[Q] Camera Question?? - HTC EVO 3D

I bought the Evo 3D on launch day, but returned it shortly after because I needed some money due to a sudden emergency. I am now thinking about buying it again. One of the issues i had was the camera flash made little to no difference in low light pictures. I have read in a few threads that a recent update fixed an issue with shutter lag, but have found nothing in regards to the flash issue. I would just like to know if the pictures in low light situations have improved with recent OTA updates.
I know people will say "its just a cell phone, buy a camera." I understand that completely. Im just trying to weigh my options as to what my next phone will be.

The flash has always helped me, update or not. it lights up what you're taking a pic of. Its impossible for it NOT to help. So yes, the flash works. The only problem with the camera prior to update that bugged me was the green tint. That's been resolved now though. No issues with that.
There is a camera mod floating around if you root that turns off the picture compression and adds a few new features (panorama, scene modes and hdr - except I see no difference with the hdr). Pics look worlds better without the compression, mostly noticeable on a larger screen.

I just wondered, because with my EVO 4G, I never really had problems taking pictures. I had tons of problems taking pics in even moderately low light with the 3D. I changed every setting possible. I just have to check it out. Thanks for your input

Titan Camera: Picture quality very poor?

I switched over to the titan from my BB Curve that also had a 2mp camera, and the Curve took beautiful shots. But every photo i've taken with the titan looks terrible at best... unless i'm going for that modern-art-fuzzy-washed-out look... Are there any fixes/hacks/adjustments that are available to improve the camera quality? I have everything set on high, played around with the white balance, all the other settings. Any suggestions are appreciated!
I'm on DCD's 2.3.1 rom right now, but the photo quality has been poorly ever since i purchased the phone with the stock rom and all the roms in between.
I would recommend trying the touch camera. The flash doesnt work, but the pictures are a million times better.
the touch camera is included in DCD's kitchen
Does anyone have a separate link for the Touch Camera as a CAB file, I have trouble downloading large files at work, can't go for the kitchen.
Can I rephrase the question?
Does anyone know why the shutter speed on the titan (and the apache) are so freaking slow?
I've found that the only decent pics I can take are pics of totally stationary objects, so clearly, the shutter is just staying open for too long.
Any input? Any chance there's a registry setting we can change to speed up the shutter?
before the shutter speed comes into effect, the titan just doesn't seem to be able to focus properly, everything is always extremely blurry, especially when trying to take shots of objects close up. I've never had an HTC device before, are they all poorly built when it comes to the camera?

that depends on your opinion, and whether you carry your device as a pda, a phone, or a camera. ive seen some wizard and hermes pics that look great to me, but i know nothing about optics.
there are a few threads in other device's forums about removing the back cover of the phone to clean the lense and possibly remove a filter from it. if you have a dirty cover it looks like it makes a difference.
how are the pics on the vogue?

Like most cell-phone cameras the lens on the titan is fixed-focus [wikipedia] so the focus doesn't adjust. This has been standard for pretty much any cell-phone camera including those on HTC devices. However they put an auto-focus lens on the Kaiser. Some cameras on cell-phones are becoming more sophisticated, but that doesn't do much for us stuck with the crap-cam on the titan lol.

been lurkin, but here is a topic I have specific experience with...
I've just recently sold my Vogue on eBay after fenagling a $99 Mogul from Sprint. I can tell you first hand that the Vogue camera SUCKS. Every picture I took, even outside, looked like I was inside a shoebox when the picture was taken. Blurry, dreary, orange-tinted and out-of-focus pictures are the norm with the Vogue.
I can't make a comparison yet, because my Mogul won't be here until tomorrow, but I will be sure to do so once it arrives.
Not too bad for a first post, eh?
Guess I gotta go put together a sig/avatar now. Great.

I don't know if you can install the camera as a cab file - I haven't heard of anyone being able to just install the other camera drivers/files. You probably have to download the whole kitchen and choose the other camera when you cook the rom.
Yea, i wasn't just talking crap about the phone, i absolutely love the Titan, it just seems to me that with all the ways we've found to customize them and improve them, there HAS to be a way to improve the camera.. I mean 2MP is 2MP, there's only so much you can expect from the resolution, I understand its limited by the hardware in the end, but I'm getting circa '99 digital camera quality with my phone and i take a lot of photos for business AND personal reasons and carrying around an camera PLUS my phone seems like overkill. Anyone found that HTC Touch camera .cab?

No, not sure at all. I've never tried it myself. But I seem to remember dcd posting a while back (around the time that the Vogue camera first got ported) that you couldn't just drop the installation files into a ROM you were already using.
the option is in his new 2.3.2 and 1.7 roms already.
Ok, i downloaded the 2.3.2 kitchen at home installed the TOUCH cam, the improvement is... well, not enough to really call it improvement.
Any other suggestions?
this is something i know about as ive had some great cell cams until i came across the mogul.
What makes this camera so bad is a mixed between three things.
1. The shutter takes way to long
This could be un-fixable as it could just be lousy hardware.
2. The camera apps takes up to much cpu processing
The mogul is constantly trying to automatically fix the exposure/ brightness/ saturation and what not, and it never seems to stick to a setting. My best example is that when in very bright light, it doenst go through a ton of different settings.
You can test this by just cutting the camera on and going outside on a bright day, the FPS of the camera will be smooth. Then go back inside or somewhere pretty dim, the framerate will stutter as it does a bunch of constant auto settings changes.
3. The exposer just plan sucks
Theres really no excuse except this being a cell cam and cell cams generally suck.
I had a a900 and sanyo m1 before my mogul, and geez, they cost half as much and half twice the quality camera wise. The m1 practically takes studio quality shots when in the proper light (it also had auto focus ).
Ive searched the registry of the mogul hundreds of times looking for whatever is slowing the camera down, but to no avail.
I think the only thing that would give it any noticeable improvement would be something that kills problem #2, all those auto settings changes. That will speed up the shutter for sure because like i posted, when in bright light, it doesnt go through those transitions and takes higher quality and faster pics.
IMO, htc shouldve left it up to me rather i wanted brightness and saturation to fix them selfs, even if you take off the auto settings in the camera menu, they are still running.
Thats my two cents, i hope someone can further investigate
just so you guys know... i cabed it up for ya.

no, you were right. it can't be installed via cab alone.
what i did is use a cab to put the files on the device. then i move them with resco or totalcommander to the windows folder.
see cabs can't overwrite ROM files. neither can the stock PPC file explorer, but resco and total commander can.
instructions are in that thread.

[Q] CM6.2 Camera B&W Preview Screen

Currently Running Jt's Awesome CM6.2 Beta, (Quick thanks to Everyone Involved in bringing this to Us)
I Have a Personal Issue and wondering if anyone feels the same or could lend me a Helping Hand in getting it fixed.
My Question, Relates to the Black and White Preview. I gotta say that as much as i tried to like it, Im just not a fan of the Black and White.
I cant seem to get good looking pictures specially in dark or low light areas. where I cant see what Im shooting.
I tried Looking at the Settings and those were only for flash/contrast/Gps/zoom.
Switching the Camera Apk from the one in EC01 Rom, as well as an ASOP one but that did not thing, well it actually just removed the camera link from the launcher and App drawer
Once again this is a Personal Preference Issue/Question, that I Figured I'd Bring up, just in case anyone felt the Same way...
Its Not meant to Bang On Anyone Related to this Awesome project
Thanks in Advance.
I'm right there with you, and with all the hope everyone has in JT, I'm sure he'll fix that as well as the camcorder issue. What I never understood (Unless I overlooked it completely), was the camera didn't have a 5MP camera option, correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, I hope Jt will get them fixed soon enough as well.
In regards to the 5MP you are correct, i didn't see an option either, which means its already set to 5, or its lower, which would explain why sometimes the pictures come out extra grainy.
Now that EDO1 came out, hopefully there some good stuff in there so that we finally see a Full CM7. But only time will tell

[Q] [HELP FROM ALL DEVS.] Camera low-fps issue

Hello! This is a request to all the developers for Galaxy S II. You probably already know that some Galaxy S II suffer from the problem of low-fps (stuttering) with low-light conditions. That is resolved with the firmware of the camera of the Samsung I997 (Infuse 4G), but putting this firmware, the LED flash does not work anymore. You can change the firmware?
The firmware does help is the SIEG03. Camera firmwares topic here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098834&page=110
Thank you in advance if can help.

It would be great if some of devs look at this fw and changes what is problem so flash stop working
Indeed, i would be great +1
I sent a private message to Chainfire and email to Supercurio. I hope they meet!
Great thread! SC cameras are the ones that have low light framerate issue. If someone resolves the flash issue it will be great.
Is this the same thing as the low-light autofocus laggy thing?
I made a video at my friends birthday in a nightclub and it's crap! Had to delete it! Blurring and lagging every few seconds!
I know potatoman might do something about it but he's busy at uni now, I'm kinda surprised nobody has jumped on this issue. One of the big reasons I got the S2 was the camera...turns out it's not that good
Yes. Its that problem. And is laggy beacuse of some galaxy s2 camera modules have some bad firmware. The SIEGO3 fix the suttering in video but remove the led flash of the videos and we cant use it like assisted lamp for autofocus. If someone implement in the firmware, our problem is solved.
+1
It would be great! Thanks
Maybe someone who knows cyanogen can tell him to tell samsung to fix it. I mean he does work for them now

Maybe Samsung are aware of the framerate issue... they should be considering how many of us have this problem, but before they can release the firmware it proberly need to be tested ect so takes time.
Im using the infuse 4G firmware & more than happy to plod along with it, until a fix is released by either a Dev or Samsung.
I had a Galaxy S before i got the S2, so having no light in video isn't to much of a problem for me, the camera flash works which is more important, even without the pre focus light the camera still locks on 99% of the time in low light.
TBH that pre focus light of the orginal cam firmware was annoying as hell to some people, as it use to blind them before the flash kicked in lol.
Anyways im happy with having constant 30fps in either 720p or 1080p without any framerate problems.
The well-known dev's are unlikely to respond to PMs as they'd get hundreds\thousands a day, mostly from noobs, so unless they're from people they already know, I wouldn't expect a response. Plus a lot of them don't frequent XDA as it's turned into a noobfest where the "popular" devices are involved.
You could try posting over on the Cyanogen forums.
Steve (Cyanogen) is not likely to be in a position to "tell" Samsung to fix anything, and certainly not for a device that is as old as the SGS2 is now.
You could try logging a fault with Samsung themselves, they have been known to respond, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Just a heads up that while I'd love to help with this, I don't experience the issue myself, so I wouldn't even be able to test if my fix would work or not. I'm also not comfortable with my code being flashed- my firmware modding capabilities are limited at best... and flashing a bad camera firmware can be irreversible.
Sorry guys, good luck finding someone else who can help though.

This would be amazing on our phones! I too am more excited about this mod than any other. I use my camera a lot!
If it corrects for the pops and squeaks during video recording, then that would be icing on the cake. True 30fps recording would great too. I've had pretty severe frame-rate drops during recording.
I went ahead and installed the program and it appears to work. I get larger JPG images and 1080 video at higher bitrates. A few things though. The icons at the bottom are physically lower on the screen so the text on the bottom gets cut off. The button to the gallery doesn't work from video mode but appears ok from camera mode. The effects appear to work too. This is just my preliminary findings.
I'm on CleanRom 4.1 without any of the mods.
Edit: xsnapshot, I haven't noticed the pops and squeaks since the radio update in January. I didn't notice any on the test video I took, but it was only for 10 secs so I'm not sure. I'll take a longer video later and see if I can hear the pops and squeaks.
Edit2: Not sure why you linked to an Engadget post when the original post is in XDA. Here it is so you can get the app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533238
I installed this yesterday and haven't had any issues with it. I have not used my Rezound camera enough to really notice a difference. I guess I should have taken a before and after pick to see if the file size changed much.
I didn't flash it. Opened the zip up and pushed each item to my phone.
I did take a picture of some clouds yesterday evening. File size was 2.62MB
Installed this tonight, my photo file sizes are huge now, though I've not seen a huge difference in 1080p video quality. I'll do some outdoor testing tomorrow, to see if there is a difference.
I'll try to post some results if I get around to it

Out of curiosity... can this be undone
if you reflash a rom without it, yeah lol...
this doesn't do anything for video, btw guys..in joels rom it didn't, anyway. still recorded at around 8mbps, wouldn't ever hit above that to get even near 20...photo's seemed to work uncompressed though; they're bigger in size

Comprehensive list of LG G2 problems and solutions

The aim of this thread is to list all common problems (common = happens for many people) with the LG G2, in order to provide an easy place to find solutions for these problems, once we'll have such solutions. This will also be a good place to warn people interested in buying this phone (don't get me wrong it's a great phone, but some of these problems might be deal breakers to some).
My hope is that with time, all of these problems will be addressed by LG or XDA developers, in order to make them a non-issue.
List is updated to October 8th, 2013.
Problems:
1. Camera (stills): poor quality at low light.
2. Camera (video): poor quality due to shaky focus (the video is stable due to OIS, but the focus is shaky). Moving objects appear blurry. Also blurry image at low light. (link).
3. External speakerphone - very low decibel levels (link).
4. A2DP Bluetooth - problems maintaining stable connection with many devices. Also poor sound quality when connected to many devices (link)
5. Random reboots - when trying to get out of the lock screen (link).
6. Device fluidity - excellent at first days/weeks, but then deteriorates considerably to the point the device becomes laggy (S4 like). It's possible this has been exaggerated, but for now I'm keeping this as a possible common problem.
7. Screen oversensitive to touch - makes it hard to type correctly on the keyboard or browse the internet (link)
8. Overheating issue - especially when gaming with CPU intensive games (but also with GPS navigation), after several minutes the device throttles down the CPU to cool down (many threads about this problem).
9. Knock-ON feature doesn't work reliably - sometimes needs many taps to wake from sleep.
10. Choppy youtube playback - especially HD content (link)
Solutions:
1. None.
2. None.
3. Possible solutions: (A) mod to increase sound level output (link), (B) use Viper4Android (3rd party app that allows to increase sound levels).

Pardon me for a lot of text. Please skip if reading isn't your thing.
Great idea for a thread, but I think common is perhaps a bit misleading. The commonality of the random reboot and device 'fluidity' are extremely anecdotal. In addition, the term poor, in certain cases, are possibly inaccurate as well. For example, low light situations are going to be difficult for any phone camera and the results may be mediocre by point and shoot camera standards or a dedicated enthusiast level camera, but likely about average for a smart phone camera. So to consider them poor would entail having an actual comparison with other smart phones in the same conditions.
I'm completely behind this thread and think it might deserve to be stickied if it can live up to it's potential, but just wanted to help the thread along by trying to keep things reasonably accurate and realistic.
Is there a thread for point 6, "Device fluidity - excellent at first days/weeks, but then deteriorates considerably to the point the device becomes laggy (S4 like)."?
My experiences with the G2 AT&T are:
1. Camera puts too much faith in it's OIS to get a sharp picture and so the shutter speed is too slow, and focus wanders too long, so images are blurry. If you are taking a picture of a pet or young child and you get them to be still for a second and take the picture, the preview image of when you actually pressed the shutter will be sharp but the actual picture taken is a second later and not the shot you wanted.
2. Video suffers from what appears to be a similar scenario of wandering focus, too slow shutter speeds, too low ISO.
3. Viper4Android and similar apps resolve the sound issue to my satisfaction and then some. I don't use my phone's speakers for anything critical beyond speakerphone and I've not had any issue with it, but Viper4Android solves the low volume as far as I'm concerned so I would consider that a solution. Indeed it involves a third-party app, so it's not a resolved problem. (On a side note, avoid Beats Audio, Beats by Dre etc., there are better alternatives. It pains me no end to see charlatans and mountebanks making out like bandits.)
4. A2DP is reasonable sound quality for my car but I've not had the chance to compare to other phones. A2DP is notorious for some sort of sound issue, so not sure the G2 is considerably worse than others. From reading the thread it appears most are using their car's BT solutions which are dialed in for Apple products since they are the standard and mature. The wide variety of ROMS used in the phones that people are comparing to their recently released G2 make for a difficult comparison. Some said in the thread they had no problems, some said it was better than previous phones, some said worse.
5. Never had a problem with a reboot ever. Very stable for me; using Cleanrom 1.0 then 1.1.
6. Lag hasn't been getting worse at all. There is your typical lag of when, for example, you scroll down your app drawer quickly with a couple of strong flicks and it has to load up those new icons quickly, but that's not unreasonable and not what I think most people are complaining about. During the first week or so of having the phone, my Swype keyboard while using Next browser was slow to input key entries but it hasn't been a problem since and it's very hard to know what was the exact issue.
1. Not resolved yet
2. Not resolved yet
3. Solution
4. Not necessarily a common problem to this phone in particular, many phones have AD2P issues.
5. Not necessarily a common problem.
6. Not necessarily a common problem.
More data points please!
Touch screen problems
...
Problem #6 would be resolved with an update to android 4.3. That version has fs trim that frees up some inactive activities in RAM. It helped greatly with the gnex and nexus7 OG. It also has to do with the LG UI embedded in the phone.

OP we have a problem number 7 to add!
Would it be possible for people to mention the carrier they are using so we can possibly isolate the particular model that might be having problems?

I don't have that problem. AT&T.

No offense but half the crap listed here is subjective. My device has never under any circumstance rebooted or slowed down. In fact, yesterday it got up to 117°F and the device never slowed down or dimmed the screen. I've had the device for 2 almost 3 weeks and the performance is exactly how it was out of the box...
Edit: Just watched that video and that doesn't happen on my T-Mobile version.

+1 on listing carrier for each one. I am not advocating one carrier over another but I know Verizon tends to insist on lots of checking and device specs (bloat ware also) before they release a phone. So I am curious, especially about the touch screen issue. That said, Verizon also slows down android updates which sort of sucks.

solution for problem number 1 is use the flash lol. Like all mobiles it has limited range

I would like this thread to concentrate on common problems with the LG G2. Every problem I've written was mentioned by many people, not just one...

Thank you for this reply.
3. I've added Viper as a possible solution.
4. I've read that thread again, out of 13 testimonials, 62% report problems (disconnections, lack of bass, overall poor quality, important functions not working, etc.), while only 38% reported it to be as good as previous device (or better). So I think that for now, A2DP is a legitimate common problem with the LG G2. I will keep a close eye on that thread.
6. There is no single thread that deals with the lag issue, rather many anecdotal stories within different threads...

Just to add, on VZW. No lag since release date. Never had a reboot. Stream BT audio through my car and its always clear and never dropped. Just like someone that goes to a great restaurant and thinks they had a bad meal...they tell everyone the restaurant isnt good, even though the majority of people were satisfied but never told everyone about it. Just dont like people reading these prior to buying and saying, ugh, this phone has all these problems!

If those people are smart, they will read the equivalent thread of competitor devices too.

Thank you for starting this thread and for your reassessments and improvements to the thread.
As a few have mentioned, those that have an issue skew the results within a thread. If a thread is started by someone with an issue, for example the drifting screen contact points, and there are no replies from anyone saying they don't have a problem then it's too early to make an assumption as to how big a problem it is for the whole community. How do we even know for sure the person with the screwy screen didn't drop the phone?
Anyway, you rightly didn't want to add that problem to the list of more common issues and I agree.
Any idea what the causes for the lag are turning out to be? I recall something about Verizons OTA update being coincidental or perhaps a Google update was it? I don't recall.
Keep up the good work.

I've seen "memory management" as one suggestion, but too early to tell for sure.
There are several issues with the camera. However the fact that panorama is lower resolution and quality (file size) than normal pictures seems like a bug. Also if you edit a photo the quality is reduced.

Verizon - Stock Rooted.
The only issue I have that is on your list is the camera stuff. I turn off IA and that helps it take pictures faster. Making sure to touch the screen where I want it to focus helps sometimes. Last weekend, I was at an anniversary party at a restaurant at noon. I had the flash on auto and went off most of the time, and still only 1 in 3 pics were worth keeping. Most pictures were slightly out of focus or grainy even on posed shots.
Am I the only one with slow/weak GPS lock? My G2 is almost as bad as my GNex was. If it's cloudy or I'm in my house sometimes it won't lock at all. Last night I stood in my livingroom next to a window and it took over a minute to finally lock on to 5 of 11. I put the S4 right next to it and it locked in under 10 seconds on 17 of 22. I use the GPS Status app to watch it lock. I have installed Faster Fix but that didn't help it any. Since I haven't seen anyone else mention GPS, I might just have a bad unit.
