Pre-CMW root etc question - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

So I seem to like the SGS2 however I want to keep the door open to return it in case. If I understand correctly from the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285823 If I instal CMW on the SSG2 I will have a Yellow Triangle on power up. Is there a work around for this so I can return to stock? I want to root etc so I can make some mod's and look at the Custom ROM's.
TIA

Entropy's very handy return to stock method, which I just recently used and can verify works and DOES remove the yellow triangle, can be found here.

Have I damaged my phone trying to root?

Okay so I decided to root my s2 this evening and followed the instructions on another forum. (samsunggalaxysforums)
I managed to finish the Odin installation, and then moved onto SuperOneClick to root my phone.
Unfortunately, the SuperOneClick program froze completely on Step 6 (no idea why), and I was unable to continue. I could only pull out the USB cable and hope for the best.
Now I don't know how to explain this, but it seems like my s2 screen has changed colour slightly. It now has more of a 'warmer' tone to it. (and there is no option changed or selected in Display mode that can provide this look) I'm almost certain that it looks different. Could I have damaged the screen? Have I done any long-term damage to my phone? Is there any way I can find out?
Also when I now reboot, I see a yellow warning triangle on start-up.
Basically, is there anyway I can go back? I don't think this rooting business is for me, and I was extremely worried when the SuperOneClick program froze.
Whatever I have done in Odin, can I reverse?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I am not technical on phones, so please go easy)
EDIT - Err, nevermind. I re-flashed the Stock Kernel and it seems the screen tone has returned and the yellow warning triangle has disappeared. I am still on the edge on whether to try this again, as I do not wish to do damage to my phone. Has anyone else had SuperOneClick freeze during the root process? And can this seriously damage your phone?
The best way to get get root and cwm is to flash chainfire kernel via odin. Btw you can also flash litening rom via odin also has root and cwm. It's very easy and comfortable. Before you do this at all I would
Flash the latest stock firmware first.
Ps: later you can try leomarrom, for me personally the best one at the moment.

CWM and root as said above makes more sense than from another forum who look to have posted an obsolete method .
Root + CWM .

Some questions about this phone

Okay so I checked it out and it looks easy to root this phone but I want to put clockworkmod on the phone so that I can make custom backups. I am a little confused it looks like this phone has a download mode where I can do my flashing without CWM is that correct? If I understand right I have to download or flash a custom kernel with temp root permissions in order to install CWM, then from there I can use superoneclick to root permanantly. So then do I go back to the original kernel or a custom one if I like? Do I need CWM to install custom ROMS or can I just use this download mode? I am sorry for all the questions this is only my second samart phone actually third but I dont really count the Blackberry curve 2g. I never rooted my g2x till after it got its gingerbread update so I never used superoneclick I just had to use nvflash to install CWM then flash a custom ROM so this is a little different to me. I see there is alot of dev stuff for this phone and I cant wait to get started but I want to make sure I do it right. I saw a few other methods for root but since I want cwm anyway I figure just use superoneclick. Also if I hold vol down+home+power then my phone will do a factory reset right? unless I install CWM then it will boot into cwm right? Sorry to ask all these questions I just need alittle bit more info before I start I am very nosy and I like to understand fully what I am doing and how it works. so anyone with any helpful advice on this phone please chime in I would like to know all the tips tricks and shorcuts that this phone has. Thanks in advance and again it is nice to join a new fourm.

Tl;dr; there's a Q&A thread with your answers.
Have a look for cf-root, its got everything you need and easy to follow instructions
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
As per seanicca above, you need CF root which is both rooting and CWM in one flash (using Odin).
Look at the xda bookmarks in my sig for a link and just read the instructions in the thread. It's a couple of minutes and it's done.
So what is this flash counter I keep reading about? Samsung actually put a counter in the phone to see how much flashing goes on? I still cant belive this phone has its own flash mode basically. I dont know that much about phones maybe that is a normal feature but I dont think so.

You're right - it's not a normal feature. I've never had it on a phone before the S2, but I'm sure it must have been around before. I've heard of some suppliers refusing to repair or replace phones that have a flash count on them, but I've also heard of an equal amount that don't care and ignore or don't know about it.
As you'll see all over the place on this forum there's 2 ways to get rid of it. 1 reflash a stock kernel, or 2 use a usb jig. I've gone down the 2nd route as it was only a few quid and is just quick and easy.

[q] root job gone bad need help

I obviously don't know what I'm doing but hopefully on of you can help. Below is my current SGH-1777 in the "about phone" stats after I tried to root my phone. I didn't understand the root instructions very well (Ya stupid me) and temporarily bricked my phone because after the reboot I got the evil yellow triangle. I could see the options to chose from but none of them would respond.
So I reconnected my bricked phone to my PC and put the phone in download mode and reinstalled the stock kernel which I had saved earlier and the phone works normal again, but it looks like I still have the installs from the root first root attempt:
"about phone" Info
Android Vs 2.3.4
Base band Vs 1777UCKH7
Kernel Vs 2.6.35.7
Build number UCKH7
I was rooting my phone because I'm pis... off at Samsung and AT&T because part of the reason I bought this phone was for the NFC feature and wanted to use Google Wallet. I also read where rooting the phone improves battery life and get rid of all the bloatware AT&T stuck me with. In my software list I see where I have Superuser and the ROM manager still installed.
Do I need to start all over and how do I do that, or am I just missing a piece of the puzzle? I think one mistake I accidentally made was using the ODIN 1.82 instead of the 1.85 but when I try to PDA the 1.85 now the PDA screen flashes for a second and disappears.
Newbie needs help!
sounds like you rooted it correctly the first time. That yellow triangle doesnt mean you screwed it up. It just means you flashed a non-stock kernel and you tripped the counter. Thats all. Nothing to worry about there.
I dont think you can Google Wallet just yet from the i777. You can, however, remove bloat or better yet, just load a custom rom from one of the great devs.
If you see the superuser app, you're currently rooted. All this info is documented already in stickies.
The info in your About Phone screen is the same as stock out of the box. It would also look the same for stock rooted, and the same with custom roms based on stock. You can make these modifications without changing that info.
The I9100 boot screen with the yellow warning triangle is caused by flashing a non-stock kernel using Odin or Heimdall from a computer. That in itself does not mean the phone is soft bricked.
You can install a custom kernel with nfc support (Entropy512's latest daily driver), but it does not include support for Google Wallet. Support for Google Wallet is a fairly complex programming task that will be a long while appearing if ever.
Please read the guides linked in my signature. There is a lot of good information in there. If you still want to install custom software, a good way for a beginner is to follow the step by step guide.

NFC isn't the kernel - it's just a permissions XML and modified Settings.apk (on I777-based ROMs. Hellraised I9100 ROMs only need the permissions XML, which is included in Hellraiser)
I am pretty much with everyone else and think you are probably rooted. I would just download TB or Root Explorer from the market and see if Superuser allows you root to access either of these apps. Having Superuser on the phone would normally mean you are rooted but to make sure you can run one of the above programs to make sure you are allowed access.

[Q] Do I already have an insecure kernel installed?

Hey all, been a member for a while, but lost my account... have a quick question regarding my new Galaxy SII.
I bought the phone pre-owned, and am now considering rooting it. I have read about having to flash an insecure kernel, and that it adds a yellow triangle at the bottom of the boot screen. I already have this yellow triangle, but I know for a fact that my phone isn't rooted.
Is it possible that the previous owner had it rooted, but removed the root in order to sell it, without also reverting the insecure kernel?
Also, is there a way for me to tell if the yellow triangle is because of an insecure kernel, or perhaps something else?
Thanks in advance!
What details do you have in settings/about phone ?
Took a screenshot, hope this helps.
can't post external links because I'm a "new member".

Seems you're running a stock kernel now. Perhaps the previous owner did root the phone as you suggested, but didn't use a jig to reset the flash counter/reset Custom Binary in download mode to "Samsung Official".
what is your plan...
you want to make just stock look again unrooted?
or you will root it again?
just type here from about phone Kernel :
Alright, so it is still safe to install unstable kernel and root it as normal?
Yep. Go for it Use whatever root method you like.
CFRoot is pretty easy, but it it's up to you. Just make sure you read the whole first page of the thread thoroughly & make sure you understand the 10 or so steps fully. When reading the thread, pay particular attention to the bit "Help ! Which file do I use ?" & you should be fine.

[Q] i777 says I900 on startup

ever since i first rooted my s2 2 years ago it's booted up with the I900 on startup. i didn't pay any attention to it then cause i was new to flashing and rooting but i installed Resurrection Remix last night and tonight i'm trying out the Pacman Rom and i noticed its still there. I know i have the i777 at&t version for sure but was curious as to why the new roms aren't fixing the bootup. i don't think it's that big of an issue (or is it??) but yea. anyone know why?
Do you have the yellow triangle too? If so it's because you tripped the counter for installing custom roms. No big deal unless you need warranty which sounds like you'd be out of anyway.

yea i have the triangle and figured thats why it showed up. i just thought it curious that the model number would be wrong
ok i have another question and i didn't want to make a new thread..
on the pacman 4.3 rom when you go to lock screen settings it lets you choose "system icons" which i like wayy more than the default android icons. where are they stored on the phone? and how do i go about placing them in an easily accessible folder so i can change up my icons other than the lockscreen ones

You might need to ask this in the pacrom thread (that's a cool feature!)
Re the I9100 logo, it is apparently because at&t was to lazy to make a separatescreen for the I777. Once you've tripped the counter, that's what you get. It bugged me a lot so I got rid of it. I'd have to re-search the threads addressing this (or you can if you care about it.

No it sounds like 2 years ago he used the old Zedomax method of rooting and used an i9100 kernel to do it. My counter is tripped and the ONLY time its ever said i9100 was because of Zedomaxs method which used modded i9100 firmware. Nada to do with ATT as far as i remember. Otherwise all of us custom rom users would still have that screen.

Could be. I thought that using Odin to install anything custom is what tripped the counter and that if you use mobile Odin or flash via cwm you don't trip it. However, I believe I may have installed a zedomax kernel to trip mine (I did it recently when attempting to return to stock - I forget exactly what I did.)
Anyway, I read that the triangle screen from tripping the counter always says I900 even on the I777. Mine did and it totally got on my nerves so I followed instructions to get rid of it. I couldn't use chainfires triangle away so I followed some more complicated instructions. I don't remember the link but I could probably find it - although anyone else probably can too.

This is correct. Actually, using Odin or Heimdall to install a non-stock kernel is exactly what trips the flash counter, and throws up the warning screen. Using Odin or Heimdall to install a "stock" kernel will also clear the warning screen, but it will not reset the flash counter. To reset the flash counter to zero, you either need to use a USB jig, or use Chainfire's app. The warning screen has nothing to do with whether the non-stock kernel is built for the I777 or the I9100, or whether it was a zedomax kernel. Any custom kernel will produce the exact same results.
