This thread that I've revamped from my Evo 4G days, hoping to share some of the love with newer users. Over the time I've been on android, I've learned a few simple things that can greatly assist in the battery life of our wonderful smartphones.
If you read the thread and like the tips, have a new one to suggest, or have a revision, please post it.

My tips for good battery life:
Tips for Non-Rooted users
1. Turn off all radios when not in use.
(gps, Bluetooth, wifi, data, 4g) Use a widget like the default HTC power widget, Switchpro, or a similar app from the market. The 3D's updated Sense 3.0 allows users to access these radios and other settings from the notification pulldown menu, , under the "Quick Settings" tab. The radios of the phone draw power if on even if the user isn't actually utilizing the radio's functions. A radio searching for signal (if you are in a low-signal area) drains more than a radio with good signal, so again, turn 'em off when you aren't using 'em.
To manually turn off radios without a toggle, go to menu>settings>wireless & networks.
Wifi uses less battery than 3G, so use wifi when you can.
2. Juice Defender is one of my favorite apps. Basically it controls your data for you to maximize life.
More explanations are on their page, search it on the market for free, or upgrade for more features.

Note that for me at least, juice defender likes to deny apps data privileges whether you allow them or not, so screen on = data on works best for me.
3. I love live wallpapers, and I’ve always been a fan of pixel zombies, but they are really only good for showing off due to their battery drain.
4. Go to menu<settings<wireless & networks<mobile networks<disable always on mobile data.

5. Set your screen timeout to something that fits you.
This will prevent your phone from staying on when you don’t manually turn off the screen. Also with this, manually turn off your screen when you’re done with your phone.
Menu>Settings>Display>Screen Timeout
I use 30 seconds.
6. Task killers used to be the shiz, but no longer.
Here is the ultimate, in depth, graphically assisted, explanation by the famous Fresh ROM's chef, Flipz. Shortly, in light of recent testing, really don’t do anything but force apps that the android OS needed to be open, and thus didn’t close, to re-open. So try not using them, unless for stuff like trying to figure out why your phone isn’t sleeping with system panel. You really won’t notice a performance difference, and the adverse effects you aren’t seeing will stop
+=+ A good alternative is the application SystemPanel Pro. It has a free version, but I highly reccomend purchasing the paid app. It basically monitors everything going on with your phone's usage both in real time an in terms of usage history. If your battery is draiging fast, it tells you what app was doing it, how much it was doing it, and allows you to stop it.
7. I'm sure you have all heard around that your phone isn't "sleeping".
This is referring to the phone's "awake" time, hence the name. When you go to Menu>Settings>About Phone>Battery, you can compare the two numbers, "up time" vs. "awake time." Generally, up time refers to the amount of time since the last reboot. The "awake time" is how long the screen has been active. The problem is, a lot of the time, due to the endless possibilities of inconsistencies between apps/ROMs/kernels/phones, the phone will not go to "sleep", drawing power proportionate to the screen being in use when it reality the phone is sitting idle.
If you compare these numbers, and they are the same, or if you note the difference, turn off the screen for a minute, then re-check and they are the same, then your phone is not sleeping.
One solution is to reboot.
Usually, SystemPanel will show an app that has gone "rouge" and is keeping your phone awake.
-This is done by hitting menu>settings>monitoring enabled. Then after some time has passed, ht menu>monitoring>history>change tab to top apps, and see if anything is above, say, 2-4%.
Uninstall applications/reinstalling them slowly, checking after every install to see what is causing it is one tedious but surefire solution.
Lastly,
Follow these steps that I have discovered almost always work.
1. Reboot phone.
2. Instantly upon reboot, as soon as you gain control, open up some type of monitor/taskkiller
3. "kill all" tasks on startup; about 5 times in quick succession should do the trick.
4. Turn off the screen and leave it for about five minutes.
5. Check the up time v. awake time and see if they are the same.
6. If they are, repeat steps 1-5. If they are different, you are good.
8. Our good friend sn0b0ard noticed that the 3D's battery contacts *could* be problematic.
Here's a link to his thread, but basically he explains how the leads to the battery can be kind of loose, which potentially can cause random reboots (if the contacts separate) and/or slow charging. The fix is simple: slide some paper or a piece of a rubber band between the battery and the wall opposite the leads. Toss him a thanks if it helps you out
9. Apps and Combinations to watch out for!
-Facebook for HTC Sense- Tries to sync live feed all the time, HIGHLY recommend unchecking this box, as it creates a massive draw on data
-Skype- This app reportedly (I've seen it myself) likes to sync random data and open up the network for fun. Sign out of app when not in use to fix
Root Tips LIVE
Tips for Rooted users:
1. Try out custom kernels.
By going to the EVO 3D Android Development section of the forums, you can see all of the different kernels being developed. These allow for all kinds of modifications like underclocking the CPU and undervolting, both of which save battery. To see how to use them, read the FAQ's in each thread's OPs.
Here is a great guide to custom kernel's by mroneeyedboh.
2. Use SetCPU in compliance with whatever your custom kernel allows.
This site will explain the basics of SetCPU: http://www.setcpu.com/
-Profiles from SetCPU should usually involve these for battery life optimization:
-Screen off at the minimum clock speed for both, with the max raised on level if sluggishness is apparent
-A temperature greater than “X”
-General power related profiles that lower cpu speed at lower battery levels
-Here are my SetCPU profiles: 1 , 2 , 3
-My profiles change a lot as time goes by, because different kernel creators recommend different settings. I suggest reading up on whatever kernel you are using to gather settings.

NOTES:
*Some apps or processes begin to run at startup and keep the phone awake. These apps are not detected by things like spare parts or system panel, unless sometimes represented in the "system" process, in which case its usage will be unusually high.
This shouldn't take more than three repeats, and if it does, you need to factory reset, and slowly add apps back to see what's causing the problem.
___--- When it comes to actually "calibrating" one's battery, there are a couple of methods floating around. The method I first learned is to charge the phone all the way, boot into recovery immediately, and "wipe battery stats". Then reboot quickly, and run your phone all the way to death without charging it, then charge it all the way without interrupting it, and you should be good to go. Do this when changing ROMs/kernels for best results.
----When it comes to people claiming 20 plus hours of moderate/heavy use out of their current setup or other ridiculous absurdities, consider my position: No matter what you do, the Evo battery is the Evo battery. You can tweak it and customize it with kernels, ROMs, and settings, but none of that will turn it into a car battery. The main problem (besides a false sense of pride) that leads to these reports is the misunderstanding of what the usage levels are, so here’s my best summary:
* *Light usage – Phone screen actually on for maybe 0-2 hours. Things like a few texts, some emails, 20 minutes web browsing, etc.
* *Moderate usage – You watched a few youtube videos or similar apps, sustained web browsing, hundreds of texts, some games. Hours range from about 2-5 of screen on
* *Heavy usage – LOTS of video watching and games, 3D pics or video, or some high def gaming/movie watching for at least an hour to an hour and a half in total, with lots of emails and texts, browsing, and other app shenanigans. 5+ hours
*I’m sure everyone doesn’t agree with all these numbers, but this is most likely a good average of what powerusers think. All specific hourage may vary due to differences in phones, batteries, ROMs, and kernels… Which also means that most battery comparisons are pointless; it’s only what you can improve on that counts!
I’ll update this whenever I see good stuff, people remind me, or I remember/come across things I do.

How are you charging it? USB to computer charging leads to high wake times. Any rouge apps?
Getting hot is normal this early on.
No I'm charging with the HTC charger. Let me try updating the phone maybe that will fix it.

You need to update, I know everyone is scared about not getting root, but without the update you will have battery issues. Keep fighting on HTC facebook page, we will get the unlock soon enough

Yea I updated and phone is sleeping now. I can live without root for a couple.weeks and i have a spear evo to keep my flashing addiction satisfied till this gets root

The tips are all optional. If you can't live without live wallpapers, then by all means, use them. However, many users don't know about radios, etc. Very few people need bluetooth, 4G, and wifi all at the same time while the screen is off. I believe that part of having a smartphone is the luxury of being able to make informed decisions about the functions of your device to find your own individual perfect balance between performance and battery life.

Not necessarily. You can still make a call or two, maybe write a few smses but basicly don't use your phone and it will have amazing battery life.
I don't have 3d just yet but I'm guessing with that big of a battery (1730mAh) it should easily go through at least 10-15h with moderate to heavy usage.

I've had the galaxy s2 for about 2 months now and am enjoying it. I recently noticed a bit of a change in the battery life I am getting though, I used to be able to get it to last 2 days quite comfortably and now it seems to be struggling. In terms of recent downloads, I've installed the google+ app most recently, perhaps it's that? I've attached the battery usage screenshot.
I haven't really used the phone for anything so it has been sat idle for about a day and is now on like 64% battery. Just wanted to check this was normal? I swear it used to be better.
Any help would be fantastic.
You needed to post the Graph with the chart. Anyway, download 'Better Battery Stats' and see under Wakelocks what's causing the Awakes while screen is off. It's a fantastic app.

looks like its only really facebook causing any wakelock damage?
any advice / tips? and does anyone know of the most battery efficient to run the phone, any specific custom roms or nightlies?

Yep, that's definitely Facebook. If you have 2 days with it - it's very nice result, take it easy. You're able to improve battery life by closing facebook agent only
which rom version have you installed?Custom Rom?
try this one *#*#4636#*#*, there is counter where you can see how many times apps started.
Set auto sync off, and take look at your email client(push). Also set samsung apps sync to off.

As you can see from his first post (the pic with the battery stat), his phone was, most of the time, at deep sleep or using 200/500 mhz, in other words, his display was ONLY 18% of the time on and because of that his android system was the big battery consumption, which doesn't consume as much as the display.
As you know, the thing that drains your battery the most, is the screen.
So if you want to get this kind of results like jakecarberry, don't play with your device too much only open the phone when you really need it: voice calls/sms and some facebook, and you will get same results.
When I act like that with my phone I get same results but when I decide that today is downloading-games-and-apps-day, and installing them, I can get max 10 hours.
btw, does anyone know how to turn off the Maps like jakecarberry has, which took 5%.
I never open maps and still it is working.
Please don't advise to uninstall the app.

Believe me, I did search for that and read almost 10 threads.
But there is no real answer, even if I freeze with Titanium backup it is still running.
Just finished charhing from 9% to 100% in 3 hours, is it normal time?

If you have frozen it then it must have stopped. Otherwise, go to, Settings-Applications-Manage Applications- All- Maps- Clear Data. And make sure that you have Signed Out from Latitude, that thing does drain battery badly.

You know what ? Its a damned good idea. Too many people are cluttering the development thread. Now since no one else has posted a question related to CM7, I have one:
Can someone help me figure out what is eating my battery on standby ?? I don't have that power hungry facebook app and I did some tweaks found ( via SetCPU ) that I found in the development thread, but it made very little difference. The thing is, I just have no idea how to monitor what is using all the power. How did they figure out that facebook was causing a big drain ?
Do you use google latitude?
A very good thing is use BetterBatteryStats to really understand where the CPU is being keept awake. The embed battery stats for example only showed me Android OS as a culprit, but gave me no further details..

i have heard CPU Spy is great for figuring out whats using up your resources. dont know as i tend to get pretty good battery life (16+ hours with exchange push enabled)

Had anyone else had trouble getting the hbogo app to work on CM7? I can login and try to play a video but get audio with no video. The hbogo splash screen plays perfectly when playing a video for the first time.
Edit: Just found a bug report for this exact issue. (issue 163, sorry, I can't post links.)

When I receive a call, my phone goes to a lock screen, I have to swipe the lock screen to answer. On stock, when I got a call, the screen woke up in the dialer app and all I had to do was press the answer button. For the life of me I can't seem to find a setting to change this, any input appreciated.

Do you by chance have Tango installed? I had it for all of 2 days and noticed my battery died about twice as fast as it normally would. I usually get a good 16+ hours easy with moderate use but was only getting about 9 with the same usage. Did a quick google search and verified tango was the culprit. Uninstalled and back to normal. I don't know if this applies to any other video call apps but might be worth looking into.

I am having problems using Titanium and taking screenshots, think it is something related...

Wifi connectivity drives me nuts on cm7. Had to turn it off and on in order to connect. Someone mentioned to edit propbuild. Idk what that means.

You need to go into Setting/CyanogenMod settings/Application, check "Use internal storage" then reboot your phone and it should be back to how it was before.
Betterbatterystats seems to have found some interesting things. Phone on for 1hr and ten minutes.
Under partial wakelocks:
Lightflow: 1hr10m3s
AlarmManager: 58m13s
JuiceDefender:55m44s
There is more ( I can provide screenshot if required ), but those are the top three.
I do find this a little odd. Juice defender was just installed the other day and I can't see how it would cause any problems. Battery was a bit crappy before and didn't get any better/worse. I froze lightflow the other day and battery drain was about the same.

I got watchdog and Im able to detect what cause battery drain while on standby. Its the "suspend" service running on the background with 90% cpu usage ... as soon as I heard the warning from watchdog, I wake my phone and that "suspend" stop immidately. Happen to me since I got this rom cm7. It didn't happen before on alien...

EDIT: upon further investigation I have narrowed down AlarmManager as causing a lot of partial wake locks, but I dont have any alarms set and have not synced my calendar and have the Calendar alerts turned off. However Suspend is showing as a problem as well.
I'm using BetterBatteryStats, SpareParts, and the stock battery manager to try and track this down.
Well, after eliminating Lightflow and turning off Beautiful Widgets small weather, things are improving. Instead of losing 5% per hour on standby, it is now down to about 3%. Juice defender and Alarm manager are still at the top of the list, In 2hrs and 18min I have:
Alarm manager 33m12s
Juice defender 27m56s
So, Juice Defender is next on the list. The funny part is I know that CM7 is causing this. Battery used to last near forever on standby.

Ever since I upgraded from pre-beta 4 to Beta, my phone has had two horizontal deadzone lines on the touchscreen. This persists from ROM to ROM, and is getting to be annoying. I have no warranty, as I bought the phone from a guy who won it in a contest, unlocked it and brought it to another carrier.
Is there any chance that this is a software issue, and can be repaired?

Alarm Manager is no longer a problem. Phone now sleeping correctly. I disabled background date, topped off the battery and verified via Betterbatterystats. Now if we could disable background data while it sleeps and re-enable it when you wake it up then we'd be set.

I've had my GS II for about a week, and the battery life has been pretty stellar, except for days where I work at the office. For some reason, there, the battery drains at about 2x the rate than in other areas. A very similar thing happened with my Captivate, but the battery lasts longer with the GS II.
However, today, at around 1PM, my phone started heating up so that it was hot to the touch, and the battery drained 60% in about 1.5 hours. Something went terribly wrong. And even plugged in, it was draining faster than it could charge!
How can I find out what happened? I don't want this to happen again.
The only thing I did was listen to a podcast with BeyondPod, but I do that every day at work over lunch. So, nothing new in my utilization.
Any ideas appreciated!

Thanks, but GPS was not on. Neither was WiFi. Just Bluetooth. It's the same settings I have every day at work, because Tasker sets my settings automatically based on cell tower location.
What's your android OS utilization look like in battery stats? Could be the mysterious bug on Samsung devices...

No, the screen before that...it will say display, android OS, android system, cell standby, etc.. what percent does it say for android OS?

I had a similar experience today. I was talking on the phone when the top of the phone got really hot. Like it hurt my ear to hold the phone against it. And then the phone rebooted. Since then it's been running phone. Need to figure out what caused it though. Might be a similar issue. But my battery life has been pretty good though. Can easily make it through a day with moderate to heavy use.
I am running CM 7.1. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. But even if it did, there is no way I am going back to stock.

Same here. My battery just drained to death. And "Android OS" was taken care 80% of my battery. What the hell...
Had the same thing happen to me yesterday. I am stock rooted.

Unfortunately, AOS often falsely reports high. Sometimes high AOS usage is fine, sometimes it's not.
I've gotten some of my best battery life with AOS at 60%.
Can't tell what happened to you without some statistics.

Yeah, this sounds very similar to what happened to me, but with stock ROM.
Two follow-on questions:
1. If it's ROM-independent, then could it be something in the hardware that's short-circuiting? Like... the cellular chipset, or perhaps the modem firmware?
2. Can you explain what about CM 7.1 is so superior to the stock rom, which I'm finding pretty fantastic at the moment?

Unfortunately, I don't think I can go back in history, can I? It's a new day, with a new charge... and I'm imagining that the battery meters reflect today's activity, not yesterday's disaster...
Sh1t happens. That's the way it was with multiple Windows Mobile phones I had in the past and it is obviously the way it is with multiple Android phones I have now. Usually a quick reboot of the phone will resolve the problem. As long as it didn't happen again persisitently, you are fine.
The cause is somewhere some app or service was stuck in a bad place that uses a lot of CPU or data or both. This will cause phone heats up and battery darin faster. Unless you have full dev environment and logging on the phone, it is virtually impossible to track it down.

Yeah, but does this kind of thing happen to iPhones and WinPho phones? Just curious. I am trying to convince friends & family that with the GS II, Android has finally reached parity with iOS. Perhaps not quite yet... ??
i never had battery drain but once in a while I do notice my phone gets hot on the back cover in between the SGS logo and the camera while I'm using it. If I put it down for a bit, it cools off. I figured it was just hot from use and I never thought anything more of it.

What make you think GS2 is any better than other Android phones in this regard? Anyone can make a mistake or two in programming and it is impossible to write bug free code.
Remember, latest Android Gingerbread OS is 2.3.7 and we are at 2.3.4. There are a lot of bug fixes (and new bugs) in each incremental release from Google alone. On top of that you have Samsung's customization code and various apps you installed.

It does happen to iPhones for sure. We switched from blackberry devices to the iPhone, at work, three months ago. We had five different devices experience similar heat and battery issues. The cause is typically from apps or services that sync with online data.

I've heard varying reports of how long peoples' batteries last, anywhere from 9 hours to 3 days. But what seems to be the common theme is that if you use your phone pretty frequently, you'll get maybe 10 hrs, but if you use the phone sporadically and not for long periods of time, you can expect the phone to last through the day and even maybe the next. But with mine I've found that the battery on average will last me maybe 10 hours, but that's with slight to almost no use. From what people have said online, the screen is what sucks up battery, but when I check with GSam Battery Monitor, my screen never seems to break 30% of my battery use. Apps are what usually take up ~45% of my battery. What's up with this? I don't wanna have to buy that stupid Mugen case, because it apparently sucks, but there are literally no other options to extend my battery... any advice? Will post screenshots. Thanks!

It looks normal to me. Usually the people that are saying they get good battery life are the ones that are on a custom Rom and a custom kernel. From my findings the stock Rom especially with the net updates battery life seems to be worse with each update. One really good combination I have run that yields amazing battery life is CM11 and crpalmers kernel. That combination will give amazing battery life. It also depends on what you use your phone for. Judging by your screen shots thing look pretty normal. I would try giving battery guru a go in the market of you want to get some more juice. Let it learn your habits and it will help with you battery life.
You also have to remember as the device ages and you recharge the battery you can't expect it to remain fantastic like the first day you got it. Like anything else they wear down over time and can only go through so many charging cycles.
Or it may just be your battery starting to go bad. Its hard to pin point what may be wrong. It may be as simple as a rogue app. Try some of the suggestions I mentioned above and post back to let us know how your doing. If your not rubbing a custom Rom I recommend switching to one. They are packed with features and the battery life is generally better.
Anyways good luck. Post back if you have any more questions.

100% agree. Especially with the updates leading to worse battery life.
I recently switched to the DNA from an S4. Unlocked and S off'd. Flashed 4.4.2 Rom and immediately noticed how awful battery was in comparison to my Samsung. I actually flashed an older jellybean Rom with Sense 4+ and now I'm experiencing battery life as good as my S4, even though the S4 has a larger battery and newer hardware.

Thanks for the info guys i'll keep that stuff in mind. I've tried several times to S-Off and flash a custom ROM but every time I try, firewater or rumrunner or whatever im using that time always says 'connection failed.' I've been unable to find any fix for why it's failing, so i've kind of given up. Any chance you guys can link to any super simple instructions?
Like I honestly don't understand temproot and those things. thanks!

Getting a little stuck... Did the Weaksauce part, and downloaded the firewater file... what do I do now? I copied firewater to my SD card, what command window do I use? I really don't get exactly what to do...

I really don't know how to explain it any better than I did in that thread. On page 2, I wrote a complete step by step..the file goes into your sdk folder and then you run the command while in fast boot..I posted links and all in that thread. I don't know how to help further.
