Difference between CM7 and Aura? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i am currently using CM7 and really like it, but i would like to have my fingerprint scanner back, and some of the motoblur i actually quite liked (though it seems im in a minority XD )
what i'd like to know is: what features would i lose/gain from flashing to Aura? from reading their specs they seem quite similar. is either significantly better (i realise CM7 is only beta, and i will probably go back to it when it has a full release if i do change for now)
thanks a lot

I had cm7 previously, then just flashed aura. Aura (the debloat version) is a bit faster and smoother, however you have to download the 3rd party browser and gallery for the full effect. I'm liking it so far and will jump back into CM7 once it is stablized.

The devs of cm7 go for the slimmest fastest rom they can come up with, cm7 is beta, but it is solid no doubt, it is the fastest rom for the atrix hands down.
with cm7 you boot up with 800-600mb ram aura 500-300. cm7 rom file is more the 50% smaller then blur roms.
with cm7 you curently loose the fingerprint scanner and webtop, but they have fp scanner working and it should be in the next build. for webtop who knows =p
ohhh cm7 has some sick themes that are mad easy to apply
theres more but yea enough said

[Q] Rom selection

Hi all
I hope you can help me with this. I have just bought an Atrix and need a little advice.
This is now my third Moto Android phone. I had a Dext (Cliq), and currently have a Defy. After a few ROMs I settled on MIUI, which I love. Unfortunately I notice this is not yet available for the Atrix, so I will need to select another ROM to use.
I would go straight for CM7, as this is my second choice ROM anyway, but it doesn't support the fingerprint scanner. I don't know if I will actually use this, but it's a new toy I don't want to loose
Can anyone suggest a ROM which would suit me? I don't want Blur (used to love it but I've found phones run so much better without), but I would like to have the fingerprint scanner working, and preferably the Webtop (I'm going to look at getting a lapdock when I can afford it).
Thanks in advance
Mouse
I like Alien4 until CM7 gets fingerprint support.
Looks good, although I would prefer no blur.
Is it possible to de-blur? Like I said, I have found in the past it just slows everything down and eats battery, and I have found better replacements for everything it does.

Alien is partially de-blurred.
Fingerprint and webtop are blue-based. So until cm7 gets fp, you have to choose between not having blur and having fp/webtop

I love the Aura rom! or if you want a little more oomph there is darkside (based on aura) Aura has amazing battery life and I wasn't really into alien for some reason. I would try them both, but I want to fond of the alien :/

You have the option of skipping the Blur setup and then freezing Blur, thats what I did. I have no Blur, but I have fingerprint scanner, no need to choose between them.
I'm using CHERRYpi until CM7 gets the kinks worked out with the FP reader and webtop. I switched over to the Motorola ATRIX from a HTC KAISER and wasn't to taken by motoBLUR myself and can't find a faster or easier way to unlock my phone than the built in fingerprint reader (have corporate sync and phone always wants to lock itself). Not exactly sure how CHERRYpi does it versus CHERRYblur, but I only saw the original home page with 7 screens once shortly after flashing the ROM, and logging in/loading my accounts and contacts. Using the red CHERRYpi crust and have been very happy with it. Guess Blur is frozen in the background somehow to allow use of all features. Haven't tried webtop yet as I haven't got a multimedia docking station to hook my phone up to my big screen projector
Maybe worth a try for you, I've been fairly pleased with battery life, too
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1189497&highlight=CHERRY
I'm running Aura which comes in 3 flavors (De-Blurred, Blurred, and Accounts) De-Blurred is stock android with a tonne of tweaks and such. Accounts is still de-blurred but supports the Blur Accounts (it's what I use), and then Blurred is a fully blurred rom.
There is also Homebase, the newer of which are all de-blurred.
Looks like there's a lot of choice! Think I'm just going to have to pick a couple to try out, and see what I like. With a bit of luck I won't be waiting too long for CM, there are vids of the FP scanner working. MIUI shouldn't be too long after that.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
Personally, I think Aura and The DarkSide are the 2 best ROM's for the Atrix. DS is based off of Aura, but it's a themed ROM, which is pretty cool, IMO. Aura has 3 separate versions: Blurred, Accounts, and De-Blurred. "Blurred" has all of the Blur stuff still in it, just a stripped down version; "Accounts" has the Blur removed, but still allows you to access all of the stuff that's involved with "accounts;" and "De-Blurred" is just that, all the Blur/bloatware removed.
I currently am using DS 2.5.1, but I find myself constantly switching between the two as they are both that good. If you want most of the original features, I would go with either of those two. CM7 has a lot of issues with features not working. Also, the developers for CM7 don't really update it much, supposedly.
I tried the Alien ROM, but it just wasn't as good as DS or Aura. Aura seems to get some of the best battery life out of all the ROM's I've tried (Aura, DarkSide, Alien, and Homebase). DS is within a close 2nd, I would say. Hopefully that helps somewhat.

[Q] ROM Comparison & Reviews?

I am finally getting around to getting my phone in shape, and I'm looking into the various custom ROMs. There are so many choices, and from where I'm at even trying to interpret the feature list of a single one is overwhelming!! I'm *incredibly* overwhelmed, and have no idea where to start...
So I was wondering - can anyone either direct me to a thread / page on Atrix ROM Comparisons & Reviews, or be so kind as to share there opinions here? Thanks!
- Andy
EDIT: To be clear, I'm not asking which ROM is "the best," as I know that's purely subjective. I'm more looking for feature comparisons - what's the same across different roms, what's different between them, what different roms excel in and wat they slack in, etc.
Just check out the features sectiom of each rom though making a thread like that might be helpful. I am now contemplating making one

I have a feeling most people will agree with me when I say the two best ROMs are The Darkside (moto-blur based) by nottach and Neutrino (cm7 based) by notorious544d. So take a look at those two specifically. As far as features go for most ROMs they're almost the same when comparing moto-blur to another blur based ROM. Same for cm7, although many of them have different performance. Happy flashing
Honestly was going to flash darkside, but instead went with Neutrino GT, and damn..I fell in love with my atrix all over again! I absolutely love the fingerprint scanner that acts as a trackball mod..among everything else.
I love the fact he completely stripped the rom down...too much actually that he added add-ons, but you can pick and choose which ones. Very slick.
I spent quite a few hours last night learning about each of the different ROMs and what was worth checking out. In the end, I ended up coming to the same conclusion: that the two I should check out off the back were Neutrino and DarkSide.
However, I'm also thinking of Ba2tF CM7. I understand that Neutrino is also based off of CM7, but has a lot stripped out of it. I don't think I want stripped down. I'm looking for things that are featurefull, and that matters to me over performance - to explore functionality.
However, at the same time I see that while Neutrino is stripped down CM7, it does have features that Ba2tF doesn't have - like the MIUI camera and the trackball scroll...
You can try CM7 weekly#3 or #4 by atrix dev team. It does have FP scanner support. You can try add the other features you like by yourself if you're handy..
I often use youtube vids to get an idea of a rom to at least get an initial reaction. Personally I like to start with a practical rom, ie battery life, first and get more exotic from there once I get an idea of my needs. In my own experience, darkside had just... Incredibly impressive battery life and acceptable everything else. I'm running ba2tf right now, my first cm7 rom ever, and the performance even without OC is great. Smooth, fast and these cm7 tweaks are fun to play with. I can't mount my external sd card in my car, get browser fc's on the regular but they are niggles for me really. Battery for me, while not absurdly good like Darkside, is still solid. No worries if i forget to plug it in overnight and work the next day.
Having said all that, tomorrow is nerd day and i'm flashing neutrino.

What is it that's drawing you to try out Neutrino? What does it have over Ba2tF, aside from the MIUI Camera? Is it more that performance & battery life is enhanced by cutting down bloat - or is there something more interesting than that?
I ask because I'm on Neutrino and the lack of various normally default software is bugging me quite a bit. Navigation for instance is broken because the TTS engine doesn't come with it by default, and isn't yet available in a stable package from what I can tell...

however, i think it was genius to start out stripped, then add whatever add-ons YOU want. Kind of personalizes your ROM a bit, since you cant satisfy everyone.

What's so bad about Stock rom

I've tried most of the roms in the development section, and I'm not knocking the dev who are creating some great roms, but I keep coming back to the stock rom. What's so bad about keeping stock. I mean once the roms in the dev section get all the kinks worked out (mms), I'm sure I'll be going to them, but stock so far seems to work really well. My battery life is decent, and everything works. I do like the MUI rom though, just the mms issue, is keeping me from running it as a daily rom. Just thought, I'd give some props to the stock rom.
Its all personal preference. I personally cant stand blur it drives me nuts, CM9 and nearly ever other has working mms(-MIUI for now) and im a huge CM fan ever since I first flashed CM7. Whatever works best for your uses really.
i jus dont like stock roms at all. they have too much bloatware on them i think
My phone is laggy with the stock rom but Im not willing to lose 4G to run something else. Im just holding on till Sprint has a better phone and I can retire the Photon.
same for me. CM and MIUI jus run so much smoother
Maybe I need to try then newer versions out. I'm using launcher pro on my stock and it seems smooth
In my experience, on the Photon you do not need anything other than stock. Stock runs GREAT. Every custom ROM I have tried has issues.
However, most of my other Android phones really needed custom ROMs due to battery or other issues which hampered their performance.
The Photon is the rare phone that works fine as is.
IMO.

I like stock also but can't help myself cab use some market launchers also on Miui and cm9 just like stock
MIUI/ICS for the Photon
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1536161
Stock:
Laggy/choppy UI (this is a major sales killer. out of the box the lg optimus ui is faster/smoother)
Tons of mostly unused proprietary account services running in the background (BlurOrkut for example)
Mostly useless widgets (When most tap on a clock widget they want it to open the clock app. almost all of the blur widgets do nothing when you tap them)
If you replace the launcher, never use most of the blur services and use third party widgets then stock is a overweight and mostly useless. That being said, if you love blur and it's widgets, use most of those builtin account services then stock is the way to go.
Stock ROM completely lacks the ability to customize everything. Thats what I hate most about it.
I loaded Jokers skinnyV2, and wow, awesome. Fast, smooth and everything is working like stock. I think I found a new daily driver.
I bounce between stock and cm9 stock when I need 4g and cm9 when I want processing and better multi tasking. Not to mention cm9 has more features.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
At least once a week I feel convinced that I NEED 4G, camcorder, or mms, so I install one of the modified stock roms. This usually lasts about 30 minutes before I come to my senses and go back to an ICS rom. I've been using Joker's ICS builds since about the fourth day of owning my photon, and running any non ics rom just feels like putting lawn mower wheels on a Ferrari. Giving up a couple features that I would realistically use at most 10 minutes a week in exchange for an infinitely better user experience is a no brainer in my opinion.
I went back to stock about a month ago and could not be happier!!!! I have not had one single issue since (with exception of Sprints Network!) and the Photon is flawless!
BTW: I got butt naked too! OtterBox is off over by my desktop gaming computer I never use! Dont use my 2 laptops eithere. Nor my PS3. I gotta clean this place up!
I hated stock from day one. Its slow. I have tried just about every rom that the photon has to offer. My daily is between cm9 and MIUI. I just cant make up my mind because I like the fact that MIUI has lots of themes but cm9 is just awsome. Im about to try AOKP so ima jump off. cya
Thanks all for the replies. I think I'll try the newer cm9 and mui roms. So far I'm really liking the joker skinnyv2. I'm going to test out the cm9, mui today.
Personally, I think I, and most here, have a few issues.
#1. I rooted and unlocked it.
#2. I had 230+ apps, most I had no clue!
#3. I had 3 launchers i was bouncing back and forth.
#4. Damm thing kept freezing and I had to reboot several times a week!
#5. My Bluetooth headphones were iffy? (if thats a word!)
I put it back to stock, down to maybe 60 apps, stock UI! The 7 Panels with Stock UI I have configured with my most common apps, with screens for Business, Games, Communication, Shopping, my Social accounts.......
The speed, on 3G is amazing and I can quickly check my bank account, lottery, whatever. The only thing I have extra is Weather Toggle Widgit on home screen.
@ 4 or 5 years ago, I got into flashing/rooting/unlocking/ROM's because I wanted my phone to look/be different. With Stock Photon and some time, it is different! Besides, at the end of the day, bottom line is, I need a fully functional working phone!
JMO!
David Out!
I personally run CM7 and the reason being is that I like having the ability to customize every little detail on my phone and as far as I can tell it runs smoother then stock did for me. I will switch over to CM9 once they just get a one more kink worked out, I need to be able to watch Netflix so I'm waiting for the HW acceleration drivers to be added and then I'll be all in.
I just installed MIUI yesterday and from what I see its even MORE customizable than CM7 including three launchers and all the google apps built in. Its also based on ICS just like CM9 is.
being as im new to the photon but not new to droids ive flashed both cm7 and im currently running the latest build of cm9. that being said my phone runs so much smoother with these roms than i was stock. if it wasnt for the great devs we have for these phones and their persistent need to tweak everything i think the droid market would have crashed long ago. but it is personal preference but personally i like my phones to work 90% or more of the time, with stock i could never get the reliabilty like i could with roms.

[Q] Wanting a new ROM, cant decide.

I have Eclipse 1.1 (old I know) it was great when it first came out and I flashed it. But now I need something new bc its not working as good, and I know theres better versions and other ROMs that are possibly better.
Any suggestions on which ROM to flash and why?
Depends on what you want. If you want a fully functional ROM I'd check out the latest edition of Eclipse.
Cyanogenmod 7.2 rc1 has a small amount of bugs, but is for the most part fully functional. HDMI mirroring doesn't work and that's the one and only downside to me. I still use CM7 as a "daily driver" so to speak. Lots of customization and with the hacks/mods found in this forum I get excellent signal strength, connection speeds and battery life. Wifi still sleeps when the screen's off, but with the v3 build.prop mashup it reconnects on waking within seconds every single time.
Cyanogenmod 9 alpha 3 is somewhat buggy as it's in its early alpha stages. There's no camera yet, but DZK already said there will be a fix for alpha 4. Same with aces miui. It's real slick, being on ics. I like it, but won't stay until there's a working camera and more stability. When that happens this rom will be simply amazing. Overall it's pretty sweet and at the very least, worth checking out/playing around with.....
MIUI4 will be awesome too once the bugs are sorted and fixed. As stated before- the next release will also have a working camera. MIUI is probably one of my favorites if not my favorite but right now its way too buggy for me to use. More so than cm9. Couldn't deal with the bugs Ace is hard at work bringing us more updates and when he finally gets this where he wants it MIUI will more than likely replace cm7 as my daily rom. It's a great ROM in general but I couldn't stay on miui for more than like an hour, personally.
Definitely go into each roms topic and check out the screenshots and videos if there are any. Also look for the working features and known bugs/issues. Honestly I say give them ALL a try and see what best suits you. I only really posted about the newer ones. If I remember correctly molten isn't being updated anymore after 2.3 and I keep forgetting liberty even exists, lol.......
Cyanogenmod all day
I started with Eclipse 1.3 and then went to 2.1 running scripts and about everything else with it. Then when CM9 alpha came out, I had to try it. CM9 alpha works great for me. I needed my camera, so I flashed back to CM7. When the beta version of CM9 rolls around, that's gonna be the ticket!
IMHO- CM7
I can't believe how smooth and FAST my phone is with CM7. The camera works great, very little to no lag at all with anything I have found. There's all kinds of customizations for it. I'm not running any scripts, only CM7 and SD Increase from the market. My phone is fun again and I'm not hesitant to show somebody up with a whyphone like I was before. Try it and see.
Also check out this thread for sure!!

Are you pretty good with computers, tech, etc.? If you want a fast update, just flash CM7 since it is on the same kernel as the version of Eclipse you are on. If you try to update to the latest Eclipse, you have to go through the process of using the SBF to get to stock, updating to 2.3.5 then flash the new version. Its up to you though. CM7 and Eclipse are the most stable ROMs we have at the moment until some bugs get worked out in CM9.
Thanks everyone. I am on Eclipse 2.2.1 as of right now (w/speedy script 7 and other tweaks/apps). Ill probably try CM7 in the future since its already on my sdcard.

Just remember you need to be on 2.3.4 before flashing CM7.
Man I don't know what it is but.....
I used to run Eclipse 2.1 and scripted to the 23498457890345th power maxed out turnaround wing dinger squared. I thought it was as good as it could get. But when I went to CM7, I giggled at what I "thought" I had. Hands down the way to go, until CM9
I would use cm7. Just because its stable and has the best UI in my option and has pretty good performance. or you could wait for cm9 to get more stable with a working camera and better performance.
Liberty 3
Just Rooted and Flashed for the first time.
I went with Eclipse 2.2.1 - because the HDMI support was kind of a deal breaker for me. (Netflix, FPSE, SnesEX, etc. on a big screen!) But I was wondering why none of you mentioned Liberty 3? I haven't tried anything other than Eclipse 2.2.1 so I don't have an educated opinion to share, but other than CM7 it seemed like Liberty 3 and Eclipse were the two other "stable" ROMs in the DEV section.
Is Liberty "bad" or do you guys just not use it, and why?
Also, I flashed what I *thought* was the latest build of Eclipse 2.2.1 (from the official thread) but there are only 5 pull down toggles on my notification panel - I thought there were supposed to be 7? Did I miss something?

I haven't been on eclipse in a while so I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I thought there was an option in settings to set those.
I can't say for sure why nobody mentioned liberty though, it might be because it doesn't offer much compared to eclipse. Also, it was supported for maybe 2 months max while I'm pretty sure nitro is still pushing out updates for the x2(somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm surprised that there isn't one of these for Droid X2 yet. So what ROM do you plan to use and why did you chose it over others?

I'm using Molten 2.3 Redux because I think it is very stable, everything works.
I'll start, haha. I used to use CM7, but when I got a hankering for something a little updated, I switched to CM10. 7 was quite a bit quicker, but 10 makes up for it with JB. I've tried out the other big gingerbread ones (molten, liberty) and ics roms (cm9, pa) but I really like cm10 as my daily now. Anyway, theres my spiel. If you have any questions I'm still on the dx2 and I'd like to connect with the few users still out there.
I just replaced my x2 with a gnexus (woo cheap new old phones). Used a bunch of roms, from eclipse 1.1 to 2.3 to cm7 9 and 10. Currently I'm on Liberty because it seems like the fastest stable phone (which is what I want from my soon to be backup phone). Overall though, I'd say my go to ROM is cm7. It's stable enough and is still full of features. cm9 and 10 are amazing glimpses into ics and jb but it honestly is just too slow/full of problems that I can't stomach it.

if there was some solution to the phone call issue (losing audio/call after proximity sensor turns screen off), i would have stayed on cm10 as well. i use cm9 instead because of battery life (being about twice as long as cm10) and the issue i just mentioned. i also like to use chrome, and falcon pro. besides those, i dont use many apps, so cm9 is pretty stable for me. occasionally , it will reboot when overloaded. but that is not more than once every couple days. not to mention the reboot thing has been an issue on every rom i have ever tried on this phone. including all of the GB ones. :silly:
honsestly, regardless of what rom you are using, this phone runs SO SO / kinda crappy at best. it is just lacking hardware wise, which is why it will never see an update, and for the most part developers have abandoned it. it was fun while it lasted though. it wasnt a horrible enough experience to turn me away from android. but god has it been dissapointing.
