I'm thinking of buying a tab but don't like that samsung has "branded" the OS now with touchwiz, is it possible to android, without samsung stuff, so as to get the updates ota when they're released? For example 3.2 is released but haven't made it to galaxy 10.1 yet?
Does one need to root the tablet to do this?
Are there any nice how-tos?
Buying a tablet or waiting for google to release their own depends on if this is possible.
Thanks for any help!

Yes you have to root to get 3.2 honeycomb. Right now some developers are developing vanilla 3.2 ROM for Gtab 10.1. And each time an update is released for honeycomb we have to wait for the developers to update their ROM, so that we can flash the ROM.
Another thing is that honey comb wont be seeing much updates as IceCream sandwich is just about to be released.
If you want to get updates directly from Google then you have to buy a Google Experience Device. but right now there is no pure google experience tablet (AFAIK).
I think I'm looking for the same thing, I want a 10.1 tab but without the Touchwiz mods..
But just to confirm that I understand you correctly, If I purchase one of these tablets it would be possible to de-brand it and remove the Samsung bloatware/Touchwiz stuff and thus run the basic stock Android by using one of the ROMS posted throughout the forums, which I'm assuming is limited to 3.1 as you say 3.2 is in development, not that version makes any difference to myself.

Yes. You can install any non-touchwiz ROM in the dev section(Blazer is the only one i guess) or use the 3.1 stock ROM

I am thinking of getting a tablet and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 looks very tempting. Before I pull the trigger however, there are some questions I'd like to ask.
- Are all Galaxy Tab 10.1 rootable and flashable with custom roms or are there revisions with a locked bootloader or other nasty surprises?
- Are the original roms stock Android or has Samsung put crap (something like what HTC does with its phones) on top of it?
- If that is the case, are there custom roms to fix this?
- Is Honeycomb 3.2 available for the Galaxy Tab 10.1?
- I heard many complaints about Honeycomb's speed: is it really that laggy/choppy?
- Is it true one has to install a program just to transfer files to/from Honeycomb tablets? One of the things I like most about my android phone is how I get file system access by just plugging it in, without having to install anything.
- Does Honeycomb have a Japanese IME?
- Is there a chance custom Ice Cream Sandwich roms will be created for it once the source code gets released?

1. Yes they are all flashable and you get really easy in the recovery mode.
2. Samsung always uses Touchwiz, but the only difference you see is the launcher I guess
3. Any launcher from the shop will fix this
4. No, and it might not even come because ICS ;D
5. On stock yes, it is anoying. Once you have a custom rom, it's al fixed
6. No, still works with plug and play ^^
7. Idk, but if it hasn't than a custom rom probably has it
8. No doubt there will, Cyanogenmod 9 would probably be one of the first build from source. If Samsung is faster then the Cyanogenmod devs you'll see some customs roms build from Samsung ICS' before that.

Hi guys
Can anyone tell me if I have a Tab and have not applied the TW-update(still on vanilla android), will I be able to get ICS when it releases or do I have to wait for Samsung to release their update?
Yes, you will never get ICS if you don't apply Touchwiz. This is because the IP address of the registration number will conflict with the binary of the update MD5 sum.
Just kidding, but a silly question demands a silly answer. Yes, you can get the ICS update, but if you're waiting for the OTA update, it will come from Samsung and probably have Touchwiz baked in (and will probably not happen for a few months). Get a custom ICS ROM when they become available.
Thanks for the reply
My wording might have been a bit off/stupid.
To clarify
If I don't apply the TW-update (keep vanilla android) will I be able to apply ICS when Google release it (sometime soon hopefully) or will I still have to wait for Samsung to do their tweaks first
or
am I dependent on Samsung either way
i think you will probably get a ics ROM sooner in one of the forums of development. Otherwise you will have to wait for quite some time...
Seeing how utterly corrupt the last OTA i downloaded from samsung (the 3.2) was. I rooted and installed a custom rom, and damn it was worth it. Even if samsung pushed out a ISC early, i'd still not download it from them.

Google doesn't support Samsung devices. Google provides Samsung with Android, but Samsung pushes the updates. Samsung will probably modify the update with Touchwiz before they send out the OTA.
Hi all,
I just got my hands on a galaxy tab 7.0 plus and was hoping to build a rom for its community (no one has really built a rom for 7.0, its a small community and we just got CWM).
Ideally I'd like to kang together a stock Honeycomb 3.2 rom, free of touchwiz. I was hoping to port over one of the Google I/O Roms for the 10.1. I figure our devices are close enough that I can try tossing over the build props, make sure to use the boot/recovery images from the 7.0 and maybe, just maybe, get lucky. Or at least have a good start.
The problem is that I can't seem to find any of the Google I/O roms, past 3.1. Do those device not get updates? Is there another Touchwiz free rom I can start from? I remembering reading a while back that TWUX is an optional update for the 10.1. I've been looking around, but I'm have a heck of a time finding links that clearly imply I'm dling a Touchwiz free rom. Most of the just say "Stock" which is a bit ambiguous.
If someone would be kind enough to point me to an ODIN and CWM mod version of the sorta rom I'm looking for I'd be greatly appreciative(and hopefully if I can get this out the door, so will 7.0 community)
Thanks!

As far as I know, the i/o tab never got 3.2. And there are no 3.2 ROMs for the GT10 without touchwiz.
Well that's no good. You wouldn't happen to know the chances using a 3.2 kernel on 3.1?

Considering that Pershoot maintains kernels for 3.1 and 3.2, I'd assume there's a difference. But I'm not a dev, just an enthusiast. I'd try PMing Task650 or one of the other ROM devs. They're more than happy to help new folks.
Im a student and im planing on using my tab for classes (taking notes, etc). I found this really good app https://market.android.com/details?id=com.writepad but it says that galaxy 10.1 owners must root their device to install (touchscreen tune) https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vital&hl=en
I really need this app, but i don't know if once rooted I'll be able to update to ice cream sandwich or any other future updates. Can anyone tell me if I'll be able to update?? Any help will be great!

If you root you will not get the OTA updates. CM9 will be out for rooted tabs way before the OTA update (not to mention that it will probably be vastly superior), so you'll get ICS, just not from Samsung...
I was able to update from 3.1 to 3.2 via Kies' after rooting. I just lost root, had to reroot... Though, honestly, I cannot fathom a reason to take an update loaded with tons of bloat when there are 100% better roms available here to flash in - and painlessley I might add.
Thanks for the answers, do you know if a rom for ics is abailable? and do uknow of any good roms?

No stable ICS ROMS yet - keep an eye in the Development section below for updates.
You have to match the ROM with your device. I have a wifi only Tab, so I use Galaxy Task V10.
there are ics roms....just have some bugs...
take a look: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1425631
Is there any site that i can find out to which models can i official and unofficial install the new android 4.0.3 or newest?
A lot of thanks.
clockworkmod.com and under rom manager it will show you all roms for your phone. if your unrooted google it
I would say this is the best site for that. Just find your phone and see if it has been developed for it. 4.0 can't run on everything without a bit of tweaking on a phone by phone basis. The developers on here do that for you.
It is hard to unlock any android mobile phone to install it a rom that is unofficial and if it is easy BEFORE i installed the new unofficial rom is there a way to make a COMPLETE BACKUP of the android phone so anytime i want i can make a COMPLETE RESTORE to factory defaults with official android version.
A LOT OF THANKS FOR ALL.
cyanogenmod.com
Device compatible with CM9 are Android 4.0.3 IceCreamSandwich
To which sites i can see the OFFICIAL android 4.0.3 supported mobiles phones?
The samsung galaxy s plus i9001 does it support it?
And if don't where is the way to install an unofficial android 4.0.3 for samsung galaxy s plus i9001 phone?
Not as such...
I haven't found any comprhensive listing of ICS ROMS + supported devices.
Your best bet is to start from your device and find which ROM's (if any) are out for it. Some devices may never get support, some already have it, some are in between.
Much as I love Cyanogenmod, I can't get a functional CM9 (that is, ICS by Cyanogen) that will work on my Nexus S 4G. But I did find a list of ROM's for Nexus S 4G and by elimination found one that works flawlessly.
Be careful, follow steps closely, and RTFM first!
