Wondering any way to disable the HSDPA as the signal in my area keeps switching from 3G to HSDPA.
I know the option to just enable 2G.
On Galaxy S II,there was an option from the dialer.

The problem is not the signal, my tab does the same and the signal is very good at my location. This seems to be a feature, maybe to increase battery life?

Because HSPA uses more power and some areas HSPA coverage is worse, and constant switching may drain the battery futher
I'd like to know if this is possible as well.
HSDPA is only active if there is data-traffic. If there is no data-traffic it will fall back to 3G. So just leave it as it is.

Hey, I have an USA T-Mobile Vibrant.
It is rooted and running the Vibrant edition of Darky's 9.3 Final ROM.
I am also using the latest overstock kernal and the honeycomb 2.0 theme from the I9000 forums.
Enough background info. This isn't really a problem as much as my curiosity.
My phone almost constantly is switching back and forth between 3G (UMTS) and H (HSDPA) on my data connection.
It doesn't seem to affect battery life or service too much (though H might be faster), so I'm not worried; but does anyone know what the deal is with this?

Mine has been doing this lately as well. It's only been happening since I installed my current ROM (Trigger 2.7).
Noticed this just now as well...might have something to do with the mods to show H or 3G.
I wonder if it has anything to do with signal strength. I know that shouldn't make a difference but I can't think of any other reason.

I would agree, but I went to my settings/ phone info/ signal page and the reason it was changing was because it was physically switching between UMTS and HSDPA.
Why? I have no idea.
I do live in a T-Mobile 4G enabled area, though I am not on their so called "4G plan".
I did notice that it did not have this switching problem on Bionix Frost-u2.
So, if anyone has some insight, please help us all understand

I was just watching my signal strength change and it doesn't seemed tied to the change from 3G to H.
For example, it would be around 67dBm and be on UMTS. Raise to up to around 75dBm and be on UMTS. Then it would switch to HSDPA and still be at 75dBm or sometimes lower down to 69-72dBm and still be on HSDPA.
So with that type of cross-over stats, I would be skeptical of that solution.
HSDPA is a temporary data link. If it was on continously the phone would have very poor battery life.
When network server has a data packet for your phone it 'pages' up your HSDPA capability. Your phone can also request HSPA to initiate a data transmission.
The HSPA paging process is similar to receiving and initiating a voice call.
If no more packets have qued at their server or received from your phone after some period of time it will revert to normal 3G battery saver cycling. It has to be re-paged up to reinitiate HSPA data link. The wake up HSPA function does add some initial delay.
So is there a way to force it to stay on HSPA while tethered, for example? (Or always)
I have UK SGS II and I am on the bell netowrk in Canada and I am finding that the 3G/H+ signal randomly drops and I lose connection every now and then. I am always in aread with strong reception as well. Any possible solutions?

I have the same but it doesn't drop anything, in area's where there is H+ coverage it will show H+ otherwise it just shows 3G.
Maybe you want to enable 3G only on your device so it won't switch between all the time.

I have the same problem here in Argentina. It seems that one of our local operators does not support the 3G/HSDPA of this phone (maybe because it is from europe ? ). Did you try to use the browser and surf the internet? I doesn't work here. Strange, because for 3G we use the 850Mhz spectrum.
What I noticed is that the 3G/H icon at the top is constantly changing from 3G to H and viceversa, even if I stay in the same location...

Hi, I looked for this in all motorola forums but I couldn't find any real solution.
It seems the latest update to my home network (HSDPA to HSPA) is not well received by my phone. My battery is draining really fast since this upgrade.
Is there a way to enable ONLY HSDPA? I mean, HSPA is great for downloading and uploading, but battery life is really poor. I had very good battery life with HSDPA and I'd like to set my phone to this type of data connection.
Somebody told me to look for some entries in build.prop but I didn't find anything. Does someone know how to do it? Thanks

Hey, thanks for your help. Well, I'm not suffering battery draining for any other reason. I don't want to use 2G networks only. Just want to change HSPA to HSDPA. That way, I'll go back to having the usual battery consumption.
Any other suggestion?
HSPA is a term that encompasses High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) - if your network was using HSDPA, it was an HSPA network.
Enhanced HSPA (HSPA+) is an enhancement to HSPA that enables download speeds of up to 21Mbps and beyond, up from the typical 7.2Mbps. The Atrix is a 14.4Mbps compatible HSPA+ device.
So you saying you don't want HSPA, but want HSDPA doesn't make any sense. Do you want to disable the increased upload speeds? (HSUPA) or the HSPA+ speed enhancements? (up to 14.4Mbps) I know Samsung have an option to disable certain parts of the network through a hidden network, no idea about the Atrix though.

Yes, I want to disable HSUPA (what makes it HSPA) since it's killing my battery. I found a lot of info on Samsung phones but I don't know how to do it in a Motorola mobile
Sorry to bother again. Any solution yet to prevent phone from going on HSPA and stay in HSDPA? Thanks in advance
Just for your information, I found some build.prop tweaks to set HSDPA only, but none of them worked. Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong?

BUMP... Still trying to set phone to HSDPA only... Any thoughts?
it can be done, it took me three weeks to figure this out. we had a flood come through here about three weeks ago and it did something to just one antenna on the tower, i dont know what it did but it prevented anybody using a phone on hsupa from using their internet on their phone, i called att multiple times on the issue with no fixing of the tower that was transmitting a bad hsupa signal, the same antenna was transmitting a good "3g" signal or "hsdpa" both of my 4g phones would work anywhere else in the world except for at my house where the bad hsupa signal was. so i knew i had to find a way to downgrade to hsdpa to get my phones operational again, no help from att as to when or even if they would fix the towers. att thought i was crazy because i was the only one complaining about it because everyone on 3g was unaffected, probably only a handful of houses on this one antenna, att locks you out of your phone from being able to go to 3g or 2g, all automatic. 3 weeks of this crap then one day i remembered when the atrix first came out hsupa was locked out, remember all the scoff att got for that one, so here's what i did to shut off hsupa and get my phone back running again:
1. make sure your bootloader is unlocked - not sure if this will brick your phone if it isn't
2. download these radio packages http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V0LDOGFJ
3. flash the one radio that says att shipping radio or something like that through rsd lite (this is the original radio that shipped with the atrix) and don't worry its safe to flash if you are on gingerbread..
4. reboot your phone and you will be locked into 3g or hsdpa thus locking out hsupa
5. if you want to turn hsupa back on just flash the other file
this method worked great for me and got my phone working great again and no hsupa for me anymore until att gets the tower fixed which may be never since i'm probably the only one on this particular antenna with a hsupa phone.
all we need now is a nifty dev that can hack one of these radios to shut off automatic network selection for those of us that are stuck on it.

Well, thanks a lot. I was able to set phone to HSDPA only by flashing the radio you provided. I can't test if it really decreases battery drain but I'm going to try tomorrow with regular use. Thanks a lot!

I can see why he called it hspa since this is the information displayed by the phone vs when the phone is on hsdpa. or what I call 3.5 g

Hey pal, your method worked! After flashing the old radio, the phone is on HSDPA only and battery life is way better, back to Froyo times. I don't really care about the enhanced upload. Download speeds are as good as they were on HSPA.

i have the nexus 4 and i have a big problem..
were i live the signal is not very strong so the phone continually switch betweeen 3g and hsdpa and the battery is very very high!
the signal switch 3g/hsdpa hsdpa/3g every 15 seconds.. u can immagine the battery life..
the question is..
can i disable only hsdpa and keep 3g?
if i put only 2g (avaiable in settings) i wouldn't be able to use internet..

And I seriously doubt you wish to use 3G only. 3G is very slow, compared to HSPA speeds. I do not think any of the operators actually limits the speed to 3G speed (384 Kbit/s, for comparison, HSDPA is 14 Mbit/s).

i know that ,but, my network operator already have very poor connection , no more than 512Kbit/s , i use it only for chat on mobile data ,

btw, i have a question...: does ''use only 2g networks'' saves some battery?? b'cuz i activate that if iam over my limt, bcuz my provider reduce my surfspeed to 64kbits/s and i thought, that didnt affect my surf speed and saves battery?? right or not?

Using 2G does save battery in some cases. In city areas, it is not noticeable. From my own experience, I can say, that if I use 2G, the signal is strong all the time (operator's 2G antenna radius is larger than 3G), however with 3G, it goes up and down at my home. If signal is strong all the time, phone has to use less battery to keep connected. If signal is weak, phone needs to use more battery to keep the connection.
Long story short - Yes, it can save battery, however in city conditions, it is hard to notice.

yeah you are right.. 2G network consumes very less battery than 3G
