Numeric keypad on Motorola Atrix - Atrix 4G Themes and Apps

Hi guys,
My friend has bought herself a German Motorola Atrix with Android 2.2. It is locked, but has root (I did that).
Now she is a hell of a texting witch and likes to text a lot, but hates the qwertz keypad. So she is desperately searching for an app which offers the numeric keypad in the Atrix system for everything (texting, e-mail, surfing, ...).
It would also be nice, if it offers Swype like in the Samsung Wave handsets: T9 Trace it is called there. It offers Swype gestures in qwertz AND numeric keypad, which really rocks.
Is that numeric keypad for texting on the Motorola Atrix somehow possible (with or without Swype)?
Thank you in advance.

that seems like a lot for one keyboard to have. tell her to try touchpal keyboard. its new and free on the android market untill october or something like that. i think it has german support it also has swype like imput along with different layouts for input.
hope that helps?

Sounds like you are looking for flext9

Unfortunately, both support/offer only qwertz keypad, no numeric keyboard. I tested them.

I've been using GO Keyboard and it has a good numeric pad that also offers T9 and fast layout switching.

Thank you guys for your app hints. That helped a lot. At least, the girl has now her numeric keypad.
Now I am still searching a keyboard app with numeric layout AND Swype/T9 Trace.
Just to remember: "T9 Trace" is Samsung's Swype (not T9 only).
I have a feeling that there is no app like this, because I looked in two other forums in Germany and there were a lot of people asking for this without success.

Something like this:

For all interested: I found a solution (app) for our problem. Ultra Keyboard from Binary Bulge has got Swype in 3 x 4/numeric keypad layout.
It is still not as good as the T9 Trace on Samsung Wave, bu I am really happy about this.

I have to say, that seems like the most inefficient way to put in text... Buy modern smartphone with large screen, replaced keyboard with a kludge that was forced on us by limits of technology 20+ years ago? You are, of course, free to use whatever works for you; but wouldn't it be better to just retrain yourself to use a proper keyboard? Soon you'll type faster and easier...

Thank you, Touchpal looks good, but like all the others it does not have swype feature (touchpal curve called here) on the numeric keyboard layout (12 keys called here).
That is what this thread is about. We search a keyboard app, that has swyping/tracing on the numeric layout like "T9 Trace" from Dragonfly (which is for Bada phones only).
The only keyboard app I found having this is called Ultra Keyboard, but is not working as good/fast as "T9 Trace" from Samsung Wave phones.

No, unfortunately, it does not have this. I just installed it with a lucky smile, but then got disappointed again. TouchPal Curve is working only the qwery layout, not on 12 button layout.

SwiftKey is very fast once you learn the shortcuts and give it time to learn how you type. Their AI is awesome! There's a free trial in the play store. They'll be releasing a swype-like feature soon.

I know the modes, but the last (the 12 keys mode) does NOT have TouchPal Curve (their Swype). TouchPal Curve works only the qwerty keyboard.
That is what we are talking about.

We have Paranoid Android (Jellybean 4.12) on the phone.

Would be amazing if we could port the textinput-tng.apk from Xperia SK17i GB 2.3.4, that keyboard is pure gold, Both landscape QWERTY (Swipe included) with vertical T9 Numeric keypad...
But actually i don't know how...

I've not a single complaint about this version and I've always wished I could have the best features of Swype, etc. and have the features of SlideIT. I really do think it is finally better than Swype in every way possible.
This is not a spam. I don't work for them. I'm just so happy with the thing, I wanted to share.

Thanks for the heads up. In your excitement though you appear to have spelled the app's name wrong several times. It's SlideIT. I mention this in case it makes any difference for people searchwise.

Ooops! Yes, I did. I requested a mod to edit the title for search purposes. Thanks.
Anyway, I've really been pleased with the performance of this software.
For me, the best things over Swype are:
delete on error erases the entire word, not just one letter (unless you want to)
multiple language access with one click literally.
shortcuts
text selection is better/easier
etc.

Watched the entire vid. Don't see a Mic key anywhere. It needs to be on the first default keyboard.
Otherwise, some nice features. I'd also prefer to have access to the cursor positioning arrow key more easily. Looks like at least 3 buttons to get there.
Thanks for the reference though.
I ve been using it since yesterday and i am definitely going to prefer it over swype. Lots of shortcuts and dictionary seems to be better than swype..well at least for me.

i prefer swype 10times over this.
plus swype morphs are sexy
After a quick trial run I'm liking it better than Swype on my rooted Vibrant. I'll try to remember to come back here and post some thoughts after a couple days.
One of my main problems with Swype was always their word choice window, SlideIT does it much better by putting the suggestions right above the top row of keys where they are with the stock keyboard, so I love that.
After a quick trial on my rooted Vibrant, I'm kinda liking it better than Swype for a few reasons.
1. The word suggestion is not a random pop-up that hides everything. It's right above the keyboard which makes much more sense (personal preference).
2. It appears to be more formal and accurate, especially when inputting new words and keeping the caps, like ASCE.
3. It's overall layout is more to my liking (personal preference).
4. You don't have to hunt for it, make sure the ROM you flash has it, or worry about losing it in the future.
Good find, OP. Thank you.
Still loving it so far. The one drawback I've noticed is the only numeric mode had the numbers across the top of the keyboard, there's no keypad mode that I could see.

It doesn't replace Swype. It adds another keyboard. If you wish, you can delete Swype. I have.
I was a long-time fan of Swype, and the previous iterations of SlideIT were pretty marginal in comparison, but V3 has come a long way and I use it daily and much prefer it. It's much more accurate than Swype, generally, in my experience, and it does a far better job in multi-language accuracy and much faster at switching languages. It's Spanish dictionary is better, for example. The shortcuts/abbreviations are an invaluable feature to me.

Interesting, I use thumb keyboard and really like it.
In landscape thumbs-mode, how do suggestions work? Is the suggested word in the CENTER of the display? A long reach with the thumb??
It has a numbpad in the middle of the display.

It has 3 different themes and also has a full keyboard layout like the tablet keyboard.
I grabbed it. The word suggestions in the top middle of the keyboard are worthless when you're using the split thumb keyboard though. I also don't like how you can't make the overall keyboard smaller like you can do with thumb keyboard.
the swipe to delete entire word feature is nice, I've already become accustomed to it. If you quickly swipe right to left across the keys it'll delete the entire last word, a nice touch especially on a predictive keyboard.
This keyboard is hard to get used to in both modes. Maybe that's just me though.
I downloaded it and switched to the full keyboard instead of the split. Absolutely worthless. Horrible lag and it ignored touch input especially on the space bar. Uninstalled and got the refund.
This has to be the most responsive keyboard for the SGT. Those of you having problems must have some greasy fingers . Seriously, though, the split keyboard is awesome. Well worth the $1.99 price tag.
Needs more advanced options. Imho
Well Ive been using Thumb Keyboard ever since i got my Tab, love it. But after using Swift X Tablet keyboard, it seems much smoother and cleaner. (IMO of course) BOTH keyboards are great, although ThumbK has many more options, many which are rather useless IMO, they both get the job done VERY well.
Love swiftkey on my phone, but it has a looong way to go to be usable on a tablet. Thumb keyboard is miles ahead.
Using numbers on swiftkey is very clumsy as is the layout of the predication choices. With thumb keyboard both are (excuse the pun) right under your thumb.

SwiftKey definitely is better for predicitons, but its lack of arrow keys and a tab key is keeping me using Thumb for now.
I agree that the addition of direction keys would be a huge benefit but I find the predictive choices to be much better than thumb keyboard. Not as customizable as thumb key, but I do like it better because it is not cluttered.
Try it and see how you like it!

Yeah alright, but what about the text shortcuts, pgup pgdown keys and navigational keys, the toolbar and last but not least the possibility to adjust the width and height of the keys so the keyboard fits better to the range of your thumbs.
A good adjustable layout makes predictions rather a unnecessary luxery. Imagine typing on a regular PC keyboard ... do you really need the fancy (nagging) predictions in that case

What is the best, most accurate keyboard app?

For typing (qwerty) . So far I have tried GO Keyboard. Im just so used to hardware keypads. I'm just trying to speed up a bit and cut my typos. Suggestions... ?
I like swiftkeyx, plus I got it for 10 cents during the 100 app sale. I'ts fast and I love how the predictions work. I personally don't like swipe/swype style keyboards, hence my recommendation.

seriously, the learning prediction is out of this world. 75% of all my texts are done via prediction now and I believe that number is growing.
I dont like Swype. Not crazy about tracing my fingers over the letters. Seems more of a hassle and takez a while to get zippy on it. The Hackers kb looks interesting enough because it has the arrow keys. But, is it fast and accurate? Think it would be small in portrait mode to squish all them extra keys in.

Smart Keyboard Pro is the one I always seem to be coming back to.
I don't like the "swype type" keyboards at all. SwiftkeyX has absolutely AWESOME word prediction, but you can't resize the KB the way to can using Smart Keyboard Pro.
I like to text in portrait mode using the compact qwerty setup & SKP with its infinitely resizeable button height works super.

yea, I just noticed that but it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference what size I choose.
In the Smart KB Pro settings, it gives you a slider for key height in both portrait & landscape that basically allows you to make the keys any height you want.
I don't change the landscape setting, but I like to make the portrait keys a LOT bigger & this KB is the only one I've tried that allows you to do this.

I uninstalled that GO keyboard app. I had more mistakes on that thing than I did with stock Gingerbread kb. That and I hate how it hid symbol keys in second page. And it constantly wanted to update other parts if the app. Actually, I uninstalled it because I think it blew up my IMO chat app. App worked flawlessly for 2 weeks straight.. then a day after I get GO kb.. im chatting and suddenly imo goes into a FC loop. I kill it.. it still show in the notifications but not TM.. look at the notifications, imo FC again...and again. I reboot same thing. idk what happen but i had to remove both imo and GO to get rid of all the FC loops...

I don't think I could live without Swype now. I love it.
SwiftKey hands down the best keyboard. It's the first thing I put on any phone I get.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.

Does S3 have built in swype keyboard?

I have a Sensation XE currently and it has a built in keyboard for swipe words, called trace
Will the S3 have one built into OS naively? I know there are ones on Play Store but with everything being typed on them prefer built in one from manufacturer.

Probably not, as I haven't heard a mention of it anywhere.
But there shouldn't be any privacy issues if you can find a keyboard on the play store that doesn't require internet connection.

Actually, I'd probably guess that it will have it, as it comes standard on other Galaxy phones. Keep in mind that I don't have a GS3, but I would think it odd if they downgraded their features over successive releases..
You know that Swype is free and downloadable on their website, right?
Yes I know swype is free, but as above would rather have a stock app, then no privacy issues.
Play store keyboard apps I'm a little wary of.
Does the S2 have a swype/trace keyboard inbuilt stock app?
The international S2 has it stock, dont know about carrier versions. It is an interesting question and it would seem to be a no brainer since Samsung has commercial licensing agreetment(s) with Swype. It could almost swear somewhere or other I saw a video with the swype keyboard up? lol Getting old I guess.
I'm surprised people still use swype. It was fun for a few minutes, but typing is where it's at. Especially SwiftKey.

swiftkey depresses me.. I realised that I was more predictable than I had previously thought.
swype is still my favourite though.. I actually have fun with it and I can type things up faster than with swiftkey or other keyboards (or at least it feels this way)
Once you get good at it, swype can be really fast
I have swiftkey pro and use it when I want to do more technical typing such as a message that uses a lot of characters, numbers, etc. For these I find it goes quicker. For most typical stuff though like the average text message I can do it much more swiftly with swype. As said, swype takes a little time to get used to but once you do it becomes very quick and easy. I am not surprised that the phone typing record is held by a swype user.
I come to android from iOS and so to have an option was great! Didn't know it was built into my XE (known as trace) until someone showed me, I now is out all the time.

Do you have any issues while typing on the keyboard? Running CM/AOSP ROMs it seems that sometimes it wants to not register a specific key no matter what until u restart it, along with other issues. Maybe you have experienced this with other android Custom ROMs. My main question is does that keyboard have any bugs like this? If not I'll be blissfully happy!

To be honest I prefer the aosp keyboard over this because I feel it has better prediction. I think Samsung tried to make it smarter but ended up screwing it. Specially for non standard English words. But may be its just me. Others might find it working well for them.
But I haven't had any issues in registering any letters. The only problem I had was while typing in sygic navigation app where it was picking a different letter from what I was typing. But it might be an app specific issue.
Apart from that the Samsung keyboard is more or less the same as aosp.

Thumb Keyboard 4 is where its at.
its not talked about as much, but let me just put it this way
Swift Key is based around the idea that youll make tons of mistakes and itll correct them for you
Thumb Keyboard 4 is based around the idea that youll have so much room typing that you wont make any errors, and the ones you do itll correct them for you.
i find thumb keyboard 4 to be the best. swift key forces me to pick auto corrections, i dont like that.. try making o.o on swift key, go ahead try it lol..
pics i think are from Thumb Keyboard 3, the interface is much prettier now in thumb keyboard 4, but the keyboard layout is the same. there are 14 layouts to choose from, and you can change keys to be custom characters/combos

Swype is much faster than any typing. And according to reviews GS3 has it.

mmm so which is it, or does it depend on the locality?
I'm in UK so want to know the UK version.
Yes, bought my phone in Dubai and it has it listed under keyboard options as "keyboard skype".

[APP] SwiftKey Flow Keyboard Beta 4.0.0.61 - DOWNLOAD LINK

Hey all, not sure who knows about this, but I ran into it and thought I'd share it.
Amazing job by the SwiftKey developers.
Great for people who type in more than one language at a time.
I'm simply sharing this awesome app.
All credit goes to the SwiftKey developers.
Enjoy!
Old trial expired. Make sure to download the new one in order for predictions to work.

SwiftKey Flow Beta 4.0.0.61 changelog (taken from their website):
-Flow-through-space autocommit: if you flow-through space but mess up your last word, all the prior words will be inserted (instead of losing all the words)
-Flow in landscape on tablets (not on split layout with numpad)
-Battery usage improved (when flowing and when not in use)
-Performance of flowing and tapping improved
-Longpress of bottom-right (smiley/enter) button now works
-Fixed some force close issues
-Fixed some memory leaks
-Predictions not lost when changing keyboard layout (e.g to symbols)
-Fixed DOuble CApitalization issue
Things to be aware of:
-Flowing currently only works in fields where you see the prediction bar: in fields that have their own prediction or completion there is no prediction bar and therefore no Flow (e.g. URL bars, search bars, the “to” field of an email)
-Flow-through-space only works in languages where smart space works – in some languages this is turned off because words are often made by combining other words together, and so smart space would divide up words that you want to keep as one. Arabic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Georgian, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Persian (Farsi), Romanian, Swedish, Tagalog, Turkish, Ukranian, Urdu may not work with Flow-through-spaceSwiftKey Flow Beta does not currently contain any features that were new in SwiftKey 3.1 (Berry theme, new languages, split layout in landscape for normal-sized devices)
-Slide-left-to-delete a whole word does not work when Flowing is enabled – instead try holding down the backspace key to delete word-by-word
Known issues:
-Flow trail is sometimes left on the screen at the end of a word
-Personalization service continues running when it has finished
-Memory usage is still higher than we would like
-Flow trail is very faint on some CyanogenMod ROMs
-Force closes on Motorola Atrix and LG G2X with custom ROMs >= 4.0
-If a language pack is downloaded while typing the keyboard is not refreshed
-Predictions are too large on LDPI devices
-Predictions occasionally lost when alternately backspacing/spacing at the end of a word
-Ukrainian spit layout is broken
-Estonian words containing ö are not predicted
-Arrow keys do not repeat on longpress
Tested to work on:
Hugger/Fau Novena ROM 11/25
The Padawan ROM v7 & 5

Very good job, thank you.
Interesting, I'll check it out.
Edit I wonder why it needs to read my sms messages?

It learns from what you type to more accurately predict what you are trying to type out. It gets pretty damn accurate. Been using Swiftkey for awhile now, and started using Flow last week when the Beta launched. Love it.
I've used it from time to time (have both Flow and Swype installed), and it does a pretty good job. And, keep in mind that it's still the first stages of Beta release for it, so it's only going to get better from here. =)
Thanks for putting the link out here.

Nothing has changed there, it's always had that for "Personalization". It can read SMS, Facebook, twitter, etc, to pick up custom words for the dictionary. All optional.
i have personally been using the swiftkey flow for the past couple days and i must say i do like this. swift real swype that i have actually liked!
:good:
I'm using it now. It's taking me a bit of time to get used to keeping my finger on the keyboard, but this keyboard is awesome! Thanks very much for passing it along. I'll buy the final version without a doubt. I wouldn't have found out about it without your post.

Does anyone have the inside scoop with the SwiftKey devs that would know whether or not a one-handed operation keyboard is in the works at all? I swear by SwiftKey, but literally the only thing lacking for me is that. I'd probably pay $50 for that app if it was available!
(sorry for the minor hijack)
Test driving it now..
