I recently started getting a low space warning that I can't get rid of, despite having moved all possible (i.e. non-system, non-widget) apps to SD via built in app2sd. I know the right solution is s2e, I just didn't want to format my card because it took me forever to get all my music copied onto it in the first place. Well SD cards are cheap, I ordered a bigger one, and I'll format it for s2e and all will be well again.
But in the meantime, I noticed that I stopped getting "green" connection status, and was no longer receiving GMail or Talk notifications. After a restart, I got a good connection again, until the low space warning reappeared, at which point the connection went white again.
So what's up with that? Is it by design that when low on space, the phone won't connect to Google anymore? If so that seems pretty silly, considering there's still 20 mb available.
You've basically answered your own question, but yes, Android is notoriously bad at handling low memory situations. You simply must maintain a certain amount of free space or things will inexplicably stop working correctly. My recommendation to you is to delete an app or two that you rarely use to free up some space until you get the new SD card set up.

My X10s internal storage memory is getting low, like 75MB, what do I do to remedy this, and what's causing it.
it's normal.. Android fills the memory - upto a preset threshold.. so when the "user" calls for a frequently used app, it's likely to already be in memory, allowing it to launch it more quickly..
If you're having problems with the phone getting slow, then suggest something like Task Manager to kill apps that you don't need to be held in memory - BUT only use it to kill apps that don't automatically restart, otherwise you'll only end up fighting with your phone, and using more battery!
No , I mean the internal storage memory, not the RAM, it's getting low. And I'm not sure why.
Ah.. I see.. well the obvious answer is that you've got a lot of apps on there.. ?
If it's not that, then could be a crappy app that's storing stuff on the phone, rather than the SD card...
Try clearing the caches of EVERY APP and UTILITY. I do it every night before I go to bed.

I've run into an oddity that I'm hoping someone could help explain. First, I'm running Cyanogen Mod 6 (update-cm-6.1.2-0.11-Milestone-signed.zip) on my HTC Aria. I've been running CM6 since last December.
A couple of weeks ago, my gmail account quit syncing and I stopped receiving text messages. Over the course of the last 2 weeks, I've gotten it working on and off. What finally got it working was to address the other informational message I was getting (running out of memory on my phone).
I was down to < 10% of the phone's main memory remaining. I found out that if I rebooted and cleared the cache, it would work again until the cache grew and brought available storage on the phone (I have an 8G SD card in it) to under 10% left.
Any app that I can move to the SD card has been moved to the SD card but it appears those apps still have some amount of data that they store on the phone? This AM, I finally removed some apps completely that were nice but not necessary for me to have on the phone and I haven't had a problem.
So, does anyone know if this is a known issue? Or, just a coincidence that text messages and emails stop when running low on memory.

First off, Why are you using the milestone Cyanogenmod6?

I was actually on that one (still have that zip on my sd card) but, when it started to not receive txt messages nor gmail, I went looking for something newer than what I had installed to see if there was a different version of Cyanogen that would work better. I tried CM7, a liberated Froyo, and the official Android 2.2 from AT&T (so I had to search through the forums to find out how to re-root my phone). I think I just ended up on the Milestone build (and since it was a CM6 like I had been using since Dec, I just quit trying new versions).
I just put the 6.1.1-Liberty back on. It had 24MB of internal stoarge left (out of 185MB). I moved a 15MB app from my SD card to my phone to get the available memory down below 10%, giving me the message about being low on memory. I sent a txt msg to my wife and she responded but, the response has not come through after waiting 5 min (while mine got to her phone in a few seconds).
Could there be an undocumented feature to prevent emails and txt messages when there's not much free space on the device? I cannot move Messaging nor Gmail to my storage card so I can see why someone might put a limit on that to avoid filling up the phone storage. Does anyone know if this feature is customizable so I can make it go to 5% before ignoring email and text messages?
I'll make sure to stay on top of those warning messages and make sure my next phone has more internal memory.

Yes, I have heard of not being able to receive text messages when you are too low on internal storage. I don't know why it happens, but in general Android does not handle low memory situations very well and things just stop working properly.
Unfortuntely the Aria has very little internal storage, so it's difficult to avoid this problem. The best thing you can do is to start taking advantage of one of the various apps2sd methods (not the built-in Android one). There are basically two of particular interest:

This method should work with CM6, but is more complicated to set up. Once you have it set up, though, you don't have to change anything and can just let it work its magic.

This method only works on CM7, but is very easy to set up.
You mentioned that you already tried CM7. Did you try CM 7.1.0 RC1? I've been really happy with this build for the past month and would recommend it. Of course the added benefit is being able to use S2E.
I've had this issue before. If you're receiving the 'low storage' message, you'll stop receiving emails, texts, and even app updates begin to fail.
Just gotta clear up some space.
Yup, had the same but in my case the GTalk wouldn't start up. Def having low internal memory kills the phone without a good reason, specially because it's a percent rather than a hard number...
Do use a App2SD app that enables you to move the dalvik cache to the SD and you'll see a lot of space cleared. I recommend darktremor + the GUI (available the latter in the market)

One thing that I've done that I haven't seen mentioned is replacing the google apps (Gmail, Googlevoice, Maps, Market, Street...) in system/apps with the updated versions. Keeps the updates from stealing internal storage. As a heads up, the market app is the "Vending.apk" for those that did not know. I actually replace the apps in the rom I'm using (Liberated2.2.2) and reinstall that. Not including google apps I have 51 apps installed, 13 on the phone, 38 on the card and right now I have close to 116 MB internal storage available. I have a feeling that the 51 apps that I think is a lot is a drop in the bucket for some.
This problem has got to the point of forcing me to register on XDA forums. I have a Samsung G II running android 4.1.2 (jelly-bean of course) and over the past week the memory (storage) handling has gotten really bad. It's as if the OS has given up on storing items now. Problems include-
After taking, receiving or downloading a photo (generally over whatsapp but it occurs to other apps like wallbase) The photo will be stored on my phone for the day until i turn off my phone, now after turning it back on however the photos are gone just leaving a blank space which displays "unable to load" in the gallery.
Next issues is that my apps i now install get installed in the next dimension because they don't appear to be on my phone even when i do a file search or plug in the device into my computer. But here is where it gets crazy they are on my phone and do take space up, but it's no where to be found.
The OS now presumes i have an SD card even though i don't have one plugged in. Because of this! big games and Apps now now try to use this fake SD that doesn't exist and this causes them to give me errors along the lines of "Sd is full or inaccessible". Pffft
Please someone help me, this issue is annoying me so badly and is rendering my phone useless if it can't store data.
I appologize you were forced to register here @ this great forum and though you still might find your answer here,ironic,anyway.Have you tried wiping cache,dalvik and fixing permissions,are you even rooted?I did'nt see you mention that,so i have no idea,also,you might want to back up what you want to keep and format and partition your sd card,not sure how big your sd crad is either,so you might need a bigger sd card for all your stuff.I myself use a 32GB Sandisk,class 10 and it works great,never ran out of space or had any speed issues on my OG EVO.

Rooted? yes. I've deleted all the caches under the sun and still no results. And i have over 4Gb of free internal storage according to my phone. I have my data backed up but i'd rather have a direction to go before starting anything. :crying:

Hi everyone! So, I've been having a bit of an issue with my Galaxy S3 lately (and by lately, I mean it's been bothering me for the past few months, but until today I've been able to use my phone )
My phone is giving me an out of space message, and no matter what I do, I can't seem to fix it. When it first started coming up, it was a bit annoying, but today, my phone seems to have run out of so much space, it can't receive messages, take screenshots (even though it should be stored onto my SD card), or even use the Facebook app without it erroring.
I can't upload a screenshot to here (since my phone won't even let me take the screenshot ), but when I go to the storage settings, my phone says I don't have enough internal memory. It says I have 11.25GB total, and I'm using 1.85GB for applications, 5.27MB for pictures and videos, 34.30MB for audio, 14.14MB for downloads and 236MB for misc files. Somehow that means my 11.25GB space is all used up, so I might have to go back to school for maths, because something doesn't add up . It also says I have 4.30GB free space on my SD card, but that's not causing the problem (I hope)
I've searched for other problems like this, and all of them are for rooted phones, which doesn't help me because my S3 isn't rooted. Also, all of the problems I saw were when people tried installing an app and got the "out of space" error on Google Play store, and they had to delete the app's .odex file, which unfortunately doesn't help me

I usually have SD cards that are larger than the native storage of most of my devices however.... I always run out of room for apps. I wouldn't say I install everything I See but I do install apps I need for work (medical apps) which for the most part don't exactly take much space but some are known to take 300-1Gb at most. Anyway, my devices always seem to fill the native storage while the SD Card remains fairly unused. Here is an example of my phone.
So my main gripe/issue is: My SD cards are always fairly empty and only have contents I've actively copied over to them from my desktop or notebook. I am under the impression that most programs do not install the data to SD Card and use the native storage instead. Is there anyway this can change? Any tips to get more space (besides backing up pictures and deleting those, 700+ mb!).

I am in agreement with you, as I have progressed thru numerous phones too. After going the route of the first moto linux phone and then jumping aboard the Android system when the first G1 came out from HTC and have always had similiar problems.
There original solution was special purpose apps that would allow you to backup your apps to SD card, then other apps came along to allow you to actually run apps from SD Card but seems that not all apps can actually be accessed from SD card. I havent kept up with it all like I first did and have become rather lazy and carefree or even sloppy with how I maintain my devices files and apps organized. Much now to an overwhelming large mess of old devices and storage media not to mention profiles tied to email google accounts. Its difficult to even start over as every device wants to have a profile to sync to. It could entirely be possible to top out the memory on a brand new device after snyc to one or two profiles.
Also it seems for the average consumer that has a unrooted device it is impossible to thoroughly clean or interrogate the internal device memory . seems like the revisions of the android operating system makes file management of internal memory even more difficult to manage.
I didnt want to get too carried away but I totally feel frustrated as you do, sorry I dont have a solid technical answer to resolve your problem. I am asked all the time to fix my girlfriends tablet and I cant explain it to her where all her memory has disapeared to after a few factory resets. Doesnt seem to matter, if you load alot of apps to just give them a spin for a test ride. Even if you delete or move them to store on sd card . It seems alot of junk files still seem to reside in the internal storage and eventually will eat away at the memory until it gets to the point of inoperability. App managers can make the situatin worse by creating even more orphaned files and junk too. All this stuff is not accessible to view and review and manage.
The only answer is to have a rooted device and the expertise to properly manage this inaccessible memory?
Is there a decent file management that a nonpower consumer can rely upon?
