[Q] Clockworkmod WILL NOT work on my S2! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Yes I know there are so many threads about this. Yes I have looked at all of them. No I don't understand what's going on. No, there is no simple answer. I have spent the last 3 hours trolling the interwebs to find the answer and there is no intelligible one (I can find) to this problem.
I have:
- Galaxy S2 i9100GT
- Vodafone AU
- Just flashed kernel: CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KF2-v4.0-CWM4
- Then install CWM
- Success
- Enter recovery mode.
- Bring me to Android system recovery <3e> with following error:
Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Tried:
- Taking my 32gb SD card out (did not help).
Someone in some thread said to do this:
1, Click the CWM Manager Icon in tray
2, Reboot into CWM recovery
3, Wipe data cache and Dalvik Cache
4, Install from zip
5, Reboot & restart into recovery
6, Install from Zip
7. Wait 1 min or so
8, Cyanogenmod loads!! - Yay
- WTF is Dalvik cache? (more importantly, do I need to know?)
- Install WHAT from zip?
I am a noob and about to cry. I hate myself. Help
EDIT:
Model number: GT-I9100T
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9100TDUKF2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKF2-CL253204 [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.DUKF2

Uninstall the cwm app then reboot. Reflash the kernel and then reboot again. The unsecure kernels have cwm and superuser built in to them you do not need. To install anything else.

Seems like you're booting to recovery using some app? Just power off your device and hold Volume Up + Home + Power all the way until you're in the recovery menu.

If you can't handle this you should use the Cf-root kernel in original android development under sgs2. Its the simplest to install and get you running

I did what you said and I can't find any CWM app in the apps list now. However, like prodygee suggested, when I enter recovery from off CWM works.
Is this how it's meant to be?
Thanks.
P.S. Also, how would I go about 'unrooting' the phone and getting Samsung Kies back on there? I think I prefer the stock tbh. I'm too much of a noob.

Unroot flash full stock rom reset custom rom counter to zero.
and getting Samsung Kies back on there?
Kies is part of stock firmware .

You might have a CWM manager app in you list, The CF-root kernel installs a custom CWM manager. Look for a little grey cog with CWM across the front of it but if not it doesn't matter.
Welcome to the world of Root !!!!!!!!

Hi,I am having similar problems with my Samsung galaxy s2.My build number is Gingerbread.XXXKI3 and the baseband version is I9100XXXKI3. I have been trying to backup my rom by using rom manager. It kept giving me the same error E:failed to verify whole file signature. So then i looked up some posts and i tried using the cwm which was loaded after rooting and when i click backup, it boots my phone and then says
android system recovery 3e and there are no recovery or backup options.Just
reboot system now, apply update from sdcard, wipe data and wipe cache partition.
Below all that in yellow it says succesfully copied media files. And some other stuff and then successfully applied multi csc.
Can someone help me backup my rom.

Clockwork mod and backing up the SG2

Hello
First let me say sorry if ive posted in the wrong forums.
My question/problem is that today i tried to backup my stock o2 rom having bought the phone yesterday all seemed to have gone well till i noticed it rebooted and started to read files i presume are part of the rom?. Then i got a message saying it had failed and asked me what i wanted to do, reboot etc etc..
My queation is how can i ensure a backup so that im happy knowing that should i install another rom i can just restore my current stock rom?
A
Once again sorry if ive posted this in the wrong section (kinda figured with Q n A's this would be the right place as its more a question then a problem atm)
Thank you for any information you can provide.

What CWM are you using 4e orange script or 3 with blue script .
You rooted the phone with what ???
O2 UK stock rom should be posted in the dev section under one debrand O2 phone and also under stock branded roms .
Much easier to download that save flash via Odin and you can update via Kies if need be .

Hello,
Yes the phone is rooted
When i use vol up + center key + power i get a blue menu at the top it says:
Android system recovery (3e)
Enter: OK Key, Select: Vol UP / Vol Down
reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
When trying to backup current rom or when i ask Rom Manager to reboot into recovery mode i get some yellow text with the following:
-- Installing package...
Finding update package...
Verifying update package...
Then red text with the following:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Yellow text again:
Installation aborted.
I could be wrong but.. that's telling me its trying to install some thing like the CWM and its not and/or its installed and I simply don't recognize the fact it is?
Thanks for your help so far.
I worked it out I just reflashed CWM and bingo i can now backup my current rom, thanks for your help JJEgan
Please can a mod mark this thread as solved?

you need to download flash an insecure kernel in order to get root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Flash the zImage of your root kernel. You will get it by extracting the .tar root file. Copy it to your SD card and flash via CWM with the option Flash Kernel.
Sadly that should not work as at this point he is still running e3 recovery.

Had the same problem, here is the solution I used; seems to have fixed it for me:
www (dot) inspiredgeek (dot) com/2011/06/16/install-clockworkmod-4-0-0-2-cwm-recovery-for-samsung-galaxy-s2-ii-how-to/
(Sorry for fudged address, cant post links yet since I'm a new user)
Another problem
Solution of brainedbysaucepans worked, but iam having another BIG problem now. So I have installed CWM and went in to CWM with Volume up+Home+Power buttons, from there i choose for install from zip and i have installed the newest
MIUI rom. Restarted. Screen doesnt get passed the ''Samsung galaxy s2'' screen with the triangle and exclemation mark. So I went back to CWM and wiped all data. Still cant get past 1st screen. Telephone is un-usuable. A brick is more usefull then my telephone atm :<. Please help. URGENT.
Without knowing what you have done wrong my suggestion would be to wipe the phone install a stock rom and start reading the faqs and guides .
Full wipe boot to recovery .
mounts and storage format data cache system sd card .
put phone to download mode and flash a stock rom .

Thank you! I know you are wise in saying this, as Recovery 3e requires signature verification for flashing external files. Tried pointing stock Recovery to .zip files on sd card (so as to toggle signature verification off), but it doesn't display those files for some reason. How do I get an alternate Recovery that will work with CWR, so that when I flash it will unpack, or how do I otherwise bypass this requirement? Samsung Galaxy SII, Sprint, rooted, but last 5 hours pretty hung up on getting full Recovery going. Obviously a bit of a noob, but would be wicked happy to get a workaround here so I can start flashing ROMs and such.

bs, cannot find it. BUKI1 2.3.5 (gingerbread.BUKJ3) no work at all
signature not verified
trying to use bloatkill.zip on my Huawei h866c. After placing .zip folder on sd card and updating with recovery, I get signature verification failed message. Is there a work around. My phone is not rooted and cannot be rooted because of the addition of SuameKinUser.apk to my system files. I would like to remove it so I can traditionally root this device.
Thanks for the help.
I'm having the same sort of problem at the moment, did you ever resolve this?
My phone was locked to the 3 network when I got it, I rooted the phone and got it to the current set up as below;
Samsung gt-i9100
android version - 2.3.5
baseband version - I9100NEKI2
kernel version - [email protected] #2
build number - GINGERBREAD.XWKI8
I have SuperSU installed
I have recently tried to update using Cyanogenmod and Revolt files/guides here on XDA, the latest file being revolt_i9100-ALPHA-20131011.zip however i get the same message on install of;
E:failed to verify the whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Can anyone please point out what is going wrong or direct me to another guide that would be best suited to upgrading from my current setup?

[Q] Root, Rom manger, Backup

searched the forums and learnt what i can but need some help...
So i rooted my samsung galaxy s2 with this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
then reinstalled the original kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle.
Then I thought it would be best to back up everything before I mess around and i understand Rom manager could do that, so I:
Installed the app,
Selected flash clockwork mod recovery option in rom manger,
Chose backup current rom
it came up with this error:
-- Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
So i found this thread which sometime said would fix it on some forum
http://www.inspiredgeek.com/2011/06...cwm-recovery-for-samsung-galaxy-s2-ii-how-to/
did what it said and installed it, went into rom manager after reboot selected backup current rom again and it froze with a yellow triangle and android guy showing. I switched it off and on again then it went through the backup process...
Have I done things correctly?
how can I get rid of the yellow Triangle again and still beable to backup?
was the freeze screen one moment away from me bricking my phone?
and finally how do I restore the back up I made if anything goes wrong, from recovery mode?
Also after these changes where made I only get a quadrant score of 2566 from 3246 have these changes affected that?
I'm looking to maybe try Lightening ROM when I get things sorted, is there anything i should know on that?
Thank you for your time.
Your links don't work... first things first don't use rom manager, second find the cf-root kernel that matches your firmware here and flash it with odin... now you have root and recovery installed.
Now if you want to backup your phone reboot into recovery by holding volume up(down is for download mode for flashing kernels) + home + power then navigate to backup.
Thanks for your reply i've updated the links...
My kernel currently says:
2.6.35.7
[email protected] #12
so very unsure of the kernel I need to have in the link you provided...
My orginal kernel was XWKF3 if thats any help?
Wait so you have cm7 installed and then you installed an original kernel? That's just messed up.
There's a kf3 kernel in that link that i posted but now i have no idea if it'll work with cm7 at all.
If you want to get rid of the triangle simply get a usb jig from ebay for a few bucks.
Great the black colors are bk to normal on the device and I've created a new bkup with CWM...
so now say if I wanted to put: Lite'ning Rom on there.
I just install the rom how it says in the thread and if I want to get rid of it I just restore my backup?
Can I install modded rom's on top of modded rom's or is it best to just restore backup each time?
Yes as long as you made a backup of your previous rom you can easily restore it if you don't like the new rom.
Majority of roms wipe all the data/system directories so you can install them over top of each other, if you experience some fc issues go back into cwm and wipe the data/system/cache partitions and reinstall.
Thank you very much all is running ok
Just a quick note CF-root comes with CMW manager app but its been taken off when I wiped the data and cache as the social hub was forcing to close... (fixed after wipe)
is there anyway to get this app back, I know I can still back up through recovery mode but its a brilliant app.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 Problems with ROM Manager and ClockWorkMod ROM Backup

Hello, I have a Samsung Galaxy S2.
Model Number: I9100M
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100MUGKG2
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKG2-CL342890
[email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
I followed this guide to ROOT my phone:
I googled "how to root samsung galaxy s2" and the first link was to reviews CNET and that's the one I followed. Sorry I wanted to post the link but I am not able to.
That guide includes doing all the root process with Odin3, loading an unsecure Kernel and then using S2 Root to root the phone.
I went through it all and I'm good. Now the problem that I've been searching an answer for is the following:
I now want to try other ROMs. I went and downloaded ROM Manager. I did the Flash ClockworkMod and the Latest Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
When I click in Backup Current ROM it gives me the input for the name of the backup and I click ok. The phone restarts and goes into the Android System recovery <3e> and I get this
Android system recovery <3e>
Enter: OK Key, Select : Vol UP / Vol Down
reboot system now
applu update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
-----------------
-- Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verifiaction failed
Installation aborted.
Then I select reboot system now and it boots to the system. When it boots though now I get a sounds every time it boots, as if maybe something is not valid; so I don't know what it is that is happening here.
I want to back up my ROM so that I could then go ahead and try different ROMs such as the cyanogenmod or the cognition, etc. I am new to this but I do have a bit of background in development (html, php, as2, as3). I like messing around with my phones so I want to see what this Galaxy S2 is capable of.
Thank you in advanced guys.
Rom manager is not compatible you've got to boot in to clockwork or use cwm app.

There's your problem, you should of searched on xda first.
Flash the cf-root kg2 kernel from here and you'll instantly get cwm recovery and root, and stop using rom manager.
Yeah I know. Thing is that I didn't find xda until after I rooted my phone because I wanted to know more and do more with it, hence xda comes in.
Thank you. I will do that. Now is there a step by step guide that I could look at just to make sure I could do it right. I got the file "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_MOT_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip" but not what do I do with it. Thank you for your help. Please refer me to the best guide for rooting my phone (if i need to do it again) and to a guide that also get's me through backing up my phone so that I could mess around with other roms and always be able to go back to factory state.

[Q] Issue Installing Custom Rom on Samsung Galaxy S2

Hello everyone:
I am having some issue trying to install a custom rom (VillanRom 3.0) on my Samsung Galaxy S2. I am a beginner so I apologize in advance if what I am asking seemes a bit noobish.
My Samsung Galaxy S2 is already rooted I believe running Gingerbread 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXK17
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513
[email protected] #2
I booted into Rom Manager and did Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. And then I chose Samsung GalaxyS2.
I have already put the custom rom onto the SD card. I tried booting into the Android system recovery <3e>, I wiped factory setting and cache, and after that there is no option to 'install zip from SD card'. So I attempted to enter the option "apply update from sdcard" and I get this error:
-- Install /sdcard ...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Am I missing something here? Please any help would be appreciated I'm not very good at the technical stuff. Thank you so much.
Sorry to bump this. I'm desperate. Any help please would be extremely appreciated!! x

Are you sure your phone is rooted and the fw is k17?
Anyway follow this thread to root your phone and then flash the custom rom you want
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Hello siberian tiger:
Thank you so much for the reply I really appreciate it.
I'm pretty sure my phone is rooted because it has a triangle everytime I start up my phone. How do I know if my fw is k17?
Is there different types of root? If my phone is currently rooted can I just follow the procedure in that thread you linked and just overide my current root without unrooting my phone?
Thanks
I believe I know where it went wrong. Most kernels do not support rom manager. If you are a beginner you probably used the cf-root method. So read the cf-root thread again you'll see that rom manager is not supported.
Now that you don't see the install zip from sdcard option that means you don't have clockwork recovery installed anymore. Download the CWM app (in the cf-root thread) and the cf-root kernel in tar format. Use the flash kernel option to flash the tar file. Then you'll get clock work recovery back.
If this doesn't work, the for-sure-will-work option is to use odin to reflash the cf-root kernel.
