. I can't imagine that they wouldn't make a phone with terrible battery life and they not an option for a spare.
I came from the TP2 and nrgz had a ROM on that phone. By far my favorite I ran. I've already downloaded all of the files to root and flash the Amaze when I buy it.
And honestly, If the One series turns out to be as good as everyone is hyping about I can always sell the Amaze. Which is unlikely that I would.
I think the number of choices for the Amaze will be fine, I'm trying to find a ROM and stick with it.

CM9 is being worked on and a few other developers are working on AOSP roms for our phone, sure it may take a while for them to be done, but progress is being made.
OK, so I have my eye on the SGS3. I'd like to be able to develop for that like I do my Evo 3D, but I have a few questions since I don't have the phone and there's a lot of experience here. I could probably spend an hour or so searching for this stuff but I figure I might get better ideas from asking.
First, how is the dev scene for this phone? Does it ship s-off? Any issues specific to developing for this phone? Hows the camera? Does it have true zero shutter lag? HTC making phones with a half second shutter delay (that and quality issues) are one thing that has pushed me to try Samsung this time. Finally, it appears that some Sprint customers (like maybe ones with Sprint for 10 years) get an upgrade after a year. Sprint wants me to wait 2 years for any discount. I can't afford the full price but I know sometimes there are unannounced discounts or ways to get it cheaper. For example, Sprint said I didn't qualify last year for my Evo 3D either until someone here pointed out that I should check to see if I was a premier member (I think that was the term). Turns out I was and only had to mention it and I got the discount. Any ideas? Anything like that possible this time?
Oh, I want to keep my Evo 3D so I can develop for both, so I guess getting $100 trade-in discount is out too.

Samsung devices come with unlocked bootloaders, and there is no such thing as s-on or s-off, there is no signature checking in the bootloader.
There is a flash counter and service at the moment, but nothing to stop you flashing or developing custom roms.
Seriously hoping this is true. I switched over to the Epic 4G Touch a few months back. Gave my 3D to my Mom running MeanROM. Been missing it ever since. She gets awesome life running the old 3.3. Just came back home and now updating her to your latest version. Thanks for your hard work on this Rom and making my life a little easier. MeanROM=0 tech support for Mom's phone. :thumbup:

I've been fan of your Mean Rom from Evo 3D and EVO 4G LTE. I recently gave my Evo 4G LTE to my wife and got my self a shiny new Galaxy S3 off of Craiglist for $250.
The Reason why I changed is because I got bored of Sense and although I like CM10, it's neither ready for prime time and missing a lot of the functionality from HTC. Also until Mean Rom 4.0 Sense roms tended to lag if you had lots of apps and Widgets like I did. The 2GB of RAM in the US GS III's was a big seller for me. Also like motion features a lot. This phone has never ever lagged for me on Touch Wiz.
That said, Its super easy to root theses Samsung Phones. Like veyka said, these phones have unlocked bootloaders. You just install a custom recovery using ODIN then flash a small root file to obtain root and avoiding installing factory recovery on boot.
I'll be honest with you, It would be awesome if you could develop Roms for GS III with the quality of your Mean Roms. Although the performance of Touchwiz is second to none I hate the fact the it takes up a lot of my screens real estate for the Dock. I hate that. By the way, few Sprint GS III roms include Google now for ICS like Mean Rom. Currently I use Blazer Rom with Apex launcher. For some reason the Apex launcher transitions are not as smooth as when installed on the Evo 4G LTE though. I guess that's an Apex Launcher issue.
Anyway, hope this info from a user stand point can motivate you to start developing for it.

This is absolutely RIDICULOUS, we have been waiting for an entire month for the 1.22 source code but the galaxy note 10.1 has source already AND THE DEVICE DOESN'T COME OUT FOR A FEW MORE WEEKS!!!!! IS IT REALLY THAT HARD FOR HTC TO UPLOAD A 100MB FILE FOR USE TO USE??? It bugs the hell out of me just how little HTC cares about releasing this stuff...

Over the years Samsung has really stepped up there game. Which is why they are the lead android manufacturer now. HTC needs to take some notes, and get rid of dev unlock, release source codes faster, and upgrade the Android OS faster (evo 3d). Take Samsung for example they told all the US retailers they weren't making different variations of the SGS3 and they released them all around the same time. Why cant HTC do that? My next phone will most likely be a Samsung.

exactly! and ive been tempted to get samsung phones after seeing the s2 and s3 but with all the word about their phones being kinda shotty when it comes to build quality i always end up staying htc... its a vicious circle where you can't win

This is my first HTC phone... I come from mostly samsung. I will not be getting another htc until they step us... The phone build quality is great but all my phones live in otter cases so that does not matter....
I think I'm going to nexus next.... I like flashing to much for this crap...

I'm pretty sure that the heavy delay on the ics upgrade for the EVO 3d was on sprints end...especially since the virgin mobile variant received its upgrade quite a bit sooner...but I do wish they'd release source sooner it is annoying but hey I love their devices so I'll stick it out for a while and see if things get better lol

I've had the Hero, OG EVO, Epic 4g, Moment, and Photon....I've played with the Epic 4g touch as well.
Samsung's have been notorious for GPS and other build problems...After my experience with the Photon ill never buy Moto again. You think dev is slow here....try a Moto phone with a locked Bootloader.
I always end up going back to HTC.
With that said I'm really surprised how unstable stock is...especially Sense and the WiFi drop issue drives me up a wall.
Hopefully this will get resolved soon cuz I love this phone overall.

Agreed gps can be a bear with Samsung. Also in almost every modem update its like the first modem they did ever. Better connection, lower battery. Next version bad connection, good battery, rinse, repeat.
Oh and as I have said before. Still waiting on evo 4g 4.67 ota kernel source. Well over gpl time. Now they don't even respond to my requests, at least they used to, until I advised them of the dates... And I'm sorry, 5.07 ota, doesn't qualify as reseting the clock,.

They're funny to me because of what people are complaining about. People are mad at HTC for not releasing their source fast enough just so they can get rid of the UI that's on damn near all HTC android phones. If I were HTC, I wouldn't be in a rush either.
And sheesh, when the source does drop, you still have people impatient. Comparing this dev community to another phone's...always asking when a kernel is going to be made or when CM or AOKP will be dropped. I don't even know why people are buying phones now...I would say they're only doing it for CM and/or AOKP but if you wanted that...you could've just gone with the Nexus.
Idk if it's just me but i have NO idea why 95% of the people on this forum have this phone. Clearly it's not because you like the Evo 4g LTE because threads like these are proof that you do not like this phone.
I just don't get it....and people are so quick to bash iPhones too but c'mon...look at these threads. There was a thread where a dude was disappointed in this phone because it didn't have all CM or AOKP up as fast the OG Evo did. Seriously? And that got me thinkin'...the majority of the people are disappointed in that way...disappointed because they don't have CM or AOKP because HTC or Samsung didn't drop source which would help the devs and blah blah. When you look at it, people are just buying newer phones to run the exact same ROM they were on before. And people say they like Android because you aren't locked down or any of that stuff...but most of y'all might as well be because when presented with something different, you hate it. But that's me going on a tangent because this thread isn't even about that!
This thread. Is about. HTC. Not releasing source. And people are saying "This is my last HTC phone." I'm serious...if I'm the only one who sees how absurd that is..wow. Seriously...just enjoy the phone. If source was such a big deal...should've gone with the Nexus. Damn shame that some of y'all even factor that into a decision on the phone. The dev community should not be what makes or breaks a phone. These dudes don't work for HTC...so when you start factoring the dev community into positives and negatives for the phone...you put a lot of pressure on devs who aren't even making bank on this.
I just can't believe that we've all lived through times when we didn't even have phones...and the one thing that upsets everyone the most is the fact that HTC hasn't dropped source. Never mind the fact taht we are doing some insane things on this phone right now..doing things we've never even dreamed of a decade ago...and one of the biggest issues of right now is ****in source. Ungrateful.
I'd rather put my nuts in a vice than buy a Samsung phone. We have custom kernels that work with the latest ota anyway. HTC for life!

Idk if it's just me but i have NO idea why 95% of the people on this forum have this phone. Clearly it's not because you like the Evo 4g LTE because threads like these are proof that you do not like this phone.
I just don't get it....and people are so quick to bash iPhones too but c'mon...look at these threads. There was a thread where a dude was disappointed in this phone because it didn't have all CM or AOKP up as fast the OG Evo did. Seriously? And that got me thinkin'...the majority of the people are disappointed in that way...disappointed because they don't have CM or AOKP because HTC or Samsung didn't drop source which would help the devs and blah blah. When you look at it, people are just buying newer phones to run the exact same ROM they were on before. And people say they like Android because you aren't locked down or any of that stuff...but most of y'all might as well be because when presented with something different, you hate it. But that's me going on a tangent because this thread isn't even about that!
This thread. Is about. HTC. Not releasing source. And people are saying "This is my last HTC phone." I'm serious...if I'm the only one who sees how absurd that is..wow. Seriously...just enjoy the phone. If source was such a big deal...should've gone with the Nexus. Damn shame that some of y'all even factor that into a decision on the phone. The dev community should not be what makes or breaks a phone. These dudes don't work for HTC...so when you start factoring the dev community into positives and negatives for the phone...you put a lot of pressure on devs who aren't even making bank on this.
I just can't believe that we've all lived through times when we didn't even have phones...and the one thing that upsets everyone the most is the fact that HTC hasn't dropped source. Never mind the fact taht we are doing some insane things on this phone right now..doing things we've never even dreamed of a decade ago...and one of the biggest issues of right now is ****in source. Ungrateful.

no i bought this phone because i had the original evo 4g and loved it more than any other phone, then when i saw this phone i knew i had to get it. i love this phones build quality and the hardware in it but its b.s. that htc will not release source. i don't even care about aosp since sense 4 actually seems like something useful and not crazy bloated like sense 2.0+ i just want some kernels to run on sense so we can get some proper fixings going on instead of modifying the hell out of the old base's source and using every work around in the book to get them to function properly. not to say that the kernels we are starting to see are bad. and the saying "oh should have got a nexus" is bullsh*t if i wanted one i would have got one, but instead i wanted the evo lte and its more up to date and better hardware. if i wanted an already outdated phone i would have just stuck with my original evo. the point is, no matter what phone you buy you SHOULD be able to do what you want with it and you SHOULD be givin the proper code to do it with. and since htc is failing to do this, it is the reason there is a new thread every week complaining about it and they have a damn good reason to do so because this is ridiculous. so if you don't like the threads then tough sh*t because your going to keep seeing them till it drops and it will happen again with the next update. get used to it
Edit: and you can't honestly sit there and say that this isn't completely unnecessary. THEY ALREADY HAVE THE SOURCE READY, all they have to do is upload it within a day or 2 of an ota like samsung and people would be happy. and what do they have to lose by releasing it? they already got our money when we bought the phone so what do they care what we do with it?

People got the phone for the hardware. Camera, screen, storage, CPU, etc. People on a development forum are likely going to get a phone with development and AOSP in mind, yes. That makes perfect sense. Also, many people got this phone trusting the reviewers that said Sense 4.0 was toned down and unobtrusive. They were let down, and are holding out hope that the devs can pick up HTC's mess and clean it up and utilize this powerful hardware. This isn't mind-blowing stuff. People didn't want the Nexus because it was dated when Sprint got it, and the camera and screen seemed far inferior.

I agree with you for the most part.
What I disagree on is Sense NOT being toned down and less obtrusive. Sense 4.0 is much better than Sense 3.0 was. It's much smoother, it looks better, and keeps the functionality it needs while not being too bloated like previous versions of Sense were.
What drags the Sense experience down is the memory management, which is lacking. I would argue that is less of an issue with Sense and more of an issue of optimization of memory. I for one never had Sense reloads when I was stock, but then again I was never running a ton of apps at once. All HTC has to do is make the memory management less aggressive and we wouldn't have nearly as many problems.
Sense DOES utilize this phone's hardware very well, and you can see that in how smooth everything is. We just need that memory management worked on. If we had more RAM in the phone it would be PERFECT.
I still don't understand the RAM argument. We aren't even that close to maxing our RAM, so why do we need more? I've been told by people much more informed than me about Android that it utilizes RAM differently than Windows, so 100MB free is no different than 1.1 GB free. I agree with you that the memory management is at fault here, but I think that's the end of the story.
Edit: TouchWiz is much smoother than Sense, and many people had many Sense reloads while stock... I'm not sure I care for Sense 4.0 much more than I did 3.0, especially considering the fake multi-tasking.

okay guys heres a thought....how about instead of turning on each other, and starting the talk of "ill never own an HTC again" crap, you do something productive and start a movement against HTC proactively to be loud about them being lazy on releasing source code?....Leaving HTC isn't going to fix the issue at hand, as they wont see the effect in their sales #'s by the few in the dev community leaving to make them give a F....What they will do is react to a giant community outcry over a pressing issue on slow source release! They did it with the locked bootloaders so another push for source might make them change their ways...
Just saying, threads saying "this is my last htc device b/c they are slow are releasing source..." are silly and pointless....
Do something to make a change and start a vocal complaint movement instead of just sitting here and complaining/whining about it on xda!
Does CyanogenMod ever plan on releasing CM9 for the evo 3D maybe after source is released? Tired of all the developer drama just waiting on an official release..if that will ever happen?
I am starting to think it will never happen for the 3D. I think HTC got what they wanted and people jumped ship and traded up. I wish more people would have made the move to Samsung so that HTC would get the message, but I guess history will keep repeating itself. As for CM9/10 development. At best, you can assume minimal effort on the part of devs. They have bigger fish to fry.
I'm pretty sure we'll never get an official build of CM9, let alone CM10. Just have to hope some dev will take on the task.
Sobe did say he would try and he is talented, so fingers crossed.
I think many people have Evo 3D so why not? There only need to be enough voices for that and if they will have a time they can do it.

Have you tried using the last release of Devil Toast? That ROM has to be like 95% finished, I get absolutely great battery life out of it as compared to earlier versions. The WiMax is working, the only thing not working is the second camera for 3D pictures and I can live without that as the phone is the only means of looking at 3D pictures I had anyways (plus they give me a headache).
I'm sorry that Agraben stopped working on it, but he left us with one fantastic gift and I appreciate all his efforts he put forth.
