[Q] Benefits of Updating with the OTA? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am extremely happy using BAMF remix 1.8 (froyo), besides a minor issue or two, with the Wireless Tether APK now on my card, I am good.
Just wondering what other people find the benefits are to going with the OTA update vs some other GB update/rom already out?

There really aren't any benefits of going with OTA, other than preserving your warranty. Warranties don't worry me since I insure the thing. The benefits of going from Froyo to GB are definitely pronounced though. Better features that are better implemented. A few more features as well. And the current radios and GB builds are easily the most stable and power efficient to date.

I have no idea why anyone who rooted and still has root would think any OTA is better than what they currently have

Honestly, that's why I posed the question. I used to be a flashaholic with my DX but my TB not so much. I guess frustrations from imperfect GB ROMs had me go back to Froyo so I haven't been following the recent threads.

You can also, or should be able to soon, update to a newer BAMF version that incorporates this just-released OTA. I use SkyRaider and, according to it's dev, it will be updated pretty soon. I presume it's to bring it up-to-date with the base files. I know he's incorporating the VM fix that was created yesterday.

BAMF isn't going to rebase their ROMs on the latest OTA because it's not worth it. If you want to be that up to date, the provide a patch to update the 8 files.

Ok, then what are the benefits of updating to the latest rooted/deodexed ota from the rooted/deodexed mr2 other than just to have gingerbread?

For one, your boss won't get that kinky SMS message originally intended for your wife/girlfriend, where you tell her how nice her ass is.

2.3.4 Thunderbolt leak question?

With this new 2.3.4 Leak out for our Thunderbolts. I was wondering from past leaks from HTC about how long till we actually see an OTA? If said particular leak makes it through all testing. Month? 2? 3? anyones guess ?
I'm unrooted with the new OTA that rendered my TBolt with random rebooting and battery life decreased significantly. I don't think I want to root just yet or a least until the phone isn't updated anymore by HTC.
Any Thoughts?
I dont know, most of my experiences with leaks stem from the fascinate. Thats a different story though. Htc said by the end of June, so id expect it by at least mid July. If I put money on it i'd say mid June though.
running the leak now...it's a beta for sure but i'm gonna keep as my daily driver so they aren't too far...however it between HTC and Verizon it's gonna be a while still. I'd go ahead and root cuz the android community is way ahead of the OTA's...i've been running the leaked version of the OTA for over a month...now i'm on the new gingerbread leak.
besides once you root, you can pick and choose what you want...if gingerbread has too many bugs, i'll just flash back to one of the custom rom's and kernels...either way you're far above anyone who is unrooted...good luck!

[Q] Don't have patches after update to WebOS 3.0.4?

Hi, i updated my TP to WebOS 3.0.4 just now, and i notice that, after i install preware and the testing feed, i don't see the patches in preware. Anyone has this issue too?
Yes. Patches showed as installed but had no effect on the system. Once uninstalled, they still don't show up in preware.
thanks for the fast reply...
probably have to wait for the new preware update?
New version of os means the patches made for old version do nothing. You can leave them on touchpad and when developer for patch upgrades it will show as upgrade in prepare......
Yea I had noticed the same thing. I am going to downgrade though, not enough improvements for me to stick on this.

Given that a stock 3.0.4 runs at pretty much the same speed as a fully patched & overclocked 3.0.2, I would've thought that waiting a couple of days for the patches to be made compatible with 3.0.4 wouldn't be that big a deal.

im thinking of downgrading to 3.0.3 too.
my previous 3.0.3 with all the patches are much snappier than 3.0.4
but, i think im gonna to wait for awhile untill the new patches for 3.0.4 come out.

Can I? Should I?

My question is... is it safe to update to the newest ICS leak from the one we got before it? I probally won't even update again since the ota is due in a couple of days but I see alot of users talking about the newest ICS leak not having as many issues. So if its without a doubt safe I figure I will but if its iffy I can just wait. Thanks for your help everyone

2.3.4 or 2.3.5 ?

So I keep reading about people getting 2.3.5 update for their Photons. When did it happen? Because I'm using my Photon here on local GSM network (outside of the US), don't have a Sprint account and right now my phone have 2.3.4 installed and it's fully updated (according to System Updates --> Update Motorola Software)
I remember getting one update since I bought it and that's it.
Where this 2.3.5 came from, Sprint or Moto themself?
Please enlighten me. Thanks.
I'm wondering too. I have Sprint, with a rooted Photon, on stock ROM. When am I going to get an update? I've checked manually and nothing.
This update is a part of the soak test, to the limited number of users.
It will be the same with the ICS update ?

It's allways the same with software updates. But who knows
Thank you
soak test is basically letting a number of users test the upgrade before letting it to public...

Probably not gonna happen until Oct and final release sometime in Nov. This is just purely my guess.
You're not missing anything major with 2.3.5, so don't worry. Better camera resolution, I think. I have 2.3.5, and also the update to it as of a few days ago. I honestly see no changes from 2.3.4.
Not sure why they are even spending effort on a minor GB update with ICS (Q4)and (hopefully) JB coming.

Software 4.03.605.2

I've heard this came out a couple months ago, but my phone as yet to update on its own. When I try and check for an update, it says there are no updates to be found. And when I check my phone, my current software is 3.14.605.12. Anybody know how I can upgrade to the latest? Ever since I upgraded to ICS, my phone has been nothing but trouble for me, and I'm hoping if I upgrade to the latest that some of these problems might go away. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Here is the link to the global update: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ull-ruu-build-4-03-605-2-for-the-htc-rezound/ Lucky for you, since you haven't unlocked you bootloader or done anything otherwise, you can flash this in your bootloader and get the update with no problem.
Two notes on flashing that...first it's unofficial, so flashing it might risk your ability to get OTA's in the future. Second, it will wipe your data, apps, and internal storage. However, with those two caveats, it will work just fine.
I appreciate the input guys. However, both of you state I need to "flash" to do this - which looks to me (as stated above) it's an unofficial method of getting this update. I'm curious, is there a way I can do this a legit way? How come my phone did not take the update, while others did? How can I force my phone to update? I'd like to keep my phone as stock as possible and not do any modding to it.
If I really have no other options, then I guess flashing is my best bet. And considering the last phone I had that I took any time to mod was the first-gen iPhone, I have no clue what any of this lingo means - but I guess that's what Google is for. However if any of you have a quick link in mind you could post that might help me or at least point me in the right direction, it'd be appreciated. I looked at the link posted above to the actual ROM file and it has some simple install instructions, however I'm not sure if that's all I need to do considering I'm still fully stock. Thanks again guys for all your help.

your phone is up to date! like they said above and the global is unofficial, therefore putting the global ruu on your phone would be the latest!

Run the 4.03.605.2 RUU. Let it boot 1 time, then wipe and install shrike's CounterShrike CM9 ROM. It's seriously a great ROM and super smooth in comparison to stock. Basically, what this phone should have been from day 1.

My apologies, but I don't quite understand. You're saying my phone is up to date with the 3.14.x.x software, and the 4.03.x.x that I'm looking for is actually some "custom" ROM and unofficial?

think of it like getting a Blu-Ray Movie Early. They say when the Blu-ray should be released but some guys who know people can get an Early Copy but modify it to make it Better than its original Release. And this is all totally legal.

So this 4.03.x.x is just not out yet? I've been seeing news articles of them reporting on it as far back as August. Has it just not rolled out to every phone yet? If not, then I will continue to wait. I just thought my phone was messed up and wouldn't take the update.

But waiting on Verizon to Roll out the Update will take a loooonng time. but Sites have the Latest (Unofficial)Build. Unofficial is kind of like Alpha, and Beta. Unofficial is inbetween Alpha n Beta.
It basically gives u global function so if your not going to other countries don't even worry about it. I promise if u take the time to figure everything out and flash it you won't be able to tell a difference. Just skip it

A few people got 4.03.605.1 a week or two after the 3.14.605.12 OTA, but they never mass rolled it out. I know of one person on XDA who got it as an OTA. 4.03.605.2 surfaced a few days later on Android Police, but I haven't heard of anyone getting it as an OTA, and there hasn't been a peep out of Verizon on it.

Awesome, just what I needed to know. I will just be patient then. Thanks!
Yep, basically the only reason why the global update ever made it to light is because the manufacturers like HTC like to "splash test" on a few customers, let them report back bugs and what not, at this point if there aren't any bugs or the bugs that are present are workable, they will release the update in mass to the rest of the public.
Basically, a splash tester knew what they were doing, whipped together that nice little "flashable" ruu package and released it for the rest of us to hack up for our own uses. Usually, we look forward to these little splash test releases because they do contain newer bug fixes, but they also contain new kernels, libs and other useful things we need to continue making roms like aosp or sense 4 work better
I'd say if you want it, go ahead and flash it. Its just not official as they say because it did not arrive onto your phone via ota update directly from htc and verizon. Although it is an official build built by htc.
