Hi guys I came across this app online and i decide to try it out. Its called the brightness motion. There's a lite and pro version. What this app does is actually to let you easily change your phone display brightness by shaking your phone left or right to increase or decrease brightness if you don't really like the auto brightness and that the presets of brightness in the power control widget is too bright and wastes battery.
Here's a link

Brightness always at Max!

I'm using Widgetsoid and you can set the brightness with as many different increments and %'s that you want. I would bet most widget apps like that or Elixir would have similar settings. Widgetsoids were on the global settings and not the Widgets settings itself.
I found that Xperia Ray have Ambient light sensor from the white paper, but i can't use it on stock roms or CM7, can someone enable this?
this is the link of white paper
http://dl-www.sonyericsson.com/cws/download/1/997/193/1308295710/ray_WP_1.pdf
thanks!
Good question!
I also found in the whitepapers that the Xperia mini pro (sk71i) has the same ambient light sensor but when I check with android tools like "Sensor List" the only thing that could match is the Proximity sensor. That one goes from 1 to 0 if you get close to the top (blocking the light?).
APDS9702 Proximity
The sensor is enabled by default
how? i can't feel that
With my HTC Desire Z I had the "auto brightness" option. On this one I don't. Are you sure it is enabled? Do you have any clue what sensor it would be in the list of for example android app "sensors list".

As of Stock Rom 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 there is no 'auto brightness' option.
But the ambient light sensor is always working.
If you take it outside in bright sunlight, you will notice that the screen automatically gets brighter. That's how you can tell the sensor is always on
I assume they haven't put auto brightness in as a feature because maybe some people want to save battery/adjust their screen brightness for indoor use.
But when the surrounding light passes some threshold (ie, outside), the auto brightness feature overrides your user settings...
thanks.....so, can i make a option for this?

No, there's no select-able option for it. It's always on.
check "brightness level" widget in android market. I just added to my desktop and it has an autolevel option. Seems to work. But I can't say if it's really off when you select only a percentage.
LOL! Check some of the newer topics. Many users want to disable the auto brightness. The topics have some info for rooted users. But as said it seems to be enabled by default.
It's not linked to the 2.3.3 update though. My desire Z also had that Android version and still provided the auto brightness option in the display menu.
It also seems to be the reason of the flickering screen on low backlight setting. That is in fact annoying.
So, how can i disable the sensor? I want my screen always to be bright, i hate this auto adjusting

Thanks. I wanna keep my warranty though
If there is a light sensor on my ray then it must be disabled.
Mine does not react to any changes in light at all - even if I manually cover the whole of the top of my phone in my fist.
I also find that the screen is odd outside in the sun. It looks exactly the same if it's set to 25% brightness or 100% brightness (both are just as easy to see). I can only notice a difference in brightness when i'm indoors or if it's dull and cloudy.
FYI i'm on 4.0.A.2.368 - 2.3.3

Screen Auto Brightness is not working on my Xperia Ray too.. I don't know why this feature was disabled... I tested light sensor and that works but brightness never changes... Is it because of old 2.3.3 firmware i have ? I didn't update to latest yet..
I don't know if it's just me but sometimes my screen kind of flickering.
Is it true that it's because of the light sensor just too sensitive?

For me,Xperia Ray owner are very lucky.
Because the light sensor is implemented very bad on Xperia Mini for example.
The screen flickering and your eyes cry. : (

Yes,is a very boring problem.
The Xperia Mini has two big problem.
-Touchscreen lag
-Flickering screen
Check out this post on the Xperia Arc - works great just the same for the Xperia Ray. Also the linked program well depicts the relation ambient light value, brightness setting and the resulting screen brightness.
Guys as you know, Xperia neo's brightness (maximum) is very low compared to ARc or even X10 mini pro. My mini pro at 50% is equal to the 100% brightness of my Neo. Is there any trick or hack or whatever it is to increase the brightness above 100%? Something to override the maximum brightness? The screen is annoying under the factory set max brightness as the white colored pages look yellowish.
Is there some way to increase the brightness beyond the factory settings?

SuperDIM only lets the brightness go below the minimum, not higher than the maximum on stock.
I agree with genothampi ,the brightness in NEO V is very low compared to my X10 , there should be a way to increase the brightness higher than the maximum on stock or maybe the devs find a solution for that .
happy new year to every one
The MIUI ROM apparently does increase the brightness upto a crazy amount xD
Try it :
Should be ported to Stock
you use the light sensor of the phone? on my xperia neo I have disabled the sensor light (root+Disable Auto Brightness PLAY) and now the screen is beautiful, too bright. the Brightness options (in display) I have put in 60%, and still bright

first I have modified the file hw_config.sh using root explorer, but I don't liked, because when I turn on the phone in a dark place the screen was dark, then I had to turn on the phone always in a bright place
now I use a app, Disable Auto Brightness (PLAY) and works perfect now, when I turn on my xperia neo the app disable the sensor light and the screen stay maximum brightness
anything, just ask.
sorry for my English

I have already fixed the brightness on my rooted Neo V using the app ( disable auto brightness ) but my question to you is , would you port the hw_config.sh from the s.e tweaked Rom since you are saying that the light sensor disabled by default , so this way we can apply that to the ROM and no need to install the ( disable auto brightness ) .
thanks in advance

or you can try disable sensor for free with method used in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426948
I have bought Hatcyl's app but I like more this free method, because it has lower minumum brightness which is important if you want good battery life.
Hey,
Do you use Auto brightness or no?
If not, why?
I use auto as it doesn't affect my battery much needed screen look nicer when it's brighter. But there r pple tat use lowest brightness settings for battery savings reason
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Yes, yes I do.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I don't. It drain's my battery more than manual settings. Slide your finger over notification area to adjust brightness manually.
I'm on MIUI so I can change from the notification bar. It depends, if I'm charging I'll have full brightness to show off the sexy SAmoled+ display. But if I'm out and trying to conserve battery I'll have it on auto.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Off.
Use quick settings via notification, hate brightness changing all time so its all way down except when need to up brightness manually.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Off. Main reason is to conserve battery. Most of the time super amoled plus display is bright enough even when close to lowest brightness. Like the others said there's a shortcut to manually increase the brightness through sliding the notification bar when needed say for example outdoors.
i never use the auto feature
Always auto.
I just can't unblock my handset when I'm out (thanks to australian sun) - I see nothing on the screen.
Unless there's a way to manually update brightness when lock screen's on ?
Off and almost always at maximum brightness. When using it in the dark (when I should be sleeping) I lower the brightness via the notification bar shortcut (that also works when the screen is locked using WidgetLocker).
No. Manual adjust is easy and more satisfying.
no!not working good....
inviato da sgs2
I do. Tried both and found that it's just as annoying having to adjust manually as it is when auto is slow

Never..... it ( almost) allways in max. It's a shame to use that beautiful screen on dull settings.

Im using auto.....because home is not like outdoor.....if i make it at the lowest i wont see any thing in the outdoor.......i have it on because it stimulate the sun and the low light condition.....plus .. i dont care about the battery...i bought the phone to use it and enjoy it not to sit and watch the battery all day long and keeping myself from enjoying this coool phone...........
I use Auto; I might try manual and adjusting it now and then but at the moment I'm content with auto.
I kept it off cause you can easily changed the brightness just by sliding the notification bar
No , I use manual so I can adjust it to the way I like it.
Always off, adjust the brightness level where you suit.
Auto mode may drains battery life.
I do use auto bright
It's good to enhance your view on the mobile at any light conditions
And IT DOES NOT drain your battery . it's,false thoughts guys belive me

What you are saying? Sure that Xperia S have auto brightness ! You probably are not able to set it
It has auto brightness xD
Try to buy some glasses...
But without custom rom or app you cannot control it.
Cyanogen mod or app ( widgetsoid) can control it very easy.

It has auto brightness. You can go to the Service menu, Sensors section and there you will find Light sensor, there you will see its current values, as far as I remember they are 0..12 or so, but that doesn't really matter, I want to find where the dependency between Light sensor value and brightness is coded.
You should ask some rom dveloper for some info :-/

I found this useful post.
In ICS we have it in /system/etc/als_curve and there we have 4 folders: 0, 1, 2 and 3 with limits and parameters. I assume these are 4 zones of brightness (0-25% on folder 3, 25-50% in 2, 50-75% in 1 and 75-100% in 0).
We have to change the parameters, as in the post I referred, but personally I didnt understand almost anything, so we need to try... If someone will be trying too, let me know your results!
I have found an easy way to set auto brightness and it works beautifully:
Download and install quick settings.
When you are in quick settings, tap "customize", tap the small tool icon next to brightness, and you will be asked whether to enable light sensor.
Once enabled, you will be able to use auto brightness through quick settings app.

Why couldn't they just add the option into the settings like everyone else??? Is it really that hard?

That is their style.
Go and send them mail to change it.

It is enabled by default even without 3rd-party apps. The reason of all this is to make its range bigger, more noticeable.

I also really don't understand why Sony cannot put this option just in the brightness settings.... I have had a long time thought that the SXS doesn't have auto brightness at all but dunno that its in fact hidden somewhere which can be called out easily by a 3rd party app !
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
It does have auto brightness, it just works a little different from what we're used to so far. You can find the brightness control in Settings->Display->Brightness (at least that's where you find it in Gingerbread). Now, the thing that creates so much confusion, is that this control shouldn't be called Brightness, but Visibility. What the phone does (and imo this is really clever), is that you move the slider to adjust the visibility of the screen best suited for your eyes and then the phone will automatically adjust the amount of light the LEDs glow using an intrinsic curve so that the same visibility is provided outdoors and indoors. You can test this. Set the slider halfway and then go outside, in the sun, and cover and uncover the light sensor a few times. You will see that the screen is dimmed and brightened up while you do that as the phone tries to maintain it's visibility to the setpoint you chose by moving the slider. Simple and clever, huh? What some may argue, is that the brightness variation is not aggressive enough, and they may have a point. Personally, I don't need to move the slider more than 20%, as the screen is perfectly visible even on a sunny day (of course, that is unless the sun directly reflects in the screen, but I found this happens only if you hold your phone on purpose and it is not a comfortable position).
Hello,
In my lt26w there is no Visibility submenu. But it looks like the application "quick settings" has make a trick.
Best Regards,
Vlad
