Hello everyone! I recently began contemplating rooting and doing custom installs for my 959, for something fresh and better performing, also seems my music player has been acting up recently and am really interested in something new along with voodoo sound... If necessary anymore ? Thing is, there are so many ways to root, and there are so many custom roms??? I don't know where to start or what to look for? I just want one of the better, stable, new custom roms available as of this date for the t-959. I search but seems there's no definitive answer? Just a lot of roms haha?
Also when downloading a rom, do I have to download like 30-40-50 kernels and add them? I see all these roms, kernels and update??? Is it just download a rom and that's it, am I making more of it than it should be?
I'm just really noob'ish, really confused, and really, really nervous! I can't afford to brick this phone, but I really want something new.

I fell in love with rom flashing as it greatly improves performance and gives phone a new look. Especially since Vibrant isn't supported anymore.. I can't live without voodoo goodies=) Definitely improves sound.
Negative side of custom roms is it takes up some of your time.. Finding a rom you like, tweaking it.. Not too mention you might brick you phone.
If you decide so.. the most important thing is always read OP...
I used superoneclick to root. I recommend Bionix 1.3.1 as a first rom very stable though a bit outdated. After playing around with the rom, you can try different 2.2 kernels and modems. Then go on to gingerbread roms.=)
Extremely easy. I'd suggest reading some of my guides in my signature.
I would Odin
Then download a ROM (nothing else needed)
Download my option b update.zip
Move both to internal sd
Reboot into recovery
Click reinstall packages
Choose to install zip from sd, select ROM, reboot.
Sent using the XDA app.

Any roms you would recommend s15? I appreciate the starting rom you gave me Trail, I'm looking for something a little more up to date I suppose? I was looking at cm7 or Simply Honey 5.0 Revolution(JVR GB 2.3.4)? Something with voodoo already in it? Something pretty stable with a bit of features. Maybe a lil less lag than stock 2.2, better performance, audio and battery life as well?

Simply Honey is a good one, stable, lots of features, great developer support.
I'm currently on RevolutionRom 2.3.4, stable and smooth for me, only bad is itfreezes like once or twice a day. More of a sgs2 look which i like. Good battery.
FYI Flashing Gingerbread roms, you will need to flash gingerbread bootloaders to remove rainbows and see recovery ( theres a post on it)
Also GPS isn't stable on gingerbread.

I think I'm gonna try the simply honey one or wait till he does a final release?, as for the bootloaders, what do I do or go to there? Also for the kernels, do I need to download one for simply honey? Should I download one for it?
I seen some roms or kernel can improve wifi and signal? Is that true, if so point me in that direction hahaha...

Thanks man, do you mind if I ask which one you would recommend (Odin or Clockwork?)... I stumbled upon this youtube how to called "Custom ROM installation tutorial for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant)", and was just wondering if I can apply all his methods to SH 5.0? Sorry tried to link it but cannot due to my post count... Oh and when I'm done, how should I proceed with the new talon kernel?
Also if there's a new release of honey or the final release, say I installed this one... Do I have to do it all over again? Same wit kernels? Finally, do I need to revert my unrooted stock 2.2 froyo back to a previous version before gingerbread or any of this?

D bootloader is only flashable by odin..you can read the OP for simply honey, what you need is all in there in d development area..flash kernel that works 4ur phone u decide on that wether bullet or talon..you can use sgs kernel flasher to switch bet the two..

One last question before I do this, I seen SH 5.1, but I seen it was for the i9000? Which one should be used? or the one you may recommend? Im looking for voodoo sound controls.

i reverted back to stock firmware via odin and one click rooted my phone, factory wiped all data and now I remember after I rooted my phone I had unzipped file in my sd card and it told me that i can just delete it after I was done, well i did and then watched a video on clockwork that said not to delete it?
EDIT: Nevermind I fixed it, I just unrooted and rooted again...
So sorry for being a pain, I know you guys have better things to do.

I am using KG2 (Villian Rom). It's a Bell SGS2.
Now, I'm wondering if I can change to KI8 or something else later, or will this phone only work on KG2?
Battery right now, is 8hrs with fairly heavy use. I was expecting 10-12, and I have a feeling its the kernel + ROM. I'm thinking of going back to a rooted stock, but I need to know if I need to use KG2?
Can I change the modem/baseband/etc? I don't quite understand how the versions work.
If I can change it, what SHOULD I be running?
Edit: Take a look at the graph... Maybe with this kind of usage, almost 8hr is all I can really expect. If that's true, then maybe we can just answer the question based solely on the kernel issue. I'd still like to know, to be fair.

1. yes you can flash to KI8 if you like.
2. No, you do not need to use kG2 you can upgrade to any rom you like. Each has pros and cons that you needs to try out for yourself.
3 yes you can change the modem=baseband, firmware or kernal to any combination you like.. versions are based on the original firmware version released.
4. best for battery life so far are the latest releases Like KJ 2 or 3.
if you lower the brightness levels, you can extend the battery a little further.

One of the first recommendations is to flash the latest official ROM.
As I want to stay as "stock" as possible, I am running a new stock ROM (XWKJ3) and a custom kernel, which is optimized for a better battery life => SpeedMod K2-18-test8.
Here is the corresponding thread of hardcore, the developer of this kernel => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498&highlight=Speedmod
So, I recommend to flash the latest official ROM (you can get those as non-wipe versions in Intratech's Official Firmware thread here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278).
Then test is as "untouched" stock ROM for performance and battery life.
If you are still not satisfied with it, then flash a custom kernel optimized for ... what you mostly want.

Thanks a lot. To flash the kernel, should I use ODIN or can it be done handset side? Which should I do first, kernel or ROM? Or will some of the ROMs have the kernels in? The thread has a lot of extraneous information and I can't seem to understand EXACTLY what I need to do. I've only ever done ROMS through recovery.
If I install a new kernel, it'll most likely work with the current rom (so for example, flashing a new KJ kernel, and a decent modem (is there one?) ) right? Or do I have it backwards?
I don't mind if I wipe or not, everything is in the cloud... One thing I DO notice however, is that ROMs outside of MIUI don't re-install market apps automatically. But that's something I don't mind doing, anyway.

As per above, if I flash a whole stock ROM, will it replace the kernel as well?

I just recently got my Atrix 4G, I'm new to Android. I've done a lot of research relative to custom roms, rooting, kernals. I know how to root, Im sketchy about roms and kernals. I just wanna make my phone ATT stock free. It makes it slow, and I know this device can do so much more. But I just wanna know what I should do. I don't know whether to do these roms:

I do not want to hard brick my new phone.
I would like to know what ROM is the best, I like the gingerblur stability but i like the ICS theme. But Cyanogen is well known for great ROM. Just a mess. What kernal would I use for these specific roms? What do you prefer?

So prior to installing the software, what does that necessarily do? Relative to ROMS and Kernal files. I know I need ROM manager and Titanium backup apps with root for backup reasons and stuff.
First of all you will have to unlock the bootloader to install a recovery manager.
The noob guide will help you a lot. You need to first unlock your bootloader before you do any flashing.
Once that is done a recovery like Clockworkmod Recovery needs to be flashed, I'm pretty sure you can just do this through Rom Manager.
At this point, your options are expanded greatly. For most roms and kernels, you just need to download the rom, and drag and drop it into your internal sd card. After that you can go into recovery via Rom Manager. Once there, wipe your factory settings, cache, and dalvik cache (in advanced). Once this is done, do apply zip from sd card then choose from internal card then navigate to the rom you downloaded. Just make sure you want to do this because it will wipe everything from your phone except what is on your sd cards.
You don't need to mess around with the zip files at all when you download them. Just take the file you downloaded and get it to your sd card. The recovery will do the rest. Same goes with kernels. Just make sure that you have the right one for what rom you're on and flash it in recovery when after you are done setting up your new rom.
As far as roms go it just depends what you want. Right now its the motoblur or cm7 and just read what rom has the features you want the most.
Hopefully this helps a little, this is a basic idea of what you have to do. Flashing roms is not as hard as you think. Just be careful unlocking the bootloader. Anything else just ask away.

As far as which rom to go with, it depends on what you want.
If you want webtop and fingerprint scanner, and most the little blur apps that come with the stock phone with more mods and features go with wet dream, its a pretty nice rom
If all you want is webtop and fingerprint scanner and dont care about blur, go with a deblurred rom, I have used darkside and alien roms and they are both great, but I would say darkside has the most extra features. Aura also falls in this category.
If you want the fingerprint scanner then you can choose CM7 Weekly #4, or Neutrino Rom, which is based off of CM7 W#4, however both have some issues with wifi/bluetooth that you might want to read the forums about before flashing, and also Neutrino requires much more additional flashing for extra features, which is a good and a bad thing, good because you don't have to get any features you don't want and bad because you spend more time downloading and flashing zips.
If you don't care about webtop/fingerprint scanner/blur apps, and just want speed and stability then CM7 Ba2tf is the way to go, its completely stable and very fast as long as you follow install instructions.

android-sdk will allow you to use fast boot and adb and allow phone to communicate to the pc in the event it messes up and you will need fastboot and adb shell to root and unlock the bootloader

As to what you said and the guy above you, do i HAVE to unlock the bootloader? Im always gonna be on ATT. Can I just root, install the needed apps and install CM7?

Well I believe you're confused, which is understandable.. What you're talking about is unlocking the phone by buying a code to put in so you can use any carriers sim card, you don't need to do that
to unlock the bootloader you just follow the steps in the noob guide for unlocking, that will allow you to install a custom recovery, which, yes, is required for flashing any custom roms
Yes you have to unlock the bootloader, install clockwork mod recovery and then a custom rom. there is some work here, it is all documented in the development section of this forum. As for a rom, I am currently on cm9, however for stability I would suggest cm7 by Turl and team Atrix.
unlocking your bootloader IS different than unlocking the phone to other carriers its 2 differnt things and yes
before a custom rom can be installed the bootloader has to be unlocked

I'm new to this. Successfully rooted and installed SGH-I717-UCLF6BS along with CWM and SU yesterday. I tried without avail to install CM9, which was my end goal. However, no lock. I kept getting getprop failures, etc. Even when removing the first two lines that utilize getprop, it still failed with no error message at that time.
I'm trying to several things.
1. Is the SGH-I717-UCLF6BS the closest thing to stock ICS upgrade available (i don't mind that it includes root and wifi tether)
2. Are there further prerequisites to installing CM9 that I'm missing, I can't find a clear answer on the web other than stuff 2 months old.
3. If I need to do a warranty claim in the future, do we have a entirely stock rom I can upload to clear out my custom roms? Link please!
Thanks! I'm enjoying the upgrade, but hoping a little CM9 might allow a little higher level of performance and tuning! Nova launcher is still giving me lag once and a while, so I'd like to try out the performance cpu scheme to see if it helps.

1) yes. I think this is as close a you will get to stock.
2) cm9 will be a new rom. You will not really have a prerequisite, just flash away.
3) there is a thread with the stock rom. Have a look in the development thread.
cM9 is not whAt will get you the performance it will be the kernel you install

Thanks. I would like to say that the last statement is a little inaccurate from what I've seen. CM9 comes with some prebuilt overclocking and additionally the removed bloatware etc, means that it runs MUCH smoother. OMG smooth.

Official CM9 does NOT come with "prebuilt overclocking" -- rather, it is built from optimized code and other tweaks that make it operate more smoothly. It is also free of all the bloat that both Samsung and the carriers add to their roms.
In other words, the Official CM9 builds come with the same cpu speed options as stock.
That said, Official CM9 DOES come with the settings menu options you can later use to set up overclocking IF you install an overclocking kernel after installing the base CM9 (example OC kernel: hotkernel r2), OR if you install hotwire's kanged version of CM9 directly, which has his OC/undervolt kernel built in (currently at RC1 v10.1).
I'm on hotwire's version, and it's amazing!

I got a second hand T-mobile Amaze 4G and since it's second hand, I don't have very accurate info regarding what the previous guy had done with it. I've been reading extensively the forums for past weeks since all this stuff was new to me and I'm better now but still have a few questions though.
What I want to achieve is to have a stable ICS ROM on my phone. If I understood correctly, as of now nightly build of Cyanogenmod and
Info regarding my phone:
A) Carrier is T-mobile.
B) Probably is S-on, I can be wrong.
C) Have no idea about it's SuperCID status.
D) It's recovery was "CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.7" but I installed 4EXT Recovery Touch V.1.0.0.5 RC7 on it since I read most ROMs require this.
(That's all I can think off from what I read is required to know about one's phone, but if not, ask me and I'll do my best to reply)
My questions:
1- Since my phone's carrier is T-mobile, do I still have to s-off my phone if I want to install ICS on it?
2- If the previous question's answer is positive, do I have to run Juopunutbear under Ubuntu? I read unlimited.io's website and they suggested Ubuntu and removed Windows versions of Juopunutbear due to compatibility (and user trolls) but I see youtube tutorials on to do it under Windows. Is it advised to do it under Ubuntu? It's hard to download 700Mb and also work under Ubuntu for me.
3- Which ROM is better for me? I'm a game developer and just need a stable phone so I can test my game on it. I need SD card access when I mount the phone to my computer so I can easily deploy my games. I do like the stock ICS look of Cyanogenmod but apparently Revolution is more stable, right? I'm open to other alternatives, I just want a stable ROM and hopefully look of stock ICS.
4- I tried installing both of the Cyanogenmod and Revolution but after the installing them and restarting the phone, it gets stuck at htc logo. I've read that this can be due to s-on but I also read that T-mobile phones do not require those steps. So this is my main problem now.

Update
I put the the 4EXT recovery into SmartFlash mode and then flashed the Cyanogenmod again and after the install, it did not stuck at htc logo but when I unlock the phone, it freezes after 1-2 seconds and the auto restarts! :'(

Thanks for the reply. What's I believe is missing from that topic is that you need to upgrade the firmware. I think that's why my phone gets frozen after 1-2 seconds, amsearching for the firmware I have to upgrade.
Another question to my initial ones:
5- If I upgrade my firmware, will I be able to install GB ROMs again on it? Or do I have to downgrade my firmware in order to do so?
did you wipe completely before flashing the ROM? Wipe cache, dalvik cache and wipe data?

Yes, I run the Super Wipe script, "Super_Wipe_Amaze_4G.zip", so it does all that. I strongly believe my problem is that I didn't install the stock ICS ROM before installing Cyanogenmod and am downloading the latest one.
So I have two questions:
1) When I upgrade my firmware to ICS, how am I will be able to install GB ROMs again? Do I have to install older firmwares first?
2) Which ICS ROM has stock lookingness of ICS but with most features and stability?

Cm10 is a jellybean rom and wont work until your phone is already running ics. If youre on gb, install a stock tmobile ics ruu and then flash cm10. For stock look and performance id recommend the energy rom.
Also someone correct me if im wrong but youll have to soff to go back to gb

Yes the problem WAS that I had to flash stock ICS RUU first then flash any ICS custom ROM over it. I now have a nice CryogenMod 10 on my device. It's not complete but I really love how it looks! Thanks to it's great devs.
It's not that stable and I see
And it lacks SD card drive mount which I used a lot, maybe I try to use AirDroid instead. Have to try it for a few days.

Thanks Hassan, what I meant by stock is not the sense look, I don't like it. What I meant is original ICS look that Nexus 7 has for example. The look that CryogenMod has. What I was asking is that is there any other ROM which looks like CryogenMod but is more stable and has more features?
And is there any comparison chart between current state of ICS ROMs? Which ones are good for daily usage?
And I still have my questions:
1) What should I do if I want to get back to GingerBreak ROMs? Should I have to install/flash GB RUU and then a custom GB ROM over it?
2) My WiFi signal is worse, like half of what is used to be, since I'm sitting next to my router, so do I have to run/flash anything to fix this?
And let me thank EXT4 Recovery's SmartFlash, I didn't need to s-off my device, which is tricky, needs Ubuntu to work fine, etc.

I dont think were allowed to compare roms here. But for the look you like with features, there are several options. One is fourth bar infusion by craigtut. Another is the one im using which is jellybam. A personal favourite rom is the dark glass 0.3 pacman by josegaire. These are tge roms with a nexus look.. the wifi signal must have something to do with the rom. Try a different one and see if it improves.

if your looking for stable roms which are fully functional with a good battery life and ICS stock looking i'd recommend Android Revolution HD 3.0.1 | ICS | High Quality & Performance | Best STOCK ROM or |Aug 6th| Energy™ -.¸¸.·´¯ ICS 4.0.3 Tweaks / Beats / Blue ¯´·.¸¸. - other roms are great aswell these are stock base so yea fully functional!! :good:

Thanks but both of them have the sense look but CyanogenMod has the Nexus look that I'm after but is not mature as the other two that you mentioned.

well it's your choice and for the downgrade part thats the procedure just flash a GB ROM but never seen a post who downgrade their firmware version you can try if you want it wont hurt you..but if you want to go to stock flash the ics ruu it'll do the same thing and the wifi issue i'd say try flashing the [25.MAR.13] T-Mobile OTA 2.14.531.30 [STOCK] and then flash cyanogenMod if the problem still exist ask from the Cyanogen users whether is it a problem with the rom itself

Since you are looking for a "Nexus look" the fourth bar ROM by craigtut aims for that.

I actually did the very same thing, flashed the latest RUU which is 2.14.531.30 [STOCK] and then CM10 on it.

Thanks. I think the only ROMs that have the Nexus look are CM and FourthBar, right? Is FourthBar more stable for daily use than CM10? I love CM but sudden lags and occasional bugs is irritating.
The fourth bar has no issues at all. There used to be an older version of it called fourth bar nexus that was even more stable with better battery life but i think it has been taken down. Fourth bar infusion is a great daily driver though.

why dont you just flash a stable ICS rom and flash a go launcher theme which looks like nexus?? solves all the problems right

Can you compare it to CM10? What are advantages and disadvantages between the two.

I don't know what you meant by "stable ICS rom" but the latest ICS that T-mobile released has Sense UI but I want Nexus UI.
Your phone carrier is tmobile.. But.. The phone was not made for tmobile.. It was made for telus..
Telus would luck up a cockroach if they could derive a profit from even 1 customer.
You need super cid.. So you need to Soff first.
Then you can flash anything in the future
I've seen a big difference in problems between those who do Soff and those who don't.. I watch closely since I did my Soff.. It's worth it.

I flashed this "RUBY_ICS_35_S_TMOUS_2.14.531.3_R2_Radio_1.14.550L. 17DC_30.78.550L.15_release_262141_signed.zip" (and then CM10 over it) so I think it's a T-mobile ROM, right?

By stable Rom I meant something like arhd or energy Rom or that infusion or something like that Rom (I didn't use it reason I can't remember tje name) then get a nexus ui theme from playstore....thing kazz said was since your s on you mite face weird issues when flashing roms and its good to be s off...
