Hi I've bought myself the SGS2 (non-G version).
now, to root, do I use the method here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
and let's say i have rooted it using CF-root 5.2, do I just pick a ROM and start flashing them? Or do I proceed to flash a Custom Kernel first before the ROM?
Anyway, I noticed that there are 2 sections for the SGS2G and the SGS2 (non-G). Which ROMS do I select from and are the ROMS variant dependent? means if I have the non-G version, I cannot install a ROM from the SGS2 Original section? A little help please! So sorry for being a noob.
Yes follow those rooting instructions, after the phone is rooted download a rom and copy it to your phone then flash it via cmw or manually via recovery mode, reboot while holding power, home and volume up.
Personally I recommend bezke UltraIcs, using it without issue

1st thing you do: read, read, read.
You can use whatever root method you feel comfortable with. I've used CF-Root, Odia's insecure kernels, SuperOneClick, and flashing Siyah kernel. They all work fine.

Most ROMs come with their own kernels, so if you flash a custom kernel, then a ROM, then the kernel that came with the ROM will overwrite whatever custom kernel you flashed first.

What 2 sections do you mean? The Galaxy S II Original Android Development, and the Galaxy S II Android Development forums?
It's important to note that these are not G and non-G. Original means developed from the ground up. (think CyanogenMod) The non-original generally means derivative from another ROM - usually stock.
I9100G ROMs are scattered throughout the I9100 forums, because there is currently no separate forum for the I9100G. The post title for these ROMs should always note that they are for the I9100G instead of the I9100 though. As long as you follow my suggestion for 1st of all above, you should be fine.
If you have the i9100g choose the roms that clearly indicates i9100G only in title, otherwise it should work just fine for i9100. Roms in original development indicate roms built completely by the developer hence the original. The Android development roms are roms that could be based off of someone else' rom or similar. You can flash roms from either section.
Just make sure to properly flash them and never forget to make a backup.
Edit: ctomgee answered.

Thank you so much for the prompt reply! Finally I've got the answers to my questions! Btw, what ROM are you currently using? What I'm particularly concerned about is the custom Kernel that can help me optimize my battery.

Please be aware that though simbesh said he is using it without issues, ICS is NOT officially released. Some users have issues with ICS ROMs that others use with absolutely no problems.
As Kaze105 said, ALWAYS make sure you make a backup before you flash. (in case you need to go back)

I am on stock XXKI3, which is 2.3.5, with Siyah Kernel 2.6.4. There are newer firmwares, and newer versions of Siyah, but I feel no need to upgrade as of now. I've modded my firmware myself pretty heavily, and prefer to do all the tweaks myself. Helps me understand how my phone works better.
If you're interested in a kernel that will help with battery, look at SpeedMod, then maybe Siyah. SpeedMod users swear by their battery life. I use Siyah because it has more features, and has more customization. But it's a preference thing.

Yes, should be. Though be careful - flashing some kernels automatically installs certain versions of CWM. If your backup is made in a different version of CWM than what you are trying to restore from, it may not work.

seems pretty interesting the way you mod your phone! and by modding the phone yourself, you mean you take apart tweaks from different ROMs and install them in your phone? I hope im not imposing but do you mind sharing with me the tweaks that you have done to your stock rom? i might do the same if the ICS rom doesn't work the way i want it to.

The more involved mods I have are:
Phone.apk tweaked to have Noise Reduction off by default in phone calls
Battery icon with % in status bar
CRT-off animation on screen off
Rotation animation in UI
The first three involved decompiling the files involved, editing the files, and recompiling. The rotation animation involved downloading some files that another kind soul posted that were from the Galaxy Note and installing them on my phone in place of the files that were already there. All require root. You can find all of these in the forums with a search...
Wow. I just hit 500 posts. Crazy.

The first three I think are build dependent. Some people have tried different versions on other firmwares and had some success, but others, not so much.
The rotation animation one, I'm not sure about.
Hellraiser. Same as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335377 but for ICS. Same installation instructions, except this is for ICS Touchwiz firmwares instead of Gingerbread.
Known issues:
May break root on some firmwares. Flash ChainsDD's Superuser or Chainfire's SuperSU CWM packages in CWM to fix. To find them, Google it. Will add links later. tired now...
Doesn't change build.prop to represent I777, will cause script assert problems with CM9. I'll fix this later in the week after I've caught up on sleep.
Doesn't change wifi region codes (see Sh1tROM tutorial) for 5 GHz wifi support yet.
Sometimes region settings don't take hold on the first boot, and you need to reboot to see ringtones and proper keyboard
Tested with Foxhound someversionican't remember... Others have used other I9100 ICS firmwares.
Won't work with anything based on I9100 leaks such as XXLPJ - I believe Resurrection was in this category last week.

XXLP7 is ancient, it will not work on XXLP7. It will not work on any XX build below LPQ.
If you typoed that and meant XWLP7, it should work.
You need to be VERY careful to be accurate about region codes when talking about I9100 ICS, since they replaced the month code with "P" and how far along the build code is depends on the region. XX is way up there (past Q) and Q is the first one that could be Hellraised, XW is only at 7 and all known XW region builds should be fine.

Hellraised Crysis rom worked fine for me.
How are you supposed to use this...I have this as .zip and F1's Galaxy Nexus stock ROM for Galaxy S II on my AT&T Galaxy S II. When I install F1's Galaxy Nexus stock ROM, it ends because it recognizes my device isn't an OG Galaxy S II.
Am I supposed to merge the Hellraiser files with the ROM files and zip them up?
If you download and flash a stock ROM such as XWLP7 and hellraise, will HDMI work? Read on previous forum that HDMI out does not work on custom ROMs.
Since this is a stock ROM from Sammi this should work. Any experience with this?

You need to remove the script asserts from the updater-script of whatever you're trying to flash. That's probably the first firmware other than CM9 I've heard of that did any script assert checking.

Will this work with xwlpf? Wanted to HR the wanam rom. Just wanna be sure

At this point there is no touch recovery available for our phone for ICS. There was at least one release of siyah kernel for gingerbread that had touch recovery included. I don't see touch recovery being added relatively soon but it is a possibility for the future. If we end up getting a port of the siyah ICS kernel it will come with touch recovery.

Maybe you know something I don't but if that has something to with ROM Manager it is NOT good to be used on our phone. There is a reason why it says to not use ROM manager in the FAQ thread. There are 2 main kernels for our phone that are for gingerbread, Entropy's DD and Siyah kernel. Only the latest Siyah kernel had touch recovery. As for ICS there is Fenny's kernel which doesn't have touch, Entropy's kernel which also doesn't have touch, and the CM9 official kernel that does not have touch. ROM manager's recovery does not work with our phone since it is part of the kernel.

I went ahead and gave this a shot, and all seems to be working well. Right now I've tested it on both the CM9 Kernel (AOKP 4.0.4) and Entropy’s #202 (Ultimatum 2.0 Beta 3). Basically all you need to do is download this zip and boot into CWM, when you flash the zip it knows how to handle it and instantly reboots itself into the touch version. The interface is the same but I have to admit having touch instead of mashing buttons is pretty slick. I imagine the reference to the "not sticking" is because you're flashing other ROM's, which will already have a version of CWM injected (probably non-touch) and you'll have to go flash this over it.
Edit: I should note that you want to be careful doing this, because if you mess it up you no longer have a way to restore a backup or install a new zip until you start over by flashing from ODIN or the like.

For the home buttons to work, you need to flash a kernel designed for International devices because the rom comes with the kernel for USA devices. Flash Sultan-kernel-Venturi-r5b2-USB-OTG-INTL.zip from here (or any other INTL version) and your buttons will work

Hello all,
I tried to put omnirom on my galaxy s3 i9305, but I got status 7.
So I removed the lines (getprop...), but still didn't work.
Than I flashed Perseus kernel on it, because I thought that this will be necessary. I'm not sure if this is the fault, but now the touchscreen doesn't work anymore.
I installed Samsung stock rom but touchscreen still doesn't work.
In stock rom, isn't there also the kernel integrated?
Must I search now for Samsung original kernel?
And why I am not able to install omnirom, although one time it worked.
What version of TWRP do I need to install omnirom with android 4.4.2 and where do I get it from?
Thank you very much for your answers.

the problem I've seen the recovery or flash a kernel that is not the model of mobile. are you sure the kernel or the recovery was for your model?
Well,
I was wondering, too, why I get status 7 which means wrong model.
But in the back of the phone it says i9305, and I downloaded kernel and omnirom for the i9305.
Do I need a new kernel anyway?

Does that mean you have flashed firmware for I9300???
Any way you now need a paid for service repair .
No, I flashed for i9305.
But there are stock kernels in Internet available, can't I use one of them?

i've read a couple of days ago that a guy flashed a galaxy note 2 kernel on his i9300 and the same thing happened to him too. his touchscreen wasn't working although he flashed an original rom via odin. only the physical buttons were working. the note 2 kernel he flashed fried something on the mobo so he had to change his touchscreen.
you can download and flash an original rom (they have stock kernels built into them).
good luck
Yes usual is fried digitizer .
