I have the latest OTA 4.3.5 update and am rooted. I would like to backup my phone with CWM just to have a safe backup....BUT I don't want any problems or issues with backing up OR future OTA updates, like the upcoming Ice Creame update which is surely coming for the Atrix. So my question is: can I backup my phone now using CWM and still OTA update without any issues?? OTA updates seem to preserve my existing setup and homescreen and I would not want to do anything to change that. If there are any possible issues I will simply not backup up now and wait for the next OTA update, then backup.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Here's my homescreen so you can see why I am so cautious

I'm currently rooted, have titanium backup, deleted a bunch of bloatware, but that's about it. Will this screw up my phone when I update to Froyo via OTA update? OR can I just safely update when T-Mo rolls out froyo?
Thanks in advanced!
EDIT: Oh, and lets say I called T-Mo and got an unlock code, and unlocked my phone RIGHT NOW with the current FW, JID, will I lose the unlock?
Bump, anybody have a solution to my question?

Your YMMV. Last time Tmo rolled out JI6, many people with removed bloatware complained about issues. Stuck at Boot up. Not sure, if you would have any issues. only time will tell. If you have a backup of your stock, you can restore and manually force a update request once its rolled out. hope this helps.
=/ I don't have a backup of my stock
What do I do then?
My understanding is the update.zip file from rooting was causing the brick issues. If an ota comes all you have to do is unroot your phone before you install. You can be on a custom rom. I recieved an ota notification while on Bionix and after unrooting I accepted, installed and had no issues. Hopefully that answers your question.
regardless, if an OTA comes I would not accept it. Chances are that if YOU got an OTA update, it was on XDA days/weeks before you got it... and they should have a stock version with Root enabled that you could just flash.
If you do not have a backup, make one now! It's too easy to not have one. It's in the sticky if you do not know how.
Now I know with titanium back up you can save apps its been a while since I have got into the whole rooting deal and I am thinking about doing it for the TFP. Now my question is with Titanium backup can I save stock apps i.e: App locker/Backup , Asus splash, and others also stock widgets? if there is another way to do so please inform me I just want to make sure I can keep all the stock goodness that you cant get back if you wipe and root.
-Thanks in advance
it wouldn't be a good idea because those apps are in /system.
not saying its not possible, but OTA will require you to manually update your current firmware to stock before you can receive the OTA firmware update.
Well I just want the apps really they all work fine for me so I wouldnt need any ota updates as for firmware I would run a mod rom if I do go this route. I understand the whole no ota's etc due to rooting/flashing custom boot image
Ok, so here is the deal, I understand that somewhere in the hay stack of this forum is instructions on how I am going to make this happen but I have ADD and can't keep focus lurking the forum for answers so here it is. Looks like the ICS update is almost ready to roll out for razr so...........
I have a Droid Razr
Rooted
System Version 6.12.173.XT912
Android Version 2.3.6
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-g61e3522
I can install System version 6.12.181 but I'm not going to because the last time I did a system update I lost root on my phone and was a ***** to get it back to root. But the notification to update my phone every 12 hrs is getting annoying.
So when ICS rolls out what are my options to get the update installed?
Do I need to unroot my phone. If so how do I do this?
Do I need to update the system version to 6.12.181 before I update to ICS?
How can I Update to 6.12.181 safely?
Will there be a version of the ICS update that I can install while still rooted?
Thank you to anyone that take the time to help out with my questions ahead of time. I feel I would rather be prepared then to come up with a problem later. Also I apologize if this has already been addressed.

Voodoo rootkeeper will keep your root from .173 to .181 no problem. Not sure what you're asking for in the first question, you options will be to update or not. Using voodoo rootkeeper you SHOULD be able to unroot (with backup), update to ICS, then re-root however it's unknown if this method will work 100% until ICS comes out.
You shouldn't have to update to .181 to get ICS because ICS will completely wipe whatever is in the system folders (shouldn't matter what version you're on), however you might not see ICS OTA update until you update to .181. Again, won't know until it happens
Here are a few words of wisdom:
1) When rooting, always install the latest Motorola USB drivers, available here : http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-...tware_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Drivers
2) Before applying OTA, download a free program called OTA Rootkeeper, follow the procedure, backup your root, then do a "temp unroot" and then restore root.
2) After restoring root on a newly updated OS, always install the superuser program and rerun the su binary update. Even if it is up to date, reapply the update to make sure it works properly. Afterwards, reinstall busybox.
3) All OTAs are incremental updates (this reduces their size). You need to update to every OTA before applying the next OTA. The only way to bypass an OTA would be to fastboot the device to a newer version, but you would lose all of your information.
4) We're here for you! If you have any troubles, just come back.
Here's my opinion.
When the OTA is released, fb to stock 181 then download the OTA.
Rooting with the utilities available today takes about 5 minutes and punching about 4 keys on your computer.

Do we know yet what will happen as far as OTA updates on rooted phones?
Will OTA not even be offered to rooted phones? Will the OTA complete and then phone won't be rooted? Will OTA complete and then phone will still be rooted?
Will OTA Rootkeeper work?
Coming from a Droid X, I know that OTA wouldn't go unless your phone was nearly 100% stock.
Not sure how things working over at Samsung.
I hopefully will finally have my phone next week. With the consideration that I'd like to restore apps and appdata via Titanium, I'm wondering what the best way to proceed would be. Root phone immediately, restore with Titanium, then get the OTA (if it will even run on a rooted phone?)? If I lose root for a short time after that, I could live since I've already restored my data. I'd really like to keep things as close to stock as possible, with the exception of obtaining root.
I rooted my phone just for the sole purpose of using wifitether and kept the stock rom. I didn't use the wire trick, so I don't think I fully rooted it? Any case, I have a notification to do an OTA system update and I'm afraid to do it since I have the phone exactly how I want it.
If I don't need to update, how do I hide the notification? What does the update do?
Thanks!

OTA's require the stock recovery so you can't apply them when rooted. You didn't say which model (Sprint or VM) and that makes a difference.
For Sprint you can backup your apps, data and settings then relock the bootloader, flash the RUU and OTA, install a custom recovery and restore your backups. That will give you the updated firmware and stock ROM from the March OTA. In addition to the firmware updates, the ROM changes include the Sprint connection optimizer and some fixes for other software.
If you are a VM user and haven't installed the March OTA you can still use the above sequence but then you won't be able to flash the RUU if you decide to get S-OFF so you should do that first if you have any plans for it. After flashing the RUU there will be two OTA updates (November and March) to apply for the stock configuration.
