I am new to SG-A and Android itself. As far as i can say from using this phone for one month now is:
- It is fast (i don't play games)
- It is practical
- It is just VERY NICE
BUT, there are some negative aspects also:
- Battery runs out very fast (1 - 1,5 days) - WLAN/BT/GPS/GP3/2 are switched on manually only when needed.
- Low internal memory (278 MB)?
So, what do i want to do next?
- I would like to improve Battery life duration, and i hear that other ROMs do safe battery life duration.
- I would like to delete all the Samsung Apps and stuff from the phone
Note: I have tried out an app called "juice defender", but i am far from enthusiastic about it - it switches on and off the 3G network automatically what is very practical, but hangs itself up occasionally.
What have i learned on xda-developers.com yet?
- There are instructions on how to root your mobile, to have admin-privileges
- There are instructions on how to update firmware
- There are different ROM's you can use (like Cyanogen and GingerReal)
And - that there is no BEST ROM, only different ROMs for differents tastes.
What would i like to know from you now?
- Is it for real that other ROMs enhance battery life? (more than like 100%?)
- Would you agree to kick out all Samsung apps? Also to free up some internal memory.
- What ROM would you recommend me? As mentioned, i don't play games. I just need a practical and fast operating system on my phone. I make phone calls, write sms, and occasionally look up information on the Internet Browser. And i would like to enhance battery life somehow.
That Cyanogen ROM sounds promising, but ain't ready to use yet?
Others wrote that the GingerReal ROM is the most used one here for SG-A, so can't be a big mistake to give it a try?

Yup. Gingerreal is the most stable. Cyanogenmod roms are still beta so for a new user you may wanna explorer stock based roms and mess with Odin and clockworkmod before going into beta roms. Of course, it's personal preference.
Everything is pretty simple. For Gingerreal, just get a 2.3 update, then get clockworkmod, then flash the rom. Follow instructions in the development threads to the letter, you'll be safe and happy.
I have been using the official 2.3.4 rom with CF-Root, and Link2SD to account for the lack of space, and it works amazingly fast.

hi, i want to give a try to Gingerreal (i am stuck on KPH), can someone explain me (i'm a newby):
- how to install CWM (the link in the official post is broken)
- if i need to root the device first
- if i need to partition the sd in ext4 before flashing the rom (and how do it)
- if i need to wipe data before flashing the rom

In the GingerReal thread there is a link to another thread which has the clockworkmod recovery. download it, power off, boot into stock recovery by holding home while powering up, then install the zip you downloaded. You get clockworkmod then.
You don't need root. After clockworkmod, download the GingerReal zip and install from sd card.
If you wanna use darktremor app2sd then partition your sd card. Google for that.

The point is to have GingerBread bootloader~ it's tested on that firmware so its good if you flash it~ just to avoid problems~

No don't flash it while on an another firmware,flash the firmware to the version stated or you might end up with a bricked galaxy ace.As stated it has been tested on those firmwares and its safe..

Hi, I am not really now to Android (have been using my Galaxy S2 from Bell for almost three months now). But have just gotten the chance to actually really look into rooting and hence, decided to root and flash my phone with Lite'ning 6.1 ROM.
What I am confused is that, while researching through the forums. I stumbled across many Custom ROMs such as Villain, Lite'ning, etc. What I am currently confused about is regarding Cyanogenmod 7. Is it a custom ROM like Lite'ning and all? or is it like a platform on which these ROMs such as Lite'ning are made on?
Furthermore, while browsing through Market, I found these ICS Theme but they mentioned that CM7 is required and the theme is applied through Theme Chooser App. So I just want to know if I'll be able to run it on my Lite'ning.
Lastly, if someone could be kind enough to post a link or teach me showing on how would I be able to flash back to my stock ROM (already downloaded it), I would greatly appreciate. I have read through the forum and is still confused.

I assume you used Odin to flash lightening rom. Same process with stock. Can't post links yet, but look up Intratechs post on official roms. Great guide in there.

Litening and VillainRom are based off of Samsung's stock roms, meaning Touchwiz and everything Samsung originally included on the phone.
CyanogenMod7 and MIUI are based on AOSP, which is the android open source project. The roms are built from scratch essentially, from original sources given by Google. Any themes or mods that say they require CM7, will require CM7 to be flashed.
CM7 has special features as detailed on http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about/features, whereas Samsung-based roms have their own features like more codecs to play videos, a better camera app, built in screenshot utility, etc. Each has their advantages and disadvantages, so its more preference than anything. CM7 will be cutting-edge, but consequently have more bugs, while Samsung roms are generally the opposite (older but more stable).

Thanks so much for your reply, certainly helped me alot. If you dont mind I have another question. I came across SiyahKernel thing on the board and is confused as to what it actually is. Is is a custom ROM like Lite'ning? or something different. I am asking this because I saw a video on youtube of a demonstration of Galaxy S2 Running Cyanogenmod7 + siyahkernel.
The kernel is something different. Every rom needs a kernel to run. It handles low level stuff.

For my last clarification.
After I flashed 6.1 Lite'ning Rom on my phone I could see Superuser coming with it. But when i was reading through SiyahKernel I noticed that we need the program called CWM (is ROM Mananger on Market the same thing?) to flash the kernel onto the phone.
So based on my understanding, I just need to download SiyahKernel onto my SD Memory and choose 'Install ROM from SD Card' and select SiyahKernel and that's all right?

When they refer to flashing .zips from CWM, they mean ClockWorkMod Recovery. That's usually a recovery system packaged with the kernel, accessible by holding [up volume] + [home button] + [power button] when the phone is off. Then, there will be an option that says 'install zip from sd card.'
In your scenario, I'm not sure whether you have CWM Recovery, but its not necessarily needed. As you can see on the download site (www.gokhanmoral.com), there are links to both TAR and ZIP files.
Download the TAR file and flash it in the PDA section using Odin, the same way you flashed Litening Rom. Simple as that. After that when you try going into recovery mode, you'll see CWM Recovery with tons more options.
Specifically, the main benefit of CWM Recovery is that you can backup your entire phone, which you should do immediately. If anything goes wrong in the future while flashing a new ROM, you can always turn the phone off, restart in recovery mode, and restore that backup (restores the phone exactly to the same point you were at when you did the backup, but doesn't back up the external sd card which shouldn't have been affected anyway). It makes trying new ROMs entirely safe and painless.

Not true. I have used GenericGinger for 3 months with maybe 2 crashes total. It's quite stable and fast, and the UI is much better than that one (of course, I use Go Launcher with any ROM), especially because it has an ICS theme (although it says beta, I've had no issues).

ive tried to flash eyrigit rom's 3.5 version but evrytime i flash it the wifi doesnt work? when i turn on the wifi it just says error?
What rom has 100% working functions?

I completely agree. I've been testing this rom for a couple weeks and everything works like the stock rom did, if not better. It has awesome features. GenericGinger is also perfectly stable with the ice cream theme and has other features but not as much.
As soon as someone helps to fix the ice cream kernel I'm sure we will have allot more stable roms to choose from.

It comes with the kernel. Since you are using entropys kernel im guessing you are from the US meaning your stock is 2.3.x meaning the kernel is the correct format for the rom anyway so if for some strange reason it does not come with the kernel then you will be safe from brick in theory. And you can put entropys kernel on afterwards. You can check to see if it is there by going into cwm and if it isn't there then your on stock kernel (unless you all ready have another kernel on already)
But I am pretty sure that it comes with the kernel in.

I am from the US with stock SGP5 Model YPG70CWYXXA and I dread the chance of bricking, so I'm doing lots of homework by looking at and trying to understand various postings here.
KIES is working on my Windows PC, so my plan is to root via SuperOneClick and install Eryigit's latest tar file via the latest version of Odin. I read in the install instructions that you are supposed to:
(in Clockwork recovery mod : wipe cache partition ---> OK; Wipe data/factory reset --> OK;
advanced - wipe dalvik cache --> OK; after that install new rom , You must do it , clean installation.)
The stock version does not have Clockwork recovery mod, so do I need to do the Odin install twice? e.g. The 1st install to GET the Clockwork recovery mod feature, then go into Clockwork recovery mod to do the above "wiping", and then repeat the install via Odin again ??
Actually, once you've got Entropy's recovery mod installed, you can just use that to install other roms. Just copy the new rom file over (in a .zip) to your device, boot into recovery mode, and choose the right options. (It's fairly intuitive)
You say you dread the chance of bricking your device; if you're not prepared to accept and live with the possibility of doing so, perhaps terminally, then I suggest you not do it.
What, exactly, do you hope to gain by rooting and flashing a different ROM? Does the stock ROM lack some specific functionality that you want/need, or is it only for experimental purposes?
If you're just looking to gain the experience, then that's a perfectly valid reason to explore the flexibility of Android, but you must be careful in what you do, and realize the consequences of error.
Just do a backup in recovery before you flash..i did not now anything before i flash it and i brick it but people here help me to unbrick it and since then i know how and i flash almost every rom from here for testing.

I bricked my first device months ago because I didn't have any experience flashing stuff, I made a mistake, but now I know better.
Don't be afraid, just try it, but be informed first, now there's a lot more information about anything related to this device.

Yeah I should of researched more I was stupid, when I tried flashing a from with Odin it would work, so I reset the device and then when it rebooted I came up with the picture with the phone and then dots connecting it to a computer and then that didn't work with Odin either, so I was stupid and let the battery run all the way out because I though it would fix it but no. It got hard bricked and it now doesn't turn on. Hope any of you never make the mistake I did, and now I'm trying out a USB jig because I know its charging so there is still chance, if that doesn't work then I will have to take off the back plate and remove the battery and I will go from there, but for now I'm awaiting for my USB jig to arrive, it sucks.....

About 8 months ago i got my Ace (first Android-phone) and since then have been waiting for cyanogenmod to be released for Ace. Now we have an Official RC3 and i wanted to try it. I rooted my phone some time ago and just installed CWM.
I know how to install a new mod/software but their are still some question left for me:
1.) If I install a complete new Software, why is a specific android version needed to install? (in case of CM7.2 its 2.3.X). What happens "behind the scenes" of an installation. It seems very different from installing a new OS on my desktop PC.
2.) This also results in the question, why do i have to roll back to a stock rom to flash a new rom? (most devs say "Stock rom X.X.X is needed")
3.) And this also results in the question, how do i install a new version of a mod?
For example: the nightlies for CM7.2 for ace. I read that i can just flash them over their predecessor, but a "clean" installation is recommended. Does that mean to flash a stock rom, and reflash a new nightly?
I hope that are not to much questions. They might be a bit redundant but i hope i could make my points

A Gingerbread 2.3.X baseband is required to flash any of the CM ROM and tweaks. You need to wipe data, cache and dalvik using CWM before installing a new ROM but you don't need to go to stock and reinstall everything. It is safe to flash another ROM after installing one...

3.For same type of ROM(same developer, same thread) just wipe cache and you're good to go or wipe data if bootloop occurs.
So my friend, just do the wipes correctly before installing new ROM and you have wrong info that you need to revert back to stock to install new ROM. ususally GB baseband is required. Nothing else
If the system partition is still formated, why is a (e.g.) 2.3 an installation requirement? OR it just this Baseband version on the phone that is important? AND is a mod also compatible with an already "moded" version from e.g. Vodafone? because this has another versionnumber (in my case S5830XWKP6).
It seems that i have a completely wrong imagination of the working principles of my phone. i always thought it might be like installing a new OS to my desktop.
I know that i have to wipe some things in order to install a rom (even though i also read a how-to post anywhere, that said it is unneccessary, but still doing it doesnt hurt.), nothing important on my phone what couldnt be backed up via USB (pictures, etc...)

because of bootloader/baseband. all custom rom is based on gingerbread, thus if u coming from froyo u need to flash with gingerbread stock rom first via odin to get the bootloader/baseband. but if u already on gingerbread theres no need to reflash stock rom. just wipe data, flash via clockworkmod recovery and u good to go.

I was asking why is it necesary to flash with Odin from CM9, 7.2 to stock ROM; isn't there other way ?
would it be possible to get back to stock by using KIES?
i know many people hate it due to high memory requirements (dont care. 4GB installed awaiting use!), but all it does is flashing official roms, right?

Kies won't recognize your phone foro flashing if it's on custom roms (or even stock roms from other regions).
Odin does practically the same process of Kies at a considerably lower memory cost.
Another method of going back to stock is if you have a cwm backup of a stock rom, but before restoring the backup you have to convert your file System to rfs. almost All (if not all) custom roms use ext4 file System cuz its faster (native to Linux).

Hello, at the start i wanted to install some new ICS rom for my Vibrant..i try to root it with one click and i couldn't do that coz i had froyo(2.2update)..so i read some forums and found solution in odin...i used that to turn back to stock eclair where i rooted the phone ...but the problem is that now i can't install any application on the device(i need ROM manager)..i get to android market and ,click on application but nothing is happening, no download at all...than i try to use android injection with apks that i found on the net , but nothing, i always get INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK...so now i am stuck i have: fimware version-2.1 update 1,baseband T959UVJFD, kernel 2.6.29 can you tall me should i do?? thx
Read the guide in my signature on how to install ICS ROMs. It has an update.zip that you can use for CWR.
ROM manager no longer supports 2.1 (Eclair), so that is why you can't see it in the market.
Download the clockwork mod recovery file (update.zip) and save it to the internal storage on the phone. Then reboot into recovery and install packages. Might have to do it twice. Then you'll be in CWM recovery. Install from from there.

i followed your guide...flashed CM7, than i try to flash Euphoria RM2.1(ICS) and flashing is starting all ok , than after 30 secs i see message 'Random offset 0x302' and it's not going forward with flashing,i pulled out battery and try 2 more times,and there is always the same problem, i'm on CM7 now(and i don't have google play what should i do? can you recoommand me some good and stable gingerbread ROM for Vibrant(if i goona be unable to install ICS Rom) thx

FWIW, and this is not a knock on Team Passion (they do excellent work but few updates), but Euphoria is somewhat outdated. There are plenty of ICS ROMs out there that are more up-to-date and when ICS went from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 there were significant code changes that were done. I suggest ICZen, or Slim or CM9.
But if you want to stay on Euphoria (AOKP based), this is from my guide:
If you get the RANDOM OFFSET error.
Don't freak out. This is an ICS security feature (as posted in Passion's FAQ post). All you have to do is pull your battery and boot back into recovery and reflash ICS over itself (just like you did with the initial CM7 bootloop) and it should push through. You may need to do this multiple times. I have read of people having to do it up to 5x. YMMV though.

man, now i am completly stack, i try to flash slim ics, found the file for vibrant, but it culdn't flash , in the middle it just stoped..and phone is just rebooting it self when i enter cw mod i can't install any other ROM from internal sd, it says no files found ffs now i can't even use phone, i need help emergently

I suggest you Odin immediately. I fear that the next screen you will see is the Encryption Unsuccessful screen. Make sure you hit repartition in Odin though since you reformatted your system from RFS/Ext4 to MTD when you went to CM7.

If you do get past all of these, but this is unlikely for a normal flash, get either Iczen or chimera.

I'm new here. I didn't root my S3 yet, but I want to do it and install new rom. But first I would need your help with Rom choosing, as I'm completely blind in this matter
The thing is, I would prefer a ROM which let me choose which application I want to install on my phone and which not - check/uncheck option. This rom should be FAST and stable.
As I have no experience at all, I would like to ask you which ROM will be the best for me? Btw, it would be great if I can choose language (Polish).

Hi, I am in the same boat. Stock standard international S3, but extremely slow. Ram usage on startup is 700mb.
Which rom would you guys suggest that is both stable (no bugs), and fast (using much less ram).
This is my everyday phone, I take a lot of photos, especially the camera should be functioning perfectly.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Edit: Last time I rooted and played around with these things were about 3-4 years ago with my Sony X10 mini. I am slowly getting back into it, reading up on the latest rooting apps etc.
@errolpl: Search in development subforum for 'aroma installer'. Usually these ROMs offer only system apps to choose. 3rd party user apps you'll have to install by your own. You can edit the header with edit-function.
@demozzracy: If you want full camera suport, I recommend NCS-ROM: based on last JB-firmware, but brilliant debloated. So slim, fast, battery friendly and all hardware working. I'm testing many LP-ROMs, but they are primarily newer, hardly better (for S3).

I was extremely new just a few weeks back as well. I must say that my attempts on finding a solution for my slow S3 has been a rather hard and bumpy road.
To help you save some time, here is what I've gathered so far:
Last time I flashed phone firmware, a couple of years ago, it required a PC, a cable and some funky software.
Then when I flashed my S3 for the first time, about a year ago, I started out with Cyanogenmod and used their app+cable installer. I think this is still the easiest way to root the phone, and get started with custom roms. Even if you plan to use some other rom than Cyanogenmod.
When the phone is rooted you can install TWRP, simply done via an app on the appstore. TWRP is recovery firmware that can stay on the phone, even though you flash new roms. (The phone is divided into several separate sections, bootloader, recovery, actual system, and data area.... I don't even know much about it yet.) The important part is that it is extremely easy to flash new roms using this tool, and a micro SD-card.
Simply drop the rom zip file onto the card and flash them. (For some roms you need to flash some "GAPPS" as well. These are the google apps, like the play store etc. If you don't flash them you can't really use the phone for much.)
This is where the real problems start. Finding the right ROM.
The S3 is old, and only supported up to Jelly Bean for my 1GB international version, or Kitkat if you have one of the 2gb versions.
This has not stopped developers in providing both Kitkat and Lollipop to any version of the S3. However... as eager they are to provide the newest coolest features, just as lazy do they seem to be with their testing. (Sorry guys, but someone has to say it.)
So I've gone through some roms now... none of them really good.
The first Official Cyanogenmod I flashed half a year ago. I used this for almost a year.. but the camera would crash constantly, and the phone was not able to display video. For example movieclips on facebook.
Second ROM: Cyanogenmod has also stopped developing for the S3, so a few weeks back I switched to some unofficial version. It seemed to work... camera and video was ok, and everything had the nice Lollipop feel to it.
However MMS did not work. I could receive one and send one, next ones would require a reboot for them to work. The problem was brought up in the ROM Q/A tread, but the answer from the developer was: Sorry I don't use MMS so I don't really see a problem.
Third: Onto some next rom. This one was tagged STABLE. It was far from it. In fact it was even easier to discover that this rom had the same MMS problem. Because the message app would crash immediately when trying to send one.
4th attemt was the same rom, but a different kernel... still the same problem.
5th rom was Blisspop... Wau, this was beautiful! Cool webpage, Cool animations.... it was just too bad that the site is dead, and that the rom can't even run for 24 hours without the android keyboard crashing 25 times or so. Also Blisspop has OTA updates... the only problem is that it constantly says that there is a new version for the S3.. but the download fails. Apparently some bad change to the website caused this, and apparently this problem has been going on for 3 months without anyone bothering to fix it.
6th was Archidroid. The second to top ROM for the S3. It looks cool, and has many features... but just as other Lollipop ROMs, sending MMS's without error is not one of them....
I've really tried everything. People always says that the MMS problems are due to APN's not being set up correctly, doing some reboots etc.... but trust me... I've set them up so many times you wouldn't belive it.
7th. After reading this thread and rp158's recommendation of NCS-ROM I'm now running that one. Without a single thing being set up, I was able to send and receive MMS's right away.
However... now I'm stuck back at the ugly kitkat look, and Touch wiz.
tl;dr;
So what do I want to say with all this?
Get root and TWRP and start playing around with ROMs
Lollipop does not look like an option for the S3, at least not right now
Don't let yourself be fooled by nice webpages or [STABLE]-tags, or comments that say: "I've been running this since yesterday.. it's 100% stable!"

As I said in my post, I am ok with the KitKat look, as long as it is stable, I am always on call at work, and cant afford constant phone crashes.
I am going to try the root/twrp to NCS rom in the next couple of days

It's 5 months already that im using S5 Sensation rom for i9300/9305 ( 4.4.4 kitkat). This rom has S5/Note4 features and works great im satisfied. No problems so far, no bugs, etc ^^
It comes with AROMA installer and lets you to choose which apps you want to install and which not.

Device must be rooted + newest cwm recovery installed. After that you just download custom rom, move it to ur phone memory/sdcard and flash it throught recovery mode

https://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager here is the latest CWM versions for smartphones, but its .img file and u cannt flash it directly from Odin. U need to make .img into .tar.md5 odin flash-able file by some tools, or flash it via adb shell, etc.

1. Install ClockworkMod(or PhilZ) recovery
2. Put ROM on your SD card
3. Enter recovery mode
4. Perform a full data wipe(except you're running previous versions of back-to-n00t)
5. Flash ROM
6. Flash SuperSU

perform a full data wipe means "Factory reset"?

yeah this means doing a "Factory reset", must be done throught Recovery mode, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache.
Put ROM on your SD card, then enter Recovery Mode by pressing Home + Volume UP + Power buttons and ull have smth like:
Install Zip -> Choose Zip from /Storage/Sdcard (External SDcard) , Search for ur ROM file and start flashing :X
Flash the SuperSu .zip file same way as flashing ROM.
