Hey guys, I posted this in the regular Q&A folder but got no replies.. hopefully someone here can help!
I've recently acquired a shiny new S II and am looking to root it.
Thing is, I'm slightly scared of bricking my phone because of the kernel not closely matching ones I can find.. so I just wanted to post my plan of attack here, to make sure it made sense to you knowledgeable gentlemen
1) Install Kies from Samsungs's website and install it on my PC - done!
2) Grabbthe OZS_KG2 zip from this post (my kernel ends BUKG2) - done!
3) Download Odin v1.83 - done!
4) Use the instructions in this post. (I've already downloaded s2root)
5) After rooting, update the kernel one more time (using odin) to a proper one from here - probably the XXKG3 one to be safe - to get rid of the yellow triangle thing.
Does this sound ok? I've not missed anything obvious out, have I?
I've backed up contacts/APN etc to be safe, but am I correct in assuming that rooting shouldn't wipe any data?
You can't brick your phone this way. Just go ahead and try what works best.
Ah ok, that's reassuring. Will have to just take the plunge and see what happens!
My first stop after rooting will be clockwork recovery, the cyanogen mod.. fingers crossed!
Well to answer my own thread (and to help others in future!) this is how I did it...
1. Download a close enough kernel from Chainfire's epic good thread.
2. Install Kies
3. Set phone to use USB debugging (Settings > Apps > Development)
4. Download and run Odin
5. Reboot phone into download mode (while holding vol down + home button, press power)
6. Check in Odin for yellow connection at top left
7. In Odin, click PDA, select the .tar file downloaded in step 1
8. Click Start
And done!
I'm not bothered about removing the warning triangle (not really that bothered) but my phone is now perm-rooted and has superuser/etc
I've just made a backup using CWMR (hold vol up + home when powering on to access the CWMR menu) and am ready to go experimenting!

After flashing Macnut R12 and Eugene's a13 kernel, my Vibrant will only boot to the "Galaxy S I9000" screen, but nothing further. The screen doesn't go black and no buttons flash, the phone just doesn't boot past that screen. I can enter recovery and download mode, and can use clockwork mod recovery, but I'm not sure what my next steps should be. Should I attempt to use Odin (Bricked my first Vibrant with that, though that one was HW-Locked), or is there some other way to fix this?
Scratch that, now my Vibrant boot-loops (Boots to galaxy S I9000 screen then restarts), and I can't enter recovery. Starting to freak out a bit, hoping download mode works... Any help would be appreciated.

Here is a couple of methods to get into download mode. Once you get to download mode, follow the directions later in my post...
First Method
1) Pull the battery, sim card, and sd card.
2) Reinsert battery but do not press any buttons.
3) Plug into usb that is connected to your computer. If something shows up on the screen (charging logo) then you should be golden.
4) Hold the vol up, vol down, and power until the screen comes on, immediately release the power button but not the other two. You should be in dl mode.
Second Method
1) Another method that seems to work for some people is to pull the battery, sim, sd card.
2) Reinsert battery and hold both volume buttons but do not press power button.
3) Then plug in usb. The phone should boot into download.
Third Method
1) You will need the samsung ADB drivers installed for your phone and ADB.
Samsung Drivers for 32 bit Windows: http://files.androidspin.com/downlo...=SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe
Samsung Drivers for 64 bit Windows: http://files.androidspin.com/downlo...ung/vibrant/&file=usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip
2) Remove sim card and sd-card. Remove the battery.
3) Hold buttons vol up, vol down, and power.
4) While holding down those 3 buttons put the battery back in and keep holding all 3 buttons until the vibrant disappears and reappears. Once it reappears, release all 3 buttons.
5) Now connect your phone to your pc via USB cable.
6) Open a cmd prompt and navigate to the folder with ADB and type "ADB REBOOT DOWNLOAD" caps are not necessary.
7) Your phone will reboot into the download mode.
Once in download mode
Download the files in the linked thread and follow the directions there or the ones below.
Odin and Files Needed Available Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
1) Open Odin and verify that one of the Com ports shows a device connected. If it doesn't try using a different usb port.
2) Load the .pit and pda files. It should be pretty obvious how to do that once you are in Odin.
3) Make sure that the option to partition is unchecked. The other two options should be checked.
4) Hit start and wait.
5) Your phone will restart when Odin is done and you will be good to go.
Also, you might have to build the usb jig. It is guaranteed to get you into download mode. Here is a link to that thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
Also, if you would like I can use remote log in to your computer and do it for you. Send me a pm or email: [email protected]
Ok, Download mode (Via Volume + and - and plugging in usb) works flawlessly, but I'm still unsure of how to go about using Odin to fix this problem. Should I go the "Froyo that doesn't brick" downgrading route, or should I just flash JFD? And to the above poster, I won't have access to the internet for a couple hours after this post, so I can't email you right away. If I can't fix the problem later today, I will certainly contact you for some assistance.
Thanks for the guide, I'm just worried about what to flash. I've seen people praise Eugene's downgrading method for fixing most any problem (Froyo that doesn't brick to JFD), but I'm very much an Odin novice, and I'd hate to let it tear the life out of yet another phone (Though thankfully this one isn't HW-Locked). Also, does flashing JFD through Odin touch the SBL or anything that could affect my phone's ability to access recovery/download mode through hardware methods? I've heard that the JI6 OTA update fixes the 3-Button mode, but I'm unsure of whether or not JFD breaks that (Though I assume it doesn't). Anyway, thanks for the help, sorry if I don't post back soon, have to leave the house for a few hours, and I'm stuck with my old phone until I can fix my Vibrant.
One last question, should I use the Odin in the link, or an updated version (If one exists, I believe Odin3 1.70 is the latest and I don't know used in that thread)? Last time I used Odin it froze and killed my HW-Locked Vibrant.

Thank you for pointing out that the linked thread has the old Odin. I attached the new Odin 1.7 in this post. The other files (pit and pda) in that thread will work fine. Once you get booted into that ROM (Stock JFD) just re-root, install CWM recovery and reflash with a ROM of your choice.
Just wanted to say that Odin ran successfully for me, and I now have my Vibrant back in working order. Thanks for the help (and that nifty little guide).

You are welcome. Glad you got it working again...
hey guys, sorry for the noob question. how can i update to 2.2 while staying with the stock look and not having to use any other rom?
Here are many links you can use to download it (use your favorite)
http://www.multiupload.com/2SWILHEP3Z
this is JL5 (version 5 of 2.2 [not official])
You need to download ODIN, you can download it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8863820&postcount=138
You need to have Samsung drives on your computer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Once you install the drives, you can start ODIN and choose PDA and browse for the .zip file you downloaded.
Make sure repartition is NOT selected.
Put your phone in download mode (press both volume up and down) and then stick the usb cord without letting go of the volume buttons. A yellow android should appear and ODIN will show your device in yellow.
If this happens you are good to go, just click start and let it finish.
If you are on stock ROM then your data won't be erased.
I hope I made this clear and don't forget the Thanks button :]
Yes, got it! thanks!!
PROPS!
Thanks for the easy to follow write up!
hey guys i'm having serious trouble with this miui 2.3.7. I flashed the rom, and everything was (kind of, the rom was buggy, but working) so i wanted to flash another one after a couple weeks so when i did, it gave me an error while flashing, then i tried to reboot, and i was on a boot loop with the vibrant and platypus screen. I tried reflashing the miui rom now (at the advice of someone else) and now My phone is just stuck on the vibrant screen and i can't even get into recovery. Please help if anyone can.

Try holding only the bottom button and power to get into recovery.
You might have to odin to stock. This is an one click too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509
To get into download mode unplug your phone, take out your battery. Put the cable into your computer, hold the vol - and +, plug into your phone then insert the battery. (Put battery case on too so it does not fall out.)
It will revert you back to factory. Root it using it as well (using the tool), and then download miui from rom manager.
Let me know if you need anymore help.
I made this MIUI install guide for my GF at the time it's broken down in the simplest terms humanly possible so if the guide sounds like it's mocking you, well it's not it's just designed for people who have no idea what there doing, aka My ex lol follow it to A T starting with Odining to stock. Links to all files needed are embedded in the document itself.

Note about odin it's reasonably self explanitory
open the program check ONLY these boxes
Repartition
Auto-Reboot
Reset Time
Select the "pit" button choose
512.pit
select the "PDA" button Choose
T959UVJFD.tar
turn phone off
press and hold Vol+ and Vol- now plug in usb that should enter you into Download mode and odin should find the device press start and wait for the phone to finish the process
now follow the guide on installing MIUI.

Odin out of it as said above, you need to get your partitions right. If you come back flash straight from a 2.2 rom like (bionix)
yeah i would love to do that but unfortunately when i go open oden and go into download mode the computer can't recognize my phone due to the drivers being changed to the nexus 1 drivers (that's what i've gathered from doing research). And I can't find anywhere to download the nexus 1 drivers....

ok as of now, all i can do is get into download mode or get to the samsung screen, can't get into cwm. when i get into download mode, the computer won't recognize the phone due to the driver issue, i tried installing the drivers that the above poster suggested and they won't install when i go to device manager. any thoughts?
Install Samsung Kies (To get Drivers). Then, try my guide (link in signature).

ok downloading now....will keep you posted on progress
ok great news, the samsung kies worked and now i'm back to stock, but now i can't get into recovery....I'm assuming i'm still rooted? am i?
Now that you are back on stock you are no longer rooted. Now follow my guide on flashing MIUI. It has everything you need from flashing instructions to all compatible custom kernels for MIUI.

yeah sorry, i had a bone head moment. i re rooted the phone and now i'm good. thanks to everyone for all their help!!
I really need somebody's Help, I followed these instructions on how to root a Galaxy SII:
Maxwell Shifman
The Flashing Process
Make sure your phone is disconnected from the computer and switched off before starting.
Download Odin3 v1.85 (first post) and the KF4 kernel (CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KF4-v4.0-CWM4.zip – fourth post) from Chainfire’s SGS2 CF-Root thread at Xda-Developers. You will need to register on the forum to download the files – highly worthwhile anyway.
Extract the two ZIP files into a new folder. You should have the following files in the folder:
image
Open Odin3. Click on the PDA button and select the CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KF4-v4.0-CWM4.tar file. Make sure that “Re-Partition” is not selected. Your screen should look similar to this:
image
Now the only *remotely* confusing part – placing your phone into download mode. With your phone already switched off, simultaneously hold down the Home (middle) button and the Volume-Down (on the left hand side) button, then hold the Power button (on the right hand side). If you hold this button combination correctly you will see the following screen (if it didn’t work, you’ll need to switch your phone off and try again):
image
Press Volume-Up and you should see this:
image
Now we are ready to flash the kernel. Plug the phone into your MicroUSB cable. If you are doing it for the first time, some drivers may automatically install to allow communication with the phone in download mode. Once this is complete, check your Odin3 screen for the following changes:
image2
If you are still with me at this stage, you are good to go. Press Start in Odin3 and let it do its magic (the phone’s screen will change to a progress bar so you know it is doing something).
The phone will reboot and you are done.

Can you go into download mode? If yes, try flash stock firmware. If no, I guess you'll need to buy a USB Jig then you can flash stock firmware.

Yes I still can. What do I do sir? What is a USB Jig? I am really new at this.
Great! Now go find stock rom for your device. And flash it using Odin. About USB Jig, it's a tool to help you enter download mode when your device is bricked. But don't mind about that, just focus on finding stock ROM for your device and flash it using Odin.
Note: THIS IS ONLY FOR GALAXY STAR USERS DUE TO THE STOCK ROM USED. ALL DATA WOULD BE CLEAR TOO SO MAKE A BACKUP!
You would probably see this post as your phone is bricked, bootloop or any other software issues that you want to revert your phone back to factory version. To simplify this post, I would post it in sequence.
Tools needed: Odin in computer (I use version 3.09), Stock rom (I would provide the website below), USB cable and patience.
1. Boot into Odin in your Galaxy Star phone. (Volume down + Home + Power)
2. Press Volume up and you should see the green android there ans it say Downloading.
3. Add selected stock rom (or if you want a change, a custom rom, but it is not recommended since your phone is already brick/bootloop)
into PDA or AP section of Odin in your computer. (Odin may not respond but wait and be patient)
4.Make sure the phone label is blue.
4.1)If the phone label is yellow in colour, restart the computer and/or phone and/or reverse the order of step 1 and step 2(From what I had experienced)
5)Start the operation when ready
6)Wait for the operation to end (Patience needed):fingers-crossed:
It should boot and you can say hello to your new phone.
However if your phone still bootlooped/bricked,
1)Go to stock recovery(Volume up + Home + Power)
2)Wipe data
2.1)If you want to be safe, wipe cache.
It should boot normally by now.
This should help your Galaxy Star. If this help you please press the Thanks button and reply if you face any problem.

Another way to avoid bricked.. you can flash another rom using CWM..
so you need one working rom in your ExtSdcard.. Just in case you get bootlop. You can flash it. :fingers-crossed:

Yes, although I review that, I believe it is still safer to flash stock rom. Thanks for your advice!
Try this When u get bootloop
Flash it using cwm based recovery
And doesnt need to wipe data
So ur data save
and
Doesnt need pc also

Best of all methods (Requires Attention and basic understanding)
Understand the cause of bootloop. And revert the cause.
Eg- Bad framework
- Error in a system file
etc etc.
If u have a backup of those files u can use aroma file manager to put those files back.
Or flash a working framework(or whatever caused the bootloop)
This way it takes only 2 minutes(including rebooting), no pc needed, basic 1 second flashing all thru cwm ,no kind of data loss
,no settings changed and all apps intact.
Also if u dont have files on ext sd card put that ext sd card on a pc or something and put those files.
It saves a lot of time and no risks of data loss at all
bricked
