Honestly I think HTC is shorting us by not giving us 3.0 so the only reason I'm going to get this is we can port 3.0 to it. So what are the odds? How hard is going to be?
I guess they want more development time to set up Sense on Honeycomb and possibly to push it out sooner so people get this rather than Xoom...

Does the digitizer make porting Honeycomb more difficult (i.e., because it's not designed for styluses)? I'm on the fence about the Flyer, but developer support would be a huge plus.

I feel the same way although I'm 99% sure ill get it anyway. I don't see the point in 10" tablets. If I was going to carry a bulky device, I'd sooner take my laptop as its far more useful and weighs abt the same as the 10" tablets.
Have used the Galaxy Tab for a few months now and its the form factor which makes is useful to me - will fit in your pocket if you really need a free hand.
My only other concern is performance. With the majority of honeycomb tablets sporting the Tegra 2 chipset, does this mean apps will be designed with those specs in mind? Anyone know how the flyers Qualcom CPU?
Why want to port a buggy honeycomb if around 3 months later (Juni or July) there will be a official 3.0

No offense intended, but your question comes across ass a little troll-ish. Assuming you genuinely want an answer though:
1) Because apps for 3.0 are designed for tablet form-factor. If you have used any of the 2.x (or even earlier) tablets, you will know that many apps look horrible because they are either scaled up to full screen, or only appear as a 'small box' in the middle of the screen.
2) I love XDA - the Devs here are top-notch and I never have issues running early versions of the ROMs that are cooked up by XDA devs. The releases here are always way ahead of the manufacturer releases and that's kind of the whole point of the site. It lets DEVs get familiar with new platforms so that when oficial releases come out, they can be quickly ported to the 'official' build when HTC get around to releasing it.
3) Never hold your breath waiting for manufacturers to release updates. HTC are relatively quick to release updates compared to most manufacturers, but waiting for official updates can lead to pain and disappointment.
I was wondering this as well, but more in a general sense. I got an ipad from my work for winning a contest, I played with it, and I can't stand apple crap. So I'm going to sell it, looks like I can get about $450 for it on ebay. So I wanted to take that money and get a android tablet, and I was thinking I would wait for the honeycomb tabs to come out and come down in price a little. But then I thought why do that?? Especially since i'm running gingerbread on my Evo and it runs freaking awesome!
So any worries hardware or other with buying a froyo tab and rooting it and getting a honeycomb rom later? Any min specs one should look for etc..? I know it's slightly off topic sorry, but not really sure where I should post this
Thanks!!!
Do a little research next time, it WILL be released with Honeycomb. I can't post the link cause I don't have more then 8 posts, but if you google it, HTC tweeted that it will be released with 3.0.

And to top it all off the system dump can not be deodexed. I have even tried myself. The only version of 3.0 that can be ported is SDK and nothing works on it... T-Mobile will be releasing an honeycomb tab but know Google it will be locked too... And its not HTC's falt honeycomb will never meet sense. Google will not allow any overlays of any kind of honeycomb. That means no blur or sense...

PS. The leak is great but still has some bugs.
Any News ? I really wanna have Honeycomb
Please [email protected] here
Man, I'm also getting very frustrated.
1. The View gets no love from Hulu+ or NetFlix, even though the Flyer is officially supported.
2. STILL don't have the new Android Market, so I can't download movies on WiFi. (Since NetFlix doesn't work for crap over the air, I can't watch movies on the tablet.)
3. The pen is all but useless. If I could use it as a stylus, that would be great... but as it is, it's an $80 paperweight.
4. Still no $$**&## video chat in Google Talk. Grrr!!
In the end, my View is a $400+ Kindle. If I wanted an e-reader, I would have bought a Kindle 3G and saved myself the $200 on the purchase price, plus the monthly fees.
Are there ANY tablets on the market right now that work with Hulu+, NetFlix, and can download movies through the Android Market?

Uh, my View has netflix right off the market. Yes, the new market. So all that's missing is Hulu+ which I imagine is any day since the Flyer has it. Not sure why you can't have the first two though since it IS there officially.

I posted this.
It appears to me that HTC may be exiting the tablet market. They have never delivered on the promised Android update from Gingerbread to Honeycomb for the Flyer / View and the Jetstream is not competitively priced. Additionally no announcements or marketing in place for the holiday sales pitch coming up would appear to leave HTC in a bad position.
HTC are you competing and supporting your customers or dumping us????

Maybe, but a good place to put your message don't you think? I am not looking for support, I want their sales team know that they are not selling hardware, tablet is a complete package. I also want future customers know the facts. Hurting sales is the only way to teach a lesson.
Yes I guess you are right. Just have a bad feeling about this. Reminds me of my HTC Hero.

THIS IS BULL **** MAN.....i can't even express how unfair this is. HTC originally said it would be included with HC and then MONTHHHSSS later they still don't offer it to us? They promised it to us, but something tells me they forgot about us and just said screw it.
I only buy HTC products, but this customer support is unfair. This product has been out for months now and still nothing, not even a reminder saying "were working on it". They keep giving us old OS, right when (IF) we ever finally do get HC, Icecream will already be out on tablets once again giving us an OLD OS.
Would someone please explain the point of this? ICS was announced last week and is obviously superior to HC. Why are you complaining about not getting HC now? I can understand if you're complaining because you don't expect any updates, but ICS is obviously the upgrade path Google wants everything with Gingerbread to go with. By the look of things, it appears that HTC was working on HC then stopped when they got word that ICS was coming very soon.

I'm sorry to be blunt , but you really need to read the threads here more and understand how the Android update process works. Google does not release or control updates for any device, none, zero, nada. Maybe in the future since they now own Motorola, they will control Motorola releases, but currently no, so ICS updates are not coming soon to a device near you. When Google announces any given version of Android it runs on exactly nothing at that point and a lot of work remains with each hardware vendor to make it work on each devices.

Here’s my first email to them
"Being the owner of several HTC Phones and enjoying their build quality, I recently purchased a HTC Flyer, thinking it would (as promised) get updated to Honeycomb.
Now, some web sites are reporting the flyer will not be updated.
I am now approaching my 30 day return window, so my question is, do I need to return my Flyer and buy something like the Samsung?
I really like HTC products but, I do want a device that (as promised) will get updated.
Gary"
I got the same reply as you. I then sent them this
"Thank you for your quick reply. As you know the official announcement was on Feb 11, 8 months ago saying the update to Honeycomb would be coming soon. The Flyer is approuching 1 year old and still no update. It seems like I may have to return my flyer and try another product. Thanks, Gary"

If it is false info they’re going to buy mine back … they just don’t know that yet
ICS is long way off. I don't expect HTC to release ICS update. Most likely the combination of cyanogenmod + some talented developer will give us ICS.
People fail to realize that Android and iOS are completely different animals.
iOS is made for very small set of hardware (for e.g. iOS supports iPHone 3G, 3GS, 4,4S, iPad and iPad2 hardware only) and hence it is a complete product. Hardware/Software/Apps and middleware (drivers etc) work together to deliver a consistent experience - Apple ensures that.
In Android world - google creates one version of OS with basic set of apps and middleware (drivers etc). It relies on companies to to create software and drivers compatible with the OS and developers to create apps compatible with OS - not an easy task with multiple vendors/hardware combinations.
In a sense Google has been shooting itself in foot with so many versions Froyo, GB, HC and ICS within last 2 years. I will not be surprised if companies stop supporting Google because they are tired of providing all this support. Supporting an OS update takes months of hard work. Add carrier specific releases to that and you begin to understand what a big mess all this is.
ICS is a first step by Google in right direction. Now we will have a single Android OS for phones & tablets with patch releases in future. This will bring stability to Android platform and to its vendors. In my opinion there should never have been HC and GB out at all. It should just have been HC that supported both phones and tablets.

This is what i got when i translated.. with googles help
Many of us regret installing Honeycomb on the HTC Flyer . Gingerbread for a return on it will send its tablet for service or simply flash the UCP method (not verified) that we can show you on request.
Honeycomb has taken a while but for Ice Cream Sandwich the story will be different since the update is scheduled for the first quarter, in a little over 2 months the very most!
Thank you to bandjamesband for the info!
We remind you that Google had not delivered the source code and therefore Honeycomb HTC 's had to do with using the SDK. So Sense is much less well integrated in Android 3.2. With the arrival of Android 4.0 on our shelves is expected obviously a major concern of this correction
Well yes according to that it looks likely.
The conversation with HTC which is mostly missing appears to have been about what options a user had to get off honeycomb.
The response from HTC was to send it to after sales service for a downgrade to gingerbread or to wait for the ICS update
The follow up question was, when is the ICS update planned for?
The response: Planned for the first quarter of this year.
I didn't translate the article, just the "chat with us conversation" from where the information about the update comes. And yes I am 100% certain of the accuracy of meaning in my translation.

Backwards compatibility is not all the way there for HC.
Yeah it looks fancier and all but I can make voip calls and all my bought apps that are bought for my Inspire 4G work 100% on GB Flyer.
Since I have AT&Trash the reception here leaves alot to be desired so I rely on my Flyer for phonecalls + I can call pretty much call or receive nationwide for free.

I am full of doubt, especially considering how long honeycombe took and the fact that the flyer is pretty much discontinued
I agree. Hate to be pessimist, but I think the road ends with Honeycomb and all its shortcomings.
Sent from my HTC Flyer; resisting Honeycomb due to allergy
My question is will Honeycomb actually be supported a little further down the road or will it just be forgotten. It seems like it was just a bridge to hold over tablet owners until the real OS hit, ICS. So what will developers do and will they continue to make everything Honeycomb compatible.
I almost feel like Google should request all Honeycomb tablets be upgraded to ICS and they should take the hit on any costs to do since they are responsible for putting together a half assed OS until ICS rolled out...
Microsoft did that with Win/ME and Vista
what i dont like with HC is the bar at the bottum... takes up to much screen.
this baby only got 7 inch, and by haveing a permanent bar there, makes the screen even smaller. dont like it..
the flyer/view got some HW-buttons, so the bar isent that useful...
but otherwise i prefere HC
Everyone needs to get a grip.
HC will go the way of Froyo and GB. They will be forgotten and the next big thing ICS and then Jelly Bean will replace them and on and on. Hardware will always be outdated in 6 to 9 months and new stuff will replace it. As for Google dictating that HW vendors and sellers update to the latest OS, they tried that in the annual meeting Oct. 2011 and got the big one fingered salute from all the manufacturer and cell carriers. Google is in no position to dictate things. They attempted to get everyone to agree to updating all devices to the new OS within 4 months and no one agreed. So it's all best effort meaning sellers can do it if they want to.
You have to remember that HW sellers don't make money from fixing all your problems and updating software. They make money from selling new hardware. So they will choose to do the bare minimum level of support. Now that may not be what you think is right or how it "should be", but that is reality and not accepting that will just make you more unhappy. Where you going to go? Apple? MIcrosoft? maybe.... Microsoft started out having a central update site for all Windows phone, but they have abandoned that concept due to cell carrier pressure. So now they are in the same boat as Google with users beholding to cell providers for their updates.
Google does not make a dime from direct Android sales. They are an advertising company.
Here is the English version of the article...
http://htcsource.com/2012/01/android-4-0-update-confirmed-for-the-htc-flyer/
Well, as the title says, HTC is preparing a new tablet and has leaked some info and benchmarks of the new device. When they announced the Flyer/EVO View and Jetstream were not going to receive official ICS update, one of the reasons HTC gave was that they were not going to develop new tablets and the cost of developing a new ICS Sense for Tablets was not worth it for just two devices...
So now... what?
I'd like to ask everybody here who has a Facebook account to go to the official HTC facebook page and demand the update to ICS for the Flyer/ EVO View and Jetstream tablets. It's not useless, HTC has rectified before when the customers filled their facebook pages demanding updates (Gingerbread update for Desire is a good example).
Some facts you can use to convince HTC to release the update (you can copy/paste in the HTC facebook pages):
- Flyer was released in May 2011, Desire HD in October 2010. Flyer is more powerful... but the DHD is getting the update. Not anymore!!! has HTC decision makers gone mad???
- Flyer has a more powerful CPU than One V, and twice the RAM... One V already has ICS, of course.
- Flyer has some unofficial ICS ROMs already, even a Sense 4 port, and those are the fastest ROMs ever in this device, but many things don't work because they are not official ROMs. The hardware is more than ready for ICS, it's begging for the update!!!
- HTC is going to release a new tablet, everyone who owns an HTC tablet will never buy another HTC after this "NO ICS" decision and we´ll be recommending everyone we know against doing so. And probably advise against their phones too.
- The hardware specs and quality of manufacturing of HTC tablets are outstanding. HTC tablets have been a commercial failure in the past because of several reasons, but the hardware is not one of them. Poor advertising, extremely high price,... but most of all, the lack of a proper OS is the major flaw of these devices.
- The Honeycomb update brought the loss of functionalities like phone calls or the hardware buttons... and a loss of 10% screen working area in landscape mode because of the Honeycomb bar (and we are talking of a 7" screen). We BOUGHT a device with those functionalities and there is no official downgrade.
- Most Flyer users were really disappointed with the Honeycomb update and were sincerely hoping an ICS update would fix those things, many kept Gingerbread instead of installing the update. The most read threads in the Flyer's forums on the Internet are the ones explaining how to downgrade to Gingerbread (unofficial method, of course). This is a worldwide situation.
- Honeycomb is dead. It was Google's temporary solution for tablets until ICS was ready and it shows... every major manufacturer is updating their tablets to ICS and getting rid of Honeycomb for good. No one wants Honeycomb, it was a failure, and that is known even at Google central offices (they won't admit it, of course). Our one year old devices should not be running an obsolete OS. With Gingerbread first and later with Honeycomb we still don't have a proper OS to enjoy the full potential of our devices, ICS is the solution and HTC is not updating.
- The ICS update is not just a fancy thing we are asking for, it's a necessity for our devices to function as they should.
- If HTC is developing a new ICS Sense for Tablets, it should not cost much to bring it to our devices. The cost of developing is out of the equation. HTC is letting down its actual tablet consumer base at the same time it is developing something that would make us all happy if it was released for our tablets. If we get an OS update (ICS or JB) for our devices then our next tablet would be an HTC almost for sure and we would be happy customers. Instead, we will not only run away from future HTC tablets but also the phones.
- The new HTC Quattro, Vertex or whatever name HTC gives to their new 10" tablet will be a commercial failure for sure if the owners of the only HTC tablets to date are left in the present situation. We are not happy, and the reason is the lack of a proper OS, it's a software problem. We will advise everyone against buying HTC tablets and we won't buy any more products from them. We could be telling everyone how wonderful HTC tablets really are if we had the proper OS, that's the best advertising any company wants, but we'll do right the opposite.
- Many of the HTC tablet customers chose their devices because they had HTC written all over them, knowing that meant QUALITY in capital letters. Early adopters of new devices are the ones that determine the success or failure of a company in a market niche. They're usually technology enthusiasts and they spread the word if a product is great or not. Apple knows very well what i'm talking about.
Tablets still are a fairly new product for the masses (specially Android ones), the early adopters of the HTC tablets are not satisfied, and a simple update can change the situation. Very little cost for HTC and huge benefits if they release the update.
- If HTC really wants to sell tablets and be one of the big brands they have to treat their customers properly, and give us the ICS update we need to enjoy the full potential of our devices (and also have back again the functionalities WE PAID FOR). Otherwise they will continue to see their benefits numbers drop (half this year).
I've already started to publish all this at the HTC main facebook page and at HTC Spain facebook page (where I live), and of course there is a Spanish version of this rant that is "more colorful" because that's my native language (En el anuncio de la filtración de las prestaciones del nuevo tablet les dije que si no nos dan la actualización se lo podian meter por donde amargan los pepinos, por ejemplo )
Of course all this might end up in nothing, but we have nothing to loose and much to gain just by spending a few minutes on facebook telling HTC that we are not happy, and that they might be in for a rough ride trying to sell their new tablet having their current tablet user base so pissed up.

Honestly man its a lost cause. Htc won't bend on it, they've made up their minds and the writing is on the wall. Good news is we have a good aokp build started by chaos so we will have a full working ics rom but not from htc
Also if they use the same pen technology, it might be our ticket to working pen on ics

our best hopes would be that something from this new tablet could be ported over
I wouldn't bet on the porting bit, the processor architectures are just too different. I guess maybe Chaos could get some kind of kernel ported, but I would personally be running AOKP even if we had a OEM solution. Hmm...you know I wonder if the AOKP MHL issue is because the standard Linux kernel doesn't support the second framebuffer...?
Just did my bit.
I doubt the hardware will be anywhere similar to the flyer but if it has pen, then we could get an ics pen driver

Same here. Posted on HTC's facebook page.
Figured why the hell not

Ah great my punctuation is all messed up. "buy" instead of by and "their" instead of "there" lol i look like an idiot now
And now I know why I don't post on Facebook. Because there is some trolling htc fanboy that is the first to comment every time I make a comment about the Flyer. This dude probably bought every condem named htc phone that ever lived, probably uses an htc Status as his main phone, probably has a closet full of white shirts with green htc logos, and spends every waking moment on their page defending them to the teeth if anyone dares make rip on them. His name is Droider.se

i wrote on their facebook page and here is the reply from them:

Our tablets are built and optimized for a Honeycomb experience. To preserve that match between hardware and software, we do not plan to update our tablets at this time. Upgrades are not the same thing as ongoing support. Devices not being upgraded to Android 4.0 will still get software improvements, security fixes, and technical support as needed.

Lmao that was straight out of their press released. "optimized for honeycomb"? Seriously? Optimized for what lag? If the flyer was optimized for anything, it was gingerbread not honeycomb.
I know it's all a lost cause anyway but still entertaining to hear their responses. Also ongoing support means releasing an update to address the lag and broken gps, and I see no indication they a going to do that.

I would like to post on their Facebook profiles, but I probably won't. I used to post on HTC Global, HTC UK, HTC Canada and HTC US. But I always got responses from dubious people who were on HTC's side, and to tell you the truth, I don't need more bad blood from dealing with (the lack of) official ICS of the Flyer.
It's a slap in the face if HTC is really developing another tablet. They've probably made some market research and must've found out that people really want another HTC tablet because their first go was such a commercial success. Plus, they must've found out that HTC tablet owners are so happy with their purchases, they're now like iPad owners: whenever a new generation comes, they jump right away.
Eitherway, I wish all the best to HTC. They said no ICS is coming for the Flyer. I can live with that as long as they keep their promise to update Honeycomb. Though, I doubt they'll have the time. JB is already here, and they're still busy updating to ICS.
I bought this tab 50 Days ago... Now I am already ranting about it. Should i exchange it for a Nexus 7?
Also, posted on their facebook

I'm pretty sure HTC never promised to update Honeycomb.

Where would you exchange it ? I'm thinking about swapping this tab somewhere too
Yeah there are htc fanboys that troll the site, and you ask about a Flyer ics update and the trolls attack you. Oh well. This isn't going to work, htc has made up their minds. We found this out in May. Let's just focus on ioidroid and Lisbon, scew htc! Ics probably wouldn't have been as nice as we thought anyway, most likely htc would of found a way to make it even slower than honeycomb!
I used to complain too but hell the nexus is only 200, so if I get tired I'll just grab that, we are fortunate to have the developers we have so that should be the focus, not beating a dead horse with nagging at htc

I would probably sell it to my dad because he really wanted one after seeing mine but couldn't find them anywhere... From that money i would buy a Nexus 7 when they come available here in The Netherlands.
Here's what I wrote and what i was answered... with Droider.se answers included too...
It's long, so relax, read it if you're bored. I'll post the three captures:
Part1
Part2
Part3
I forgot to tell them... If HTC Tablets are optimized for Honeycomb and that's why we're not getting ICS... then WHY THE HELL DO I HAVE HARDWARE BUTTONS IN MY DEVICE?????, so I just did:
Posted. More than likely will get the canned reply, but it's there.
