Do you have to have installed one of the kernels, like CWM, from the dev section to get into recovery? With the captivate you could get to the stock recovery with most phones out of the box. Is that not the case with this phone? I am stock (for now) but was just wondering because I tried to get to the recovery screen and can't seem to do it...
Edit: nevermind. Please delete.
Mine goes into recovery without a problem and still completely stock. Vol up/down and power button. When the SGSII screens comes on, release the power button.

Im about to give up. I can get recovery thru adb, quick boot app, rom manager, etc. I still have yet to boot recovery manually. I want to be ready for cm6, which means I need a manual recovery method in case my vibrant freezes up or bootloops so I can restore backup. I've tried every vol-up vol-down combo I could find. Still, after 2 weeks, no manual recovery. I don't want to go back to the unrooted life, but without a manual recovery method, I dont want to chance freezing up. Is there any other method of getting to recovery if the phone freezes up after flashing a rom?
I don't see how that's even possible... Just to make sure you are:
1. Turning off the phone
2. Holding the two volume buttons down
3. Then pressing the power button along with the volume buttons until the "vibrant" logo comes up, goes away and comes back and then letting go of all buttons...
It's pretty easy to do it... But if you did that and you are still getting nothing I suggest you do a factory reset and try again...
If not, try and take it in to a T-Mobile store... This is a function all stock phones should have, and if you can't go into it, that's a defect.
I hold my phone horizontal when powered off.
Both thumbs on the volume rocker.
Press and hold power and volume buttons.
When the Vibrant logo comes up, release power, keep holding the volume rocker.
I've never had an issue. It does seem like a lot of new posts popping up with this issue though. I use Quick Boot now that I am rooted. I also use Clockwork Recovery too.
There's definately a problem with some phones. I had one that wouldn't boot to recovery or download using the buttons. I took it in and swapped it out, and when I tried the new phone in the store I got it first try. It's just not that tricky to do.
Well, after another whole day of research and attempts, I give up. Sending the phone back and tmobile is shipping me another. Only problem is I cant try it out for recovery first. Hope this one works out.
I just rooted my Samsung Vibrant and the guy who rooted it put Froyo 2.2 rom on it. When I try try to boot into recovery using rom manager or 3 button , the green clockwork recovery does not work. The buttons do not do anything and I have to get my cellphone charger out just to get it to log out of recovery. How can I fix this. I was thinking of using SGS kernal flasher and flashing the voodoo kernal. Then going from there. The green recovery is all that shows up. And it does nothing you can't click on any of the buttons. How can I fix? Thanks
So you did flash the voodoo kernel with kernel flasher app? or you havent yet?
Either way, I would almost want to say that if you are having that kind of issue, it might be beneficial to just go back to stock with ODIN (flashes completely to stock), then look into putting a rom on yourself. it sounds like you already know how to in a sense.
and when you say you cant click anything, I'm going to assume you dont mean touching the screen, but you are using the volume up and down to scroll and power button to select it, right?
just wanted to ask to make sure you know you cant use the touchscreen there. You probably already know this though, so sorry if my assuming made an "ass of u and me" hahahaha love that joke
ps. also try posting in the Vibrant forum on the main forum screen ( http://forum.xda-developers.com ) rather than just general.
Help fixing phone.
when I am in the green recovery none of the buttons work, I can't use the volume buttons, or the camera buttons, none of them work. It's like it's there but you can't do anything in recovery. I was thinking of using the sgs kernal flashing and flash voodoo, then I think I can use the voodoo clockwork recovery to flash a new rom, or reboot. It does not matter if I use rom manager, or I hold the two volume buttons down, it's both green. I don't even need to push the power button, just holding the two volume buttons boots me into the green recovery. then I am stuck and the only way out of it is too hook up the charger and turn the phone off and it will go back into regular mode. If I don't hook up charger your just stuck in recovery with no way out.

Do you know how the guy rooted it? What kernel he flashed, if any?

Sounds like something was flashed wrong or was corrupt.
What you should do is just boot up your phone and get "Titanium Backup" app to backup your apps (only 3rd party ones, not stock ones)
1. Then plug it into your computer and copy over some files like the titanium backup folder, your contacts, pics, videos, etc.
2. Then use ODIN v 1.7 to flash back to stock. (its very very easy. its like a one click thing.)
3. Get SuperOneClick Root. its a computer app that roots your phone. (again, super super super easy.)
4. Then choose a rom you like. I'd reccommend going with a 2.2 rom because they are the most reliable at the moment. (I use Trigger Rom 3.1 under the ~~Einherjar Dev Team~~ section in 2.2 roms. very good rom)
5. Flash that rom using the Rom manager / Clockwork recovery mode
6. then of course, plug the phone into your computer and add all your stuff back on and get titanium backup again and put all your apps back on as well
pretty much all custom roms are pre-rooted and de-bloated and everything. so you'd have everything you need.
EVERYTHING you need is in This Thread. that thread has all the links to ODIN, SuperOneClick root, and all roms and the how-to guides!
Do all this, and you will be quite happy with your custom Vibrant
recently soft bricked my new AT&T S2.I have clockwork recovery installed (4.0.0.2), and the only buttons that work are home (goes back to the first menu), volume up/down, and power to hide the menus. I can't select anything at all, it seems like I have the international version of the recovery, not one for the S2.Anyways, I can't get into download mode by holding down the home + Vol up+ power, and Odin can't seem to connect to my phone if it's in clockwork recovery and not download mode.Would the jig work? Or is having no ability to boot into download mode pretty much a killer? I can access my phone through ADB, I just don't know my way around adb as well as I would like.Is there any way to flash a different recovery via ADB? Any other solutions to get my phone up and running again? Because right now it's not booting at all.
EDIT: Managed to get back into the system. It's running the International ROM instead of mine though, so the buttons are wonky. Does anyone know where I can find the ODIN files to flash back to stock AT&T S2?

First off, that's not how you get into download mode. Turn the phone off, hold both VOLUME BUTTONS ONLY, and plug in the USB cable.
With my phone, If I hold down both volume buttons and power on, it goes to clockwork recovery. If I turn the phone on holding the volume up and the home button, it goes to download (now).
I fixed that issue already though, the problem at hand is that I have the i9100 boot and firmware on here, and need the stock Odin files to fix. Can't find the files though. : /

...me too....
WOW DISREGARD - too stupid to realize soft buttons work with CWM recovery. They didn't before...very premature post, my apologies
For the bootloop, I selected Advanced in CWM recovery, and then selected "Fix permissions" then I installed update from SD card. Now it works! Back to being a noob and hating my life.
-----------
I seem to have bricked my phone too...I was using ROM manager to install cm9 update (yeah, I NOW know I should not have used ROM manager). I used ODIN to re-flash cwm recovery enabled kernel. I can go to recovery, but it does not let me select any of the menu options. And when I boot the phone, it still sends me into a bootloop.
One time it did say "signature verification failed" but it doesn't say that anymore, it just doesn't move. I've read around about signature verification issues, but I haven't found anything that gets me anywhere.
I know this is pretty noobish, but I really appreciate any help!
HELP!!! I installed shostock rom that worked well for sometime….however yesterday when I went running, I was listening to audio and at the same time I was using an app called Mapmyrun, The phone then suddenly just died. No matter what I pressed it wouldn’t come on. Eventually it did come back on after I pressed the volume up button along with the power button and the home button together and at the same time putting the battery back in. Since then I can’t make a call without using the speaker and while trying to play audio, the audio sticks. I decided I needed to reinstall rom or even try a new one but discovered the phone will not boot into clock work mod. When I try the phone just goes dead again and I then have to do the whole volume up button along with the power button and the home button together and at the same time putting the battery back in again. How do I get CWM again so I can wipe?
So holding down the power button doesn't pull up the boot to Recovery option?
What version of Shostock are you running?
XWLP7-SHOstock2-v2.2.2
Now I've actually got it to go to cmw by holding volume up and down together while pressing the home button and replacing the battery simultaneously. When Itry to reboot however it just goes dead and I have to do the whole process again. How do I get it to reboot?

What phone do you have?
EDIT: XWLP7? I9100?
You're flashing a I777 rom on a I9100?
Alright, you get closer.
At first you said you lost CwMR, then you described how to get into CwMR a totally wrong way, then you got in CwMR eventually.
I suggest you spend time and read more on those threads created by creepy. He shows you everything from how to get into the Download mode, how to get into the 3e, .......
Also, fundamental thing, do list your device info if you want more useful help.
Back to your stage, you said you got into CwMR successfully, then reboot???
Have you done anything when you got there? reflashing? wiping? ...... or just got there and reboot and did nothing else?
Guys,
I'm rooted, with MDK base, and THOUGHT I had a working version of CWM (maybe 6.0.2.3?)
I was in the process of getting ready to try out a new ROM; going through the usual motions, formatting system, data, cache, and for good measure, I finished with a Wipe Data/Factory Reset (which I believe just does the same things again).
The phone suddenly rebooted and froze at the samsung custom screen. When I try to get back to recovery, I can't (hold down up-vol and power; blue message appears and disappears quickly in upper left, and back to Samsung custom lock screen.
I'm stuck. In the past, I always got into recovery by rebooting with ROM Manager, so I haven't really had to use the power-on/ vol up method (thus it may never have worked).
I can get into download mode. So I'm thinking - assuming - that the first thing I should try is to Odin CWM. But I'm admittedly confused, because all of the posts that relate to installing CWM seem to be in the context of the rooting process, and assume you have the ability to place certain files in rooted directories (like loki), which I obviously can't b/c I can't boot.
1) Is re-flashing CWM the right approach ? If so, is there a .TAR file somewhere with just CWM? I can't find an Odin-flashable .tar. EDIT: I found one, but it's designated for i9505. Same thing?
2) If that's not the right approach (or I'm just an idiot and don't know how to get into a working recovery), please advise
Thanks!
Turn the phone off.
Hold volume up and press the power button until it vibrates.
When it vibrates let go of the power and stay holding volume up until you see the recovery splash.
I've found that sometimes continuing to hold the power button will cancel the call for recovery boot. Not sure why.
You can always Odin if that doesn't work.
And I don't know of an Odin package for vzw recovery.

O - M - G !? Unbelievable. Thanks a BILLION! You just saved me a ton of time.
EDIT: Cr*p. Not out of the woods yet. Now, when choosing 'Install from SD Card' I'm getting 'E: Can't mount /sdcard/'
I'll post this issue in a separate Q.
