[Q] Can webos be flashed to tab 10.1? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello I just got my new samsung tab 10.1 and have noticed that it is extremely fast. I ran some tests vs my friends ipad2 and I beat him everytime. I then saw a post saying that the ipad2 ran webos faster than the webos tablet itself so I wanna flash it on my tab and prove that the tab kills when it comes to processor speeds. anyone have a noob tutorial?

Jesus, why? That iPad on WebOS thing was something done in house at HP, if I'm not mistaken. We don't know how much functionality it even had....probably just enough to run some sort of benchmark test.
If you want to demonstrate how the Galaxy is better than the iPad, then show him all the things that you can do with Android that you would have to jailbreak the iPad to do.

Indirect Samsung Question...

how many of you guys who have a SGS2 also have a tab either 7, 8.9 or 10.1 and do you use it often or infrequently? I'm asking because I really want one but dont know if it makes any sense with our awesome phone. So input would be appreciated
I've got a 10.1 tab. I use it, but not a ton. Mostly for reading books, watching TV and movies, and Web browsing. It's great when traveling.
this is were im flip flopping I dont travel much i would mostly use it as a reader/ occasional gaming so I dont know if its more want than actual need/use. PS thanks for answering
i have the 3g xoom and a sgsII. lately ive been on my phone more but thats just cuz its new to me (only had it about 2 weeks now).
i like my xoom more for web browsing, email, and games due to the larger screen. its also easier to navigate between tabs in the browser.

I also have a CR-48 and a desktop, I'm starting to think a tablet would be overkill as sweet as they are
i have a cr-48 collecting dust upstairs somewhere. my desktop doesnt get much use except for hosting video and music to stream to my xoom or phone.

I've got a 10.1, use it all the time. A lot of the time at restaurants, my phone is only serving to tether the tab.
Task650 also has a 10.1 - in fact long before he started creating GS2 ROMs, he was maintaining Tab 10.1 ROMs. His are what I use on my 10.1.
I don't maintain a 10.1 kernel because it's a pain in the ass, and also pershoot knows his ****.
The 10.1 is a great device - even when stock! (other than Samsung's ****ty initial 3.2 update - they fixed it fast though.)
However it is getting a bit old now - The one complaint I have about the 10.1 is the crappiness of the Tegra 2. Unfortunately if you want Exynos you've got to drop to 7" screen size.
If Sammy releases an Exynos-based 10.1 or 8.9, I'm selling my 10.1 and grabbing it in a heartbeat. Tegra3 quadcore - not so sure, the Tegra3 will probably be as much of a disappointment in the quadcore market as the Tegra2 was for dualcores.
I have a 10.1. I don't use it a ton but when I do I love it. It is really nice for sitting on the couch and surfing or playing a game as well as for reading. If I had the choice I might switch to 8.9 though.

I have original Tab which I have given to my wife. I loved it and she loves it. I still prefer it as reading device than sgs2... if she allows me that is.

Hmmmm so now you have given me food for thought, maybe I should just wait till the new ones are released , if they are Exynos based get one if not get an existing one on bigger discount
I have a Asus Transformer 10.1 inch and a HTC View 7 Inch. I use them all very often I was tempted to pick up one of the new galaxy tabs but I'm holding out until quad core I might get the Asus prime next month
I have SGS tab 10.1. But I mostly use my SGS2. My wife uses the tab most of the time. As entropy mentioned tegra2 is not that good in handling here contents without using third party software. Also, I was watching fast five using pocket blu, the videos were quite choppy, but it played well on SGS2, until I rooted SGS2.

so it seems waiting it out is best
I used to use my tab for browsing and youtube only, which it is fantastic at, much better than my sgs2.
Then I put ICS cm9 Alpha on it.
The tab has become so much more useful that I've almost completely stopped touching my phone. I can blaze out an email significantly faster on my Tab than I could on a PC. And not only that but the multitasking is instant. You should see me use this thing when I'm emailing, grabbing info off the net, and Facebook chatting at the same time. I look like a mad man and something straight out of the movie Minority Report.
I love my 10.1

Galaxy Tab 10.1 vs Xoom 2

Hello,
It was hard to find the appropriate section for this question.
I will NOT ask here any comparison of the specs or other benchmark. I also hope this will not degenerate as a trolled topic.
I consider buying one of the mentioned tablets. I think both are good and if course I read a lot about both. Everyday my heart lean toward one or the other.
Posting in the Galaxy Tab forum is probably good actually.
Let's make it short: I generally like Samsung. I actually own a Galaxy S2 and I would not exchange for anything else.
Those topics often end up as competition when users try to comfort their own choice. I hope this won't be the case.
So back to the topic. Being a Samsung guy
I naturally preferred the tab despite a slightly higher price...until I tried a xoom (not the
Xoom 2).
I actually was surprised and disappointed by the Tab (7501).
I found it laggy.
I went back and forth between the 7501 and the mz601 and I found the xoom nicer to the eye. This may not have anything to do with the pure processing. The tab may be overall faster (no idea) but I could for example see an obvious difference when I opened the browser.
I did the test in a store, with the devices side by side. You know how it is in stores...you never know what has been done before do I rebooted both tablet.
I had in mind a video from YouTube showing the xoom booting in about twice the time of the tab. This is definitely not what happened. I will spare the milliseconds but the xoom was actually faster (maybe half a second....).
Now freshly booted, I compared again. Same result. Damn
I like the tab but again the xoom looks better.
I went home not knowing what to think....
Back to the store the day after thinking it may have been biased somehow.
I tested again with power plugged or not. No matter what, the xoom is faster.
I am witting this post hoping someone who tried both the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the xoom 2 could give some feedback.
At the moment, I am really tempted to go for a Xoom 2. The main killers of the xoom have been fixed (size and weight).
The 'best' tablet depends of course of the taste and the usage so let me summarize mine.
I play almost no game. Interest its mainly in browsing Web, watching photos/videos while keeping an Android device.
I have seen a few folks doing comparison of real use.I find that pretty cool. You start both tablet at the same time and run the same scenario such as opening the browser, going to the same url, then watching a video, etc...
I like those tests because in the end
I prefer a tablet that takes time to boot (I may reboot my phone twice a month...)and is more responsive later.
So can someone tell me why the tab is better?
Did I run into a defective model maybe?

I didn't see the Xoom 2
but if it can help you :
http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/05/motorola-xoom-2-review/
Question : why would you take a Xoom 2 if you can buy a Transformer Prime ?
The TF201 could be an answer indeed but considering the current problems, I don't feel like jumping in now.
Imo the prime its a great product with lacks in design. This will be fixed I am sure. I may wait until then.

Should I swap my iPad 2 for the Galaxy Tab 10.1

Hi all,
Was just wondering if it's worth me swapping my iPad 2 for the Galaxy Tab 10.1?
I've had a quick (really quick) play around on the 10.1, but the screen doesn't seem very responsive and smooth compared to the iPad 2.
I'm in no way at all an Apple fan boy, I much prefer Android as an operating system which is why I have an HTC Sensation, but I'm in 2 minds what to do.
Can the 10.1 be tweaked to actually respond to the stylus I use with my iPad 2?
Please Help
Yes, you should swap the iPad for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I have been enjoying mine since I got and have had no issues it is really smooth, in fact it feel smoother than the iPad. It is a great devices and with android and not being locked up like iOS it makes it even better!

Do you know which models are affected by the 'oil slick' problem?
From a truly non-biased point of view, I think the best answer is "it's up to you alone to decide".
What do you currently use your tablet for? What would you like to use it for in the future? Considering you're active here, I'm guessing there's a chance you'll want to root and ROM your Tab, are you waiting on the iPad2 jailbreak? Is that critical to you?
When I got my Tab I knew I was going to root and ROM from the start, I already had a jailbroken iPhone and wanted to see what all the fuss was about with Android. I consider myself a power user and I enjoyed exploring the nooks and crannies of the iPhone on my own, with my Tab most of it was documented somewhere.
I mainly use my Tab for reading techincal ebooks during my commute, and for reading my RSS and browsing when I'm too lazy to get out of bed. I didn't like the iPad's portrait interface which just looked like a blown up iPhone's. I was doing research on one at work and the more I used it, the more niggles I found I had with the way it treated me like a basic user. The fact I wasn't planning to game too much (if at all) was another reason I leaned towards my Tab.
As my sig shows, I liked Android so much I stuck around and got the GNex too.
P.S. My Tab has the oil slick problem. It's annoying to know my gear is technically faulty, but I can honestly not see the issue while the backlight is on.
The screen size really suited my and so did the weight for the tab 10.1
It really is up to you, but to be honest, you don't know the tab's full capabilities yet as it's not got an official ICS build yet!
i dont want to hijack this thread but i have a very small question so creating a new thread would be totally waste.
1)can any one tell me about availability of games on galaxy tab 10.1 compared to ipad2??
2) will Cm9 officially support Tab10.1??
3) can i play 720p mkv videos with softsubs without any problem?? My MKVs are generally H.264+AC3/AAC. I dont care if i have to buy a player to do it.
I am really confused between ipad2 and galaxy tab 10.1. HAve to buy any one of two.

Thanks for the informative reply.
Yes, indeed I was waiting for the iPad 2 jailbreak, but it looks like they've hit another hurdle,so I'm not holding my breath no more!
I do like the games on the iPad 2, some of them are fantastic, but Android seem to be lacking in the game department area.
They only have the following tablet apps listed on the android website:-
https://market.android.com/details?id=apps_tablet_featured&start=0&num=24
The camera on the iPad 2 is shocking, it's not even worth having one on there, not in low light conditions anyway.
Still in 2 minds what to do. I have android on my HTC Sensation, so do I need it on a tablet too.....

1) Games exist and run on both devices, sometimes the same game is on both iOS and Android, sometimes they are device specific. Don't really know what you're asking?
2) Yes, and there's a preview version available on the Tab 10.1 Dev forum right now, I have it installed.
3) Yes, I think so. Although I'm not entirely certain as I don't watch videos too much on mine, unless they're Youtube embedded in a webpage/RSS. There's something for the GNex out now though, that I have a memory someone saying they were running it on their SGT10.1 too. And I'm not 100% sure about subs tbh.

I used this list for a long time to find 10.1" HC-optimised apps: http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/motorola-xoom-apps/570-optimized-honeycomb-apps-list.html
(Note how I say optimised, not compatiable - if you're on Android 3.2 or later, there's a difference as they included a feature to expand phone apps to take up the whole screen).
The link you provided is the "Featured Tablet Apps" list, but I do feel there is less tablet-specific apps available for Android compared to iOS. However, the ones I need for my daily use exist, so that fact isn't such an issue to me. And it's hopefully only going to get better as devs move to the GNex and develop on a SDK that encourages phone and tablet interfaces to be designed and used in a single app download.
I don't use my camera on my Tab, so can't help you there...sorry.

[Q] tablets slower than smartphones?

Just bought my tab 10.1 like a week ago, but as soon as I turned it on, I could noticeably see it run much slower than my Desire..
By slow, I mean the homepages take so long to rotate, bringing widgets or apps to homescreen or relocating them takes a few long seconds etc
the actual running of apps is not a problem
dunno.. dualcore, 1GB RAM.. thought it would make me wanna throw my phone away but it's completely the opposite atm..
Stock with all the apps loaded and the system not cleaned up, yes the tablet will be a lot slower, the displays anywhere will almost never give you the real experience because its soo overwhelmed with crap to show how fast it is. If you keep tasks killed via the Samsung task killer and don't just leave the tablet to fend for itself then it will be just as fast as your phone, for a faster than phone experiance, root, and install task 14 or overcome and your tablet will cruise and do so much more and fastern than your phone
At least we couldn't brick our cell phones back in the 80s ... they were already bricks

I feel you dude, the tab is seriously slow on touch widz 3.1. Since its using the slowest dual core, the tegra 2.
My sgs2 is much faster in every way. Even apps are smoother.
Flash overcome rom made it much better since its upgraded to 3.2.
But still slower than a phone.
Finally the kang ics rom made it on par in terms on UI smoothness.
Sorry you receive so much bad comments here. Most people don't feel the pain.
After spending so much money, naturally we expect the best experience out of the box.
Sgs2 is great, superbly smooth without the need of any mod or custom roms.
But the tab out of the box experience is just bad.
Don't be a whiner, you already bought the tab, learn the flash custom rom and you'll be happy,
Despite being slower than sgs2, I still prefer using the tab as bigger screen is really much comfortable for browsing.
@Ray1, It isn't the whole idea of raging at someone over a touch device, Hell even the first Glofish/Windows based touch phones were slow as HELL, I just feel that people have forgotten what it's like to have, I don't know, patience?
Sure it's a smart device, but also realize that the loading is based on how much information it has to process, Compare a 4" screen to something that is 10" it's like comparing Windows 95 and Windows XP, In a 4" device you would have everything served asap only because the DPI is lesser compared to the tablet, I feel that your comparison of the fastest smartphone in the market at the moment versus the tablet which was supposed to be an upgrade of the 7" tablet is somewhat unfair. I guess some people can't learn to appreciate, and it's all about bringing up the "car theory" of what is the fastest.
Just so you know, no offence in any of this, but the tablet was built to handle ICS. If the Google Nexus was running HC or Gingerbread, you would even rage at how horribly slow it is. Don't blame the system for being slow, blame the OS, just a minor update, Smartphones had the evolution of smoothness from Eclair>Froyo>Gingerbread where as tablet's are still in their first era of figuring out its era of smoothness, however ICS is the perfection of what HC had failed to provide and they just didn't care about pushing it out onto the next HC update because it would be pointless to try and fix something that was way past it's testing phase, better example would be trying to upgrade a Windows XP when you have an i7, you wouldn't touch the XP now that you have an i7 now would you?
@Benzo I completely agree with you on your POV
Edit 2: I want to keep this on topic.
@xcly - Yes you are right it seems. Many smartphones are faster than tablets.
My wife's Droid (something) I can't remember the model, I just tested switched screens instantly while my tablet takes a second to render the graphics and move to a different screen. Sorry you're disappointed with your purchase.
My starting post:
Is this where that rant was?
Must have got reported and deleted.
So we can complain, but not complain about the complaining? Now that makes my day. LOL
What a double standard. But, still makes me laugh.
EDIT: Looks like this "is" where several posts got deleted, not just my own, because we "complained" with reason based explanations about posts complaining about bananas not being as red as apples. 'nuff said.
@ The Mod who removed my post(s) I send a thank you because it showed how old people get grumpy and vocal sometimes when they disagree with what's being stated.
@Misledz - It appears your latest post doesn't agree with the OP and gives reasoning. So I might expect it to be gone soon too. As will this one probably will be also. I'm off to bed.
get cm9
You should definitely try out the cm9 pre alpha build, my tablet was equally as slow, almost unbearably, to the point where there was lag when using the keyboard. But cm9 is quick and speedy and if you don't mind losing the camera on ur tab for awhile definitely worth the update.
ah well at least i know i'm not alone in this tablet slowness :/
you know.. i would've rooted it the first second i got it out of the box but it's not just for my own use so really don't have a choice on flashing a better ROM
will probably have to get meself a new phone instead lol
Tablets are also pushing more pixels than a phone with the same processor hence the UI lag

its been awhile since i check this thread.
seems that some post were deleted. lol...
seeing how long post gets deleted, i shall keep my opinions as brief as possible.
excuse for tab10 being slow due to big screen resolution is invalid.
galaxy note and tab 7.7 similar resolution, but they are very smooth with no lag.
great experience out of the box.
reason: they use the exynos chipset similar to sgs2.
the performance is great. such as loading apps, actually running them, scrolling, rotating. there is virtually no lag.
My hate here, and rant, is mainly towards NVIDEA and their hopelessly weak procerssor and GPU. tegra2 is failure, tarnish android image. so sad that all first gen tablet uses it. makes majority average users feel android is slow.
lets make playing field fair and compare base on category.
tablet: tab7.7 powns tab10.1 and every other tegra2 tab out there. benchmark and real life usage.
phones: sgs2 powns lg optimus 2x and motorola atrix(use tegra2 as well). if want to be more fair, just compare optimus 2x, since atric has qhd screen.
i always knew tab10.1 use tegra2, but i still bought it thinking there isn much difference(i was so naive at that time). but its really really bad. HC makes it even worst. as the thread starter mention, its really a shame tab slower than phone.
look at the competition. i'm not apple fan, but i admit it, ipad2 is just soooo smooth and fast. (of cos it has its limitation and weakness), but over all user experience is smooth. the tab10.1 in the out of the box state is just.....sad.(dont want to elaborate).
i'm not a whiner. since i spend so much $$ for it.
i force myself to learn about rooting, and flashing rom. now on kang ICS, the performance is in the acceptable range.
tegra2, the first dual core, also the weakest and slowest.
tegra3, first quad core. but i'm not interested, will wait and see what TI and samsung offer.
take a look how tegra 3 get powned by TI's dual core.
being the first does not guarantee good performance.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 with MIUI.
I have a P7500 3G with CM9 KANG ICS.
I have used both for web browsing and I did see my phone as faster until I set my CPU of my tablet to 1.4ghz.
It really has made a difference and my tablet browsing is awesome and quick.
I would also try using the Google Chrome Beta Browser. It makes web browsing a dream
Is there any way of speeding up the scrolling between homescreens? I prefer not to root.
Also for me the speed is disappointing. Used to the Ipad and Galaxy S2.
Without widgets it is somewhat faster but widgets is the nr. 1 reason to go for Android.
Huib
Wow this thread is over a year old now lol. You can't do much without rooting I'm afraid..
Disable all system apps you don't use and see if that makes any difference. Otherwise, it's root and freeze more apps or flash custom roms.

[Q] Some Confusions about Tablet S

First of all, our tablet has the same power horse as Galaxy Tab 10.1 ...but my friends tablet is much faster and snappier than my tablet S!
The Browser on his Galaxy Tab never jumps out like what happens to me. He uses stock browser of the galaxy tab...it looks different and never jumps out!
Also I have a PS3 and I didn't quite understand if I can use my tablet to control my PS3 or I can use my PS3 controller to play games on my tablet?!!!
If my concerns and questions are noob, plz forgive me!
Any suggestions about these?
I'm in the verge of selling my tablet because it is too laggy comparing to Tab 10.1 and Tansformer Prime!
FYI My Tablet is Rooted and I have not installed lots of apps, just couple of apps and no games...so no high expectations but still not happy!

The tablet can not control anything on the PS3
You can use a PS3 controller with the tablet, but you need an adapter to allow the USB cable to fit the tablet. Once it is set up it works very well.

If my concerns and questions are noob, plz forgive me!
Any suggestions about these?

Why don't you wait and see what the ICS update brings. It should be MUCH faster..
My tablet s wifi version is fast and smooth, I have no problem at all in browsing and it is not rooted.
Yes. This is the slowest Tegra 2 stock tablet that I have ever used, and yet they say it is fast smooth and quick. If I didn't have root to change a fewsettings and remove apps, I would be very dissatisfied. Now if only Sony would unlock their bootloader. Haha.

Maybe you have a faulty tablet, because the Sony Tablet S is the fastest Tegra 2 tablet I've ever used, which includes Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Eee Transformer.
Those who complained about their tablet, just wonder if they ever read reviews and tried out the tablet before buying it?
I did some homework, tried it out myself before pulling the trigger abd now I'm a happy user
Here you can play with sample tablet in Sony Shop or retailers, isn't it the case in other countries?
Sometimes the UI can feel a bit sluggish (especailly with a lwp)
but this thing runs Modern Combat 3 like a champ, never even a hint slowness even with lots of on screen action. I dont think this is an inheritently slow tablet. People just judge speed on how quickly the tab can scroll through homescreens and them obsess over it which is kind of silly.
I was one of the early adopters and got mine even one day before launch...so I just trusted my experience with Sony!
I have used Tab 10.1 and Prime and none of gave me a black screen when I used live wallpaper and closed a program and got back to home screen.
Also sudden browser closes and still WiFi that disconnects when I turn tablet off are not some thing you expect from Sony!

What fw are you running?
I have no problems with the tablet. Not a single one. And I'm rather a hardcore user...
No problems here. Sony table S works quickly and smooth. Nothing ever fails.
Hard to understand those problems.

You said your tablet is rooted you could try to use an CPU tuner? can not tell you if it works because i dont have problems with it, I even think the speed is faster then my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v also it is a known issue with the browser
I haven't seen this jump out of browser on any other tablets I used, I don't know why you say know isuue!!!
My biggest problem is that it slid of my car bonnet when i was putting on my shoes. Now there is a little light leakage in the middle at the bottom of the screen. Not too bad though. Word is honeycomb itself has a bugged browser and all versions are vulnerable to it crashing/3rd party browsers also. I find that it only happens when you are jumping around link really fast, have a fair few tabs racking up or some flash content is going on.
