NFC on AT&T Galaxy S II??????????? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just picked up this phone that was released today by AT&T.
Only reason to spend the money was to get the NFC feature.
I see that the battery has NFC on it, but
1. How do I enable the phone to use it?
2. How do I set it up?
TIA

ask the ATT galaxy section

The phone is NFC ready but it's not being implemented at this time. From what I read somewhere At&t is still waiting to finalize some agreements. In my opinion they might push an update to the phone to "activate" the NFC.

I'm confused, can anyone clear this up?

Does NFC exist on UK's SGS2s as of now? I mean if I go to any shop and buy SGS2, will I be guaranteed to have a NFC in it?
no, you will not be guaranteed to have NFC. Some handsets have it some do not it, you need check out the phone before you by it.

But, how do I check it if I'm buying it from online (Which I plan to). Also what I need to do to find out if phone has NFC upon receiving it?

Don't worry too much about it.
There is nothing to stop companies from sucking your money
You are going to get NFC anyway.

I need NFC because I'm going to tweak it to make it a smart card for transport systems in future if possible. So, I've got no choice but to have NFC enabled phone.
Wow. Australia still uses paper tickets...
I've heard there are different variations of the SGS2 that have NFC but you'd have to do specific research on the device you were purchasing.
Also NFC is probably going to be available on on phones with an sd card slot based on upcoming technology...

[Q] Activate Overseas?

Hello everyone. New to the forums. Excited to now be a part this awesome community.
First off let me give you the back story. I am currently deployed in the Middle East in the AF. My vzw upgrade is available this up coming Friday and I plan on getting the Note 2. Although my account is currently frozen because of my deployment I only have one month left over here. My plan is to take the upgrade now, unfreeze my account, and have the phone sent to me. This way I have a month to play with the device before I get back home. If I wait until I get home I won't be able to put it down and my wife will strangle me! lol
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not it is possible to activate your Verizon phone outside of the US? I know you can start the process online but then you have to dial a *#### number. Does anyone have experience with this or know if this will work overseas? If not, do you know how long you have to activate the device? The time difference and my work schedule makes it difficult for me to get a hold of Verizon so I thought I would ask on here.
Any insight/experience would be greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get this beast of a phone!
Don't quote me on this. But I think you can, you will just have to add an international calling plan. Again do not quote me I could be wrong but that may be your only option to be able to use it

Thanks man. I was finally able to call vzw today and they said the same thing. Note 2 has been ordered! I cannot wait!
Note 2 arrived two days ago...man this thing is a BEAST!
On another note I just want to put this here that I actually could not activate it overseas. It turns out you have to be on the verizon network first to activate and set up GSM capabilities...kind of strange but its all good. I am not getting stuck with any fees or anything like that because I accepted the terms of the new contrat over the phone. Another thing that sucks is you cant take any OTA updates via wifi-only. Ill have to wait three more weeks...oh well this thing will keep me busy until then.

[Q] Did anyone buy the vz developer s4? Did ya'll get it yet?

Hello everyone!
I'll get this out of the way now, I'm a noob and I'm finally bursting the cherry of posting on here even though I've referenced this site for several years now for different phones, roms and rooting. In other words, please be patient with me if this post is somewhere else and I missed it.
Anyways, as the post topic asks, did anyone order the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 developer edition? If so, did you guys get it? What do you all think of it?
I thankfully ordered mine at 6:30 pm the day it came out before it went on back order, so either samsung wasn't planning on so many ordering and didn't make many or its a really popular phone. I'm waiting on the UPS guy to show up here with my phone today and I'm getting antsy.
Ordering from samsung and checking on its status yesterday was a nightmare because so many departments couldn't find my order number and I almost told them to cancel the order. Glad I didn't.
Does anyone know if you can take it to the store and get insurance on it or where to get mobile insurance on it? This is the first time I ever bought off of contract and do not want to waste my $715.49 investment should something happen to it. (Mom of a 9 month old, anything can and will happen.)
Thanks for the help and happy experiences with the new phones!
I don't think the Google Edition S4 will work on Verizon. Like other Google phones, it's GSM unlocked but I don't believe it has the proper bands to function on Verizon. You may want to research and/or possibly cancel your oder if you plan to use it on a CDMA network.
That said, anyone get a dump of the rom yet? I'm sure it's just a matter of time before someone ports it for our phones (assuming partitions are the same - they should be).

Huh? I didn't buy a google edition S4, I bought the developer version. It will work fo verizon.
My mistake. The GE S4 and One became available on the Play Store yesterday. I thought you were talking about that. Which another thread in this forum raises some interest that the GE may work on Verizon.
Sorry for the thread de-rail.

Would have bought if 32gb.
I ordered one yesterday. My DROID bionic has been flailing, and I want to keep unlimited data. I can't wait to start playing with it! This will be my first foray into playing with ROMs and such.
P.S. 64GB microSD cards are like half off on amazon, at least they were yesterday. Got one of those too since only comes with 16GB :/
Make sure you give the dev's the AOSP rom from it so that we can get the IR remote working on AOSP builds... SO [email protected]!!!
Wait, it doesn't come with touchwiz right?
I read it does come with TouchWiz on droid-life, just not all the verizon crap. I guess I'll find out Monday when it's supposed to show up.

Hey no problem, so many phones going out at once, its easy to get confused.
Now all I need is that darn UPS guy here already and I'll let ya'll know what it does/doesn't have on it if someone doesn't beat me to it. And I still wish they would have done it as a 32 gig version, but I don't see that coming... at least to verizon anyways.
Mine is in transit; should be here Monday. From what I understand, it does come with VZ bloatware but once rooted, you can ROM away.
and iewctal
So update here.
I just got the device, getting verizon to activate it was a pain because several techs kept saying "they don't support a developer device" but I finally got it taken care of.
Yes it has bloatware, will be taking care of that.
Also is not rooted, will be looking up ways to do that now to make sure I do this right.
Too bad there isn't a one click root for this thing, I'd really like to save some time than fighting doing it on a mac.

Thanks for the update and the warning about VZW and lack of knowledge. It amazes me this info is not flowed down to the carrier's support team, especially when it is made for that carrier and it was announced over a month ago.

Hey no problem, I actually got one tech now going to put herself on the waitlist to get one because she didn't know it existed. I'm hoping that after the hour I spent on the phone they now know that its out there and to be ready. The phone does not come with a SIM card so if you can pick up a card early and have it ready it may save some driving time/hassle.
Does anyone know of a simple and fast root method that works? I'm curious to see how it works with an unlocked bootloader and very surprised that it didn't already have root access. Maybe that's the noob talking here, but I was hopeful.

I don't know what size that card is. I had a samsung droid charge (horrible phone) and its card didn't fit in it. It needs a micro SIM. If you have time before yours comes in, I'd be safe and just get one free from verizon.
Oh one other thing I forgot, you can add insurance from verizon to protect your device. They will cover it!

Nexus 9 on Verizon

I know it has the radios, but has anyone been able to activate it on Verizon? They couldn't do it for me directly, so we tried activating a different tablet, cutting down the SIM, and sticking it into the 9. No dice...the cut SIM works fine in my Droid Maxx so I know it's not the the cut SIM, and the number shows up in my "about tablet" so the sim is being recognized, but there's no service.
Anyone have any luck yet and/or suggestions?

I sell Verizon, had my first customers come in with these tablets and tried the same thing (activated the SIM in an iPad). SIM in the Nexus will read the IMEI, but it shows NO network signal. On the phone with tier two tech support right now. Will report back when I have an answer!

this thread is of great interest to me. Since this will really determine if I get a N9 LTE.
Also find the troubles interesting since a simple sim card swap worked with the N7 and is currently working with the N6.
I know Verizon won't do anything officially but doesn't stop us from getting our 6's running.

btw opened a case with google see if they know anything with verizon.
Looking into your account, I saw that you had contact support previously today (Case: 9-41030000*****) in regards to being unable to activate your Nexus 9 LTE tablet with Verizon. I wanted to let you know that your case has been escalated to the next tier of support and is currently being reviewed. You can expect a reply by email from either the previous agent or the Specialist who has reviewed your case, within the next 1 - 2 business days.
Thanks,

Actually didn't go to Walmart trying to use the Sim card which came from my nexus 6
And connected. 30$ is spent.. I guess I'll get to test them again.. But at home just like when I left them getting 2g
Glad I sparked interest in this...I'm confident now I'll get this figured out one way or the other now that xda members are on it lol.
FYI, someone just mentioned it seems like their radio state is off. I noticed this too...i installed the 4G switcher app just to see if I could get more info from it, and it defaults that the radio state is off.
I did get it to seem to turn on once or twice but it didn't actually do anything.
I'm just hoping this isn't something stupid where verizon has decided not to sell the nexus 9 so they are blocking it from their network.
I used this app to dial *#*#4636#*#* to access the radio when it was off. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.modoohut.dialer

Figured I'd try to chat with someone from Google...they don't know of any reason why the device shouldn't work on Verizon. Here's the transcript - http://pastebin.com/ZuhwvnAY

Yea the 4G switcher app gives the exact same info, and same thing showed when I tried what you did...seems like the radio is turned off, and it won't turn on.
My first thought is maybe google has the devices deactivating the radio when it detects Verizon but then they would have done the same with the 6 one would think.

Well the Google Play support guy says there's nothing on their end that he's aware of for why it wouldn't work on Verizon...I wouldn't see Google doing that, but I COULD see Verizon doing it haha.
One thing I am holding onto is that I ordered this the day it went on sale on the Play Store, so its just possible Verizon hasn't done something it needs to do to allow the connection. Its all conjecture for now though lol.

Unlocked Galaxy S9 Question

Hello guys,
I did see 5hat the Galaxy s9 plus is cheaper through Samsung or through Best Buy Friday. The phone that is cheaper is the unlocked version that works with any carrier including Verizon which I get. My question is will the unlocked version work with, or have a way to download Verizon Visual Voicemail, and will it work? Appreciate the feedback.

To piggy back off of this question (since I am in similar boat with AT&T) - Is it possible to flash the phone with the carrier version after purchasing unlocked version? Unfortunately, WiFi calling is a must where I live.
Thanks
I'm also in the same situation with Verizon. I want to get the unlocked version, but will everything work just like the verizon branded device? Also does anyone know if the Samsung trade in offer will work with a Verizon phone that's on payment plan?
Also wondering if sideloading the app will work for this purpose.

I don't see why they shouldn't take it. I've sold phones on Verizon payment plan and haven't had any problems. The carriers only care that you continue to make payments and fire that they bill you monthly.

Yes I just finished reading the fine print in Samsung's trade in offer. So the only phones they will not accept as trade ins are leased phones.
Just went through this at Best Buy on Friday, also.
Was strongly considering the unlocked S9+ and porting it to the VZW network. I inquired with the blue-shirt if there would be any loss of functionality should I make such a choice. The answer was "no".
The Samsung representative was in attendance, so I put the question to him as well. After glazing over while he went into an analogy of how your IMEI and SIM card are like licensing a car - and how they all can drive on the same road - I directed him back to the issue at hand, and his response was "no difference".
Then I called VZW, waited for the obligatory 15 minutes on hold, and asked the representative the same question. The answer was "No. None. Exactly the same."
Did a few searches on the feature I was specifically concerned about - that being Wi-Fi calling - and it appeared, from an historical perspective, there would be the potential for that functionality to be absent unless one purchased the branded device.
The VZW store was across the street, so I brought my question to them. In an experience that is as unique as it was surprising, I was lucky enough to get a salesperson who genuinely seemed to want to know the definitive answer as much as I did. He researched his on-line documentation for a few minutes before calling what he claimed to be their "network engineer".
The answer came back that VoLTE would work but Wi-Fi calling would not, on an unlocked S9+ ROM in the VZW network.
I've subsequently read contradicting indications but, considering the self-assigned importance of that capability, I decided not to chance it and find out the hard way that it would not work - should that be the case.
While this does not address your Visual Voice Mail concern, it does demonstrate exactly how many differing answers one can get from supposedly knowledgeable resources.
So, my solution was to lease the branded device with the understanding that I will need to deal with all of the pre-loaded stuff that I (or for that matter, just about anyone) do not need, want or use.
I have seen this questions asked hundreds of times, and I have seen both answers regarding WiFi calling. I know I have purchased unlocked phones right from Google in the past and never had an issue with any feature on VZW. I guess I will find out soon if anything has changed, as I ordered the 9+ unlocked from Samsung (they offered $100 more in a trade and a cheaper base price = no brainer). Will the confusion ever end?
Having had a unlocked s8+ and a Note 8 with VZ I can say VVM does not work. I've tried various applications and am not a fan of using google voice so I reached out and had standard messaging applied to my account and basic VVM removed. I'll get a notification but have to call in to check my voicemail which is no biggie. Never tried wifi calling but HD Voice does work ok. I preordered an unlocked S9+ so I'm sure it'll be the same boat
Verizon had the demo for the s9 plus in their store today, and the model of the phone is IDENTICAL to the unlocked US model. Also kinda wishing I'd stuck to the purple one I'd ordered by accident and cancelled, as it looks amazing in person.

With the S7, you could flash the any of the carrier or unlocked firmware on the phone. This would give you access to verizon VVM, WiFI calling, etc if you flashed that firmware. I heard the S8 was the same since the hardware in them are the same between carriers. Here's to hoping that the S9 is the same.

This is true. If you want wifi calling (which I do), you need an AT&T phone. You can't flash anything on the phone to make it work. A few extra AT&T apps is not a big deal on a phone like this to get the features they provide. If you pay for their service you should get all the benefits but that's not how it is for now.

And that is very unfortunate. I am hoping that one day they will open up WiFi Calling to non carrier phones - but I doubt it will happen any time soon if at all.
Is it the same for tmobile?
Just got off the phone with a Tier 2 Tech Coach with VZW and they said that they can only "guarantee the VZW branded phones will work with their features." I specifically asked about VVM and WiFi calling. They suggested I stick to the VZW branded model. I explained that their model was virtually $100 more than the unlocked version from Samsung and I wasn't sure why that was on "basically the same phone." She was kind and courteous, but certainly it's another way for Big Red to make more money.

GS8 Unlocked worked with both VoLTE and Wifi Calling on TMO so there is no reason for the GS9+ unlocked not to support these features.

Problem with VZW is support for integrated video calling thru the phone app which is different from the Samsung default. On VZW the unlocked USA version will support VoLTE but not WIfi Calling, VVM, Video Calling.
my 2 cents.

She was kind and courteous, but certainly it's another way for Big Red to make more money.

They're wrong. I tested a Verizon model in stores, and it's literally the exact same model number as the unlocked one I've got on order from Samsung. But of course they want you to buy the Verizon one, the mark up in the price is pure profit for them, and they probably get a commission for selling it to you.

Just got off the phone with a Tier 2 Tech Coach with VZW and they said that they can only "guarantee the VZW branded phones will work with their features." Don't forget their useless $30+ "activation fee" they charge when you buy a device through them. I shouldn't have to pay $30 to take the SIM out of my old phone and put it in my new phone. I'm going with the unlocked version because I'm considering switching to T-Mobile due to all this type of crap Verizon pulls.

Yes I just finished reading the fine print in Samsung's trade in offer. So the only phones they will not accept as trade ins are leased phones.

So I'm curious what happens if you have a leased phone. Do they just not accept it and then charge your card for what you weren't charged at time of checkout?
