Uneven Screen Coloring? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

On my SGS2 I have noticed that at lower brightness levels on solid dark colors (such as the notification bar being pulled down) that my bottom right corner seems lighter than the rest of the screen. Does anyone else notice anything like this?
Too bad I rooted my SGS2 last night so mine has an exclamation point that will make it hard to take back to AT&T. Luckily a USB Jig I bought off ebay is coming to cure that problem soon....

This is a known issue related to the 4.3" SAMOLED Plus screens. See this thread for the international device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079444

Thank you very much for the response. When I think about it my plasma is the same way.
Apparently the Int. SGS2 has some third party kernels that fix this problem by recalibrating the colors. I hope eventually we get the same.

[Q] Blue tint problem?

I was in the o2 shop today playing about with the Galaxy S2 and I noticed that if I angled the screen slightly, everything would get a blue tint to it. This was most noticeable when there is a lot on white on the screen.
Is this a common problem with the new handset, as I remember reading a similar thing with the older super amoled panels?
I loved the phone, but was put off by the blue tint.
Thanks.
I've actually noticed this myself with a phone I bought from phones4u (avoid them at all costs). It's very odd I thought for SAMOLED since I thought they're not meant to have viewing angle issues like LCD and my old, original Galaxy S certainly doesn't have this issue. Also noticed slightly yellow whites. I got another SGSII from o2 (with bad GPS issues) that had a better screen but I must say - the evenness was a bit off and that was a big surprise given the SGSII is meant to have SAMOLED+ which is technically "better".
I'm beginning to think a bad first batch - i.e. rushed manufacturing.

Even though its supposed to have good viewing angles, its not supposed to be extreme like the iphone 4, there still will be a point with samoled that you will start to see a little distortion.. The blue tinge is on the first galaxy phones too, its something that is inherent with samoleds... You want to worry when you have the screen on full brightness and you see any yellow... But you will see the whites go a bit yellow when the brightness is low. samoleds have their own DNA and everyone is made differently. I do not think this batch was rushed at all, i actually think this is a better first batch than the first Nexus S batch, there was returns flying back from everywhere. I had 4 different NS myself..
I have also gone through 3 SGS2's but rightly so, two had a low hepatic feedback and press area on the back button and one had the piss yellow screen of death
But it worked out better for me because I returned the P4U one for 530 and bought an O2 one for 399. So faulty phones really do save you money;P
JD
Very strange. I have ordered one from o2 online to be delivered in 30 days time as I have already got a contract with Orange that doesn't run out for 2 months and I wanted to take up the discounted line rental offer thats running at mo.
Hopefully most of the problems will be sorted by the time I get mine
P.S. I wouldn't use Phones4U either. Heard quite a few horror stories about them.
Anyone else noticed a blue or yellow tint ?
Thanks

The one I played with today had quite severe blue tint with minimal movement of the handset.
Have yet to see what the yellow tint is like.
I'm sure I read in a review that Samsung have put in an option to change the colour balance on the Galaxy S2 ?
I hadn't noticed this until you stated it in this thread, and to be honest I can only see it when there's a white background. Personally, I don't think there are issues that detract from the user experience, and that's all that matters!
The Samsung Galaxy S II is still by far the best phone in the market right now.

Yes they have,
There is 3 presets,
One is like a nexus s pre 2.3.3 colour, and one is a post nexus 2.3.3 and one is somewhere in the middle But what your seeing is something not linked to the colour balance, your seeing what is a screen defect. But a blue hue is quite normal and not so off putting as a piss yellow hue The blue hue was desirable on the galaxy S. The iPhone 4 will have better white replication than the samoleds due to that its a LCD screen, But the blacks will always be better on the samoled

Check my topic " different screens??? or what is this???" here in de Q&a. You see 2 different sgs2 next to eachother, one with blue tint, other not.
Mine has the blue ish thing too, but to me it seems more like a coating?
Last night I lifted my Phone from my desk on low battery and the screen went very strange and turned to a completely washed out green/blue colour. I hit the lock button and then unlocked again and it all went back to normal. Very strange.

I have noticed this on the Galaxy s2 I was looking at in the store yesterday.
If I tilted the screen only about 15-20 degrees whites would appear blue. It realy put me off.
That was the only model they had there though, so I could not check if it was a defect specific to that one piece.

Just a suggestion: it could be due to the gorilla glass. Could be a refractive property when viewed at an angle.

I have just purchased this handset on o2. Much better in the hand. I have a slight blue tint, but no other defects that I have noticed yet.
Am loving it so far.
I only have KE2 on my handset. Kies says its the latest version, but I have been reading about KE7?
Can someone point me to the correct thread please. Am very new to Android so haven't a clue really lol.
Thanks.

My replacement screen exhibits the same issue. Except mine becomes apparent while only tilting the phone 3 degrees or more off centre.
[edit] I can't post video links yet, but if you search "Galaxy s2 screen tint comparison" on YouTube, the first 20 seconds of the video highlights the issue.

[Q] circular spot on the screen

i just bought my galaxy s2 today , but i noticed a strange circular spot on the lower right side of the screen, it is visible in gray or other dark background and is not affected by the brightness settings. should i get it replaced
Hard to be certain without a photo, but it sounds like a mark from the suction cup used to attach the screen - a few people have reported this, unfortunately. There are photos somewhere in the forum, can't seem to find them at the mo...
If so, yes - return it immediately.
i cant post a pic because im a new member, but thanks for the rep

sai4u - From another thread, suction mark in top right. Look like yours?
yes, i have the exact same problem
Shame. I'd return it, definitely.
Same issue, white circle in the lower right side of the screen, size of a coin, visible only on a grey background, just like the yellow left side issue. Doesn't bother me in real life usage, but still...
il get it replaced immediately, many thanks for the reply

I too have this same problem unfortunately, I asked for replacement but currently phones out of stock here, Waiting for new stock Impatiently.
Was it easy for u to get it replaced ?
my friend got it. hopefully she can get a new one.
Mine is not this prominent though, I dont see it on such dark backgrounds...God knows how many pieces have it, and the fate of replaced piece.
Could be a remnant from production process and oleophobic coating. Glass parts are mostly transported by suction cups and this might leave this "mark" ...........
i also have a light spot on my phone which appears on gray or slightly dark backgrounds. it's on the left side. it does not appear to be the same thing as the one on previous pictures. it's as small as a dot which can be made by a marker.

Maybe you are talking about the white spot in default internet browser. It is located in the left lower corner. It is normal and it's there for hardware acceleration. Check to see if you have dead pixels, if the white spot only appears in default browser than your phone is ok.
mine appears all the time (provided that the background colors are gray and of the same shade). also, the spot is on the top-middle portion (portrait mode) of the phone. example, it reading SMS conversations, background is gray right? i can see the light spot there. i would post a picture but i'm still new to the forum.
Hi.
Mine have that exact circle too =/ .
So, you say it is not burn in ? i was thinking maybe that was because the weather widget sun.
Since im out of warranty i m thinking in open and cleaning it, what do you think ? would be that possible ?

It's a hardware issue, not a dust one.

[Q] Blue Tint on Top Left of Screen!!!

hey guyz
ive been using my S2 for a month now!
Yesterday i noticed on a plain white screen @ full brightness a blue tint on the top left side of my screen.
Does anyone else have this problem ? Is it a Problem ?
Thanks
nikoceballos
Yes, I have the same trouble... blue tint over left corner... its not very annoying, but its there... not correspond to a top smartphone... I think its hardware. I'll let you know when I take it to warranty...
Have it replaced, the S2 is quite known to have some screen quality issues.
Guys, same here... Very annoying while reading a book...
@nikoceballos : Any luck with sammy?..
I have the same problem, once i noticed it, it became annoying when reading documents, I've contacted the agents to get it replaced, awaiting their answer.
Its definitely a hardware issue, the agents first tried to convince me its normal by showing me another Galaxy S and SII phones that have it.
Blue tint on top left
Same issue here yaar...blue tint on the top left...Not that much annoying but yaa its there...otherwise performance is superb..plz post a solution if somebody finds any...i wont go for a replacement since i heard as replacement they wont give u a sealed new piece....
thanks and regards

[Q] Does your S9+ whites shift red at an angle?

So I'm well aware of the AMOLED tech and that there is always some sort of a slight blue shift at an angle. I'm, honestly, completely fine with this. What is bothering me is that when my device is tilted it shifts slightly red before shifting blue. That happens at about a 30 degrees angle or so.
I saw somewhere in another thread around here that someone measured the whites to be calibrated at 6500K which is a bit yellow-ish than most LCD screens. In all honesty, though, my eyes can get perfectly callibrated to that temperature and if I haven't seen a bluer screen in a while I start perceiving the whites on the S9+ as perfect. And here's where the slight red shift just before the blue one starts to really bother me. For some odd reason, especially at night when the room is completely dark, this slight hinge of red completely decallibrates my eyes and when I get back to looking at the display straight-on whites appear to be very yellow-ish for a while. And getting into the red shift zone (about 30 degrees tilt) is actually rather common whilist handling a 6.2" inch device.
So do you experience a slight red shift before the blue one when you tilt your S9+ and if so - does it affect you in the same manner as it does affect me? I'm really curious as to whether I have an outlier display or this slight red shift is actually the norm across S9's and it's just me who has to suck it up eventually and just move on. Thank you for the input!
I had three s9+ devices and all of them had the exact same thing that you've described, so i'm pretty sure it's a common thing across all of the devices and therefore it shouldn't bother you
Is that an issue? Possibly all have it.

That's what I'm asking. So far only one person has responded, though. Is that so hard for people to just answer with a goddamn "yes" or "no"... :/
My first S9+ had a more pronounced blue shift but didn't shift pink before it shifted blue. Unfortunately, they had mistakenly sent me a single SIM variant even though I ordered a dual one. Second one was the correct variant but I noticed that it shifted red so I got the best of my 14-day return window and sent it back. My third one was similar to my first one and nothing in it really bothered me but as it turns out it had a dead pixel right in the middle of the display - somehow it took me 4 days to even notice it but once I did I just couldn't cope with it. So now I'm having my fourth S9+ and it's the same red shift right before it goes blue, just like the second one. I'm just trying to understand how common is the red shift because I'm this close to returning this phone as well but at the same time don't want to put the retailer through any more crap as I already returned 3 phones. It's actually an issue for me, even more so than any black crush or whatnot else. It's just that if I see a lot of people having similar displays that it might actually help me cope with it and move on until my next purchase somewhere in the future.
mine does and that's perfectly normal
Yes

My issue is the always on display. The clock has a pink hue to it. I've only hady S9 plus for about 2 months. Weird part is my girl got hers at the same time and hers has it also. It's very annoying. On top of that if I go to an all white screen mine has more pink than hers. I tried a painful factory reset and it's all the same.

It might be because of the wallpaper you're using
The clock (at least on the lock screen) will always have the same coloring and shading to it as the wallpaper
So maybe that goes for aod as well? Not sure because I'm not using aod, but it's worth a check

Uneven black levels

Anyone else having this issue? When I switch to the dark mode it's obvious the black level from one corner to the other is not the same.
A black saturation test clearly shows the bottom row visible when the device is rotated one way and then not visible the other way.
Anyone else getting this? I'm going to ask for a replacement.

Damn, that's almost exactly the same.
I just got a full refund for mine as the shop I bought it from had no stock for a replacement. Another one on the way from another retailer, hoping the display is in better shape.
The quality control on these appears to be a bit crap.
OneUI uses dark grey on the Tab S and Note10... There are many, if not infinite variations of grey that approach black. I do art, so it's easy to notice that #000000 was substituted.
SD_black is black, OneUI simply has a dark mode. Also black cannot be uneven on OLED, because black refers to an off state.

You're just splitting hairs.
Black can appear uneven on defective OLED displays. If you use a black saturation or black clipping test you can clearly see with the tablet or phone rotated one way that the bottom row is barely visible (which is normal), but rotate it another way and suddenly they're all clearly visible, they're only visible because that part of display is defective.
I have OneUI on my phone as well, there is no visible banding and black/gray levels (whatever you want to call them) are uniform. If you're seeing any variation then you got a bad display and you should get it replaced.
Similar here. But mainly noticeable in very low brightness especially with night mode on

Display tester, first match on the play store. Find the black saturation test
Or you can use something like the below, loads of similar tests available on the Play Store or online.
https://www.avforums.com/threads/ho...el-on-oled.2204710/#lg=thread-2204710&slide=0
Replacement arrived today and it's even worse than the first one, instead of one corner it's right down the centre of the display.
Also found an easier way to highlight the issue, using the image tester select the burn in test and move all the sliders to the left, this should give you black. Then slowly move the green slider over, you'll notice some parts of the display become green when the rest remains black, at least up-to a certain point. Took the image below in good lighting.
The Amoled lottery. I had to go through many returns before I got a Tab S3 that didn't have unacceptable display uniformity and things don't seem to have improved a lot since then.
I guess that it's cheaper for Samsung to deal with the returns of customers who notice and care about this than simply having better quality control in the first place. Reviewers of course get cherry-picked samples so the quality of the display can be praised to high heaven.
Really makes me think twice about even considering upgrading though...

I'm doing this through Amazon,
I did call Samsung support hoping to speak with someone and they basically just said take it to a Samsung store, I'd rather not waste time with that, they'll just pretend they've never seen the issue before and send me back to retalier for a replacement.

But since this is a common issue maybe manufacturing level, I rather leave it like this, because I do not want to end up with an even worse one.

hi
hours ago i found that when a blank tab is opened in samsung internet (i am using dark mode in system as well as the samsung browser) i could see the uneven black on the screen. i tried to rotate it but still the uneven black was there on the left and right hand sides in landscape mode, and on the top and bottom after i rotated it. so it should not be the ui or one ui problem
i remembered i have read this post so i revisit it and found many of you have the same problem. when i bought this tablet i have check via *#0*# to see how the black was and it's perfect. i also checked with *#0*# before replying to this post and the black was perfect too!
i am too wondering what could be the problem. i think it could be the dark mode which does not use true black (pixel off) in fact

Yeah, It's not the dark mode, this issue effects everything.
If it was just One UI I could ignore it, but sadly it's not. Essentially you have different parts of the display clipping at different black levels, even the sections that are relatively good still look patchy.
Samsung screwed us all but it's OK because it's not a popular product so nobody cares, prime example of how useless reviewers are as well because none of them picked up on it, cherry picked parts from Samsung probably.
