Hi, I have strange problem with my SGS2. While I'm in my apartment I simply can't use it to make phone calls.
Someone calls me, I answer, either by dragging or by pressing home button (I set that option in the call setting menu). But nothing happens, ringing stops, but screen stays the same, showing that someone is calling me, and of course, it isn't connected, no voice is coming through. I can drag answer icon all day long but it won't make it connect. If caller is patient enough it will connect after 30-60 seconds after I tried to answer the call.
Second problem is that if I call someone, or it connects us after those 30-60 seconds, call will simply be dropped after 5-10 seconds.
Signal is fine, 3 or 4 bars, when I'm somewhere else I don't have these issues. Few days ago I got called while I was in underground garage in same building I live in, there were no bars on signal indicator, but phone answered immediately and it didn't drop for those 2-3 minutes I talked. But When I'm in my apartment (I live on the 4th floor, there are no large buildings blocking the signal, and anyway, phone says signal is 3-4 bars...) I'm unable to make or answer calls.
This is from the first day I bought it, at first I thought it's something with network, that they were doing something, since my old HTC Legend had no problems here, but after a month it's the same.
Do android phones have radio "part" in their software? Like older WinMo phones did? I remember my yet older HTC Artemis had so I could flash other radio versions to get better reception and battery life.
Or does someone have better idea? Because I'm all out, warranty is useless since this isn't something that happens everywhere so I can't show "them" it doesn't work...
Firmware is stock, I debranded it from t-mobile to XWKE7, kies recognizes it so I think I did that part OK. But anyway, this problem is from day one, before I reflashed it for the first time.

Thanks, I'll look if there are alternative software for baseband/modem. Hopefully that will help.

I have had 2 different vibrants now and they both have done the same thing. I haven't been able to isolate the problem to any one thing so I ask if there is anyone else experiencing the same problem. My network connection just freezes. I can't call or text and I have no data. If I try to make a call, it freezes on dialing and the only way to get it back is reboot. This is happening about twice a day and is really a pain. The only way I know it has happened is by trying to make a call and it freezes. I don't know how long it has been that way and when people try to call me, it goes straight to vmail. I put a new SIM card in thinking that was the problem, but it didn't help. I have searched everywhere trying to find a fix. TMO CSR was absolutely no help at all. Shocking.
BTW I am in an area with no 3G coverage. I am on EDGE all the time.

Since you have had the problem now with two different phones it could be a result of some app(s) you have installed, or related to your coverage. Did thr problem start after having each phone for some time?
I am working on ruling out an app. Weird thing is, I have had winmo for over 3 years in the same area with no probs. This is my first android. I am uninstalling an app at a time to figure out if it is one.
****Update****
So I uninstalled the ESPN Scorecenter app. I haven't had a freeze in over 24 hrs. Guess I am going to have to find another app to follow the games while I am at church.
are you sure u r in area that has only Edge? have u try to Lagfix the fone?
goodluck.
This just happened to my wife's Vibrant. This reminds me of when I had the T-mobile Shadow, where suddenly, it would not be able to send or receive data or calls BUT the phone itself shows no indications of any signal problems. It's as if the cellular software component has frozen and so the signal bars are frozen to whatever state they were and thus tricking you into thinking everything is fine until you try to make a call or someone calls you on a landline wondering if your cell phone is dead.
I suspect it's due moving into a poor or zero signal area and the phone tries to make a data connection. I really have no idea how to fix this other than to hope there is a firmware update to resolve this. The only fix is to reboot the phone (flipping the phone to flight mode gets one to a state where you can't turn flight mode off... which indicates a lost of control to the cellular component).
I am consider finding a way to reboot the phone nightly, which will help if this happens overnight, but I wish there was a way to detect this more immediately so it can reboot when needed. Perhaps an app that monitors the carrier signal strength and if the signal level is perfectly the same for a long duration, then a lock up of the cellular component is suspected.
I'm on Vodafone UK, at some point this afternoon lost my signal, just had the no signal icon when I checked my phone.
I didn't change any settings, it was working fine received a couple texts, went to reply later and had no signal.
1st I tried going to settings->wireless settings and switching phone off and back on, no joy.
2nd tried Switching phone off and on, no joy
3rd tried settings->menu->all setting->personal->phone->network change network selection to maual, then select vodafone UK from list, still no joy
4th put network selection back to automatic, no joy.
5th turned data connection off no joy
Put my sim in girlfriends unlocked Nokia worked fine and I could make a call.
Returned sim to my phone.
I have noticed it will stay on no signal for ages, then will be trying to find a signal, will appear to have found just a phone signal (full strength) but attempting to make a call will just sit on the dialling screen for ages but never connect and then gives up without an error message after about 40 seconds. My data connection is off when it finds a signal, if I switch it back on it seems to be trying to connect GPRS then after a while back to no signal. Leaving it alone when it appears to have found a signal it stays for anywhere between a few seconds and minutes before going back to no signal.
Sorry my post isn't easier to read, been up since 4am getting tired now, and my phone is doing my head in.
Just to stress again my phone went from working to not just sitting on the table no settings changed or anything. Please help
I had a similar problem to this after flashing a ROM. My signal will be ok for an hour or 2 then disappear, never to return. If I switch 3G off it seems to solve it for me.
Me too
Xenton, I'm on VF UK with 1.72 ROM, and also have random signal drop outs. It happens even when static in the rear part of my house where I can see for 30+ miles and must have line of sight to multiple masts. The coverage maps on VF's website say the phone should be getting good signal, but sometimes, as you say it drops out, to return soon, later, or (but only very occasionally) not at all. I hard reset my phone a short time ago, so I'm pretty sure it's down to the ROM/radio. I've the feeling it's something we just have to live with, unless we wait (forever?) for the VF UK 3.14 ROM or install the WWE version.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. At work this morning my phone was working fine, then when I returned home same problems, no resets or changing to settings. All this makes me think it is a problem with VF, I have posted on the eforum but this is my second day without a reliable signal at home now after 2 years faultless coverage at home. If it keeps up, I may have to drive to a signal and call VF. Did you get your phone through VF, if so you should get onto them for a replacement or repair if it is your phone.
One other curious thing today at work I got some txts from VF which automatically change setting for mobile internet and picture messaging. They still worked fine at work, but I hadn't requested the settings be sent and the old ones worked fine, but then so do these new ones, just not at home, where I am mostly signal-less.
Xenton,
I used to be unable to send MMS's until I hard reset my phone. Oh, and despite requesting the MMS settings via the customer services and the VF web site, nothing ever arrived on any of the occasions it was supposed to.
I'm out of my initial contract after a year, so think I'll do well to get a new hand set. It's more of a relatively minor annoyance, as opposed to what seems like your more significant issue.
It only really happens a noticeable amount at home, so I’d put it down to something to do with the number of cells my phone could presumably see, and perhaps it getting ‘confused’ (?).
I’d be interested to hear what you find out on this, if you reach a resolution/find a solution.

This thread is about the famous 'data hanging' problem experience on SGS2's and how to address it on the Three Network in the UK. (Where the green arrow gets stuck on uploading with no download).
The problem from what I understand is that the handset constantly changes between GPRS, 3G, H and H+ to save power. Fast Dormancy is a setting the SGS2 uses to make this even more frequent.
The Three network is pretty flaky, and relies on 'borrowing' signal from other providers. This means EVEN MORE changes. The SGS2 doesn't deal with changes particularly well and due to the sheer number, often gets stuck when a new connection is formed. Cycling data connection will fix the problem temporarily
I get this problem with stock firmware a little and custom firmware a lot.
I do not want to be stuck on KE4 forever and I do not want Three's stupid games installed. I am very annoyed.
Update 19 August 2011
I spoke to Three today. I explained what happened and both the first line rep and his manager knew the problem that I have. They acknowledged that it is an issue that they are in talks with Samsung about trying to fix.
They told me that I can have an exchange, but that EVERY SINGLE ANDROID PHONE ON THEIR NETWORK has this problem.
However they still refused to give me a refund as I'm (well) out of my 14 day cooling off. I told the guy that under the Sale of Goods Act, if something doesn't do what it says on the box I can get a refund for an indefinite 'reasonable' amount of time.
I am getting a call back from his superior this week. Will report on progress, but this is big. Three are selling phones that they know don't work properly on a mass scale. I am going to use this to my advantage.
I bought mine sim free. Was on t mobile for a while and moved the 3 a couple of weeks ago. I've not noticed any problems as you've described. I once had this on O2 though and it turned out to be a localised network fault.
Are you using juicedefender? JD caused that same problem with my old Milestone, but so far it's fine on SGS2 on Three.

Hi guys. I have this phone on Three here in the UK and annoyingly, several times a day, the data stops working. It gets stuck with the uploading arrow in the bar (no download) and will just sit there.
Cycling the radio / flight mode brings it back to life for a few hours. Does anyone else on Three experience this? I need to know if mine is a faulty handset, or if its a network problem.
This happens regardless of which ROM I use.
Cheers

Mike, mine is exactly the same. It will absolutely fly for most of the day (even sometimes days at a time) and then it will just get stuck. Press and hold power to deactivate, and reactivate 'data network mode' and is well again till next time.
Seems to happen more when the phone has been sleeping for a prolonged time but not always the case. Doesn't appear to be any pattern. Changing ROM makes no difference here and I've quadruple checked my APN settings.

Known issue. Is not carrier dependent.Same here with Vodafone Greece. Some guys told that is hardware fault and some software.I think is software problem

It is the modem firmware. Once I updated to kf2 modem the problem dissapeared.

This happens to me most days, I have been rebooting to get back online. I will try the flight mode on and off to see if that helps.
But this is obviously a problem with Three network. I just thought it was Three`s sneaky way of throttling my "as much as you can eat" data plan.
I have KF2 modem and the issue continues.
I am glad to hear that others face the same problem. Is anyone in the UK on another network experienceing it? My friend is on Vodafone and we have the same ROM. He does not experience the issue at all.
Does anyone have a link to a thread which documents this issue?
I rely on Whatsapp and Email for communication, and this stops both from working. I might actually have to send my SGSII back if it continues
I'm on Three UK and have not experienced this problem yet. Shall let you know if/when I do.

Ive definately had this recently. didnt have it b4 though.
I have this problem. Stops my LiveProfile from working properly. Its very random too.
Can be quite annoying.
Hopefully it's a software problem rather than hardware. Only time and updates will tell.
I'm on o2 network with stock KE7 XEU firmware.
Same as op. Three and on ke7
Just went to kf2.
Will see what happens
If anyone manages to fix this, please share.
Incidentally, my bluetooth does a very similar thing with my car stereo. It just freezes and requires cycling off and back on.
I'm on three and get the same issue.
I also do the flight mode recycle.
I'm also using juice defender.
It's not a major issue for me more of an annoyance

I just remembered something you can try. Change the APN from ( i think) three.co.uk to just 3INTERNET.
I also having this problem from last week. Before I do not have this problem. May be network problem.

So far, this appears to be working!
(although I can no longer check my usage on the Three mobile website, but that's not too much of an issue)
I'll keep this thread updated with my progress.
Incidentally, I did not get this issue until I started flashing ROMs - or at least I didn't notice it.
I've been having this issue the past few nights on Orange. Fine during the day but at night the data stops.
Reboot the phone and it comes back. Just about to try KF2 modem to see if that helps.
yeh i have the same problem.... i can be going on internet browsing away then 4-5 pages in it just stops... and takes 1-2mins load and then just stops all together.

Please do let them know that a number of us are experiencing this. Although it doesn't seem limited to THREE, it definitely isn't on every handset.
Mine still hasn't done it since I changed APN as recommended above though.
Hi!
I have my Xperia S for about 3 months now (12w07, currently on FW .73), and I am 100% on original firmware, never rooted or flashed, never installed "pirated" software.
The problem:
My number is out of reach. Although the phone operates COMPLETELY normally (even receiving e-mail via wifi works, programs run smoothly), although the signal bars show FULL signal strength, signal reception & transmition do not work at all. When being called, it reacts EXACTLY as if I was in a NO signal area (the operator says unreachable, not switched off). This will continue until I restart the phone, otherwise the signal never comes back! Today, which was the second time that this happened to me, I was of-network for approximately 4+ hours! Darn!
Anyone else experienced this?
FYI, my SIM is an original MicroSIM, not a cut one...
Check your SIM, might be something wrong with that.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, and live in an area that shows strong reception levels on their coverage map. However, either my phone is defective (tried it on 2 different phones, same issue) or their map is WRONG! My question is ---- Would changing from the stock ROM to a different ROM here on XDA help improve my coverage, and if so, any suggestions?? Would I need a ROM, or just a radio change?
More Details if interested/needed.... My S2 randomly goes from having several bars of coverage, to absolutely no bars of coverage, and the dreaded 0 notification in the notification space. If I try to make a call, it goes to a screen that says emergency calls only... If I keep redialing (10 or more times) the number consecutively,it will usually show me a few bars and I can make the call. However, at work, I usually cant even do that, and it just wont work till I move to a different place (usually just a foot or two, at most!) I have missed many calls because the phone looses service. I used to have a sprint phone, and it worked fine without any issue, but the same cant be said for at&t.. Any help appreciated!!!!!!
