sd flip flop - Motorola Droid X2

Quick question what happens if I do this n switch my sd card with a larger new one if sd goes haywire thanx to all in advance

Shouldn't make any difference. Change it and things should be the same. Assuming you copy everything over from the old one.

I changed the 8gb out to a 16gb and had no problems just do exact copy !!!

Curious why a copy is needed? What is stored on ext sd card after flip flop that is necessary?
I have eclipse running which has that integrated into it.
Another question ...when I download an app and go to.manage application and press move to sdcard. Is it moving the app to the actual external sdcard? I don't see a file for the app in root explorer there and I thought it should have been. I get an initial error on first press of move to sd card but second press always goes through
---------- Post added at 01:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:32 AM ----------
Okay so i've just noticed that if I unmount sdcard in storage setting I cannot move any apps to sd. I also can't seem to delete anything from .androidsecure cuz I can't mount it as rw. There are things in there I haven't used in months and aren't even on my phone.
So where I read that now we can use our ext sd card for app storage and allow for more internal storage phone space it was wrong. I still cannot put my apps on my REAL sdcard for some reason. Even the ones that say they support being moved to sd card. Im confused
Sorry not trying to hijack here I just don't understand benefit of this flip flop now that I see I can't even put my apps on it at all?
Cuz my app will only "move to sd" when I mount sd card((which is really actual internal at this point)) which doesn't save me any space on the 4gb available ...I am very confused
Sorry ...hope.someone can explain me something if I messing up something. I would LOVE a pm explaining all this lol

[Q] Move/Install App to Internal USB Storage (Not to External SD)

Hi,
Is it possible to move an existing app or install new app to USB Storage (comes along with SGS2) and not to the external SD card (i dont have though as 16 Gb is enough for me )......
When ever i install an app its getting installed in System storage (only 2 GB max available and i already have nearly 1.3 gb filled up there ).......so is it possible to move the stuffs from there to the internal USB STORAGE.........i checked app2sd but seems to be its poitning to the external sd card.....
also, when i went to applications and clicked "Move to SD card" its shwoing as not enough memory......
i have tried searching entore XDA but could find a viable solution.....
@JJEgan: Please do not tell me to search the net/ xda forums as a reply to this question (which u have already given to others http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1135233) as i have already searched a lot and tried different apps...but none could give me what i am really looking for.......
Any help on this is much appreciated........
Hmm, when I select Move to SD, it moves it. No problem at all. Puts them on the internal one.
Unreleated but might be helpful

When I moved some of my apps to sdstorage (internal) I did not know that if you do a factory reset it wipes your internal sdstorage (i.e. sdcrad), so make sure you do a backup to computer if you need to factory reset your device.
ATB
Oh wow. Which 'factory reset' function are we talking about in that case? You know, the one through the dialer, or the one in the options menu. I know, they do exactly the same but.. I noticed that if I select wipe data/factory reset in the recovery menu, it does not touch my SD cards at all. Let it be internal or external. Weird huh?
I am not too sure...

The thing is that I keep fiddling with my phone and my internal sdcard got wipe a few times. I know that the dialer will delete your stuff on the internal sdcard, but I think the one on the options menu also delete the sdcard, but I am not 100% sure and dont really want to try again just incase. So unless someone can confirm it better do a backup to PC.

Am i missing something here folks, sorry to hijack this thread i dont wanna start a new one and it's a similar issue i have, when i connect the cable from my phone to the usb on my laptop i cant see my SD card (even after i have unmounted sd card)
what am i doing wrong here, all i wanna do is to copy music and files onto my external SD without having to physically taking the SD card out of the phone.
cheers
Unmount? You must've meant mount. You mean when you select Mount USB from the status bar, the external sd won't show up? What about the internal one, can you access that one?

when i had my HD2 running CM7 when i connected the cable from phone to laptop the sd card folder came up straight away.

Guys,
Sorry to disturb you in your conversation
but, i think my question is not answered or i didnt understood the replies.....can any one of you pls help me
i am having the same problem as smilingcruel. keeps saying not enough memory. Am i actually trying to save to an external sd and is there a setting i should change? running out of space quick.
Hi.
I have the same problem, but it seems no one has answered the question yet.
Is there any solution ?
Maybe the problem has been addressed in some other thread... thanks in advance for your help.
David
I have the same problem that when I say move to SD it tells me "Failed to move application: Not enough Memory" but when I look on the sd card I see it there.
Also, it seems not all can be moved to the internal sd card. I was hoping to do something like link2sd does but it requires you to repartition the SD card and I'm not how to do that with the internal one.
link2sd rocks for creating links for just about any app on your sd card.
Not sure if this would help. I have been having d same prob previously.
But once i inserted a SD card (regardless of wat d size is), i'd able to send d apps to the internal memory through app2sd. (not d external sd in fact)
No answer yet ?
How can we move our app from internal phone memory ( 2 gb ) to out USB Storage (30 gb internal )
Move to SD option says that "Failed to move application. No SD card"
I have enough memory on my phone (32 bg ) and I don't want to add an external SD card , how can I sole this problem ?
thanks
So there is any solution to install apps on USB Storage? Because when I move them by App2sd to external SD they disappeared after rebot.
I'm using Omega v19.2 Jelly Bean 4.1.2 ROM, but probably it's the same problem on stock.
I am having this issue also, but in Jelly Bean.
I used a 4GB SD card to flash my phone with Chameleon ROM (4.1.2 JB) and the SmartROM kernel, when the phone was setup and working I removed the SD card.
Before when I used Resurrection Remix (also 4.1.2 JB) that was not an issue, but then again I had never used a SD card with it.
Now I can not install anything because of lack of space and I can not move any app to the Internal "USB" partition... even though there is 5 GB free.
I did format the entire phone (using CWM Recovery, formatted system, data, etc, etc) before I installed Chameleon.
What gives?
This thread went quiet without a resolution, I have the same issue on 4.1.2, with my internal sd 12gb partition being empty and apps not moving either saying failed or not enough space.
With an external sd card mounted it moves them there, but after a reboot as others mentioned they now longer function.
Any help would be appreciated!
Parition works with CM9 and CM10.2 oddly not sammy 4.1.2

[Q] Phone Memory.. confused about

1. I'm a little confused about the phone's memory..
So there is the SD card, and there is the 10gb memory.
If I use clockwork recovery.. and perform a full wipe/reset/factory, does everything in the 10gb internal memory card get deleted?
Or can I keep files in it?
2. Shouldn't we have a question forum about now??
I mean.. its about time.. more and more people are getting the phone everyday.. come on..
AFAIK there are two SD Cards, one come pre-installed from HTC which gave us 10Gb after reverse some 6Gb for the phone/system and the phone identified it as SDCard. The second one will be add-on as per user's option and the phone will identified it as SDCard2 or Ext_Sd card
Perform a full wipe/reset/factory will not delete your files on that 10Gb SDCard and/or the ext-sdcard that you may have had put in
Others may know better and may corrected me if I'm wrong

Your phone has 16 gigs of memory (when they say 16 its usually truly about 14 gigs), about 2 are allocated for installing programs, however their data can be allocated to other places such as the external SD or internal SD. For example if you install a game with a big data file such as asphalt 6 the main program is installed in the 2 gig part, most programs should be more that a few kilobytes to 10-20 megs max. Their data however can be installed onto the SD card if the program allows it. If you have root, you can force even programs that do not allow SD card allocation to be installed on to the SD card, but this may ending up messing up the program...for example if you install a widget onto the sd card it will stop working. It needs to be in that 2 gig partition
older phones like the Nexus one only had about 256 megs of free space for programs, so such things as sd ext. partitions were made in the external SD cards to make the program and phone think that this is an extention/part of that 256 partition that can be used as programs thereby increasing space to install programs.
-External SD, is an SD card you put in your phone
-Internal SD is a partition of that 16 gigs and is allocated to save things on such as videos, music etc. the
-sd ext partition is a partition that you could make on an SD card to think that it is where the programs can be installed and used (not their data, just the main program itself, problem with this is if you're using a slow SD card, some programs can have lag) in our amaze since we have 2 gigs to store programs, there is little worry about running out of space, unless you're insalling like 500 programs...then you could partition your sd card to be sd ext
there are sd ext1, sd ext2, sd ext3 and sd ext4 that I know of...To learn more about those search on google. I forget exactly what the differences are, and not all roms/phones are compatible with all the sd ext types.
hope I didn't confuse you.

not true, performing factory reset from settings menu, gives you the option of deleting both internal and external sd, you MUST uncheck those boxes if you wish to have those data remain intact and not deleted.
dude thanks.. but that was a huge long explanation..
I sort of knew that.. im no noob, but you can post that on General.. I'm sure it would answer a lot of noobish questions..
Im just asking if the non user SD gets deleted.. I come from another phone which the only SD was the one you put in..
So this whole thing of 2 memories (inside and outside) is confusing to me..
So just to be clear, with a wipe.. does the internal SD get erased, yes, or no?
(and thanks.. i thanked u both)
Will it considered abusing the thanks button if I thank you for thanked me (j/k)
If you use clockwork recovery, 10GB internal space is untouched unless you want to format them. Full/Factory wipe deletes the internal SD space of user data and apps.
I usually keep my personal files during full/factory/reset while I need to do flashing.
But no one knows It's always better to backup any important files

if you go under settings > storage . and scroll to the bottom click factory data reset, gives you two options. make sure the one that says erase all data is not checked...if you don't have an external sd "erase sd card" is grayed out, if you do make sure that one is unchecked as well...if you check those.
Erase all data deletes internal SD.
Erase SD card deletes External SD.
does that help?
I believe if you do it from custom recovery it will not delete any of the internal or external. but check with binary again.

Usually I hook up my phone to my computer. Under "My computer" it should have your cdrive and your phone. mine shows up "SGH-i717" and under that is my "card" and "phone" you can just move over pictures and movies from the phone to card. that should make some room for your phone. if this helped hit that thanks button
i know what u saying but i dont have any movies on phone. i only have games
If I understand your question then go to system settings, manage apps then click on the app and select move to Sd card.

Same way with a few phones. The external SD is for media and such while internal is for apps and such. No real fix, but you can get titanium backup and backup all of them to your external, then uninstall the ones you're not using. Restore then when you want to use them. That's what I end up doing

We would need something like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433436
Quote from the thread of what that does (I would actually like something like this for Note as my internal SD is practically full)
mattiadj said:
You have misunderstood something . The situation is simple. Transformer has a 16gb internal sd (in my case, I have 16gb version) and so this internal sd card of 16gb is used to store all my data! For apps in /data, apps storage in /sdcard/android/data and so on.
So if I install for example games like front line commando, gta 3, or gameloft games, shadowgun or something which needs extra resources to download, these apps download what they need into internal sd. And so the space in internal sd (which is the internal memory of tablet) became full quickly!! Why? Because the internal sd is viewed as sdcard and mounted in /sdcard and /mnt/sdcard and so is used as normal sd by apps! So transformer has a sdcard which is used both for apps installation and data storage!!! No nand or real internal memory!
External sd is used for nothing!!!
So why my script? This script is essential to fix this stupid behaviour!!
Your internal sd card is mounted to store all apps you wants and apps install on it only their apk files and necessary data. On external they stored all extra data resources and all they need!!!! On external! And internal is untouched!
So android info see this new situation in inverted way since in our transformer (and i think this is a big issue of Asus) what is mounted in /sdcard is considered as INTERNAL MEMORY and what is mounted in /Removable/MicroSD is viewed as EXTERNAL MEMORY.
Since this mod inverts mount point... The information in memory tab is inverted!
Let's now with an example.
If you install shadowgun game without my mod, it installs in you internal both game package (in /data) and 250mb of resource in /sdcard/Android/data/gamefolder.
So you have 300mb less in your INTERNAL SD!!
With my mod simply the 250 of extra resources are downloaded in you external sd!!! So you have 250mb save on internal sd to install other apps!!!!
I hope is all more clear now and is better understood how this mod is important!

Wait, to the OP:
Did you format the new SD card, then power the phone off, remove the card, pop it back in and then power up again?
If you don't format the card initially, the phone won't recognize it at all.
If that's not what you were getting at initially, then ignore this post.
-Ryan
Did we make any progress on this situation? Has anyone found a way to move apps to the external sd card. And let me point out to the few that have posted in this thread. When you move apps to the sd card through app manger or apps to sd they only move to the internal sd card.
I'd really like a fix for this as well. My 16GB MicroSD is going unused because of it. I don't store movies or music on my phone, I stream all that. But all the Internal SD memory is full because nothing recognizes that there's more than one "SD" storage space.
GET the free app called GLtoextSD or something like that name search on play store it i'll help you.(it requires root)

[Q] [Xperia Sola] SD Card and Internal storage

Hi all,
As there is specific thread for our Xperia Sola, I created my topic here. Sorry if I was wrong :/
I have a question about the management of the internal storage and the sd-card storage. Because it seems that my phone is considering my "sd card" as the internal storage.
When I connect my phone to my PC, I can see the internal storage and my sdcard content (as I choose MSC as connection type). But I can't see the content of my SD card directly from my phone. I tested with EStrong file explorer and the folder "/sdcard/" point to the internal storage. Same thing with Solid Explorer...
So I took Root explorer to sse behind the scene and I understand that my sdcard is mount in "/ext_card"..
So, this behaviour is really annoying: what's the meaning to have a sdcard input if I can only use the internal storage ? As I have a external storage, I would like to not use the internal storage. How can I do this ?
Thanks for your answer
I Also Have The Phone And the System Is Same For Me Better Get Use To It
Your external SDcard (/ext_card) is only for photos, music and videos.... No for aplication data. Yea that's really annoying. But i have read somewhere that you can (after root) edit the mounting points and mount your SDcard to sdcard. But there is no one who tried that.
YES ! I tried that ! You need root your phone and then do this . Don't forget to move apps from "sdcard" to phone ! Now i have 8 GB Internal storage and 4 GB external storage I love SOLA !

Ok, so I searched the forum a bit&found some interesting related posts, such as the below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670626
U will see that it mentions an app called data binding, which can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262
I'm abt to try it out on my Sola 2c if it saves the day, as I don't think we have a proper alternative..
u know, even if it is possible, if u run a Game located in a External SDcard, It would be laggy like hell, especially HD games. Because reading files from the external card is much SLOWER than the internal one. So...
Yep, but if it comes to that&u REALLY need extra storage, u must have an alternative. And it can't be that bad running apps from SD - i did it with my old ZTE out of pure necessity, as it has like zero internal storage available&it wasn't all that bad..
Plus, if u have the option, u can always leave the HD game for example on internal phone storage&move to the external SD other, not so "heavy duty" apps.
What I did was use Link2SD, as it looked more promising than the above.
I can't post the outside link as I'm a newbie just google Link2SD if interested, there is a very good guide of it at xperiablog.net, u can search it there too.
Let's see..
Testing Directory Bind ! It worked
Work on my SOLA using Directory Bind app ! :good:
Link2sd is also a good app - same philosophy (data binding is the concept behind both).

hey
first of al u mean that the "/ext_card" is the real SD card storage and not the "/sdcard"
and we are actually not allowed to put anything in it !!!
so what android use the SD card actually ?!!!
if its as Kevlud said so when i am sending an music or video file it will actually stored in the SD card and it will not get space in the internal storage ???
thanks 4ur replays u both
so can it be viewed by file managers in the phone?
so by doing this, file managers in sola can view external sd cards? and also when we connect the phone to computer, the computer can also view the external sd card? tq please reply asap..
Hi all
Do not bother
I have a Sony Sola., When the data on the memory card can not run the pump slipped. Should be on the internal memory. Whether a program that will fix the problem.
( Excuse my language is not good)

Extsdcard vs sd card. How is it saving?

I went into root explorer.
I went into /mnt/
And I noticed there's two options....
/Extsdcard and /sdcard
Seems like all my downloads, music, and everything is getting saved to /sdcard
What does this mean?
P.s. I have a 64gb micro sdcard card.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
your extsdcard is your external one in your phone you can remove. i would recomend saving most your files like your music and such to that. sdcard is your internal memory of your phone. you have less space there and should save it for more important things. hope that helped
It means everything is being saved to your Internal Storage. I haven't quite figured out how to default everything to the ExtSdcard yet. I know the camera can. The phone will read everything from the ExtSdcard fine though, such as music and other files.
The ext sd card can be used for the camera/video, CWM backups, music files you copy from your computer, and you can move most any files there that you download.
The internal sd card will be used for all of your apps, there's no way to 'move to sd card', you just have the full 16/32gb internal sd for all of it. Since you will always be forced to use the internal sd card for all app needs, I just try to keep everything on my ext sd card I can (my cwm backups are 1.7gb!). Not that it really matters for me though, I downloaded every app I ever use and a few games and only hit 1.2gb used on my internal sd card.
You can also go to th advanced tab within the stock browser and select memory card for default storage. I am guessing that is ext SD as the other option is "Phone".
Thanks for the information!
This was quite confusing at first. Time to start moving files

permanent fix for this?
My issue is that everything defaults to the /sdcard (internal partition - i'm calling it that for ease of terminology) and some apps just don't give you another option of where to save the media to (or don't let you browse over to the right thing). as it stands, the phone seems to be mounting that internal /sdcard partition as if it were external media, ie in android's default location for external media. thus, apps are looking ofr the REAL SD card and think they've found it but they haven't.
the reason this is a problem for me is 1. i have to change this in every app that allows me to, and 2. CWM sends backups to the internal one automatically and i can't change it and have to manually move the backup images to my external.
the reason i'm going into all of this is i'd like to find a way to entirely get rid of the /sdcard folder representing the internal memory and have the external card take its place. I'd like the rest of my 29ish GB of internal storage to be part of the system partition - where apps go, etc. it's not that i want to use that space, it's that i want to "move to SD" to the right SD. i just don't want the apps and system to treat ANY internal space as if it were external or mounted or anything of the sort.
my last phone, Atrix 2, had like 2-4gb internal. I'm just suggesting stretching that amount all the way to 32gbs and using the SD card as an SD card.
the question, basically, is whether there is any way to make this happen? i came across a thread (google "sd card mount point modification" as i can't post external links yet) elsewhere that discusses doing this with a VTAB and was wondering if this is something that is addressing my (our?) issue, whether it's a recommended solution, and whether it would work on the S3. i'm fine following technical instructions but I have very limited knowledge of the way addressing etc. works on Android and this filesystem. any help (or a redirect to a thread where this is more appropriate to ask) would be greatly appreciated.
Does this issue persist with custom roms? Is it an Ics bug that won't let you install apps to extsdcard or a Samsung intentional crap? I know one other android phones I had I could save apps to sd card no issues.

haven't tried any, waiting for something where key things like camera, LTE, etc all work. It's not that I can't install to extSD, it's that the default is "sdcard" (ie the internal space allocated). it's really a function of the way the system/phone allocates that extra internal space - rather than calling it "internal storage/system storage", they are calling it the "primary sd card" and the actual sd card is being called "2nd sd card". it's this treatment of the spaces by the system that i'm unhappy about, i guess.
that's a good point though, and i am hoping that a custom ROM will do this differently. will update when i find one i like
EDIT: gonna do the Task & Ktoonsez AKOP Rom this weekend, should know how the spaces are treated. again, will update.
