my question is it just me but in the stock browser I get terrible checkerboard effect? I have tried lots of roms from stock to the latest modded roms but all the same.
also is the autofit page feature only in landscape or have I missed something in the settings? I pinch to zoom for autofit the page but in order for it to work I have to rotate to landscape first and then back for it to work in portrait mode.
if all this has been covered could someone please post the link for me.
cheers Alan.

Checkerboard effect is normal due to the way the browser works, being gpu accelerated combined with a caching method to provide utter smoothness even with flash videos being played. The autofit seems to work for me when I only double tap instead of pinching.
it does zoom in when I double tap but then when I pinch again to get closer it doesn't autofit unless I tip it into landscape first. my galaxy s did it perfectly without having to tilt into landscape mode. not a big deal as I use opera now but would prefer to use the stock browser. thanks for your reply.

I guess It's all in the title : After 10 days of using the browser I can clearly say that I don't like it (checkered effect, pixelated zoom, cant double tap to zoom, text doesn't reflow...), and even though I tried other browsers (Opera, FF, Dolphin...) my favorite is still the stock browser from Gingerbread or the slightly modified one from Cyanogenmod.
Is there any way I can replace the samsung one with one of those ?
Thanx.
You can double tap to zoom, which also simultaneously reflows the text. But yeah about everything else you're right...the checkerboard effect is annoying :/ As of yet, there's no way to replace the Samsung browser with either the CM one or the standard Gingerbread one, sorry to disappoint...
Double tapping never really worked for me : it zooms but only by like 5% so it's pretty useless. Is there a setting somewhere ?
Thanx for the answer anyway

are you tripping the browser is incredible..
Nothing else is as smooth, i regret buying dolphin HD.
The samsung browser smashes everythign I compare it too including the iphone 4 so I'm not sure how you can be unhappy.

The stock browser is really good and definitely out does othe rbrowsers I've used. I find dolphin to be a bit troublesome and it is aesthetically unpleasent also.
I've found the browser to be fantastic. It's the only Android phone to have smooth scrolling like the iPhone. Why has it taken so long? :/
if you switch to a different browser it wont be as smooth because it wont be hardware accelerated. the samsung stock is optimized with the GPU it seems.
that said, i played with the Infuse and it too seems hardware accelerated, showed the checkered background, yet it reflowed text just like its supposed to. double tap reflowed text. and pinch to zoom reflowed text.
why would samsung implement on one device but not the other?

Maybe it's a bug on SGS2 that'll get fixed by a firmware update. Samsung needs to be aware of this bug though.

+1
although i do have opera 11 aswell as it has slightly easier navigation.. for quicker browsing
I would trade the smoothness of stock browser for AOSP browser in a heartbeat.
Smoothness: stock (100%) AOSP (90%)
Full screen : stock (0%) AOSP (100%)
text reflow : stock (10%) AOSP (100%)
text selection: stock (100%) AOSP (90%)
window switch: stock (50%) AOSP (100%)
The window switching ui is just fancy but not practical at all. It require so many swipes and clicks to select/close windows.

Wow I didn't realize samsungs custom browser was not likes this much. Is it really that bad? Makes me enjoy my stock browser much more.
Posted in another forum with no luck. Default browser text is too small for my eyes although I realize it is not issue for most. Pinching and zooming is real pain. On almost all android browsers and all windows 7 browsers, you can change the default zoom but I can't find a way on touchpad and desperately need this for browser to be useable for me. There are some hacks I am aware of to change the default text size and it works for many mobile web pages but not most full desktop pages that set their own text size. Hence I need to change the default zoom not the default text. Surely this can't be that hard and would be extremely grateful if someone would help even if they don't perceive the issue of default zoom as a problem for them. Thanks in advance!

I don't have one [yet] to test, but I think I saw in a video you can double tap on text to zoom in a bit. This should be easier than pinch and zoom.
does work sometimes but very inconsistent. Still wish I could just change the default zoom but have posted in several forums and no respons
hello. so i became tired of the portrait mode and i wanted to experience something different. so i turned on auto rotate and disabled portrait mode and enabled landscape mode in cyanogenmod settings. everything looks great. i even applied 140 dpi settings to emulate 800x480 resolution. but there's a problem with the phone dialer since i cannot see the keypad. but i can bear with it anyway.
my problem right now is that the lockscreen is not in landscape mode. i looked all over google and can't find a solution. do you guys have any thoughts with the matter at hand?
It isn't a problem because the android smartphones are meant to be used in portrait mode. You could lock to portrait but not to landscape.

but they did put auto-rotate right? so i think it's also meant to be used with landscape. i do believe that android smartphones, with all its customization and flexibilty, are built to satisfy and adapt to your needs as far as it can handle. and with that being said, i think a landscape lock screen is very much possible.
Possible. Widgetlocker offers that I think?
But I don't know about native cyanogenmod. Stock rom, definitely not.

works great! thanks. i hope that there would be a custom rom in the future dedicated to the landscape lovers out there.
The new version has honeycomb and ics lockscreens so I guess you'll like it.
There are a few things (software) that really annoy me in the SII, anyone knows if they have been addressed in the SIII:
No text reflow in stock browser
click on location in calendar widget does not go to google map
cannot scroll to next month, etc in calendar widget
Picture taken by camera has nothing to do with what you see on screen
All software, all easily fixable if they bother...

the issues with text reflow arent an SGS issue, its an apk issue. the default browser just blows.. why are you using it anyway? Dolphin or Opera are the way to go man. and Opera Mobile has flawless text reflow
sorry the calender app is sucking for you, this one IS samsungs fault, maybe theyll fix it on the SIII, but you could always try a new calender app from the market.
pictures taken by camera has nothing to do with what you see on screen, [email protected] yes this is fixed, its called "ZERO SHUTTER LAG" and it makes me veryyyy happy. what you see on screen when you snap a picture is exactly what youll see when you take a picture.
HOWEVERRRR, if you want a fix for your S2 right now, i got one. download Fast Burst camera app from the market, it can take like 20 pictures a second, and what you see IS what you get. rapidly snap the shutter button, or hold it down for a DSLR machine gun sounding shutter attack haha, this is the camera you wanna use to catch fast shots, like your dog jumping, or someone flipping a coin. things beast

Yeah, but what annoys me is that HTC phones have a great stock browser *with text reflow* and the calendar is brilliant.
Surely Samsung should address this usability issues before getting on the flashy gestures functionalities...
Also remember that Dolphin recorded and sent to the mothership the list of web sites you visited. They allegedly "corrected" that. But after such a security blunder I will never use their products again...

The text reflow in stock browser was a setting you can change. If you go to your settings, there should be a "Auto-fit pages" that's unchecked by default (at least for Samsung ROMs). I think by default, it's checked for other phones/ROMs.
I haven't flashed my SGSII with the Samsung stock ICS ROM, so I can't speak to that... but it's there for all of the Gingerbread Samsung ROMs I had. (I'm currently on CM9).
I can flash back to a Samsung ICS ROM to verify.
UPDATE: I'm on the stock SGS2 ICS TW ROM, and verified: In the browser, hit the menu button, Settings, Advanced, Auto-fit pages. That will control if the text reflows or not.
Now the thing that irks me on SGSII (again with Gingerbread Samsung ROMs) is there's no touch-to-focus while taking a video. The HTC One X/S, iPhone, and Moto Razr has this feature, so not sure why Samsung left it out. I hope they put it in the SGS3 TW ROM.
It irks me that it's not in the Google stock ICS builds (CM9, built from source, GNex, etc). This is, of course, a problem stemmed from Google's own source code. All those nice features (pano, snapshot while videoing, but no touch-focus while videoing).
The video autofocus is not reliable.

That option switches on text reflow only when you double tap to zoom. There is still no text reflow on pinch-to-zoom.
It's quite annoying when browsing forums and in general sites with lots of text content
I'll try Quick ICS, it sounds promising.
The thing is, I wanna get a SIII but I have to admit that between Sensation and SII the user experience for me was better on the sensation, it just felt tighter. It's the small things... I'll have a play as soon as it hits the shops!

Ah, I see. You're correct on that. Is this behavior also on the Chrome browser?

The pinch zoom in the browser works fine for me. Not all apps support zoom.
Hmm.. My zoom is working fine on stock browser and on dolphin browser as well.
