Cheap Working MHL-HDMI Adaptor - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I can confirm this works:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005F9W6DU

hows the vid quality?

monoprice has adapters for 14 dollars. Also since its a digital signal u don't have to worry about the quality of the picture. If it works it works if the signal is bad it won't work.

Well, it is about what you would expect from WVGA stretched to a 1080p screen. Not bad, not great.

So it will record 1080p but outputs it at 800x480 via the hdmi? If that is the case then that's extremely disappointing.

I think it changes resolution when playing video. Notice how the screen blanks out briefly before playback begins? I think that's the resolution switchover. At least that's what happens on my international SGS2...

I want one.. but is it worth it? lol

just wanna verify that it mirrors your screen, correct? so its fully operational while outputting?

Complete mirror of screen. Can confirm movie playback is in 1080p. Fully functional.

How do you mirror your screen? I have the phone connected to the TV through this Micro USB - HDMI adapter, but I see nothing on the TV when I play a video.
UPDATE: I think I answered my own question by reading other threads: you need to actually separately power the adapter through the USB port on its side. That's a bummer, so you actually need a separate USB power source!

Mediahub files blocks hdmi out.
Works if i play first then plug it in.
But once i move files off mediahub to sd card, that trick doesnt work anymore

Ya mine is being blocked as well. I bought the OEM Samsung one to watch my media hub stuff. Kinda disappointing. As stated before if you start the playback before you plug it in it works quite well.

So I just picked up an adapter locally and while it works just fine, I'm not sure it's working as it should with regards to charging. If I simply have the adapter plugged in and then plugged into the wall, it charges very very very slowly. If I actually plug in the hdmi cable and do something like stream a video, buh bye battery life. It drains crazy fast.
This adapter from Amazon, does the charger help keep the battery at around the same level while in use or do you see it drop a good bit as well?
Oh and with regards to MediaHub, whether I start a video before hooking up this adapter or after, I still get the same error on my tv about protection, etc.

In regards to charging this phone charges slow and if your using it watching video it will just barley keep up. The phone seems to use almost as much juice as it get from the charger as your watching video.

Anyone try a MHL-VGA with this phone?

I've tried a few adapters. There's 2 different adapters from Samsung the one with product #2 worked the best for me its on Amazon I got it for 25$ and works well. Also mirroring works even better with a launcher like adw ex as when it switches into landscape mode it looks great on a big screen

HDMI Out via MHL Adapter from T-Mobile

So, I ordered the mhl adapter for the sensation from t-mobile on Monday so that I would have it when I got the phone. Well, got the phones on Wednesday and the adapter didn't show till today, so poor planning on my part. I attached a pic of my invoice with the product number for reference.
Anyway, I can say that the adapter works great and displays the full ui from the phone to the tv perfectly. It scales nicely in landscape and you can hardly see any lag in the phone or HDMI out. It's always fun playing angry birds on a plasma screen. Also audio is sent to the tv nicely, angry birds with surround sound is pretty sweet. The extent of my testing is with angry birds and the phone ui, but I'm sure I'll find some more purposeful uses for it in the future.
Something I didn't like about it though. You HAVE TO have the charger plugged in, or you will not get HDMI out. You can plug them in any order that you like, but if there is no charger connected, you will not get HDMI out.
I'm sure someone will fix this once we're rooted, but It's kind of annoying right now. I'm also sure there's a good reason for it to be this way, likely because the battery won't last long sending out hd. I'll just have to get a new tv that supports mhl so I won't have to run two cables, yeah, that's a good excuse to get a new tv, right?
Edit: Here's a link to the T-Mobile store,
http://find.t-mobile.com/controller?N=0&Ntk=primary&Ntx=mode+matchpartialmax&Ntt=supa37117
Pick Sensation 4G and then scroll down to Data, it should be in there.
Edit: Actually, you'll have to go back and pick HTC, then Sensation, then Data. Otherwise it doesn't show up for some reason.

Right on, good to hear that HTC hasn't blocked a bunch of content from being outputted like they did with the old Evo.
MHL doesnt support 3d currently. Maybe in revision 2.0 with "hopefully" a firmware update needed instead of new hardware.
But from what I saw online it should only be able to output 2d.

If your TV has DLNA support, then yea. Or you can use a PS3 via DLNA, too. I'm not sure of the Xbox has DLNA support, though.

I know this is OT, but I picked up a nice media player a few days ago (had to replace my older Argosy HV335T), and this thing is perfect with DLNA (they just call it UPNP, there is no actual DLNA option on it). Been streaming quite a bit from my EVO 3D already with no delay or lag on it.

No, no need for the micro hdmi cable from the Evo 4G. The adapter uses a standard hdmi cable. What you DO need is the micro-USB charge cable to plug into the appropriate port on the adapter.
I have both of those np, got my micro hdmi cable from monoprice
Just fyi pulled pictures on to my pc....was able to open them and using red/cyan glasses to view on 2d monitor and 2d panisonic plasma worked great....havn't played with video yet...will keep you updated
Just literally got mine in the mail. Didn't think T-Mobile would ship it via parcel post with $5.99 standard shipping (I expected at least first class. Way to be cheap about it T-Mobile). Should have opted for overnight since I ordered it last Wednesday and was hoping to get it by Friday or Saturday.
Overall pretty impressive. NetFlix, Green Hornet and everything else I've tried will output to the HDTV I'm a little bit annoyed that you MUST plug in power for it to work. I understand the MHL standard isn't available on any TV yet, but I didn't think power was a requirement with the adapter. Not a huge issue, but still wishing they went with microHDMI.
Only thing I've noticed is with Hulu+ when installing a permission was set to block HDMI, but since I am not able to stream any videos because of an "incompatible device" I can't test it. Can't wait for root though so I can really have fun with CM7 and HDMI mirroring

Also, does Cyanogenmod (AOSP) work with it?

It is full mirroring of the whole screen great huh? I found that out here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXotbjcB6xA
And as far as I know Cyanogenmod does not have it yet but i'm really sure it will soon.
Yup, it does full mirroring, so you can play games as well
The bad part is that i got the ikross mhl adapter and it seems to be defective or smth, cause it keeps disconnecting for no apparent reason (even if i don't touch it).
My question is which mhl adapter is worth buying? I'd really like one i could use while moving the phone. Should i just go with the original one from htc? but that's a bit expensive. Any suggestions?
I have the T-Mobile brand and have no issues with it. It's been carried around in my laptop bag for a while, still works perfect. $20 from the store and around $27 shipped if you order from their site

All of them should, that's their design. Mhl plugs in to the phone, charger and hdmi plug in to the mhl. I know that atleast the T-Mobile version does, all should though. It mirrors everything, and charges my phone just fine at the same time.

Got my MHL for $15.73 shipped from Monoprice. Been using it everyday since the day I got it to stream netflix and other TV/movie sites from my 3D or off one of the flyers in my house. It's probably been in use for 60+ days straight for about 5-6 hours each day, maybe more... I don't have cable or satellite I'm actually thinking of ordering another one maybe two just in case this one breaks or gets lost.
The monoprice adapter works very well. I've had no connection problems - and I get a great picture depending on the app. Diceplayer works particularly well for putting out HD video.
The only possible drawback is that the monoprice adapter limits you to USB charging, not AC charging - when you use it. So if you're streaming while outputting to the TV, you'll still lose a small amount of phone battery.
On another thread specifically on the MHL adapter charging topic - no one confirmed whether the other chargers were registering AC charging or not. That might be the one advantage in getting another brand.

Thanks - please do. People in the other thread assumed their phone was charging whether streaming or not - but couldn't confirm with testing values. I thought my phone was charging as well - until I installed a battery monitor and checked. After using many - Battery Monitor Widget appears to work the best on our phone.
If you could test your MHL adapter while streaming, and report back the charging rate reported - that would be a great help. Please report what radios you have on, I usually leave all of them on for testing purposes.
I'm very interested to see if any of these MHL adapters will charge while streaming, as well. I plan on this being my next accessory for the 3D but I don't want to get one that charges with half power.
Forgot to test out the other night. I'll try an get to it tonight before going to bed. Oh, I use Battery Monitor Widget Pro. Saw some one mentioning that app earlier, so you'll be able to relate fully. For radios, Wifi and Mobile Network are never turned off on my phone. That's how I'll be testing as I never have Bluetooth on when steaming movies, and only have GPS on when I'm using Navigation or an app that needs GPS. Obviously won't need GPS to stream a movie in my house...

got Monoprice MHL to charge last night while streaming
Took quite a bit of tinkering, but finally got positive charging (albeit not much) while streaming Battle of Midway from Netflix and the Wire from HBO GO last night. Using WTSB 1.9 rom and Monoprice MHL adapter.
What I had to do was:
-Airplane Mode;
-Turn on Wifi;
-Turn off account sync;
-Taskmanager to kill off everything but netflix;
-Use SetCPU to underclock to (648ishMHZ for netflix) or (900ishMHZ for HBO GO);
-Covedesign app to turn off button backlights;
-Covedesign app to go to backlight "blink" and disabled blink (like jumping rope) just at the right time for the backlight to stay off (may have to do this several times)(though this makes it damn hard to interact with phone unless you have bt mouse or keyboard - if not, may just want to turn brightness down as far as you can get);
My setup:
Evo3d streaming via wifi from iSpot 4G Clear device, outputting via MHL to optoma pk201 pico projector, with stock charger+usb, and audio via MHL/HDMI to pico projector.
Comment:
Netflix ROCKS (wonder why no stock landscape UI though)!!! Great streaming, no hiccups; HBO GO, on the other hand, (while AMAZING selection) constantly drops out to "Audio only stream, connect to stronger network or wifi for video", stutters, ... all kinds of crap and this is on a pretty regular 6mbps 4G Clear iSpot!

BTW, anyone know of an app that lets you monitor your total mA usage live?
like a graphing app or anything?
There used to be a great one for WM6 that showed, for example 400milliamps with screen on, and 200milliamps with screen off and graphed it over time.
I keep getting pissed off with these phones; can anyone help me (I've been searching for years and can't find answers) mind you, I'm coming from the x51v wm6.5.3; PalmTX; Sammy Omnia...
-Why can't we turn off the backlight to the screen?
-Why can't we MANUALLY rotate to landscape or portrait? (I know you can manually engage or disengage the AUTOmatic rotation feature)
-(maybe this does exist) Why can't we get readings on how many mA we are using?
It just seems like the x51v from 2002 was so much more advanced and customizable, seems like we are re-creating the wheel over and over again.
Sorry for the rant.

MHL Adapters are required to charge while being used, in fact, they only function if the charger is plugged in. That's part the spec, and I'd like to think I know quite a bit about MHL since I've done work and testing on the product for the company that created it, which is Silicon Image : http://www.siliconimage.com/products/family.aspx?id=10 . As for the quoted person, the adapter is not supposed to the the problem (unless you're getting a cheap knockoff one) but the power output of your charger can be an issue as well. The original Evo 3D charger outputs the proper power for the adapter to charge your phone properly. If you're using a cheap generic brand eBay MicroSD power cord, it will most likely not charge at the same output.
I've been using and testing these adapters before you ever knew about them. Is that enough information for you?
Went to a friends after work an just got home a little while ago. Battery is at 15% so instead of putting in a freshly charged battery, I'm going to test my T-Mobile MHL Adaptor for those interested. Hope to post results tonight, definitely going to test tonight though even if results aren't posted until the morning.

@LiquidSolstice What the heck's a "cheap generic brand eBay MicroSD power cord"? Did you mean microUSB? So much for your expertise... Dunno what you're going on about, but the MHL adapters could very well affect the current fed to the phone since it's literally going THRU them. Have you tested every single MHL adapter? Even if there's a spec they should conform to, it doesn't mean they all do, just like all chargers out there are not 1A chargers with properly shorted pins to deliver 1A.
The concerns you quoted and dismissed were valid, no need for that attitude. The USB cable used shouldn't really matter in the vast majority of cases, resistances introduced by even the thinnest retractable cables are pretty much negligible... I've actually tested that too. It really comes down to the charger, and possibly the MHL adapter that's in between. If mike hasn't posted his results with the T-Mo adapter tomorrow I'll test mine as I have the same one. Can't speak for the MP adapter as I don't have it, MP usually sells quality cables & adapters tho.

So much for my expertise? Tell you what. Remove the MHL adapter out of the question. Try to charge the phone using a Samsung Moment power cord. It's all MicroUSB as you say.
It won't properly charge. Just because a power cord has a plug on one end a MicroUSB on another doesn't mean they're all equal. The point that I'm responding to is that unless you're buying a knockoff MHL adapter (or a really, really cheap one) the spec specifies that they all charge from both USB and AC, and that there is enough power to properly charge the device.

Amaze Micro HDMI compatible cable?

Hey guys.
Long time G1/G2 user here...just cashed in on the Valentines Deal from T-Mobile and picked up the Amaze.
The associate @ the store here in Wilmington informed me that the Amaze has video out via micro HDMI...and same battery charger as the G2...?
My G2 charger seemed to work in the car, but after opening the one that came with the phone when i got home, I saw it looked a little different.
This was after I was all excited to hook up the phone to my Vizio LCD tv via a micro hdmi cable from newegg, but it didn't seem to want to fit properly. Is there a special cable I need or adapter require to hook up to a TV?
Thanks
You need a mhl adaptor

As stated, you need an mhl adapter for hdmi output.
As for the charger, it's a proprietary port on the phone, but it will also work with a traditional microusb cable.

Anyone have any first-hand experience using a proper MHL adapter for the Amaze? I'm very interested in buying one but have seen mixed reviews from this one: http://www.amazon.com/iKross-Jetstre.../dp/B005JZX5LC
I've seen other results on Google but no one really comments on having tested it with their Amaze. I've read reports of people using the HTC MHL adapter on their Evo 3D, saying the video looked pixelated. Has anyone found or used an adapter that worked well?
you can be the guinnea pig.
Hehehe, I'm hoping other guinea pigs who have tested will share!
Thank you guys for responding....appreciate it
I have used an MHL adapter
The one I have is from Tmobile. It works, but I just don't see the practicality of it. I used to have the G2X that required that micro HDMI to HDMI. That just required one cable. This time with the MHL adapter you need to not only have to have the MHL adapter, but you also need a normal HDMI cable and a MicroUSB plug to power the device. Without either you wont get any picture. It works like normal and honestly I don't see any difference between the picture of the Amaze with their MHL adapter and the picture of the G2X with their microHDMI. It works great, but the only set back now is the amount of cables needed for this feature now.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the adapter. Could you comment on the picture quality? Does a 1080p movie look 1080p on the TV?
Based on threads here and elsewhere, I found the HTC AC-M500 12-pin adapter (the correct one according to HTC), featuring their proprietary ExtMicro USB plug. I'd tried a generic 5-pin MHL-HDMI adapter from Overstock.com, and sometimes it would work, sometimes not. (I later determined that this was probably the fault of the Dell 24" monitor I have at work.)
There are 7 extra pins in the connector that I frankly don't know if they do anything; in prior threads someone identified them as supporting composite video (yes you read that correctly), stereo audio and a MIC. But the plug fits great, and on a Samsung 27" LED HDTV, the video looks as crisp as you'd expect. Is it worth $30+? Depends upon how often you want to use it. I hope to do presentations and playback with it.
If you want some detailed pics, look to my images posted to WikiCommons.

I'm not sure if it's the player of the Amaze that makes it less appealing or if I just encoded it wrong or if it's the limitations of the picture transfer itself, but it doesn't look "perfect" so to speak. Sometimes there's even a little audio delay that for some reason is more visible on the TV than it is on the phone. It still looks good and I imagine that if the right settings for video encoding come out it will look great, but don't expect BluRay quality from the phone.
I found that my Amaze has trouble playing 1080p without a stutter ... but it does that on the device as well as the external display. I guess those of us who want to do this regularly need to upgrade to the Edge/Endeavor this summer.
The MHL cable I had for my Sensation 4G works for the Amaze, I tried it out last night it worked with no problem.
Important question, when using a typical 5 pin MHL adapter, does the phone transmit audio over HDMI as well?
Along with that, if not, does the 12 pin adapter transmit audio? Thanks guys.

Check Wikipedia for references on MHL ... my reading was that it was just mobile high-definition link ... that is, a way of getting hi-def video and audio OUT of the device, not networking IN some peripherals.

I agree. The HDMI connection on my G2x was a lot more simpler. One cord. I am considering being a guinea pig when I get my pay check in a week....
I purchased one of these from amazon.com it works perfectly, but I do agree, microHDMI port would def. be preferable to the extra cord + adapter...

Funny, that thread was the first suggestion in the "Here are similar threads we found:" dialog when I created this thread.
Anyways, my question is pertaining to the last couple posts in that thread. They were talking about the official HTC AC M500 12-pin MHL adapter. I know it's the official MHL adapter for the Amaze, but what I'm wondering is why I'd spring for that adapter, when for just a bit less, I can get the official HTC AC M490, which is the 5-pin version? Not only is it cheaper, but it'll work with any phone that has a standard 5-pin USB/MHL port.
If you've tried the 5pin then you know that it disconnects almost all the time. Plus the charging while plugged in doesn't work too well. I have the 12pin and I don't have to sit there with a steady hand while connected to the tv and don't have to worry about the battery discharging while watching a movie from my sdcard. I prefer quality over quantity.

Yeah, I haven't tried any of them. I guess I've not had any problems with standard 5-pin usb charges staying in place, but perhaps the MHL adapter causes more strain on the connector. If I get the 5-pin it'd also work for my girlfriend's evo3d.... choices
It will work if the EVO 3D uses mhl. Don't get me wrong the 5pin will work but you will start to get really frustrated if the plug or phone or table is slightly moved and you lose connection. Lol

Yeah, the evo3d has MHL, but only the standard 5pin plug.
I use a 5 pin your right about the charging watched a movie plugged in the whole time batt was at %20 at the end. Wrong about the connection though you must of had a bad one. I can pick up the phone wiggle it around and never loose the picture.

What I have found out regarding which is the proper adapter, and you are correct it's the HTC AC500 12-pin Ext-USB to HDMI MHL adapter (its the same MHL adapter that the HTC Flyer tablet uses). The micro "Ext-USB" connection and the fact that its twelve pins instead of a 5 pin connector do indeed make a difference in terms of functionality, quality, and performance. Although, that not to say that other MHL adapters with 5-pin connectors like the HTC AC490 adapter won't work on the Amaze, cause they do in terms of displaying video on your TV. However, the 5-pin adapter wont charge the unit while its plugged in, even if you have an MHL adapter that has its own AC power source. According to HTC that is the case at least, and from reading other comments, I assume that HTC isnt bullshitting.
I was also told by the HTC rep via email, that when you use the HTC AC500 12-pin Ext-usb MHL adapter, it actually allows the Amaze 4G to open up or enable a feature where the phone acts more like a playback remote for viewing videos and photos, and so basically it doesnt only just mirror image the display you see on the devices screen on the TV (in other words, it enables an app where you can select the file you wanna view from the app on the Amaze, and then you can use your phone to control the playback of the videos/files etc). I also found out, not only does using the correct MHL adapter enable some pretty cool functionality & features, it also will greatly improve the HD image and sound quality being sent to your TV. All the while, the 12-pin adapter will charge your phone in the process ...
For some people, I guess, those additional features and the improved image & sound quality won't be a deciding factor for them, and will go for the cheapest adapter they can find on eBay. For me however, I'd personally rather spend the additional $20-30 for the official HTC AC500 12-pin adapter.
... Only problem now though is, I can't for the life of me seem to find them anywhere, but you can get them direct from HTCs webstore. Only problem is HTC doesn't operate their official online Accessories Store in Canada ... and neither the US or nor the UK stores will ship items here. Poo

Hey, since you use the 12-pin adapter ... correct me if I'm wrong about what I wrote above. I don't have any 'hands on' experience using one, so I'm only going off what I have heard.

eBay has the DC T500 for $9.99 or two for $17.99.

Sorry, I don't browse the accessories to often. But to answer your question. It does have a different feature...only on stock. It seems some roms remove the feature. But its no biggie. It still plays really good HD.

Which ROMs Support?
couldnt ever get the 5-pin to work with my Sensation before & now on either my Amaze or Flyer (but i know it works cuz it does on my bros One V) so im selling it....picked-up a 12-pin from fleabay for $15
my ? is, which ROMs will support this feature (or which ones do not)? im using EnergyROM with the Amaze & OneXXL with the Flyer
update: 12-pin working great without the need for power to be plugged-in. sold the 5-pin OEM Adapter [73H00394-00M] for the same $20 i bought it for so ended up making $5 out of the whole thing

Menotek MHL adapter
I'm late to the thread but I thought I'd add my experience with a similar MHL adapter. I got one by Menotek from Amazon [sorry, can't post links yet]. Short story is that it works, but far for perfectly:
- it does not charge the Amaze while it is connected to my TV via HDMI
- if you unplug it and plug it back, it will not detect the phone and TV connection anymore. I need to restart the phone in order to re-establish the link
- it works great for low res graphics such as youtube, fpse (PSX emulator)
- it sucks for hi res such as netflix movies
While my main use for this MHL adapter is to play PSX games on my phone on by big screen TV, I am disappointed that it doesn't give high quality video from my netflix app.
I wonder if I should buy the aforementioned 12-pin MHL adapter which is also available from Amazon. Does anyone have personal experience with this adapter on their Amaze?
I got mine off ebay for about 8 dollars and its never disconnected on me, I can even play games on it... works great!

Dont remember which seller they were one of the top rated sellers though and the mhl adapter supports 25-75hz. It was just one of the many 8 dollar ones on ebay... Idk how many pins it is, its just a regular micro usb port that plugs into the phone and it charges. Never acted up on me on stock on and still works fine on Speed Rom 7.8. These new postings for mhl adapters on ebay for 8 dollars claim to be capable of outputting 3D but in reality that is a requirement of 120hz. I don't know if I can believe that (well maybe it can output 3D but not good 3D video)
I havent tried netflix on my phone to the tv yet, last I remembered the quality wasn't that great even streaming to a phone and watching family guy... Is there anyway to adjust or even trick net flix into streaming higher quality for tv use?
I just got a Sanoxy MHL cable and it works great I have a USB to micro USB from my computer plugged into it and the phone charges faster than it drains. I tested disconnecting the phone from it and then reconnecting to see if the TV would pick it back up and it did. I had Bluetooth GPS and WiFi going while running a linux rom over the TV browsing the internet for about a half an hour and my battery percentage was even higher when I was done.

How well does the battery hold up with local video, streaming, gaming?
I haven't been doing much gaming lately and I don't have netflix anymore and the only videos I have on the phone are short clips for showing friends, so I'm not sure but if I get Netflix back or decide to game out on this thing I'll let you know.

Good MHL to HDMI cable?

With the news of XBMC coming to Android I feel I gotta invest in one of these cables hahaha. Anyone test any out yet? I see a bunch on amazon but I'd like to hear from someone who has the same phone.
Picked up a PNY for $10 haven't had any problems....

Is it cutting out at all? all of the ones I found on amazon have at least a couple people saying that they cut out every once in a while.

Mine has never cut out. And is pretty much lag free. Just wish I could say the same for the medialink HD.

Just wanted to reiterate here. Bought three of these, used em with 4 HTC phones, work great, no problems.
The ones they sale at the TMobile store work good also.
Another +1 for the Monoprice link..
Ya just ordered it. Thanks!
get the media link from HTC. It's around $50-70 but it is wireless and has an hdmi port on it. Supports 1080p and it reflects the phone entirely on the tv.

YES.
According to the description on the monoprice site, the adapter has a micro-USB charging port on the side of the adapter.
I bought this one from Amazon since I have prime:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006V7F380/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
I have to have the regular usb power cable plugged into it for it to work with my TV and that charges my phone.
So it can also function as a 6ft power extender for charging if you don't use the HDMI part.
Happy with it for the price.
I have the HTC MHL adapter and I'm getting CRAZY lag when I play video games. I'm thinking it's sense, but I'm hoping it's the adapter.
Can any of the guys who bought an MHL cable try playing an nes/snes/genesis emulator while plugged in to the TV?
ya I'm getting a bunch of lag while playing HD video and audio cutting out with the Monoprice
update: seems that was a player issue? Was using MX player. Now I'm using Dice and and no lag.
monoprice....got that and a bright yellow hdmi cord for dirt cheap.
Anyone knows if those cables work on AOSP roms (cm10)?
