[Q] Issue Installing Custom Rom on Samsung Galaxy S2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone:
I am having some issue trying to install a custom rom (VillanRom 3.0) on my Samsung Galaxy S2. I am a beginner so I apologize in advance if what I am asking seemes a bit noobish.
My Samsung Galaxy S2 is already rooted I believe running Gingerbread 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXK17
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513
[email protected] #2
I booted into Rom Manager and did Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. And then I chose Samsung GalaxyS2.
I have already put the custom rom onto the SD card. I tried booting into the Android system recovery <3e>, I wiped factory setting and cache, and after that there is no option to 'install zip from SD card'. So I attempted to enter the option "apply update from sdcard" and I get this error:
-- Install /sdcard ...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Am I missing something here? Please any help would be appreciated I'm not very good at the technical stuff. Thank you so much.

Sorry to bump this. I'm desperate. Any help please would be extremely appreciated!! x

Are you sure your phone is rooted and the fw is k17?
Anyway follow this thread to root your phone and then flash the custom rom you want
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399

Hello siberian tiger:
Thank you so much for the reply I really appreciate it.
I'm pretty sure my phone is rooted because it has a triangle everytime I start up my phone. How do I know if my fw is k17?
Is there different types of root? If my phone is currently rooted can I just follow the procedure in that thread you linked and just overide my current root without unrooting my phone?
Thanks

I believe I know where it went wrong. Most kernels do not support rom manager. If you are a beginner you probably used the cf-root method. So read the cf-root thread again you'll see that rom manager is not supported.
Now that you don't see the install zip from sdcard option that means you don't have clockwork recovery installed anymore. Download the CWM app (in the cf-root thread) and the cf-root kernel in tar format. Use the flash kernel option to flash the tar file. Then you'll get clock work recovery back.
If this doesn't work, the for-sure-will-work option is to use odin to reflash the cf-root kernel.

[Q] Problem with recovery ROM Manager and Galaxy S2 (XWKDD)

Hello ... I ask you a little help on ROM Manager and Recovery.
I just root the galaxy S2 with the procedure supercurio, so my ROM is pretty much stock ... I was a XWKDD.
ROM Manager (in his opinion) regularly install ClockworkMod 4.0.0.2, but when I restart in recovery and launch the update.zip I get the following error message:
Finding update package ...
Opening update package ...
Verifiyng update package ...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
Googling a little I found how to sign files.zip, moddied 3e recovery and also to ignore the signs in zip files ... but none of these workarounds work ...
So how I can use this 3e recovery with unsigned files?
Or ... how can I replace the 3e with the 2e recovery? (There ROM with the 2e which do not differ much from the stock ROM?)

Help needed aswell
EDIT: I do not like the CWM4 as the recovery deletes it's self after about a day for some reason, then i have to reflash.
I am using the Stock XWKF4 rom (rooted) with superuser and busybox and i also can't use ROM to install clockwork mod recovery.
I get the same error as the guy above me.....Help
Please, Thanks,
Andrew.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Having this problem too.
In ROM Manager, I flashed the latest CWM, then reboot into recovery.
It reboots to Android system recovery (3e).
Any idea how I can get recovery working. Do I need to flash a different kernel?
I actually JUST dealt with this issue myself. I had the same kernel as you.
You need to flash a new stock ROM in odin, I used KG6. I just used the stock kernel, not the whole package.
The stock ROMs can be found here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Then when this is done, you use odin to flash a CF Root for that kernal following these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Thanks.
Got this working yesterday by flashing this kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118918
I am also having issues. I have an SGS2 with 2.3.3..
I have rooted the phone and am trying to install Cyanogenmod7 (nightly build #22) to my phone.
I have downloaded ROM Manager, Flashed Clockwork Mod Recovery (4.0.1.5) and have tried to 'Install ROM from SD Card', then selected the cyanogenmod. However, its coming up with the following message:
Finding update package ...
Opening update package ...
Verifiyng update package ...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I have tried to download 3e without signature verification "3e_recovery_no_sig_check" but this has not worked. I am a bit of a noob at this so appreciate any lamens terms help anyone can provide!!
Hey guys. I tried the KG6 and CF kernel, and the lulz kernal. Both are giving me t 3e error on CWM. What else can I do?
cant flash roms
Hey guys,
I too am having this problem. I have completely lost the ability to flash roms from cwm. It says "Installing update" when its a new rom and it flashes it in less that 3 seconds and then it gets stuck at the boot. If I use rom manager it just says "E: signature verification failed on the whole file". I have tried the following:
-restoring stock rom (KE2) and then using cf-root which installs 4.0 and cwm 4.0.0.2
-formatting sdcard
It's really bad, I am dwelling on just one nandroid backup of Cognition and I can't even update it!
Thanks for your help
You cannot use 3e to install custom roms. 3e (blue color) is the default samsung recovery. When you try to flash custom rom with 3e, it will fail verification.
You need to use Clockwork Recovery (orange color).
Try installing Speedmod Kernel instead of using CF-Root kernel and see what happens.
Mate that totally fixed it thanks so much for the help! Now I can get back to flashing stuff!!

Problem to flash CWM
Hi,
Here are the steps that got me into this situation:
1. My provider installed a test version on my Galaxy S2 in order to resolve some problems.
2. After the above I rooted my device using ODIN 1.85 and SuperOneClick 2.1.1 using XWKDD kernel.
The versions of my phone now are:
Model Number GT-I9100T
Android version 2.3.4
Baseband version I9100TJIKI1
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected]#2
Build Number GINGERBREAD.JIKI2
My intention is to flash CWM in order to install Cyanogenmod ROM. When I tried to flash the CWM using ROM Manager it failed. From what I read it is because I have 3e recovery.
I saw some suggestions for resolution, like flashing a stock kernel and than flash CWM again to avoid the invalid signature problem.
However, I couldn't find any kernel that fits my device situation.
Any suggestions for a route I can take to resolve the situation?
a route that will leave my device functioning
Thanks, Nissim
You should try and install a custom kernel which also flashes clockwork mod recovery on your phine like speedmod, ninphetamine or hellcat's kernel.

Thank you for the advise.
Unfortunately digging into the above kernels you suggested, I couldn't find that any of them fits my situation (Build:GINGERBREAD.JIKI2 and kernel:XWKDD).
I saw clear warnings not to select the wrong kernel.
Look for cfroot kernel. It is almost stock. Just rooted. I think i saw ki2 over there.

[Q] Clockworkmod WILL NOT work on my S2!

Hey guys,
Yes I know there are so many threads about this. Yes I have looked at all of them. No I don't understand what's going on. No, there is no simple answer. I have spent the last 3 hours trolling the interwebs to find the answer and there is no intelligible one (I can find) to this problem.
I have:
- Galaxy S2 i9100GT
- Vodafone AU
- Just flashed kernel: CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KF2-v4.0-CWM4
- Then install CWM
- Success
- Enter recovery mode.
- Bring me to Android system recovery <3e> with following error:
Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Tried:
- Taking my 32gb SD card out (did not help).
Someone in some thread said to do this:
1, Click the CWM Manager Icon in tray
2, Reboot into CWM recovery
3, Wipe data cache and Dalvik Cache
4, Install from zip
5, Reboot & restart into recovery
6, Install from Zip
7. Wait 1 min or so
8, Cyanogenmod loads!! - Yay
- WTF is Dalvik cache? (more importantly, do I need to know?)
- Install WHAT from zip?
I am a noob and about to cry. I hate myself. Help

Uninstall the cwm app then reboot. Reflash the kernel and then reboot again. The unsecure kernels have cwm and superuser built in to them you do not need. To install anything else.

Seems like you're booting to recovery using some app? Just power off your device and hold Volume Up + Home + Power all the way until you're in the recovery menu.
If you can't handle this you should use the Cf-root kernel in original android development under sgs2. Its the simplest to install and get you running

I did what you said and I can't find any CWM app in the apps list now. However, like prodygee suggested, when I enter recovery from off CWM works.
Is this how it's meant to be?
Thanks.
P.S. Also, how would I go about 'unrooting' the phone and getting Samsung Kies back on there? I think I prefer the stock tbh. I'm too much of a noob.

You might have a CWM manager app in you list, The CF-root kernel installs a custom CWM manager. Look for a little grey cog with CWM across the front of it but if not it doesn't matter.
Welcome to the world of Root !!!!!!!!
Hi,I am having similar problems with my Samsung galaxy s2.My build number is Gingerbread.XXXKI3 and the baseband version is I9100XXXKI3. I have been trying to backup my rom by using rom manager. It kept giving me the same error E:failed to verify whole file signature. So then i looked up some posts and i tried using the cwm which was loaded after rooting and when i click backup, it boots my phone and then says
android system recovery 3e and there are no recovery or backup options.Just
reboot system now, apply update from sdcard, wipe data and wipe cache partition.
Below all that in yellow it says succesfully copied media files. And some other stuff and then successfully applied multi csc.
Can someone help me backup my rom.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 Problems with ROM Manager and ClockWorkMod ROM Backup

Hello, I have a Samsung Galaxy S2.
Model Number: I9100M
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100MUGKG2
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKG2-CL342890
[email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
I followed this guide to ROOT my phone:
I googled "how to root samsung galaxy s2" and the first link was to reviews CNET and that's the one I followed. Sorry I wanted to post the link but I am not able to.
That guide includes doing all the root process with Odin3, loading an unsecure Kernel and then using S2 Root to root the phone.
I went through it all and I'm good. Now the problem that I've been searching an answer for is the following:
I now want to try other ROMs. I went and downloaded ROM Manager. I did the Flash ClockworkMod and the Latest Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
When I click in Backup Current ROM it gives me the input for the name of the backup and I click ok. The phone restarts and goes into the Android System recovery <3e> and I get this
Android system recovery <3e>
Enter: OK Key, Select : Vol UP / Vol Down
reboot system now
applu update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
-----------------
-- Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verifiaction failed
Installation aborted.
Then I select reboot system now and it boots to the system. When it boots though now I get a sounds every time it boots, as if maybe something is not valid; so I don't know what it is that is happening here.
I want to back up my ROM so that I could then go ahead and try different ROMs such as the cyanogenmod or the cognition, etc. I am new to this but I do have a bit of background in development (html, php, as2, as3). I like messing around with my phones so I want to see what this Galaxy S2 is capable of.
Thank you in advanced guys.
Rom manager is not compatible you've got to boot in to clockwork or use cwm app.

There's your problem, you should of searched on xda first.
Flash the cf-root kg2 kernel from here and you'll instantly get cwm recovery and root, and stop using rom manager.
Yeah I know. Thing is that I didn't find xda until after I rooted my phone because I wanted to know more and do more with it, hence xda comes in.
Thank you. I will do that. Now is there a step by step guide that I could look at just to make sure I could do it right. I got the file "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_MOT_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip" but not what do I do with it. Thank you for your help. Please refer me to the best guide for rooting my phone (if i need to do it again) and to a guide that also get's me through backing up my phone so that I could mess around with other roms and always be able to go back to factory state.

[Q] samsung galaxy s2 clockwork recovery issues

ok im very very very green to this i will start from the beginning hopefully some one can help me IM LOST!!!
ok i have a Samsung galaxy s 2 from bell unlocked on the rogers network in Canada.
so today i found some instruction on how to root my phone. i followed the instructions to the t using this web instructions.renjusblog.com/2011/06/root-samsung-galaxy-s2-easily.html i downloaded the odin the XWKDD tar file and the super one click program i followed the instructions and my phone seems to be rooted. there's no problem there.
next i wanted to try a custom rom. so i found instruction on how to do it. and read that cyanogen mod 7 was a good one. so i found instructions online from here thetechjournal.com/electronics/computer/software/mobile-software-computer/install-cyanogenmod-7-on-samsung-galaxy-s-ii.xhtml
so i downloaded rom manage premium from the app world and installed it. i then followed the instructions. i click flash work mod recovery. then a screen pops up and i click Samsung galaxy s2 and it downloads vr 4.0.1.5 no problem. then i go to the next step and i click reboot into recovery my phone shuts off and the Samsung logo come on and it enter android system recovery with 4 options reboot system apply update from sdcard wipe data factory reset wipe cash partitions. in blue letters

can some please help me fix this so i can get clockwork recover working so i can load the new rom and help would be appreciated and if u need more details let me know
Thanks dor what lol i need sone help lol
when you say your phone is rooted, has it put super user on it?
if you're struggling with this then i think you'll find re-rooting with a cf-root file will be far easier for you, go in to settings and about phone and look at your baseband, it should say something like i9100xwkdd, if thats the version you are on then you need to download the corresponding cf-root, although id recommend updating the firmware to xxki3 first then cf-root with appropriate file, chainfire has a thread just for these.
Ok i check the base ban as u said and its i9100mugkg2 how do i re root it to the base ban u recomended? Where do i find the file? And yes i have the super user app
i've been doing some research as ive never seen ugkg2 before, this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16085735 explains a little about it
---------- Post added at 05:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:07 PM ----------
im not sure how other people would do it, but personally id use odin v1.85 to flash xxki3, found here http://hotfile.com/dl/130600047/b70801e/I9100XXKI3.rar.html
i would then use the cf-root for that version made by chainfire found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=732531&d=1317117018
this will root and put clockworkmodrecovery on it, once youve done these steps you can download any custom rom zip file, place it in the root of the sd card and flash
---------- Post added at 06:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:17 PM ----------
i've been using a rom from androidmeda and haven't had any issues i think its the best one i've used, but are all down to user preference, are you familiar with flashing a rom with odin?
No im not this is a brand new phone and am just trying to learn the ropes. i happen to follow some instructions i found onlne it seemed to root my phone fine but now i cant fet in to clockwork recovery. so u say unroot my phone and re root it with the instructions u posted?

Do you have an update package on the root of your SD card. It's being auto detected which is why that's popping up.
I dont know how can i check that?

Look at the files on your SD card. Is there an update package that you might have downloaded previously?
Ok i went and looked and found an update.zip and del it but when i go back to rom manager and press flash ckockwork recover it puts it back there
ok so i downloaded that files u said i found the password. then i reloaded it on the phone useing odion 1.85 useing the 4 files that where there rebotted my phone. it was un rooted. so i searched the web for the root file for the xxki3 files i just loaded and rooted my phone i have super user and cwr apps added. then i downloaded again rom manager premium flashed to clockwork recovery and then tryed to download a rom and install but again the phone is trying to get into cwr but its stalls out at the samsung recovery saying this message again]

but i cant load a coustom rom from rom manager
please some one help!!!!!!
Can some instruct me in how to flash to a cool rom rom manage is not working out for me
hello any one out there?
I have the same problem as you, i delete the update.zip but it comes back. I dont know what the problem is
I cant get to recovery
ya i even went as far as to download the rom direct from the CyanogenMod 7 website the latest nightly load it to the internal memory of the phone restart the phone into clock work recovery with out using rom manager then wipe the cash and partition and all the other options and then install the zip from the sd card option it runs the zip file installs but when the phone restarts it wont load back the Samsung home screen then i have to put the phone back into download mode and use Odin to load the files that work to get my phone working again. as well i try to load the zip file i downloaded into odin and there is no tar file so i cant do that option ether.
does any have a fix for this problem or wa apparently im not the only one with this issue
can some one answer this for me i am running android 2.3.5 baseband i9100xxki3
i wanna flash to a new rom liteing rom its android 2.3.4 base band xxkh3 can i switch like that or do i have to stay with roms that have the xxki3 base band?
would this be y i cant flash any roms?
On my rom, if i press and hold power and instead of shutoff, if i select "recovery" I get the clockwork recovery. But if i open the clockwork app and hit reboot to recovery i end up with the 3e
ive been told my rom isnt compatible with Rom manager so maybe thats the issue
ya i dont have that option i can get into clock work recovery by shutting off the phone and holding the voulm up button home key and power button i load the rom from installing the zip from sd card but no matter what rom i try the phone wont load
my phone was stock i rooted it useing gf root files not useing odin i can load factory files thats it i try a rom dosent work and i reload the factory rom i cant get any rom to work there is some thing wrong and i herd this was the place to get the answeres but so far no luck

What the...
What do you want to do? Root your phone?
Find chainfires cfroot kernel thread and flash the KK5 one from there.
The other errors look like Rom manager is trying to find and access CWM but because you flashed a stock kernel back its not there. Only stock recovery.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
It's not an issue. CWM Recoveries are installed within the kernels. If you flash back to stock kernel, you will lose CWM Recovery. Naturally, ROM manager does not work with CWM recoveries on the Samsung Galaxy S II, so let's say you clicked Install ROM in ROM Manager, it would reboot to the stock Samsung recovery, but until you reboot to CWM Recovery it would take it's effect to install the ROM you want.
I suggest you to stick to a custom kernel, I use the Void kernel, and I think it is a great kernel.
