I currently have a Motorola Xoom and I do love it, but I have come to realize that comfortably holding it with one hand while using it is not easy. It's constantly slipping out of my hands while I try to maneuver it around. I would like something just a bit more portable and maneuverable. So I am looking for a good 7" android tablet with 3G capability. Here are the specs I am looking for:
OS: Android 2.2 or 2.3
Screen: Capacitive Multi-touch
Processor: Dual-core (if possible, but not necessary)
RAM: 512MB (at least)
Internal Memory: 2GB minimum (4GB-8GB preferred)
Memory Expansion: MicroSD is a MUST!
WiFi: 802.11 B/G/N (Prefer Dual-Band N, but not necessary)
Mobile: 3G (4G would be nice too, but not necessary)
Price: Prefer under $200 but under $300 is more reasonable.
The closet tablets I have found to these specs are the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Dell Streak 7. I would like something that has a decent developer backings because I do love modding with ROMs and such. What scares me about the Dell Streak 7 is all the reports of soft bricking it by the NAND becoming Read-Only.
So any tablet gurus out there know of anything that meets the above specs? Thank you for your time!

Am actually looking for the same thing.
I've been using the Nook Color with CM7 and feel it is the perfect size for me as I do a lot of reading with the odd bit of surfing. It's perfect for reading on the train (with one hand).
For me, what's missing is 3G capability to be truly on the go but have not found anything at the moment. Would also be nice to have Honeycomb.
I'm waiting on the Galaxy Tab 8.9 which could just be the sweet spot in terms of size but would like to have a hands on. Also it is a bit more expensive. Maybe a Viewsonic 7" as well based on some quick searches or a Dell Streak (would be curious from other Viewsonic or Streak owners on their ideas?).
We just order 1 Ematic eGlide 7" 4GB Tablet it appears to have what you are looking for. I will post more here once I get it and see what it is like.

Ematic MID 7" Google Android OS Multimedia Tablet & Kobo eReader - 4GB with WiFi
I am just wondering how you like your Ematic? My wife found one on Ebay and thought it would be good for the kids for Christmas.
Good luck finding the original Galaxy Tab 7 inch (P1000 with 3G), even a used one.
Looks like the Dell Streak 7 is your best bet. There seems to be many refurb on ebay which cost < $200. This should be right in your budget.
If you have been using the Moto Xoom, you may find the single-core GTab a bit slow. I did have both the GTab and Streak 7 at one time (until I sold the Streak 7). I definite find the Tegra 2 of the Streak 7 much faster than the Hummingbird of the GTab in terms of app opening and screen transition / swiping. However, the reason I kept the GTab and not the Streak is that the GTab is far superior in terms of Adobe Flash performance - I am talking about watching Flash video in the web browser, NOT through Youtube app. I have the Gingerbread 2.3.3 Overcome ROM & kernel on the GTab and never had the urge to upgrade to HC or ICS, because it is running so well. If I remember correctly, I had DJ Steve's Streakdroid Gingerstreak on the Streak 7 when I sold it.
The GTab can play HD Flash video in the browser (all 720p smoothly, and even some 1080p in low bitrate). The Streak cannot even do 720p. There is a known problem of Tegra 2 with Adobe Flash, which affects all Tegra 2 tablets of that time including the Xoom, Streak 7, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and others. If you don't watch a lot of web videos and only stored videos, then both the GTab and Streak 7 do equally well at 720p.
The GTab also has great battery life (tested 5.5 hours on wifi watching web videos; tested 7.5-8 hours ebook reading + little wifi web browsing; dunno about standby time because I always plug it in when not in use). The Streak can only do 3.5 hour continuous wifi internet video and about 5-5.5 hour mixed activities.
I see many refurb Streak 7s on ebay, which come with Honeycomb. I have never used the Streak with HC (official or custom ROM), therefore I cannot tell you how good it is.
If you find your tablet slippery, you can always buy a gel back cover.
If you can wait a month or so, Google may be releasing a 3G Nexus 7. The only thing you'd be losing is the SD slot. But if you are used to using the Xoom you don't want to use Android 2.x on a tablet. The experience is so much worse IMO it feels like a giant phone. You should look with something with at least HC, preferably ICS or JB.

I really doubt any new model name brand 3G tablet would cost $250 or less.

I want to buy my wife a 7" tablet for Christmas. Desired specs are: Android 2.2+, easily rooted and market install(I have rooted and installed market on a Pandigital Novel 7" table and a Viewsonic Gtab with a lot of help from members). She primarily uses it for crossword puzzles(shortz) and web surfing. I would like for it to be able to access a ad-hoc wifi, the Pandigital(hers) can not do this. I do not think she would need a lot of storage(memory?). Would 512mb of ram and 1ghz processor be over-kill? And it needs to be in the $150.00-$200.00 range. Could go slightly higher for an exceptional deal. Thanks
Amazon Fire easy. Dual-Core, best deal available, root should be available soon, maybe even a Honeycomb port!
Maybe look for a Dell Streak deal. Waaaay underrated. The resolution is criticized as being limited, but that's a little silly. It's a 7 inch screen so you can only REALLY use so much resolution before the letters get to small to read. The real problems with it are (I have one) poor battery life and poor viewing angles. Neither are big issues for many users. If you are sharing your 7 inch tablet with many viewers and have to watch from a wide angle, you may be unhappy if you are viewing from 50 degrees off-angle. In reality, it's never been a problem. Battery life really does suck...6-8 hours of "on time" and 4-5 or a little less with constant use. If that's not enough (it's not always for me), then just be aware. Ergonomically, it's among the best I've used. There's nothing on the market today in the 7 inch size compelling enough to make me change.

I did briefly try the NT at B&N about 2 weeks ago. It seemed okay.
I was comparing a stock Nook Tablet side by side with my Archos 70IT, which has a 1ghz single-core processor(8g mem, 256 meg of RAM, Zeam 3.1.7 launcher, Android 2.21 OS (Archos 2.1.8 firmware).
The NT's display only seemed only just slightly better, with both tablet displays set at max brightness (Archos 70IT has 800 x 480 res.).
The NT's performance with the two-core 1ghz processor and 1 gig RAM did not seem to be dramatically better either. I was expecting better performance.
Has the NT's processor been governed down below 1ghz to improve battery life?
I am in the market for a new 7 or 8 inch Android tablet for about $ 300. I will never buy an Archos product again.
Just for full disclosure I think Archos firmware support and customer support sucks, every firmware update seems to break more features than it fixes.
I'm still not sure about the NT, as it does not exhibit any significant improvement over my Archos 70it.
I find the performance to be great. It is much quicker than my Fire and plays video better than my Iconia A500.
The only reason I found to root the NT was for the keyboard so I could get auto-correct.
This is my first tablet, but I find it to be quick and snappy. I have only side-loaded apps from Amazon and apks from the web. I love the App Manager 1.4 app which allows me to move the apps onto the NT main display. Battery life is terrific. It feels light to hold for reading. The rubberized bevel also helps with grip.
The screen is fantastic and it is possible to read outdoors. I am hoping someone will figure out how to get Skype to recognize the microphone. The lack of a camera, Bluetooth and GPS are a minus. Also I have to say life would be easier with access to the Android Market and Google Apps. I don't want to root it, so I will have to live with that shortcoming.
It is a great value overall.

Well, what did you try out on it? I can't see that you'd be able to make a very direct comparison, assuming that you were trying out a vanilla unit, you would have only been able to access the Nook's default menu and built-in apps.
Compared Angry Birds, NT's web browser, evaluated stock app launch times for Soduku, crossword, etc. Looked at web page renderings, page refreshes, etc

Once I enabled "downloads from unknown sources" the stock Nook Tablet came alive for me. I'm very happy with the unrooted stock machine and it's capabilities.
for $250, it's snappy. Yes, I'm happy with it. I will be more happy once the dev's have a workaround in place for installing CM, whatever the version.
Take my observations with a grain of salt as they are based on limited observations. My dad has the Nook Tablet and my son just got an Iconia A500 for an early Christmas present and I noted the following:
While the A500 has a higher-resolution display, it hardly matters as it is a 10" tablet and the pixel density of the Nook Tablet is at least as good.
The A500 is OK although with the Tegra chipset I was expecting more. The Nook Tablet (OMAP 4430 chipset) just seemed zippier stock. Apples to oranges, though, as the A500 is running Honeycomb and the NT is a fork of Gingerbread.
While the A500's display is not as "awful" as some have described, the color is far more limited (about 200K+ colors vs. a purported 16 million for the NT) and the viewing angle isn't anywhere near as good. Blacks aren't true at many angles with the A500. I preferred the NT's sharper, brighter display.
I haven't had much time with games, productivity apps or media. Video seemed just fine on both - I haven't been able to verify "choppy" video on the A500 but it seems like the Tegra chipset just isn't quite as good at supporting as many encodings as the OMAP chipset is.
For the price, I'm very impressed with the Nook Tablet's offerings. Seems a solid performer for what you pay.
Given the tone of the people who actually own one at this point, I think a better (and less prejudicial) title for this topic would be "Is anyone unhappy with the performance of stock Nook Tablet". Most seem quite happy with the performance, especially compared to the previous generation Nook Color.
I did not have the nook color so I can't compare it but I do have the tablet, at least until tomorrow when I send it back. I am very unhappy with mine. I think it feels sluggish all the time. My kid plays jeweled and it slows to a crawl after a few minutes. I have it rooted and I switch between adw and spb launcher. I don't use the stock launcher at all. I hate that I have to use so many workarounds just to do basic"tablet" functions. I don't think it should be marketed as a tablet. Its Just an advanced reader until you root it and then it is still limited. For you guys that are happy
I'm glad it worked out for you but even for 250 I still want it to perform at least close to as good as my phone and the NT leaves a lot to be desired....IMHO.

Very happy!
As far as hardware, I'm very satisfied. It seems only a little slower than my Dell Streak 7. I love the crisp screen and my only real complaint is the weak speaker which I fixed somewhat with Volume+ app. The battery life is outstanding. Downloaded video is great.
Unrooted, using sideloaded apps, I was more than satisfied since I am not an app freak, but rooting really gives a lot more flexibility for personalizing.
I am very happy with the NT, so much so that I'm selling my DS7 since it just sits on a shelf.
I have a Nook Color (with Phiremod 7) - very snappy
I have a Nook Tab (very good battery, i use it alot, and havent charged battery in 6 days)
I have a Acer A500 and hardly use it. Poor battery life.
Out of curiosity...what does the NT give you that the Dell streak doesn't? Other than the better battery life and display?

That's it - better screen and battery life. But I found out those two things are what's most important for how I use my device. I need/want a good, clear screen and the NT is MUCH better than the DS7. I also found that good battery life is important on the long trips I make and again the DS7 comes up short. I read the reviews on the DS7, which complained about the exact issues but I bought it anyway. I only used the camera once and I never used the GPS.
I initially tried a NC but found it too slow compared to the Dell. The NT is just as responsive as the DS7.
The nook tablet is my very first tablet and i absolutely love it. The kids play games on it and i use it for hulu plus, web browsing and reading. I'm not to worried about it's lack of bluetooth a camera or gps because when i'm using the tablet away from home it's tethered to my rooted, unlocked atrix 4g running cm7 which has all those functions. I cancelled my kindle fire pre order within hours of the NT's announcement because the sdcard and 1gb of memory were more important to me than saving $50.
For me the size is perfect and it does everything i need a tablet to do.
The biggest thing for me, is the great screen. Ive looked at dozens of tablets and the nook tablet is one of the best ive seen.
I also like the way it feels in my hand. The all glass tablets are uncomfortable to me.

I think it performs very well. It is my first tablet though and the only other touch screen device I have is a 2nd gen iPod Touch. It has basically replaced that in all areas accept music and podcasts.
Apps load fast.
Reading is great (it's what I use the Tablet for the most actually. The built-in dictionary is great).
I have Dolphin HD and Opera Mobile sideloaded, both of which run well.
Fast scrolling isn't quite as fluid as my iPod Touch handles, but I'd liken it to a small framerate drop in a video game. It was noticeable (to me at least), but it has become natural now.
Really though, the tablet is becoming my most used electronic device (more used than my 360 even after getting Skyrim ).
Also, the battery life is really great. I usually have around 40-50% left after a day's use. I turn wifi off before putting it to sleep and while reading though and have power save mode on.
For the price, this thing is excellent. Once you root it, its a different beast. The only thing I wish for is copy/paste - how or why that was left out is beyond me.
I dont care what anyone says. I cant wait to get one then ..... stalk teamwin.
I have an acer 500, xoom, nook color and used to have an ipad and a gtab.... and im more excited about this device then any other ive anticipated.
Also, my mother just got the kindle fire and thats pretty nice also. Gonna be a dog fight.

I'm considering buying a Galaxy Tab 10.1 however if I'm buying one I want to be able to connect it to the TV (a 46" Samsung* 1080p LCD) and play 1080p x264 (most likely in mkv container) smooth. I've been looking for information but couldn't find consistance, some say it's laggy and some say that it works fine. Also does it output true 24p?
So I'm asking here, does it work today and is it pretty much flawless or should I wait a little longer and buy a Tegra 3 tablet?
*Not an actual Samsung branded TV but it's a "designer brand" TV and they use Samsung hardware, not that it would really be relevant in this case.

Nope. Tegra2 doesn't do 1080p well, and if you want "flawless" you're getting a bit ahead of the tech. I don't know how Tegra3 fares; I've heard it's better, but not flawless. I've never seen it myself, though. I'd suggest just getting a dedicated media streamer (Roku or ?) or a PS3 for that purpose.

I've already got an Sandy Bridge HTPC for stationary media playback. To be perfectly honest I would probably not use it that much on my own tv but when I'm over at friends, etc.
Does it do 720p well at least? Thinking mainly of h.264 TV-Shows like the ones you can buy in iTunes and such but probably one and another x264 in matroska container as well. Now I'm not thinking much of playback over HDMI but rather on the screen (which is 1280x800 so 720p would be perfect for that screen). Would be nice to be able to put some movies in 720p on a bunch i 32GB MicroSD cards to watch on flights, train-rides and such (I frequently travel 3-6 hours and watching movies on the cell phone is horrible, laptop works if there's a table and proper space but I feel that a tabelt would be better for the purpose).
If it at least does 720p well I'll probably buy one and have until there are tablets which can handle 1080p flawlessly.

Thanks for the information.
The decision is pretty hard, I previously had an iPad but hated it for several reasons. Some of them being that the screen is 4:3 & only 1024x768, your stuck with the Safari Browser which got the Safari css-sprite bug, Mail.app is useless in comparison to the Gmail app for android, especially if you're a apps user with several addresses and I get past all those with the Galaxy Tab however there are still some of the things that I didn't like which precist such as not being able to use it to watch 1080p movies on a FullHD-TV over HDMI, 10" is kinda big, it's not much smaller then my 13" MacBook Pro (8" would probably be more suitable for me), it's hard on the eyes as an e-reader and can't truly replace an E-Ink device, the usefulness of an tablet is kinda limited since an laptop is a better choice in many cases and the cellphone in most others.
I have to do some thinking (I will most likely end up buying one anyway and replace it with a smaller but specwise beefier device when "premium" 7-8" tablets who handles flawless 1080p starts popping up).
What about you who own this tablet, do you think it's worth buying one today? Is it the best tablet?
I've been looking some one the Asus Transformer Prime as well which is about the same price here but with Tegra 3, better battery life, better connectivity, keyboard dock with extra battery included. However I don't quite like that device as much, frankly the entire semi-ultrabook thing seems a bit silly especially since I've already got my 13" MacBook Pro for all the needs the keyboard-dock would fill, it doesn't look quite as good, it's wifi only (wtf!). It's a great product for all those who doesn't own a Ultrabook or similar notebook (maybe not a notebook at all) and need that but it could never replace a notebook, I already feel that the MacBook Air and Ultrabooks are to limited to replace my MacBook Pro so to replace it with a Tegra 3 semi-ultrabook would be unrealistic. Still if the Transformer Prime looked like the Galaxy Tab and had 3G it would seem like a wise choice (even if you'd throw away the keyboard dock).
If you are in the business for HD videos, go for an Archos G9. (Which will most likely get official ICS way before the GTab101, btw =/ )
They have 250gb!! models and provides flawless 1080p playback for almost any video format known to man and has a native micro HDMI port.
The 3G dongle should work with AT&T.
There's even 2 USB-Host ports!!; one full-size, one microUSB that needs a microUSB male/USB female standard adapter.
Support for USB keyboards, mice, wired LAN adapter, Hard drives.. name it.
If you're into videos more than games, it is THE way to go.
Some try to push tablets in a direction they really aren't suited to go and for some of us it's hard to relate to that. It seems that you have a firm grasp of the limitations and how they affect you though. If it doesn't fit you it just doesn't fit you.
To me it doesn't make much sense to put a lot of emphasis on playback of 1080p encoded video on a Galaxy Tab 10.1 since it is limited in storage space and isn't designed (AFAIK) to do USB host at the same time as HDMI out. Just copying a 2GB file onto this thing takes much longer than it would onto a USB powered external HDD so why would I load it up with a bunch of files when I could have those on a 500GB USB HDD and play them off of a Roku or something.
I do understand though that most who ask simply have a sizable library of 1080p rips already and for those folks I say tread carefully because chances are those files won't play back properly.
I love my tablet though, and carry it around nearly everywhere I go. For web browsing, scheduling, email and basic media consumption this thing is fantastic. I have a few of my son's current favorite movies on it just in case he needs a distraction (720p rips off of bluray) and I have a collection of my favorite TV shows from EZTV that I follow. Mizuu is fantastic at gathering movie and TV show data and presenting everything in an XBMC like interface.
Mizuu seems fantastic, but how can I make it find the stock I have on my NAS, for example?
Would that be possible? Using a CIFS manager, for example..
Thanks for the EZTV tip too; (who said it was tricky to find good Honeycomb apps?)

I'm not sure if anyone else pointed this out, but the GT10 doesn't have an SD slot (or microsd). There is a dongle for USB-host, probably would take a flash drive (or microsd in a USB reader) but as far as I'm concerned it sort of ruins the whole purpose of a tablet to have things hanging off of it (just my opinion). If you need more storage you should stream wirelessly (I never put media on the tab; google music, grooveshark, netflix, and allshare FTW!). Otherwise, go with something that has a bigger HDD or built-in SD reader (or just put up with either lower-res or less movies). The Archos isn't a bad suggestion for your purposes. As far as I understand, that thing is made for media. Of course, it's not as nice as the GT10 as a tablet (none of them are, including the transformer prime), but if you just want something for movies on an airplane, might make more sense.
Oh I didn't realise that it doesn't have an SD-Slot, thanks for pointing it out. That's kinda a dealbreaker for me. It's not a big deal normally as I stream most my media via Plex and music via Spotify but streaming is worthless both on trains and airplanes, even if they sometimes do got WIFI the speed is always closer to dial-up then broadband and useless for media streaming, even surfing the web is usually horrible.
With quite a few people jumping ship, here's the obvious question: using the current best JB ROM for Flyer (e.g. Dexter's), how does the Flyer stack up to the N7?
Considering its newest model tablet on the market and compaired specs I would pikc the N7 any day.

Specs speak for themselves.
Limited storage and no hdmi out. I am tempted to buy a nexus 7 but in the end it is not capable of replacing my Flyer. I would have to keep both
Flyer
Just sayin I'm savin up for the galaxy tab 2 7.0. I love samsung equipment!
Downside on Flyer - old OS or incomplet JB.
Downside on N7;
no pen
no sd card
low storage
no camera (only front one 1.2)
no 3G
no hdmi
some better hardware thow, but with some well known problems with display problems
Nexus 7 aint cheap for no reason looking at all what it does not provide.
N7 simply can not replace Flyer. At least not for me. Seeking for something alse in time if we dont get polished JB.
Edit:
Just realized that our JB rom has less non working stuff that nexus 7 has les then flyer

They n7 has all but replaced my flyer with a couple minor exceptions. Navigon still doesnt work on the n7, so the flyer is my gps unit. No mic in jack, so the flyer is still used for skype/teamspeak...
As for the other points made:
No pen... I don't use the pen, so...
No sd card... That was one thing that originally kept me back from buying an n7, but as it turns out, I don't really need the extra space.
Low storage... 16gb is low?
No (rear facing) camera... I have taken all of 5 pictures with my flyer in the year+ I've had it. Even then, the pictures were awful quality.
No 3g.... Neither does my flyer
No hdmi.... I have used mhl a total of zero times on my flyer...

Everyone's use is different. I use mhl everyday and use a min if 20-30gb
If you don't use the features your loosing the nexus 7 is superior easily. As for how they perform side by side with jelly bean, that's hard to say as their isn't an oem quality jelly bean rom for the Flyer yet, may never be. Honestly probably about the same, flyer might have the edge on gaming believe it or not because stuff has to be optimized for tegra or it won't perform well. But again that's assuming you have a perfect jelly bean rom, which the flyer lacks.
One thing you'll loose over the flyer though is a nice community. The nexus 7 is popular, and a ton of people are complaining about defects and the community is blasting them for it. It's a nightmare. It's about like the chaos you'd expect having a kegger in your living room

Ok so it goes even more; no vibra lol
and worse game performance on N7 then flyer.
Ok what again does it N7 then actually do better? Browse internet pages?
Now it really makes sence why it was so cheap compared to Flyer.
Gaming performance is better but right now developers haven't optimized a whole lot of games for tegra 3. Gameloft for instance. Nexus 7 users are complaining constantly about frame rate issues. But in the long run it'll be better for gaming you can bet on that, developers are working on it. Just sayin now I realize why people *****ed about tegra 3. Tegra chipsets blow everything our of the water... If stuff is optimized for it. Other chipsets work like direct x on a pc

Now why exactly am crazy about this tablet?
first i will tell you a brief history of devices i owned, dunno from where to start, ok lemme list it chronologically according to acquisition:
Galaxy Tab 2
Nexus 7 first gen
Samsung Ativ SMart PC 500T
Blackberry playbook
Nexus 7 2nd gen
Ipad 3 64gb wifi cellular
ipad mini 32gb wifi cellular
Ipad Air 1st gen
Samsung Ativ Smart PC XE700
Microsoft Surface Pro 2 core i5
Microsoft surface Pro 3 core i5 128gb
Asus T300 Chi 128gb
Teclast X98 air 3G dual boot
HP elite X2 1011 G1
Out of the above few devices have been sold and bought twice like Tab2, Nexus 7 2nd gen and iPad 3.
Then i will tell you that i didnt buy it at the MRP suggested by the company, i bought it for 40K INR, if you buy it for the suggested price of 90K then it will absolutely kill the purpose of this review. The recent prices are extremely cheap and i will drop few links below.i got it through a ebay india dealer who usually imports and sells at a reasonable prices in India.
Now the primary aim of a tablet is mobility and long battery life which is primary aim, apart from that my usage is focussed on reading pdf ebooks and scribbling over them so STYLUS SUPPORT IS MUST FOR ME. If you see the above list of devices i used then you will come to know that i used all sorts of styluses from passive wacom ones in SURAFCE PRO 2 and NOTE series phones, to active N TRIG one on SURFACE PRO 3 to SYNAPTICS stylus on ASUS T300 Chi.
Active styluses are better as proposed by most digital artists and i do agree, the wacom passive ones are not enough accurate towards the edge of the screens but after using them all i can tell you i am inclined towards the passive ones with good pressure sensitivity
no need of idiotic AAAA batteries which are damn costly and not widely available either
if your stylus has more tech inside the more chance of defects as happened with me!! The synaptics stylus was particularly irritating and the N trig stylus drained batteries
So in my usage case of writing notes i prefer WACOM PASSIVE STYLUS, obviously your mileage may vary depending on your usage pattern or priority.
Comparative Specs post mortem:
STORAGE:
If you want a big storage space and a tablet it will cost you loads of money, just think of the prices of ipads with bigger storages. Mine has 256 gb SSD and a very fast one too.
CELLULAR SUPPORT:
Now this also is an extremely important aspect for a tablet and if someone avoids one then the reason is mostly INDOOR usage scenario or Less frequent travelling and presence of wifi hotspots in your destinations but round the clock data acccess is a very essential part of a tablet.
Here you will see various companies charging exorbitantly for a cellular modem. Mine comes with 3G modem built in and works nicely though non 3G versions do exist.
BUILD QUALITY:
Now this is a very interesting aspect that i need to tell you, why the hell do you think i changed devices like surface pro 3 and Asus T300 chi? both are sexy as anything and extremely feature rich.....
Answer to above is both the tablets screens cracked on slightest impact as i couldnt get a case for both in india at that point of time so it cost me a lot of money for using SEXY devices so i decided no more again. The pro 3 was just kept from few inches from the ground while inside the backpack and T300 chi screen broke when a friend by mistake applied some torsion on the tablet while still connected to the keyboards.
HERE comes the HP ELITE X2 1011 with military grade build quality and mlg specifications and i have peace of mind while i carry these in my back pack with a minor padding. ITS NOT A GIMMICK AS ITS BUILT TO LAST
SCREEN QUALITY:
From the onset i will tell you the first negative of this tablet SCREEN LOOKS WASHED as it doesnt have the same colour gamut of the ipad or galaxy tab s2 etc.
This i corrected using intel graphics software thats there in windows side of this tablet
Now did i just say windows side of the tablet???? OMG somethings wrong with me, this one just comes with Windows Professional out of the box right? ok may be i am cranky right now.
TEXT INPUT MODES:
Now i see most people wanting to buy a aftermarket keyboard for using with their tablets but the original manufacturer only meant them to be TOUCH ONLY devices for media consumption and not for DOING ANY "REAL WORK"(oops this line is so cliche right now among various OS fanboys)
So how does my Tablet fare here? it comes with a POWER KEYBOARD with a awesome keyboard
has 2 USB ports
AUDIO out 3.5mm port
Smart card reader( immaterial to me)
Finger print scanner that is as good as in laptop worlds though old swiping tech and not just Touch tech as introduced in iphone onwards and now ubiquitious
Mini display port
Extra battery though a bit smaller than the one inside the tablet( i am intentionally leaving out the specs part not to make it too technical as its just a user point of view) this extra battery almost gives me half the battery life that the tablet battery gives
So i think its an awesome accessory to have and was included in my deal, remember ASUS T300 Chi keyboard was bluetooth one so unusable inside BIOS settings and you just have to pray that the display touch never stops working else forget about BIOS tinkering(though i somehow managed to buy a extra usb keyboard and used the micro usb port to change few settings but it was irritating as my tablet crashed and i had to run to market to buy a KB to do a clean windows install)
PROCESSING POWER:
My model comes with Core M 5y71 with 8gb ram and 256 gb HDD. few years back i was of the notion of buying the fastest and the best thinking thats the thing i should have and i will keep that thing for more than a year but i found benchmarks and reviews showing benchmarks are for nerdgasm and only cater to fanboy fanaticism.
I never had used my gadgets to proper or maximal use as i was constantly worried about battery dying on me. I realised in due course that any portable gadgets achilees heel will be its battery. So my gadget buying decisions are always oriented to battery life than absolute best performance. I have reduced my GAS (GEAR ACQUISITION SYNDROME) after i used a hell lot of GAS
Anyways the processor is more than adequate in everyday tasks and portability in mind. This is no surface book...
OS:
I had this TAblet since almost 5 months but why am i reviewing it now?
Ok, it came with Windows 8 Professional and immediately i upgraded it to Windows 10. I was a part of the INSIDER PROGRAM and used to keep my tablet in the Fast or slow ring depending on my wifi speeds
I used to use all desktop apps and many apps from the Windows Store, but something within me was always itching to ditch windows and go for some OS with more apps even though am not a avid user of any specific apps but that feeling of extremely few apps when you are browsing the store used to irritate me.
I then looked into Bluestacks player....... Bull **** on this processor cpu/gpu with stutters as its demanding app and runs within windows
Then came AMIDUOS much better than Bluestacks for this processor and usable for all apps but fluidity was missing and games were still a no go
Tried few times to get Android X86 to work but the enterprise security that comes with this tablet didnt like the install and i couldnt go ahead in selecting the usb drive
Then similar situation with Remix OS 2.0 failed
So days just passed by and then i saw Remix OS 3.0 marshmallow variant being introduced and reluctantly i downloaded it. The file now comes with its own installer, i double clicked it and accepted next and voila, bootloader got installed and a single restart took me to OS selection screen..... WOWWWWW
Remix os on tablets simply rocks and the Android OS simply flies on this hardware with 8GB ram and processor
all games open instantly and its just like native android OS here, everything just works except wacom pen digitizer in android environment(i can live with that )
there are some cons to this tablet cum pc too will list them some other time for now sayonara.......
Sounds very interesting. Was the installation straightforward?
i just try remix os on hp elite x2.it works well so far
