How to enable auto brightness on Xperia Ray? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

I found that Xperia Ray have Ambient light sensor from the white paper, but i can't use it on stock roms or CM7, can someone enable this?
this is the link of white paper
http://dl-www.sonyericsson.com/cws/download/1/997/193/1308295710/ray_WP_1.pdf
thanks!

Good question!
I also found in the whitepapers that the Xperia mini pro (sk71i) has the same ambient light sensor but when I check with android tools like "Sensor List" the only thing that could match is the Proximity sensor. That one goes from 1 to 0 if you get close to the top (blocking the light?).
APDS9702 Proximity

The sensor is enabled by default

how? i can't feel that

With my HTC Desire Z I had the "auto brightness" option. On this one I don't. Are you sure it is enabled? Do you have any clue what sensor it would be in the list of for example android app "sensors list".

As of Stock Rom 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 there is no 'auto brightness' option.
But the ambient light sensor is always working.
If you take it outside in bright sunlight, you will notice that the screen automatically gets brighter. That's how you can tell the sensor is always on
I assume they haven't put auto brightness in as a feature because maybe some people want to save battery/adjust their screen brightness for indoor use.
But when the surrounding light passes some threshold (ie, outside), the auto brightness feature overrides your user settings...

thanks.....so, can i make a option for this?

No, there's no select-able option for it. It's always on.

check "brightness level" widget in android market. I just added to my desktop and it has an autolevel option. Seems to work. But I can't say if it's really off when you select only a percentage.

LOL! Check some of the newer topics. Many users want to disable the auto brightness. The topics have some info for rooted users. But as said it seems to be enabled by default.
It's not linked to the 2.3.3 update though. My desire Z also had that Android version and still provided the auto brightness option in the display menu.
It also seems to be the reason of the flickering screen on low backlight setting. That is in fact annoying.

So, how can i disable the sensor? I want my screen always to be bright, i hate this auto adjusting

Thanks. I wanna keep my warranty though

If there is a light sensor on my ray then it must be disabled.
Mine does not react to any changes in light at all - even if I manually cover the whole of the top of my phone in my fist.
I also find that the screen is odd outside in the sun. It looks exactly the same if it's set to 25% brightness or 100% brightness (both are just as easy to see). I can only notice a difference in brightness when i'm indoors or if it's dull and cloudy.
FYI i'm on 4.0.A.2.368 - 2.3.3

Screen Auto Brightness is not working on my Xperia Ray too.. I don't know why this feature was disabled... I tested light sensor and that works but brightness never changes... Is it because of old 2.3.3 firmware i have ? I didn't update to latest yet..

I don't know if it's just me but sometimes my screen kind of flickering.
Is it true that it's because of the light sensor just too sensitive?

For me,Xperia Ray owner are very lucky.
Because the light sensor is implemented very bad on Xperia Mini for example.
The screen flickering and your eyes cry. : (

Yes,is a very boring problem.
The Xperia Mini has two big problem.
-Touchscreen lag
-Flickering screen

Check out this post on the Xperia Arc - works great just the same for the Xperia Ray. Also the linked program well depicts the relation ambient light value, brightness setting and the resulting screen brightness.

[Q] Flickering screen each time screen is turned on.

Hello, I just updated my mini to the latest 4.0.A.2.377 firmware, and now each time I wake it up from locked the screen is flickering a little, really annoying..
Anyone else has the same problem?
Update:
The screen doesn't flicker at all when connected to a charger. Obviously then this must be a software problem and not hardware. Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences?
Sent from my ST15i
Yes same here. But it so happens when I'm in a low-light environment.
This is normal I guess
Sent from my SK17i using XDA App
No it's not normal. It wasn't like this before, it started after I updated..
It doesn't bother me at all, that's why I never noticed it before I've updated it.

What's the problem??
I noticed the flickering when I set the display brightness to a low level (<50%) and whenever the screen adjusts to the background light so it seems to be caused by the light sensor...
Yeah but my screen also flickers when the phone is locked and turned off and you press home button to wake it and the first second its awake the screen goes from full brightness to non and back to full again. This wasn't there before :/

The brightness of the screen is very normal, and the absence of an ambient light sensor is a disappointment – the brightness requires a manual adjustment every time you go out.

Taken from here
And also SE support center confirmed that it does not have a Ambient Light Sensor.
Then it would seem very stupid to have autobrightness as default and no option to turn it off if the phone doesn't have a light sensor.. Hope they add that option in a future update!

Use power widget and turn off auto brightness. It will not flicker a lot like before. I used this on my mini.

It does have a light sensor. I just read the manual and it says so.

According to a couple different sensor detecting programs, there is no light sensor. Maybe the sensor is defective?

What is people smoking?
Of course there's a light sensor, why else would the screen dim up/down at all?!
As for the app not seeing the sensor, my guess would be that the sensor's just made differently or actually being in direct circuitry with the screen/backlight, and the two are recognized as one.
I haven't heard anything on the subject, but i would imagine that it's fixed in the next update (2.3.4).
Any fix for this?

Ehnhance maximum brightness

Guys as you know, Xperia neo's brightness (maximum) is very low compared to ARc or even X10 mini pro. My mini pro at 50% is equal to the 100% brightness of my Neo. Is there any trick or hack or whatever it is to increase the brightness above 100%? Something to override the maximum brightness? The screen is annoying under the factory set max brightness as the white colored pages look yellowish.
Is there some way to increase the brightness beyond the factory settings?

SuperDIM only lets the brightness go below the minimum, not higher than the maximum on stock.
I agree with genothampi ,the brightness in NEO V is very low compared to my X10 , there should be a way to increase the brightness higher than the maximum on stock or maybe the devs find a solution for that .
happy new year to every one
The MIUI ROM apparently does increase the brightness upto a crazy amount xD
Try it :
Should be ported to Stock

I have already fixed the brightness on my rooted Neo V using the app ( disable auto brightness ) but my question to you is , would you port the hw_config.sh from the s.e tweaked Rom since you are saying that the light sensor disabled by default , so this way we can apply that to the ROM and no need to install the ( disable auto brightness ) .

Neo V ~Flickering Screen

As the title says my screen brightness flickers :O

Yeah, I got the same problem with mine xperia neo v...
I think ambient light sensor is calibrating or something... I got that flickering around 1 time in day.
Same problem here...on low brightness...
So i'm not the only one facing the issue
Happens only once in a day so it could be what armando101 said

it is caused by fluorescent light sources. You can see them flicker too when you capture it with a camera:
Action at 0:40
Phew
Thought something was wrong with my phones LCD
Thanks mate
If you're annoyed by this, try installing SuperDim from the Market. It can lock brightness levels. You need root, through.
Also, don't set the brightness too low with SuperDim or the screen won't turn on when you unlock the phone.
I can confirm that this happens when the light sensor adjusts the screen brightness. If you go to Settings > Screen > Screen brightness, and here set it to max, you will disable the auto brightness feature and the flickering should stop. It will have negative effect on your battery performance though.

im not really sure for my answer, but try it, just remove the auto brightness, because sometimes the sensor are to much sensitive when it become dimmed in the area. just try it nothing will lose if you will try, but you will gain more....

You can't disable auto brightness without root.
Anyways the app is here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hatcyl.android.Disable_Auto_Brightness&hl=en
I'm using it mainly for games. Really annoying when the screen dims just because your hand covers the light sensor.

light sensor

hi all, I noticed that light sensor doesnt work properly, when I go from dark to light area, the brightness increases but when I go from light to dark area the brightness wont decrease, on honeycomb it worked properly, anybody else experiences this problem?
Same here, it goes bright but does not decrease.
I use the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rubberbigpepper.DisplayBrightness&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInJ1YmJlcmJpZ3BlcHBlci5EaXNwbGF5QnJpZ2h0bmVzcyJd
make an invisible slider on the edge of screen to adjust brightness.
is there any way to make it work properly?
Don't think so. Its pretty much unusable now.

There are lots of negative comments about light sensor, but i have to say it works well to me on ICS. Could be possibly massive amount of defected devices.
Lightsensor doesn't work for me either - too bad, hope it will be corrected.
Perhaps it's because I'm running ICS "General Channel".

Do the sensor dim the light in the same session for you?
Here it turns up the light but not down again.

Same here, adjusting upwards works fine, but it doesn't adjust downwards in low light conditions.
I have tried two apps that turns the light down again, custom auto brightness and lux auto brightness.
One small problem. The pad will crash on pattern unlock after sleep. I Also the light sensor will not work s after wake up sometimes.

I'm guessing no one has had any luck with this issue but I figure I'd necro the thread anyways. My light sensor sucks also. I used 'Android Sensor Box' to get the values coming out of the sensor. It only displays either 40 lux or 280 lux which is obviously not right. This is on Cyanogen 9, stock t-mobile ICS and the rooted international gingerbread(can't remember which one exactly).
So I was wondering if anyone who owns one of these has ever gotten a sensor value that makes any sense.
thanks
nope,
I use instead display brightness https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rubberbigpepper.DisplayBrightness&hl=no
create an invisible brightness slider on theedge of the screen.
Try using custom auto brightness with the auto brightness on (there's a setting in that app that disabled the system auto brightness at screen on. Turn it off).
The original kernel only recognized 3 light levels. If you use bart's kernel it will recognize 6 levels.
Yes, I think there's a software problem because both app (lux and cua) crash hard in HMP, but I don't think fixing it is a priority.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk 2
How to use custom auto brightness without crashing the tablet.
There are 2 options that should be followed, other settings can be adjusted to your liking.
1. In preferences, Check Use pulsed sensor mode. Basically this option will make the app read the sensor itself instead of listening the sensor value given from the system.
2. In advanced preferences, set the sensor update speed to either half sec or 1 sec. I tried normal, but the app won't read the sensor value, so probably the slow normal maximum setting only works if you get the sensor value from the system.
You can set disable system auto brightness. I recommend it before because the setting was a "hack" which was making the system read the brightness value thus the app can get that value. Right now it's recommended that you check the disable system auto brightness.

Light sensor in mini pro - what the hell is this?

can anyone tell me what the duck is that thing installed in my mini pro that is supposed to be a light sensor? it does control the brightness level depending on ambient light, but it doesn't work with apps that allow you to change brightness according to your own rules. I've tried Lux Auto Brightness and it acts as if the phone didn't have any light sensor, but when I go to service menu and test the sensor, it does react. so what's going on there?
Sloppy implementation, I guess.
Why are you trying to use third-party software for it?
Most of 3rd party test service shows LIGHT SENSOR,the mini pro have AMBIENT LIGHT SENSOR.Both act same, but different driver and name
