I have this problem:
Plugging USB Cable:
-charges the phone if plugged during restarting
-replugging the USB while turned on will not charge the phone
-won't bring up the USB screen (works before though)
-it doesnt say "USB not recognized" but it doesn't say anything at all
-works if in Download mode (I can even flash roms)
-won't mount in recovery mode
Plugging a wall charger
-charges the phone if plugged during restarting
-replugging will no longer charge the phone. (This is the most annoying part, I have to restart just to charge the phone)
I have tried on both Cyanogen and Litening ROMs, same behavior
I have the Korean Galaxy S2
I have tried connecting through a different computer and even the PS3, nothing gets recognized

Hi all,
All up until a few days ago, my computer/s cannot recognise my Samsung Galaxy S2. Whenever I connect my phone to my computer, the phone believes I am plugging in the charger.
I have attempted to turn on/off USB debugger, attempted the USB mass storage connection method and also attempted to use Winamp's automount option.
I thought it could have been my cable and I have tried different cables and phones and it seems my phone is the only problematic one.
Before this issue, usb used to connect very easily, even used for my car headunit.
Yesterday I was running the 2.3.6 firmware and recently changed to 4.0.3 and neither allow the usb to be working.
Has anyone encountered this problem and does anyone have a solution for this problem?

Did the USB work on previous firmware if so you have messed up the install revert to older stock rom firmware and test .
jje
It didnt stop working due to a firmware upgrade. It randomly stopped working when I was using 2.3.6 so i thought maybe upgrading would do the trick, which it did not.
Try doing a factory reset..
Yeah, did a factory reset when I changed from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3 and just tried again. No difference.
I did notice that this error may have occurred when I may have dropped the phone. Not too sure how this would affect anything but just putting it out there.
Did you drop it with the usb connected?
Sounds like its a hardware problem, just try flashing stock again to be 100%

Dropped whilst drunk unconnected to anything, did have a case on it however.

ICS is not an upgrade its an unstable beta rom not passed by Samsung for use .
Possible dirty USB ports .
jje
How would one proceed with cleaning the usb ports?
In the past I happened to have trouble connecting with the usb port and I solved unistalling and reinstalling Kies. Have you already tried?
I believe what I'm attempting to do is to even use the phone as a mass storage device. I used to be able to do this via straight windows to any computer and even my car headunit. However at the moment a cable is only recognised as a power source and not as a data connection.

just gave this a go, going to leave it overnight to dry. wish me luck
No luck but I have concluded that the USB port possibly could be broken. I'm wondering, does rooting the phone void warranty?
Unfortunatelly it does...
Wipe everything U can, flash back original firmware and do reset with factory JIG... Than U have chance to claim warranty. But its not 100%...
There is thred about reverting somewhere...

Try again but after restarting ur computer !
Does the computer see any external drives (whether you can connect to them or not)?
Does the computer make a noise when you connect or disconnect the phone?
My brothers galaxy ace has a problem with the usb port, the phone doesnt show that it is charging when the cable is plugged, also it doesnt show that its connected to a usb, and the computer doesnt recognize the phone. The battery doesnt show the correct percentage but we know its charging because the phone never runs out of battery. The computer or the charger is not the problem because we have checked it with my Ace and it works.
Our option to fix the problem is to wipe the battery stats, but in this phone we have not installed clockworkmod, and we cant root the phone because it has Froyo 2.2.1 stock firmware and we need the usb to root it.
Does anyone knows another method to root this phone, that doesnt use SuperOneClick? (z4root didnt work)
Does the factory reset wipes the battery?
Sorry for my bad english.
why not update to gingerbread first using the wifi update mode?
then reset to factory settings and if this doesn't fix the usb problem take it to service center.
warning, before starting update over wifi ensure battery is fully charged or use the the mains charger.
froyo doesnt has ota update
update with odin or kies
then you can install root and roms

Disclaimer:
I've searched all over the forum and found few close to my problem but this seems different
Background:
I recently flashed my Galaxy S2 International version with CM9 nightly build. Since then, when I turn off the phone and put it for charging, the battery charging animation stays like that till the phone is fully charged unlike the stock ROM where that animation disappears after some time.
Simultaneously I've noticed something else, when my phone is plugged to USB cable attached to my computer, a pop up appears at the bottom right (notification area) which says "USB Device not recognized" and in Device Manager it's listed as "Unknown Device"
I ignored it thinking that it might be an issue with the CM9 Build as it's not fully functional. I've had the phone that way for around 10 days.
Recently I thought of switching to XXLPQ(Official ICS Update) and I got into Download Mode but Odin doesn't see the phone. No "communication" establishing between phone and computer.
I also had CM7.1 on SD Card and I thought flashing that old CM might bring my USB functionality back.
So got into ClockWork Mod Recovery and flashed it. Flash was successful. But now phone is in boot loop with "Samsung Galaxy S2" with an exclamation.
If I try to press and hold the power button, it comes back to that battery charging screen even though phone is not plugged to either USB or charger.
I can get into download mode(Odin can't see the phone) but not into Recovery Mode.
Three things that I see as of now on my phone are the boot loop I mentioned above or Download Mode (but not recognized by Odin) or Battery Charging animation.
I'm sure there's nothing wrong with USB Cables or Drivers or Kies or anything else. Because my brother's S2 works just fine which is on "Stock ROM".
I need help. I'm sure that CM9 nightly broke that basic USB Device functions on the phone.
Please let me know if there is any alternative for recovering my S2. I know that the worst is, it goes to Repair Center.
But I hate to give up on this!!
Are there any other tools or recovery softwares which can be used to re-flash the phone other than Odin no matter what screwed up state the phone is in!?
Deleted - sorry, hadn't read your post properly.
firstly i want to ask does your phone charges? if it does it sounds like u dont have development option enabled.. or ur usb port is broken.. if it doesnt charges then im pretty sure ur usb port is broken...
about the recovery.. can u use ur SD card on ur brother's SG2 and put stock rom into it? and then insert it into ur SG2 and try flashing it throught CWM

Thanks for the response Warrez!
- Phone charges (but that battery charging logo stays like that)
- When I flashed CM9 nightly I'm sure I haven't checked or played with Development option (It's not enabled)
- And last, I'm not able to get into Recovery Mode as well (already mentioned above)
Any other inputs!?
I have the EXACT same problem
Me too exact same problem .
I've confirmed my setup is fine as it works with Odin for my tab 7.7
Exact same issue, stuck at Samsung logo with exclamation mark. Can't get into recovery, can get into download but computer says device not recognised .
I was running Slim ics at the time then about to switch to cm9 and siyah kernel

Well.. I made some progress in last few days! I've taken out the battery and got into Download Mode. I was holding buttons and my brother inserted the battery. What I did was I powered of the system and connected the phone while it was in "Download Mode". I waited for some time.. Say more than 3-4 mins.
Rebooted my PC and once it's back it wasn't saying anything. For my surprise I see the "Yellow COM" established in Modem. Without delay I grabbed recovery ROM which is posted in one of the sticky threads. Flashed the phone.
Now, it got little interesting! When the phone is booted back post flashing it shows that "MTP Device" even though USB Cable isn't plugged into it!
When I turn off the phone, it either reboots back without hesitation or ends up at "big green battery charging" animation!
To get back into OS, I have to get into recovery mode and then I use "Reboot System"!
And that "USB Device malfunctioned or not recognized" thing is intermittent.
At times it says that and at times it establishes "COM connection" in Odin.
I re-flashed old bootloader thinking that it might be a phone's basic operating driver issue. But that didn't solve the issue!
I've even flashed latest stock European ICS Firmware.
And with ICS, things got even more interesting!
It started throwing up new message "Charging Paused due to over voltage"
What I'm sure of is.. It's definitely got to do with CM9 ICS. Because when I was on beta official ICS before I switched to CM9 Nightly phone was working like a charm! As soon as I flashed CM9 Nightly, I started getting that "USB Device Not recognized" issue with the battery irregularities.
I wasn't sure how I could get the phone recognized in Odin. Hastily I flashed CM7.1 on CM9 compatible ClockWorkMod Recovery enabled Kernel. That is when the problem got more complicated!!
I'm about to give up and pay someone to fix it via Jtag.
I've tried several computers, several cables , multiple reboots and everything else.
Windows just still says usb device not recognized so the phone must be corrupted somewhere.
Please change ur USB cable, i had this problem n its only frm the cable.
I don't believe this.........
I had tried two other cables ( a nokia usb>micro usb and another one ) as i had lost my samsung usb>micro usb lead and both those said unrecognised device....
I had just given up, ordered a jtag repair and then my old dear finds the samsung cable!!!!
Bizarely it now recognises the phone.
Hi Guys
I am having the exact same problem and am still looking for a solution.
My phone is not recognised by the PC after installing CM9 Nightly and now I am stuck until I can get the device driver installed again so that I can use Odin.
I am using the official Samsung USB cable which worked fine until the CM9 flash.
I am assuming this is a common problem so am hoping that somebody can supply a fix asap.
Any help will be appreciated
Ta
I had the almost the same problem .. I took it to the place I bought from .. and fix it .. they told me it was a hardware problem ( I remember with the hard disk .. I forgot )
The same thing, after using the Custom ICS LPQ roms!!
Now there's no way i can't use Odin to flash official rom!

Last time I checked.. My phone is getting detected in Odin. But not always! Every 5 attempts it sure is seen by Odin 2-3 times. And it's on ICS 4.0.3 XXLPQ with "Charging Paused high voltage detected" message even though it's not plugged to charger or USB Cable.
My brother advised me to leave the phone that way and wait till it goes dead and then keep it dead for at least a week and then try charging it fresh with phone's stock charger. Now 5 days passed and I'm waiting for another 2 days to try this out!
Cheers,
A.

Gee.. Try this! Take the battery out of the phone and press the power button for few secs with the battery out. Take someones help to put the battery back while you are holding the download mode button combination.
When you get into download mode, leave the phone that way and do not plug it to the USB Cable. Power off the PC and wait of 3 mins. Now connect the phone to the USB Cable while the PC is still off and phone is in Download mode.
Turn the PC on and wait for till it reaches desktop and then give it 3-4 mins. Now launch Odin. If you have any luck you should see that "yellow COM"!
The same procedure worked for me! If you happen to see that "yellow COM" on Odin don't delay anymore. Just flash any stock ROM. 2.3.6 or 4.0.3!
P.S.
Odin may not see the phone on the first attempt. If so.. Repeat the steps for 2-3 times
All the best!
Cheers,
A.

After Rebooting I got the message Firmware update issue thingy. I can go to download mode thats no problem. The biggest problem here is that whenever i plug in my USB cable into my phone, the computer recognizes it and then throws it out. I plug in, i hear the sound buuuunnggg, I start Odin, Thick PDA, select the ROM, and click start and it doesnt even reaches to end with Cache I hear the sond boooonnggg and Odin says its Failed, (Phone Removed). And the phone isnt connected anymore. Can someone help me out please? I really dont know what to do.

Ive had the same issue but opposite. I tried to get a s2 in download mode using s3 cable. so end up result is s2 uses s2 cable and s3 needs s3 cable. do not mix up.
and try removing kies and reinstall it with internet connection so you will get latest drivers and then close kies from system tray and put the phone in download mode and connect using s3 cable and see if its works.
