Here is a link to the three books I've found for Android one for Development and the other two for basic system mods and such. They're kinda helpful for me, as I'm learning, maybe someone else will find them helpful as well. They're in a rar/zip file. Enjoy!

No problem. :] If it helps people and maybe we can get more people onboard with learning how to mod and such, we can have some more Devs. Gotta have a starting point, so I figured why not.
I am downloading now. Thanks for sharing!
No problem!

I have no experience, but i'd like to learn how to make my own custom rom.
Does anyone know what i'd need for a Thunderbolt GB rom?
I've looked into it and read about Kitchens and how you need them, but don't fully understand.
I'd like to know if the community could help me out here.
I could google it and I have, but I don't get any results that are specifically for the Thunderbolt.
Please go easy on me. :/
I can't answer your question so I apologize for taking a spot in your thread but I don't see any reason people would be rude/harsh towards you especially considering you posted in the proper section! Good luck and hope to see a ROM from you someday!

the phone model does not matter really and you wont find anything specific for the thunderbolt.
Install Linux right off the bat... Dealing with Windows and using environments are a PIA.
Download apktool, kitchen, gimp, and your base ROM whether it be the GB leak or MR2. Read up on how the system works, various editing techniques, and suck up all the info possible. It really is a learning process, not really something someone can tell you how to do.
That's what I did/do to learn.

You do realize too that some people, no matter how hard they may try, are just not cut out to this type of stuff?
I'm not saying you can't do this, but just be aware that the end result may not be what you want it to be.
Thank you Theory and Yareally! I'm good at researching, looking into things and learning
I just needed to know what exactly I needed to look up.

Ya, I remember back in my days in school when these people were in computer classes with me saying how cool it was to learn to program.
Half of them, while very bright, lacked a certain "ability" to grasp programming, shall we say.
I was just curious if anybody could point me to any information regarding how to start *making* themes. Like how they're assembled...it seems to just be a bunch of media, but what exactly, I don't see a manifest or anything in there that directs what to go where. Also trying to figure out what's in the APK's? Anybody have any input here? A link? Some knowledge? A simple theme to tear apart (and/or how to do it)?
I'm not much of an artist, I'm just trying to figure out how this stuff works, nobody wants to tell anybody anything, it seems, I don't get why .
Also, how does the theme tie into the framework at all? I'm assuming this is the framework/SDK version? Like they're typically just icons or pictures and the like, no?
Thanks in advance, guys .
No manifest? Have you ever unzipped a theme?
I would do a lot of reading. But since it is in a sticky... Im def not going to link you.
The apks contain the modified images and xml's.
Oh and this is a question. This goes in the q&a section.

Yes, this is the 3rd one I opened, I don't see anything like a manifest document. Some have the installation script, but that's just boiler plate stuff regarding installation, the rest is just a .JAR or .APK - both of which are most commonly used for compiled code.
I apologize for asking this in this forum, I keep forgetting that this isn't a forum dedicated to android dev, but only postings of android dev, not questions. My mistake. I ask that an admin move this to the Q&A section.
I didn't see nor do I see any stickies here regarding theme structure .
I'll report my post now.
Try the themes board? There was a guide there last I checked.

Thx, and I do want to give back and help the community. It's what I like doing. Unfortunately I'm not getting much headway in the realm of Kernel or ROM work, but I'm sure eventually I'll find something.
People get antsy when the rules aren't followed, which is understandable. I just keep forgetting the dev section isn't a place for Q&A - blah. 2nd time this happened - this will very hopefully be the last, though >.<.
Does anyone know where to find a custom dialer theme for the photon or how to make one. I would like a different one to match my shady blue theme. Im rooted, deodexed, running homebase with an unlocked bootloader and 1.3 oc kernel. I would also like to learn how to do it if anyone knows. Thanks!
PS: I will also attach the original Blur Dialer and Blur Phone apk's just in case it may be needed.
EDIT: Thanks to MedicStuder and Xtremekilla09 the new blur dialer was ported to the photon here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19515450#post19515450

PDF file that was part of the for dummies line. :] I can zip it up and attach it if you like, has stuff on theming, buildings apps, icons, and stuff like that, not sure how helpful it'd be, but figured I'd toss the offer out there.

I have like four or five other books on Android OS, building things, tweaking stuff, and yada yada. Just different things. I've collected some books over the past while to try and help me. So if you need anything I'll take a look at what I've got. And you're welcome. I forgot to say that. Haha.
Lol sounds good. Send me what you've got and i'll definitely read through it and start my education adventure haha. Hopefully soon I will have more to offer the xda community other than a bootanimation
Once I get home I will upload them.

Ok, like the heading says, I'm looking for somebody with graphics knowledge who can help CypherROM look more polished. You don't have to be the most saavy when it comes to digging around in the resource folder as myself and unixdood are good at that and just need the graphics to go with the ROM. If interested, please PM me ASAP as I am moving into the beta stage testing of my ROM and want to get it right before releasing a final build. Even if you're new to rooting but are good with photoshop don't hesitate to PM me as I like people who learn as they go (like me lol). I have a rough logo that is on the thread in Evo View development and have a few other images or the originals that I will send whoever would like to take up this task and get mad propz for doing so. Thanks for checking this out!
Bump. Come on guys, one of you has to want to contribute to the community!

Hey no problem. If you get that theme to work for your ROM, I will switch it to my daily driver!
So yeah, like it says above. Is there a dev who wouldn't mind teaching me some things? I'm not exactly a noob. Have an IT degree and experience writing in C++. No expert, but I learn quickly.
Would love to improve the dev community for this phone and many others in the future. Know devs don't really come into the general section a lot, but if u do or could pass it along I would appreciate it.
Thanks

I'm no developer (just working on apps, not ROMs), but I would suggest you read this thread. As Cyanogen says, you should start by learning some Java and working on an app or two. I would suggest acquiring a book to help you get started.
I started off with this guide for getting started with apps. I would suggest reading through the links in Cyanogen's thread and continuing from there.

Thanks, went thru that thread. Cyanogen's post was really informative. Me and a friend taught ourselves java when we were 15. But that's been 15 years, millions of brain cells, and seems like 2 lives ago.
Have to relearn it again. Remember back then we read java for dummies, lol. Anyone remember those? Taught us html pretty well, but I used that more than java.
Will check my local library for what they have and youtube tonight for tutorials.
Thanks again

Thanks for all the kind words and info. I really doubt I will have a rom out anytime soon. Have a few ideas for apps I would like to work on, so if that is the best way to learn then ill probably try that route.
It is all created by man, so the logic comes easy to me at times. Well, if it makes sense anyways. Sometimes I smh in frustration, "why did they decide to do it like this when the opposite makes so much sense?".

Do yourself a favor, NEVER fall back on construction. Everything is backwards and nothing is done right anymore. Lol
If your wanting to get into apk development there is a video guide tutorial that's excellent. Very comprehensive guide and its easy to follow along. Can't think of the OP's user name atm, I'll post a link later when I get home.
