-------------------------------------------------
[1] What is Rooting?
-----------------------------
Rooting your device means obtaining superuser rights and permissions to your Android software. With these elevated user privileges, you gain the ability to load custom software (ROM), install custom themes, increase performance, increase battery life, and the ability to install software that would otherwise cost extra money (ex: WiFi tethering). Rooting is essentially hacking your Android device. In the iPhone world, this would be the equivalent to Jailbreaking your phone.
-----------------------------
[2] How can I root my Galaxy S2?
-----------------------------
Yes. There are a few ways of obtaining root. All of which are listed HERE
-----------------------------
[3] What is CWM?
-----------------------------
Clockwork Mod(CWM) is a custom recovery for Android phones and tablets that allows you to perform several advanced recovery, restoration, installation and maintenance operations on your Android device that aren’t possible with the stock recovery.
**Recommended before flashing a new ROM**
-----------------------------
[4] What is a Nandroid Backup and how do I do it?
-----------------------------
A NANROID backup is basically a backup of your Android operating system from the phone’s NAND memory, saved to the storage card. It is RECOMMENDED to take a NAND backup of your phone before you attempt to flash a new ROM to it so that in case anything goes wrong, you can revert your phone back to its previously working state. HOW TO: A backup can be accomplished in CWM by simply selecting Backup and Restore from the Menu then selecting Backup. It will take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
-----------------------------
[5] How to I get into CWM?
-----------------------------
Pull the battery out of your phone to ensure it is completely off. Now hold down the Volume Up and Down buttons then hit the Power Button. Once you see the Galaxy S2 screen release the power button and Volume buttons.
-----------------------------
[6] How do I put my phone into Download mode so I can flash w/ Odin?
-----------------------------
Take out the battery from the back to ensure your phone is completely off, then put the battery back in. Now hold down on both the Up and Down Volume buttons and plug the USB coming from your PC into your SGS2. Once you see a warning screen let go of the volume buttons. Hit the Up Volume button to continue into download mode.
-----------------------------
[7] Drivers are not installing successfully or Odin is not recognizing my phone.
-----------------------------
The easiest way to install the drivers is to use Kies which can be downloaded below:
http://www.samsung.com/ca/kies/
-----------------------------
[8] I can't find Odin!
-----------------------------
http://megaupload.com/?d=M6CO8E1K
-----------------------------
[9] I've rooted now why do I have an exclamation point on my boot screen?
-----------------------------
Anytime you flash a non-stock kernel in download mode this will appear.

-----------------------------
[15] Where is the FM Radio like AT&T advertised?
-----------------------------
As of right now the current stock software released by AT&T does not support FM Radio. If there is actually FM hardware to support is not known yet.
-----------------------------
[16] What is the best ROM?
-----------------------------
There is no perfect ROM and which is the best depends on personal preference. Click below to get to a list of all custom roms kernels, etc...:

-----------------------------
[17] How can I take a screenshot of my phone?
-----------------------------
Hold down the home button and press the power buton.
-----------------------------
[18] Home button has a few seconds lag after I tap it what's up?
-----------------------------
There is a noticeable delay because of double tap home button mapping. If you don't use Vlingo (double tap home) and don't mind then flash this file in CWM.
Home Button Lag Fix

-----------------------------
[19] Want WiFi tethering on stock rom?
-----------------------------
Using Root Explorer you will need to delete TetheringManager2.apk from System/App. Simple as that.
-----------------------------
[20] Getting "E: Signature Verification Failed" in CWM?
-----------------------------
One of two things happened:
1) You used ROM Manager even though it is listed in BIG RED LETTERS above. In which case flash codeworkx kernel and this time DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER.
2) Go into CWM click Install Zip from SDCARD>Toggle Signature Verification. Should see "Signature Check: Disabled". If it says "Enabled" then try reflashing kernel in Odin again.
-----------------------------
[21] Installing Custom ROM from CWM
-----------------------------
*Use home button to make selections*
[1] Download ROMnameHere.zip and place it on your SD card.
[2] Boot into Recovery
[3] Wipe data/factory reset
[4] Wipe cache partition
[5] Goto advanced
[6] Wipe dalvik cache
[7] Install ROMnameHere.zip
[8] Boot up phone
-----------------------------
[22] What is the difference between the various governors available to me?
-----------------------------
The kernel governor is the basic function that controls how the CPU responds to increased demands for performance. An excellent guide can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420742

Nicely done so far... will be very useful I'm sure.

If I root my phone, do I lose all settings, apps, etc.?

Note that if you're already on stock, method 2 won't touch your data partition (settings, apps, etc.). So if you're using it to root from stock, you will keep your settings and such.
If you are using it to recover a hosed-up phone due to flashing the wrong thing or mangling your system partition, you may need to wipe data/factory reset in recovery depending on what you were running before.

Yes, please update..
AT&T will not unlock device unless you are an AT&T customer..
There is a wait period before new phones are eligible for unlock, and when it does, AT&T customers who have been with them for 90+ days can request an unlock code.
Just tell them you are going overseas and want to use your phone temporarily with a local carrier there.
note: turn around time can take up to a week.

I am an AT&T customer and I was on the phone with them yesterday and today to try to talk them into giving me an unlock code for my I777 with no luck. They claimed to have it on an exclusivity period.
After rooting, however, I was able to unlock the I777 to use with a foreign sim with the app Galaxy S Unlock in the Android Market.
It was pretty straightforward.

Isn't there a version of Darky Rom that works?

Im pretty sure I mentioned of a waiting period in my post..
Im assuming the root only gives you a software unlock ...
Pretty sure you also buy it on Ebay as well.

No. The device has only been out for 2 days - It'll be at least a week or two before good ROM porting methods exist.
It may be as simple as a kernel/modem swapout if you don't mind losing NFC, but it is unknown/untested whether that will actually work.

There are many different stories to talk about.
As it is very difficult for me to identify your interests and knowledge, I reduce my answer to the IMO most important threads for SGS2:
1. Intratech's Official Firmware thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Please read the first post. There is a detailed description of how to flash a new Firmware/ROM to your phone, and there is a Quick Root Guide too.
This rooting method is very elegant (as you do not get a yellow triangle and the binary counter will not be increased), but it is a little bit "manual".
For a little bit more "automated" rooting, look at the next thread.
Most important is, that you can find the latest, official and stable Firmware version most as non-wipe together with the corresponding stock kernel, which you might need for getting rid of the yellow triangle after flashing a rooted kernel (such as CF-Root or SpeedMod).
I always prefer flashing Frankenstein ROMs from third post, as you can combine them to any other Firmware parts, such as Modem/Phone/Baseband (for inter-connectivity) and CSC (for region and/or carrier dependent customizations) files.
2. Chainfire's CF-Root thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root
Everything you need to root your phone is to flash a rooted kernel to your phone (See description in first post).
And if you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, Chainfire has described it in his second post.
The only thing to do is to find the corresponding kernel for your ROM.
So, it is useful to flash a new ROM first, then flash the corresponding CF-Root kernel and you have root access on your phone.
There are many other goodies which come along with CF-Root kernel, such as ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery mode (an extended recovery mode including features, such as backup&restore, clear Dalvik cache, flash other zip files from sd card, etc.) and CWM Manager app (to have a very user-friendly app to make use of most new CWM recovery features).
But you can use any other rooted kernel, which is compatible with your ROM, to root your phone.
3. Custom ROMs ... such as CyanogenMod ...
There are many, custom ROMs and kernels optimized for different things, such as better performance (higher scores in benchmarks) or longer battery life.
You have to take your time and search on yourself what you really want most and which custom ROM or kernel you want to try.
Stick to the SGS II Official Android Development forum => http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1058
... search, read, test !
Just to be on the "safe" side, do a backup before flashing.
If you have CWM recovery mode (or CWM Manager app), just do a complete system / nandroid backup.
So you will be able to restore this backup, if one of the tested custom ROMs or kernels messed up your phone.
Good luck !
This Thing is really scary....lolz......
I mean it is too damn hard to understand....
really jailbreaking is so mch easier.....

By reading the threads stated above, multiple times, very carefully.
I can jailbreak a phone in my sleep, but this stuff kinda went over my head too. I got the GS2 (my first android also) a couple of months ago and have been reading up on stuff periodically but still don't understand a lot of it.
It's why I'm glad there are so many helpful people who write clear guides on how to do stuff.
I'm sure by the time the GS3 comes out I'll have a bit of a grasp on things!!
But just read read read.
Good luck.
Yea I was scared too. All I can say is, READ THE STEPS ONCE, TWICE, AND AGAIN BEFORE YOU TOUCH YOUR PHONE.
First off. It's not possible to brick it when flashing a kernel(to root). The only way to brick is replacing the boot loader, only official Samsung ROM's do that and it takes less than a second so the chances are slim. I say you start by downloading CF-ROOT for your current firmware. Just be careful and read the instructions. I also recommend to only flash roms from XDA. Also, never use PIT file in ODIN. Welcome to Android, I was new as well 3 months ago and I've been changing kernels and roms like crazy since then
Your current firmware is KF3. I HIGHLY recommend downloading and installing KJ3 from Intratech's thread. It is very fast. Download the one from Frankenstein firmwares. That will not root, you need to flash cf-root or other rooted kernels to do that.

dont worry mate i felt the same as well..but as stated above by the rest of the posts read carefully the steps and you should be fine honestly
People talk about jailbreaking iPhones being easy, i could say the same about rooting and flashing ROM's, simple to do once you get the hang of it (and read up)
Just take it slow, pour a coffee and read. I can't stress it enough. It'll make you more comfortable when you actually do it.
Search for the "litening ROM" has great step by step including links to Odin and all that good stuff.

For now just enjoy your phone as is probably. Over time you will find out what you really needed root for. For me titanium backup is number 1.
Unlike an iPhone, even without rooting you can do most things you need but yeah some need root.
Personally I would have rooted using cf root/speedmod etc to have cwm recovery for backups.

Also, to root you could have simply just flashed cf root in Odin as PDA and your done.

But now i want to get back to my stock firmware because i want to use tv out function which is missing from Cyanogen mod 7.1.0 so can u please help me out in getting back to my stock firmware...
Just go to intratech thread that was linked on first page. Then i would recommend to chose the frankenstein version to be able to reset your counter if needed.
Chose the firmware you want (kk5 is pretty good) and flash it with odin.
You can also flash a custom rom that is based on sammy like checkrom. You can do this trough cwm recovery and don't need to use odin for flashing.
If you don't have cwm yet you can install siyah kernel to get it.

There are a lot of ROMs based on the original Galaxy S software, so if you want the added customization, there are many options.
But what you want to do now to return to the original ROM, is to go in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
And find the one that was originally on the phone.
If your phone didn't come with a carrier specific ROM, you need to go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Simply download and flash it as a PDA file using Odin.

FAQ for the HTC Amaze 4G. Read Frequently Asked Questions before you post a question!

Here are many frequently asked questions that I have seen! I will keep updating this.
Q - Why did you make this thread?
A - Hoping you'd read this so we don't see the same question a million times. This thread should hopefully fix it or else you should go to this thread to see what you should do if you choose not to read this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426648
Q - I want to revert back to the stock ROM of the Amaze. How do I do that?
A - Stock ROMs are available here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335703
Q - How do I root my device / install clockworkmod recovery / install a custom ROM?
A - Follow Binary's thread and make sure you READ IT. If you don't, Binary will put you on his sh*t list! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426377
Q - How do I unroot my phone?
A - Just install a stock ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335703
Q - What is S-Off? S-Off means Security Off?
A - It will allow you to flash different radios, Hboots, etc.
Q - Do I need S-Off?
A - Not necessarily. If you just want to flash ROMs, then just use HTC's method to unlock the bootloader.
Q - Will unlocking the bootloader void my warranty?
A - Yes and no. They will not honor the warranty if it is a software related issue. They will honor it if the touch screen stops working, the camera doesn't work, etc. Basically hardware issues.
Q - How can I remove Sense?
A - You can't fully remove Sense but there are scripts you can flash in CWM to remove bloatware. Download it from here and flash it via CWM. http://developer.clockworkmod.com/downloads/663/1541/Bloat-Remover-v1.0.0.zip (Credit to Xboarder56)
Q - Is there a hack so I can unlock the phone to use for another carrier?
A - No. You can get the code from your carrier or buy the code online. Do not post where you can buy it or else Binary will be VERY pissed at you. This is the warning!
Q - How do I flash a kernel?
A - Use X's Kernel flasher tool. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328141
Q - I flashed a kernel but my wifi or hotspot doesn't work. Why?
A - Reflash the kernel. According to Faux123 " Because the previous kernel included a Secured RAM Disk, so you may need to run the script twice. (Once this is done, then any subsequent flash should complete on the first time)"
Q - What is a kernel?
A - A kernel is the building block of everything. It is like the atom for life.
Q - Why would I want to flash a different kernel?
A - Custom kernels have mods in them that make them more stable, overclockable, add new tweaks and features, etc.
Q - Can I overclock my phone?
A - With a custom kernel you can, depending on the modder of the kernel. At the moment, the only custom kernel is by faux which can be downloaded here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359951
Q - What does overclocking the kernel do?
A - Makes the phone faster, but you result in short battery life and it lowers the life of your phone.
Q - My battery sucks. What should I do?
A - I bought me an Anker battery. It has 1930 mAh so it lasts longer. I bought it on eBay for $16. Well worth the deal! You can lower your brightness, remove widgets, disable background data, turn off bluetooth/Mobile data network/WiFi, etc.
Q - My battery takes forever to charge. Why?
A - Big battery, needs time. Make love to the wife or go to sleep.
Q - When I press the lock button, the screen goes black. I press it again and it goes back to the regular screen and not the lockscreen. Why?
A - Sounds like a software bug. I just reboot my phone to fix it.
Q - My mobile network / Wifi doesn't load up when I unlock the screen. Why?
A - Do you have JuiceDefender installed? I believe there is a bug with it. It happens to me and I just restart the phone.
Q - Why aren't there many custom ROMs?
A - The Amaze is locked to a few carriers. Not every carrier worldwide sells it. It limits the amount of modders we have.
Q - I have Carrier IQ installed. How do I remove it?
A - Install a custom ROM. The modders usually remove it or root your device and download this app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110
Q - I get an error message with the WiFi Calling. Why?
A - Get a new SIM card from T-Mobile. You have to have the new 4G capable SIM card.
Q - I have slow data speeds on 4G. Why?
A - 4G depends on your area, how close is the 4G tower, if you are in a populated city, etc. Also, make sure you have a 4G SIM card.
Q - My touch screen would sometimes not let me press a certain button on the screen. Why?
A - I just restart the phone but here is a solution for now, I guess.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301723
Q - I have a low quadrant score with the ROM I use! Does it mean it is bad or slow?
A - No! Quadrant score doesn't mean anything! It is just a number. Using the actual system and the user experience is what matters.
Q - I have an unlocked Amaze / Ruby. Will the 4G on other carriers world wide?
A - Yes and No. It all depends on the frequencies the carriers use. If it isn't compatible, then you will be stuck on edge / 2G.
Q - I rooted my phone and now I want WiFi tethering! How do I do that?
A - Download this and install it.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta10.apk
After it opens, go to settings -> Change Device Profile. Select HTC Amaze / Ruby.
Go to settings -> Routing fix and select the box.
Q - I recorded a video. The video recording audio sucks. Why?
A - Ask HTC why they used a crappy piece of hardware.
Q - My screen looks like it bleeding! How can I fix it?
A - Put a band-aid on it! or follow the fix below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328250
Q - When I am going to send a message or dial a number, it doesn't show anything when I type the name but only the first name. Why?
A - Pretty weird, I know. We have to wait for a solution!
Q - I unlocked my phone and I am using it on another carrier. Where can I get the settings for the Internet/MMS?
A - I made a thread for APNs for other carriers. Check it out. If it doesn't have the carrier you want, PM me or post a comment on the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=1428457
Q - I want to back up my apps because I am switching to another phone / going to install a custom ROM / resetting my phone. Who do I do that?
A - I use an app called "MyBackup Pro". Awesome program!
https://market.android.com/details?...mNvbS5yZXJ3YXJlLmFuZHJvaWQuTXlCYWNrdXBQcm8iXQ..
Q - Why is Binary's posts everywhere?
A - Watch what you do, the man never sleeps! He's all over the place!
Q - Arabic letters are not connected and I can't type in Arabic. How do I fix this?
A - Look at my thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449871
and another just in caseeeeeeee.
just to be on the safe side!
Nice job. Thread stuck.

I'm trying to understand by what you mean "different hboot screen". Did you take out the battery, put it back in and hold the volume down button and power button to get to the bootloader?

I would like to know what different hboot screen is too. There is only ONE other hboot screen and it's completely black with HTC in the center with no text (other than the HTC of course).
I bed that he flashed a rom and it's booting up. Give it about five minutes or so.
I fixed it, I wiped the whole phone THEN flashed a ROM I forgot to wipe it, Oh my god I am such a [email protected]$$, lol, and by different hboot screen It looked different then before I rooted it and added a recovery

The OTA's are not RUU's they are regular signed zip files. The files are downloaded to the sdcard and aren't even deleted so it's easy to distribute.

Technically if we were to OTA update a locked phone wipe and reset to factory, unlock and do a nandroid, we would sorta be getting the same image, right?!!! except with S-ON kernel and radios are not updated with nandroid?

Getting the OTA is simple.
Of course you want to make your nandroid backup first.
Flash the stock recovery back and stock rom. This can either be from the RUU or the stock de-odexed ROM specific to your software. When you get the prompt to update go ahead and do so. Install your OTA update then just re-root. You shouldn't have to re-lock and unlock your bootloader.
Finally, restore your backup.
Binary, have you gone to sleep yet? lol.
Also, look at Post #2, last Q&A I did. =D

I had to go to a trial today so I managed to get about four hours of sleep.
I'll be a little cranky later. Warn the noobs.

[Q] Simple questions, simple answers

Hi everyone....
Sorry for some dumb questions but I am new at this... and this is the greatest forum for andriod users....
What is a Kernel? and what it looks like on the phone?
How many types of roots there is (no ways to root)? Is there only one, two or hundreds? and sorry about this one, but how does a root phone looks like? is there an app (like Cydia on iOS) or how do I know a phone is rooted? :silly:
Is CWM a way to root the phone? or a Kernel?
What is a ROM? Any ROM could run with any kind of root i.e. CWM? or each ROM just run with its own root/kernel?
What is Brick? what happens when my phone Bricks? is now my phone trash?
Is there a "restore default setting" bottom like in iTunes?
THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT, is there a file with, lets say, all the factory settings for the Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 to restore as default?
Thanks for your responses, aprreciate it.

Do you want to root your phone? I will give instructions on how (at the end of the reply), but if you dont then just dont do it, you have a chance of messing up your phone. there's your warning...
To your first question "what is a kernel"
When software needs the hardware to do anything, it sends a request to the kernel. You can flash a kernel via Odin (search it up Google) IF you don't already have CWM then just flash the kernel in CWM. Make sure if you flash in Odin the file is a .tar or .tar.md5 type. And in CWM it is a zip file.
To your second question "how many ways are there to root ( if i understand your question correctly) and how to know if you are rooted"
There are hundreds of ways to root. Maybe not hundreds but still a lot. Different phones have different ways to root. Some times i unroot my phone just for the fun of rooting it again a different way. Rooting the phone doesn't automatically change the appearance of the phone. There are however a few apps that can help you do that but launchers are for unrooted phones and they are pretty good. There actually is an app called either "SuperUser" or "SuperSU". If you have this in your app drawer then you have root. DO NOT INSTALL EITHER OF THEM FROM THE MARKET. only if you know what you are doing do it.
To your third question "is CWM a way to root your phone?"
I will explain this in the guide on how to root your phone. But yes, you can root in CWM. i will show u how to root in CWM as a matter of fact.
To you 4th question "what is a ROM and what type of phone does it run on"
first of all, your question to this was said incorrectly. let me just clear something for you, there is one type of root access you can have. rooting your phone will just give you special permissions that the phone does not come with. so basically root helps you get EVERYTHING out of your phone that you want. also CWM is not a type of root, it is a recovery that will help you flash roms, kernels, themes, mods, etc. right now you are running on stock rom, which means you have the official android version for your phone. you can flash different ROMs and kernels but usually your rom comes with the recommended kernel.
for your 5th question "what is bricking your phone"
there are two ways of bricking your phone, soft brick and hard brick. Soft brick=not total trash, hard brick=your screwed. you can recover from soft brick but not form hard brick. bricking is just basically messing up your system files that lead to the road of scrwing up your phone. you dont really need to know about it if you do things correctly.
to your 6th question "how to restore to default or factory reset"
it is factory reset in android. factory reset will delte all info from your phones storage. so your internal sd card ( where all your files are) will be safe. also if you have an external sd card that also wont be touched. but you can format them by connecting your phone to your pc and right click and format if you want to. INSTRUCTIONS: go to settings<backup and reset<Factory Reset data. also if your phone is off you can boot into recovery and select factory reset from there. WARNING CWM is not touch enabled for most phones, so use your volume keys to move and power button to select.
HOW TO ROOT, THIS MIGHT MESSUP YOUR PHONE< YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
1. Download odin (googel it) (attached)
2. download attached file ( corn kernel) DO NOT EXTRACT LEAVE AS IS
3. boot into download ( you have a galaxy note if i am correct) i think it goes like: power off, then wait 2 mins for everything to close. HOLD the HOME BUTTON, VOLUME DOWN BUTTON, AND POWER BUTTON UNTIL A SCREEN POPS UP. if this is you first time, there will be a warning warning you, press the VLOUME UP button to get rid of it. you will know be in download mode.it should say downloading
4. Open odin ( run as admin if on windows, idk why but the ppl i got this info said to)
5. connect your phone to your pc via usb cord. odin should say "added"
6. click pda tab DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE, THAT WILL SOFT BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!!
7. chose the corn kernel you downloaded in step two.
8. press start.
9. wait, odin should say "1 succeeded/0 failed"
10. wait a little longer until your phone FULLY REBOOTS, to do this i would recommend waiting 5 mins
11. shut off your phone again.
12. PRESS volume UP, HOME BUTTON, POWER BUTTON TO GET INTO RECOVERY
13. it should be in clock work mod recovery now.
14. go to advanced<and it should say "install super user and busy box (root)" go down there using your volume keys, select it with power button.
15. after it says done go back and hit reboot system now.
16. YOU WILL HAVE ROOT!

ROOT BOUNTY FOR SGH-527 with 4.4.2 KitKat Update

Greetings, fellow Mega-Maniacs!
I am currently working with dev Geohot to get us root access for the SGH-I527 with Baseband Version I527UCUBNE7. All known root methods have been tested and proven to not work with this version of android with this baseband, due to the extremely locked down nature of Samsung Knox on this device.
I, personally, have been throwing every exploit I can think of at this device, to no avail. As of the time and date of this post, we have a donor ready to help the cause (Special thanks to caguas56). That is why I'm proposing a bounty on root access for this phone (SGH-I527 AT&T US version only, although there is a high possibility that it'll work on the Sprint,T-Mo and VZW variant).
The first developer who can successfully get ROOT on KitKat with baseband I527UCUBNE7 and demonstrate this with a successful public test will be awarded the bounty. The bounty will be split equally between devs and donors willing to team up.
I'm in for $10 at the moment, and I'll piss away more if needed down the line.
Who else is in? LETS GET THIS DONE, PEEPS!
Please, only posts regarding root access on this thread. For firmware rollbacks to 4.2.2, see azpatterson3's thread located HERE

In for at least $20.
Put me down for 2 bucks.
I know you stated you had tried it all but I have a couple questions for you.
#1. Are you able to odin and access the latest PhilZ Recovery on your Mega? I ask because I read other sections like the Note 2's, etc on AT&T and they are able to flash recovery fine and boot into recovery fine.
#2. If you have tried this method, did you try and flash the latest SuperSU v2.00 from Chainfire through PhilZ?
================
Below is a method I suggested to some in my OTA Update thread to NE4 ( KitKat ) for Rooting all my Galaxy phones on KitKat listed and not one has failed to gain root or to disable KNOX. Note this method will trip KNOX and void your warranty. Try this at your own risk....
================
1.Flash the latest Philz recovery ( Galaxy Mega (meliusltexx) ) .
1a) Be sure when flashing a custom recovery not to allow the device to reboot into the OS right after and instead go straight to the recovery first.
( Uncheck reboot device in Odin or if you forgot to uncheck the box after a successful flash of the Custom Recovery in Odin, quickly hold down vol+, Menu & Power Button or last resort pull the battery before it has time to reboot into the OS {again this is after the phone reboots from flashing the custom recovery and passes}).
The security will over write the custom recovery with the stock recovery and you will have to flash Philz or if available TWRP again. First boot into custom recovery will make it stick on after.
2. Once flashed and booted into recovery, you'll be on the main screen.
( Optional but recommended )
2a) At this point, and it is just a suggestion to you all, make a complete backup of the phone as it sits unmodded. I couldn't really tell you how many times I have read/seen of people post that they forgot to back up their phones after they had attempted to do something to their phones and had caused them to have problems..... well many would be surprised how often this happens and I have been guilty of it due to just being impatient. This way you will have a starting point fresh, stock and even unrooted to go back to. After your done proceed to step #3.
3. Tick on Philz settings.
4. Tick on Re-root System (Super SU).
5. You will then see the log scroll at the bottom and tell you to reboot and install SuperSU through the Playstore.
6. Reboot Device and once you have booted up, install SuperSU via Playstore or if you have the APK on hand, install it.
7. Once installed it will ask you that it needs to update binaries, do so. It will also detect KNOX and ask to attempt
to disable it, go ahead and it will attempt to do so. ( I have yet for it to say unsuccessful )
8. Enjoy being rooted afterwards.
=======================================
If after step #6 it fails to update binaries or for some chance the SuperSU APK failed to install properly or failed to provide Root Access, below is a link for the newer SuperSU v2.00 that is flashable in your Custom Recovery. Flash it by rebooting back into Recovery and flashing the ZIP file that's downloadable from the middle of the main page in the link below. Once flashed continue on from step #6 above.

Well technically all bootloaders are locked (except for the few that aren't) but I take it AT&T is wanting/trying to join the band wagon with Verizon and locking the bootloaders indefinitely by encrypting them on all the devices they can now.
Sorry then, my method will not work straight forward. Good luck. :good:

#2. If you have tried this method, did you try and flash the latest SuperSU v2.00 from Chainfire through PhilZ?
================
================
=======================================
Thank you @Chainfire

Believe me, we have tried it all. I have tried a process similar to this and when the phone got done with all the flashing and went to boot up, I got a prompt that said 'We have detected software not approved for use by AT&T. Please take your phone to an AT&T store for assistance.' It also says Secure Check Failed: Kernel. I had to send my phone to sammy to get it fixed since I tripped a few flags. Should be back by Friday the 10th.
Possible to use this method with 4.4 kernel from mega?

I don't know much about this but my S4 active also has a locked bootloader, and I was able to achieve root on 4.4.2 using the above method. Thought it might be possible to adapt to your cause.

My bad..
Alright.
To summarize for people who haven't paid attention. Phone was bricked in a last ditch effort to flash back to 4.3 because the 4.4 update made my phone run like s#it. I also have an S4 Active and the service sucks harder than it already did. The 4.4 update makes the S4 drop out constantly and the battery life blows. Samsung told me to run kies in download mode to get it back to 4.3 I did and BOOM, now phone is fu©k!ng bricked and they won't fix it, claiming it's 'rooted' because the kernel says it's version 3 when it's supposed to be at 4 for kitkat. Fu©k!ng duh, you jerks made me flash it back. I am personally never buying another samsung product again because their customer service was horsesh!t. I happen to have a sammy tv, blu ray, home theater and 2 of their former 'top end' phones, but now I'm ditching them. They can lick my scrotum for all I care anymore.
end rant, back to music.

[V2][Root][G950U/W]PartCyborgRom - Root for Snapdragon S8 with Custom Rom

SamFail presents...
PartCyborgRom
BQL1
A Rooted Custom Rom
For G950U/W, Bootloader Revisions 1 or 2 only any higher are not currently rootable or vulnerable to this exploit
Updates
New Release and a new OP that I hope is easier to read.
Send feedback or suggestions on improvements to me via pm here or on telegram.
Heads Up
You may notice that the BL version of this release is different than the system rom part.
The rom version is in fact BQL1, but the BL is a new version of AQK2. The reason for this is because
the latest combination, ARA1, has a number of sensors not working. I figured out a fix but it requires splicing
stuff in from other versions, and it didnt feel like the battery lasted as well. I am still testing though and
the next release if its ready will come with ARA1. This is not the same BL as the previous
release though, so if you upgrade also flash this new BL!
Thanks!
Featured Modifications
Deodexed
Deodexed for all devices.
I found a way that works!
It should keep working as long as nougat
(is that a haiku?)
Xposed Preinstalled
PCR now comes out of the flasher with xposed pre-installed!
NOTE: Xposed Installer may crash on first boot. It will not crash after setup finishes and you reboot
New Boot Animation
Another great one from @Ryan-refoua.
This one is my favorite so far.
JamesDSP
I added another DSP style audio mod. JamesDSP is similar to V4A in how it operates and what features it has, but it has some really awesome features that have made me a fan and a regular user. Among other things, it has a better convolver (IRS processing) implementation, and its bass boost is significantly better than v4a. If there are things you like about V4A you can use both at the same time.
ITYBP Modded YouTube
A last minute addition, this is a really nice youtube mod brought to you by @laura almeida, @Razerman and @ZaneZam. It features some cool additions like native adblocking (no more xposed module), overriding your max youtube resolution (you can watch 4k videos on your phone, but not 4k hdr). I have been using it for a while and really like it. A big thanks to them for letting me include it with PCR
Improved Debloating
Found better stuff to delete. Added back some stuff I took out before that some of you asked for.
If you find something missing that you want back, pull it from the stock rom and install it in /system/app or /system/priv-app, wherever you got it from.
Improved Battery Life
Thanks to some battery sleuthing by @TheMadScientist, this release comes with a nice big bump in efficiency. With just some very minor tuning using amplify and a service disabler, I can get around 1%/h drain.
Performance Improvements
That increased battery life does not come at the cost of performance. In fact performance is better too. Part of that is due some personally tested build.prop tweaks. Another part is some data optimisation scripts that now run at boot. You wont notice those, but they are there doing their thing.
Other Features
New for first time flashers
- Pre-Rooted with SuperSU installed
- CSC OYN pre-installed. Tested working on several carriers
- RCS and VoLTE icons removed from status bar.
- High quality audio mods, including
- Viper Audio (V4A)
- Dolby Atmos from the Axon 7
- Pandora hifi audio framework
- Native Google Dialer & Contacts support, including local search, spam call blocking
- Oreo 8.1 Emoji Icon Set
- Custom Lockscreen Clock font
- Stock system display fonts replaced with Apple's original San Francisco Font
Special Thanks
- @ahiron and @Zackptg5 for the killer sounds from V4A and Dolby Atmos Mods!
- The Aiur crew for Pandora (now a legacy mod but works great on the s8)
- @syndre for the Google Dialer and Contacts framework mod
- @rayan-refoua for the beautiful Tech Lines Custom boot and shutdown animations!
- Last but not least, my new friend @laura almeida, along with @Razerman amd @ZaneZam for letting me include the iYTBP - injected YouTube Background Playback Mod
- everyone who tested
Warnings/Disclaimers/Known Issues
- 80% Battery life like every other rooted US snapdragon device
- Flashing on a USB 3.0 port will likely cause corruption in your flash that can cause kernel panics, loss of root, and occasionally very strange other errors. If you get something like this, its not the rom its a hardware conflict that can only show up with larger images like are used in SamFail flashing. See the section below on Kernel Panics for more.
- If there is an app or apk from the stock rom that you wish you had installed, the best solution is to extract it from your stock rom image and copy it to the same place in /system using a root file manager.
SamFail Rooting Process
and Rom Installation
WARNING: THE FOLLOWING WILL ERASE YOUR WHOLE PHONE
If you have a SDCard, remove it from your device. Occasional firmware incidents have wiped SDCards in the past. It has neer happened to me, but I have a backup of my sdcard so I can be a little more risky. Better safe than sorry.
Prepare the Following:
- complete stock rom at your bootloader rev in case things dont work
- Everything backed up
- Both Prince Comsy Odin, and Regular Odin for flashing stock
- A USB 2.0 Port. If you attempt to flash with a USB 3.0 port it may work, but if you get kernel panics, or unexpected bad behavior and/or crashes your usb3 is absolutely to blame. some people get lucky and suceed after a few tries, YMMV. If you can not acquire a machine with a usb2.0 port, get a usb2.0 hub and run your phone into that & that into your machine. Reports are that has made things work for some, but we get few reports back.
What is my Bootloader Revision?
Your bootloader revision is part of the baseband build number of the firmware you are currently running. Lets use this rom as our example. The full build number is as follows: G950USQS2BQL1
Start from the right and count 5 characters back. See that 2? That is the bootloader revision for the firmware that came with this rom. But we are not flashing the BQL1 firmware (or Baseband), We are using an older version because it works better. The version we are flashing is: G950UEU2AQK2. Can you tell which revision it is?
Is my Phone Compatible?
Is it a G950U? Is it a G950W? If you answered "yes" to one of those questions, then the answer is "yes". That being said, flashing this rom if you are on bootloader revision 1 will upgrade your bootloader revision to 2, which means that any previous rom you were running wont work, so be prepared by having a copy of stock for bootloader version 2. If you don't want to move to version 2, you can still run the latest PartCyborgRom though, just use the G950UEU1AQk1 BL_ tar under Old Downloads in place of the one that came with this one. It will work just fine. However if you are unsure I suggest you go ahead and upgrade, there are not really any benefits to staying on 1 at this point.
Steps to Root
1) Download and unzip AP Part 1 and BL Part 2 zip files.
2) Download and unzip Prince Comsey Odin and start it up
3) Reboot device into Download mode and connect it to your pc
4) Open Comsy Odin and only add the AP Part1.tar.md5 file. Select only the following options:
- "Auto-Reboot"
- "F-Reset Time"
- "Nand Erase All"
NOTE: Odin will freeze while checking the AP tar.md5 hash.
Be patient, it will come back. If your computer is old this will take even longer.
5) Click "Start" and wait for the system.img.ext4 file to flash fully to your device. This will take a while too.
ATTENTION
When the flash finishes, this is when the SamFail magic happens. Instead of saying "Failed (Auth)" like it should, the device will crash into upload mode with "Unknow Error".
If your device does not do this, and just says "Failed (Auth)" or something similar and stays in download mode, you need to start again from the beginning, but using a different set of usb ports as you have suffered from the usb3 corruption.
When you see the upload mode page, do the 3 button salute to reboot into download mode again.
WARNING: When you reboot from upload mode, it wont look like download mode. You will see an error.
When you reboot back into download mode, your screen will say that you had a failed update and you need to do emergency repair or take your device to a service center.
Rest assured, your phone is actually in download mode, and Odin will have recognized it and said "Added!" along with the com port lighting up underneath the progress bar. Just continue the process. It is safe to do so and that error will go away after the next step.
6) Close and re-open Comsy Odin or hit the reset button, and add BL_PartCyborgRom-BootLoopEdition-<version>.tar.md5 to the BL section.
7) Leave the default checkboxes for "F Reset Time" and "Auto Reboot" checked. Uncheck "Nand erase all". Click "Start" and flash the BL (part 2) to your device.
Note: If you forgot to uncheck nand erase all, don't worry. You are just wasting time doing something again that you already did, the outcome is the same. "All" in "Nand Erase All" means "all userdata", which means cache and, well, userdata. Nothing else is deleted.
8) Wait for the flash to finish . It won't take very long at all as the files are small.
9) When it has finished, Odin will say PASS and your device will reboot into recovery.
From this point forther the scary download error message will be gone for good (or until next flash). Don't go looking yet though, you have more work to do to get root.
Warning: Failure to follow this step could lead to a corrupted instance with no cell coverrage
10) When in recovery issue a factory reset. This ensures that your device has a userdata and cache partitions that are valid, and that the csc is processed correctly. Failure to do the reset could cause issues with either.
11) Boot the device as normal. Wait for it to come up. Its deodexed so it will take longer than even your average odexed rom.
All done!
FlashFire Instructions
- Get the ROM on your phone and unzip it
- Open up FlashFire
- Add a Wipe task, select the top 3 items only
- Select Flash Firmware and load up the AP_PartCyborgRom-BootLoopEdition-<version>.Part1.tar.md5 file to flash your new system
- Select Reboot to Recovery
- Make sure "Inject Root" is NOT checked
- Press go. Wait for the rom to flash and your device to reboot into recovery
- From recovery do a factory reset
- Then select reboot to Download Mode
- When device reboots into Download mode, flash BL_PartCyborgRom-BootLoopEdition-<version>.Part2.tar.md5
You have to use odin for the BL file because flashing bootloaders in FlashFire is a bad idea.
Dirty Flashers
Yes, you can dirty flash this rom to upgrade, however it is problematic and can cause issues. I did it for a long time, but my install was a mess by the time I gave up and reset.
To dirty flash, follow your preferred method of flashing above, but skip the Wipe step.
Odin
Skip "Nand Erase All" during the Part 1 flash. Do everything else the same
FlashFire
For the first Wipe task, instead of selecting the top 3, select only Dalvik like the second wipe task.
NOTE: This procedure is ONLY for people upgrading from an earlier PartCyborgRom version. If you are coming from stock you can not dirty flash because you userdata is encrypted which is not supported by the Factory firmware. If you are coming from other rom, or stock, I have no idea man but don't look at me if it blows up.
ANOTHER NOTE: This method of flashing is unsupported! If you do this and you have issues, you are on your own. If you think they are the rom, then back up your entire rom, wipe and reproduce them.
Help! I Got a Boot loop!
If you get a boot loop or your device hangs at boot, try the following:
1) Reboot to recovery and factory reset again.
To get to recovery hold power+vol-down until screen goes black, then wait till upload mode (press power key for 7+ secs) comes up. Then press vol-down+power again and hold it till it reboots and as SOON as the screen goes black switch to holding vol-up+power+bixby. Hold it for 5-7sec then let go and you will wind up in recovery mode. If this doesnt help, or you can't get to recovery because you cant press the buttons right, proceed to the next step.
2) Try flashing just Part 2 (the BL) again. not only will this get you back in recovery, it will also format your cache again. Its worth a shot and doesnt take long.
Kernel Panic, Invalid Argument
Start Over
Go back to the beginning and do everything again. If it fails again, even in a slightly different way this time, bad interaction between the s8 and your USB port/controller/cable/etc are causing the image to be corrupted as its being written to disk. Try the following:
1) New USB Ports. If you have them, use a different set of usb ports (not the one next to it, but one further away). Its possible that that will be your "good" port, and that will be enough. Lots of machines also have some USB3 ports and some USB2.
2) New Cable. Its less likely, but maybe a new cable will help. Do the whole thing over with a new cable.
3) Try a few times. It sounds silly, but people who have had this issue have reported that eventually it just works. Try a few times until you get sick of trying. If you try like 10 times it probably wont work on the 11th though.
I Dont Have Another USB Port!
Try to borrow your partner/spouse/roommate/friends computer for a quick flash. Ask about the USB ports though, because another 3.0 port may not help you.
If you can't get someones computer, you can purchase a USB2.0 Hub online or at your friendly neighborhood electronics store. They arent very expensive, and I have heard positive reports from people saying it did the trick.
None of that Worked! I'm Screwed!
No you probably arent. I can count on one hand the number of people who someone couldnt get this working eventually. Some of us will be here to help. Check out our telegram channel, where people will be around that can help you. Its right here!.
And they all rooted happily ever after.
The End.

Flashed fine through flashfire(AP only) was a bit worried because after I flashed the bootloader I got a kernel panic upload mode, but I reflashed the bootloader and it worked out fine. Running it for a few hours now and I noticed right away the difference in battery drain, as in, amazing job at extending the battery life. Thanks for your work, look forward to Future updates :good:
Update: only bug I've found is auto rotate doesn't really work, and internet connection issues(might be my network)
I'm new to SIM unlocked and haven't rooted since s4 so possible newb question but
Can I use this rom to root unrooted AQH3?
I'm on sim-unlocked G950U.
Thanks for any help.

Same here.
I tried the first method (fully stock) and it failed badly to where download mode did not work, had to use Smart Switch emergency recovery
First attempt without flashing CSC on TMo resulted in Kernel Panic after reboot from Download mode. I ended up flashing the CSC and now the Tmobile boot splash is showing up and seems to be working, will update to confirm in a few minutes.
Update: booted just fine now into Setup Wizard...

@partcyborg.
So... I just got an S8 from Boost Mobile after my LG Optimus f7 started FINALLY failing. Had it rooted and cwm thanks to the genius and hard work of devs like GameTheory and PlayfulGod!
1. Should it be safe to use this method and flash this particular ROM?
2. Do I need to do anything special because it's Boost n not vzw?
3. It was mentioned that in spite of 80% battery issue, battery life is extremely well optimised. Anyone else with S8 on Boost try this? Worth it to take the plunge?
Don't care about Knox, Safety Net, etc. I don't use my device for transactions via Samsung/Android Pay, nor Gaming. Wondering if this will nix Playstore purchases via credit card on file? NOT a deal beaker by any means. Just curious.
I desperately miss having root and custom recovery. siiiiiigggghhhh...
Anyway, Thanks for any info and THANK YOU @partcyborg for all the time and hard work you've put into trying to help us get the most out of these phones!
This is my first $700 phone and I'll probably have her as long as I did my f7. ( as log as battery doesn't die or I can have it replaced at a repair shop when the time comes, for less than a fortune. lol)
Attached is a screen of my phone's specs if it helps.
Thanks again,

This is about all we have as far as ROMs go. We don't have a custom recovery because our bootloader is locked and it's not looking like it's going to be unlocked ever. You can flash this on any G950U phone, carrier doesn't matter.

I'm happy enough with the battery. Bonus is that you won't wear it out charging to 80% only apparently.
It's a multi CSC so you should be fine on boost. I can't test it though I only have VZW. Worst case flash the CSC but only do that if it fails to boot.

This is about all we have as far as ROMs go. We don't have a custom recovery because our bootloader is locked and it's not looking like it's going to be unlocked ever. You can flash this on any G950U phone, carrier doesn't matter.

Yeah, Bootloader's a major buzzkill.
Root and decent custom ROM would be a nice consolation prize.
What's your take on the battery afterwards? I practically live on my phone and with not being able to swap batteries, a major hit to battery life is pretty much a deal breaker. BTW, thx for the quick reply!

No but you can install rooted aqi6 with it. This literally flashes /system and replaces what you have installed. I find aqi6 much improved TBH
