Seems they wont give me an early upgrade, so for all of you sgs2 owners is this phone worth that price? I was totally in for $199, and still might be for $549 if its worth it. I've paid more for less.
I just want to hear different opinions from owners here.
Yes it is.. The Best android phone ever... got it three days ago n lovin it...
$520 at Walmart. Plus, you can get unlock code from AT&T while contract customers have to wait until next summer.
Worth or not is very personal thing. It's up to you.

But the one at walmart is an at&t samsung galaxy s2? You can then call at&t and ask for an unlock code and they'll give it to you? Not that I need it unless I take it overseas I guess.
It was definitely worth it to me. But, I have no qualms about spending money on gadgets.
Depends on where you're coming from.
From the Infuse - it's borderline. However I'm leaning towards keeping the S2. I may or may not sell the Infuse depending on a number of factors.

If you paid full price, they owe you the unlock code. I called and got mine the same day.

I had no problem getting an early upgrade. Had my Galaxy for a little less than a year, and got the $199 upgrade Sunday. Of course, it might be because I have 4 smartphones (mine and three IPhone 4s) on my plan. It is the greatest phone I have ever seen! Quick and shiny.......

What did you tell them?
I talked to some customer rep on the phone, maybe thats why. They have me as renewing my contract since January when it was actually November 2010, they messed up and acknowledged it so they waived my cancellation fee. I called them up and explained all this and verified and still didnt want to give me an early upgrade. Wonder if the sales rep at the store could do better for me.

It is not about how many lines you have. It is related on how much you pay for monthly on your line. If you paid over $100/month for your line, you get earlier upgrade than others.
That and AT&T recently moved everyone's upgrade date a few months ahead.

I actually just went into the store to look at the phone, and see if I thought I would want to upgrade when I could. I immediately fell in love, and asked when I would be eligable for the upgrade. Left with the phone!

Since I have a family plan with a total of four lines, unlimited data on my line, family unlimited texting, the charge for my line is over $100. I didn't know that made a difference, but wondered why they were giving me an early upgrade.
Thanks!

Other lines don't count. Only the services you paid for your own line counts. If you have services on your line valued over $100, you get yearly upgrade IIRC.

Just got my upgrade from the SGS for $49.99 through the 'save' (read: cancellations) department with a 2 year extension. Free overnight through Fed-Ex. Thanks, Richard in AT&T cancellations.
Come on, is the Galaxy S II really worth it coming from the Galaxy S (Captivate)? I mean the Captivate is Miui dev supported. The Galaxy S II has an unoffical port which made me walk out the ATT store empty handed.
Things might change in a few months, given that the Galaxy S II could be as popular as the first Galaxy S phone. Then the Miui devs will support the device.

They just discontinued this a few months ago.. and it was not based on total pricing of service. It is based off of the MRC of your rate plan. ($59.99+)
Everyone is now on the 20-month upgrade cycle. If you are the primary line and didn't use your yearly upgrade yet, then that would be your last one. then you'll be on the new upgrade cycle.
be careful if you're still on this old cycle and you have your 1 year upgrade coming soon. if you lower your MRC, your upgrade date becomes laaaater

If have captivate and sgs2 and the difference in response to app and other things is like night and day. Don't get me wrong. I love my captivate, but I love my sgs2 even more. You need to use it then you'll know what I or other are in love with this phone. Just remember, anytime a new phone is launched, no matter it has the best specs in the world, it becomes obsolete.

Getting a new phone for my birthday, on the 27th. I either pick one now or wait for something else, which would be the Samsung Galaxy S2.
Now, if I pick something now, I have no idea what I would get, but I really wanna wait for the Galaxy S2. That being said, I can't get it if it's not coming out for like 6 months, but if it's only gonna be like 2 months, then that's okay.(For US that is...I would buy from UK but price are showing $650+)
As for the price, I don't have any upgrades available, but since it's my birthday, parents will pay for around $150. I start work tomorrow at Target(starting pay at $7.50 too!) and so I hope to save for that, but I don't know if I'll have enough if it's gonna be like $600.
So what do you guys think about the release date and price?
Everything is pointing to within two months
As for a US-Specific version? Who knows. ATT could drag their feet on their model.
The US models are typically cheaper than the international models though- the original SGS was the same way. International version/unlocked rates are $100-200 higher than the Captivate here in the US.

Well, considering it's a quad band device I'm hoping the US carriers don't demand changes.
My captivates screen just cracked(nasty fall) no insurance so i got att retention to give me an early upgrade and have the htc inspire for $75 with a 2 year. I will have another upgrade in april i plan on using for the SGS2 but who knows if it will be out by then. If it isnt then im selling my inspire useing my upgrade on a iphone and then reselling it and bam should have enough for the god of all phones the SGS2.
well thats my plan anyway

I wouldn't waste my time with feature-deprived, carrier-bloat, delayed-updates, contracts, or any of the headaches that come with the US cell carriers.
I will personally never buy a contract phone again. You lose all leverage against the carrier. For example, my family has reduced price cable and free movie channels because we threatened to switch providers.

Heres why i Think contracts give you more benefits and leverage.
they dont want you to cancel in contract or not they will still do the same to help you. ATT bloatwhere is the worst tho.
-Never get angry
-be kind to the rep(treat them how you would like to be treated)
-tell them you dont want to leave att but you dont really have a choice if you cant get your issue resolved.
-if the rep still doesnt budge tell them you want to cancel service. this will get you transfered to the save team a.k.a retention. Now these people have the power.
-once you have retention online chances are you will get what you want and more trust me.
I used to work for att. I know all the ins and outs. Retention department is key. ATT gives credits like nothing. when my captivate just broke I got them to give me my upgrade now instead of july waived upgrade fee(which is BS anyway) and $30 off my bill for the next 6 months (180) not to mention when i left them i had my friend/coworker put the best company discount on my account which happens to be coca cola. so I also recieve 28% off my primary line and I believe a smaller percentage off data planes. it saves me $50 plus every month off my bill. Just gotta know how to work the system. I dont know why they are so generous but i tried doing things like this on my fathers vzw account and they will not budge. I love ATT and wont part with them. I have another upgrade on another line come april this year which will be used for galaxy S2. much rather sign a 2 year and pay $200 over $800 for international version when im gonna just root it and put my own rom on there any way.
If anyone is having trouble with att. PM and I will give you some advice.
they did crack down on the company discount thing tho you do have to show proof i am grand fathered in tho.
ill be happy to help
Err, guys? Has anyone else noticed that Wikipedia lists April 1st as SGS II release date for the US?

I dont think that means anything. 1. April is already listed there since 20th february.

I got my GF an Atrix on release day to replace her Nexus 1. She used it for a week and absolutely hated it (lots of problems) so we swapped it for an Inspire. So far she's fine with that.
We'll know more at CTIA but it may be pretty late in the year considering the previous Galaxy S US version was also announced at CTIA only to be released in July for T-Mobile.
I am guessing 1st week of May. usually 4 to 6 weeks behind Europe They will pay 830 so minus VAT 581 USD
Can't say I'm too surprised, but can a company be more ambiguous about a release?
Many sources are claiming that it will release on Sunday 9/18. I've called 3 different local att stores and my answers ranged from never heard of it to we are restaging our store on Sunday 9/18 for some new phones but the SGS II is not part of it
Commercials on TV are everywhere, Sprint customers already have their hands on it and we(ATT customers) are left with "coming soon" without even a concrete release date.
The phone is already on the verge of being late to the party(been out since May globally) so come on AT&T, and give us some information that is worth something!
Botched? AT&T will release whenever and still sell a ton. Only people like you and me really care when the release date is.
I just called att sales and and they gave me the same old story about keep checking online. I pushed the issue about wanting to talk to a supervisor since I have heard that the stores are stocking them as we speak. He came back on and said he talked to his store manager (confused here as when you call sales they connect you to a store?) and then said his manager confirmed that they are stocking them in the stores but STILL could not give a release date. He said that could mean a few days or a week/s until they receive the release date. I said sprint came out with it today. I also asked about pre-order and he said they are not taking pre-orders. I am JUST AS frustrated as you on this whole fing matter. Just give us a REAL TRUE RELEASE DATE. I am GLAD that I never run att software and don't rely on them for it to be released ever. Well I guess we will see on Sunday. I will probably stop by a local att store today also and push them for info. I will be back once I am able to during my lunch break.

(1) It's AT&T
(2) It's not an Apple product.
Regardless how much potential GS2 can be, AT&T simply won't give a s**t because it will never sell as many as iPhone 5 can be.
Best friend works for AT&T and they haven't got them in stock yet. They haven't heard a release date yet either. I can say that seeing sprint release it has me EXTREMELY anxious for this damned thing on AT&T. He knows how much I want this phone and is going to let me know as soon as they get it in stock.
Okay I am calling MANY ATT stores local to me (at least I have about 18 local stores that I am in the process of calling now. I will continue to update this post whenever I get a chance. I am listing the phone number, whether they say if/when the release date is, whether they say the do/don't have it IN STORE NOW. So far this is the first couple I have called:
EDIT: I called alot of the local att stores and listed them all below. Kind of bummed that none other than 1 said with good confirmation that they hadn't heard of a release yet. Some that say possibly Saturday said that that USUALLY before a phone is released they will get inventory the day before. I had let them know that I had spoken to 611 earlier which told me stores were starting to get stock today for either this Sunday 18th or next Sunday (which was TRUE from my conversation with 611). So I guess ONLY Sunday we will NO FOR SURE one way or another...I had also mentioned what the 1 store told me that they had them. Sorry but I am so excited and upset with the not hearing anything from att.

Same thing happened with the release of the Captivate, T-Mobile got it first on a Thursday and rumors were that AT&T were releasing it that Sunday, no official announcement just a rumor. Went to AT&T that Saturday to ask about it and they said they only had cases for it but wouldn't expect it for another week, went across the street to Best Buy and they had it in stock!!!! Bought it and went back to AT&T with the Captivate in hand and asked to buy the case LOL.
Hopefully I'll have such luck tomorrow, if not then I'll be patient and get it Sunday, but if it's not out then Sprint may have my service!
Its botched because they are a couple of days behind sprint?
The international version has been available for months if you have deep enough pockets.
If you can only afford a subsidized phone, keep waiting.
This is the captivate forum btw. If you bought a captivate on release or since then that line isn't eligible for an upgrade yet anyway.

Well he meant the regular users without a special plan. I bought my Captivate in July 2010but i used my wife's upgrade Contract..... my Captivate Died on Weds so I was forced to use my Mother-inlaw's contract. That is the only reason I have the ability to upgrade to the SGS II if released on Sunday. Other than that I would have 6 more months to wait.
I bought the Captivate, July 17, 2010, I have been eligible for an upgrade since July 18, 2011, YMMV.

Well I got a bit more bad news for us waiting for the S2 on ATT. I just came back from my local Radioshack and a Samsung rep was there. He told me specifically that the Galaxy S II will be launched on AT&T in early to mid OCTOBER!! WTF
I may wait a few more months and see what comes out by the end of the year, they shouldn't have waited to release this on ATT this long!
Ok so at&t giving special treatment to some customers and giving them more than 1 upgrade per line every 2 years is just one more reason to dislike them as a carrier.
Why does at&t not give me special treatment? I have 4 lines on my family plan and also u-verse tv service.
Playing favorites is a sure way to piss some customers off.

Thank god I decided to import my phone a week before the first announcement lol. That is just too long of a wait already without having any concrete dates. Makes me wonder if they are really holding it out to be sure it competes with something.
Poor americans. Drunk on credit, heading for a cliff, with the corporate greedheads telling you keep going they've got the GPS heading locked in. Guy above is probably right too with the comments about apple having interests it needs to protect. System is clearly broken. Dunno how, but the volk in europe are getting closer to pushing reboot. For that matter, we all gotta flash a new kernel, yellow triangle be damned!
I found this out a few days ago but thought it deserved a thread. So I went to my go to at&t Guy at my store near me and when he tried to look up full retail pricing, he found out that the Note will only be available to purchase by adding two years to your contract. They will not be offering it to be purchased out right at first. He said they do this sometimes when they have an exclusive on a phone for awhile. So you won't be able to pick this BEAST up right away without adding two more years to your contract.... oh well I'm still getting it.
Well sorry for any confusion. It appears all the AT&T people I talked to over the phone our idiots and that the store employees were feed the same crap when they tried to look it up for me. Man you would think they would be on the ball. I think they're seriously underestimating this phone like they did in Europe. I hope that doesn't lead to shortages in the states, like some areas had (Norway from what my friend told me). So you can pre order off contract at 649.99. HAPPY SHOPPING FUTURE NOTE OWNERS!!!!
You can always get one of the Bell/Telus/Rogers units that will be hitting the market here in less than two weeks. Same unit (i717) as the AT&T version but without the AT&T bloatware (and possibly without any external carrier branding on at least the Bell version).
I expect you'll see them on Craigslist for $600, shipping to the US isn't that expensive, and unlocking shouldn't be an issue. And places like Negri or Expansys will also be selling them.
Are you guys sure to get an i717 instead a n7000?
That hardware is less for same price, also devs are working on international version.

I was wondering if you could ask your guy a question for me if you get the chance. I live in California and the tax laws here are such that we pay tax on the full retail price of the phone, not the upgrade price -- even if we're purchasing as an upgrade. So . . . if they don't have a retail price yet then are they only going to charge me tax on the upgrade price?

That hardware is less for same price, also devs are working on international version.

I have an N7000, and I don't think the 717 is "less hardware". Same display (most expensive part) same digitizer, same amount of RAM/ROM, same battery, a very close equivalent processor (really, it is, for anyone not running benchmarks all day long), and a better radio that supports both 42Mbs DC HSPA+ and LTE. Plus local warranty and insurance support.
Depends on your priorities, I would think.
i have n7000 and def keeping it, but to the ATT guys that want the i717 your best bet is not rogers in canada.
it will be either bell or telus, both these companys keep their phones unbranded. no carrier stampings on the phone/battery cover.
also ours comes out a week earlier.

Wow thats interesting. I was on the fence about buying outright or adding a 2yr. Guess that solves that!

In answer to my own question, I just got off the horn with AT&T and they told me that they would only charge tax on the upgrade price if it releases with no retail price.
Also . . . is it just me or does every single thread on these forums mentioning the AT&T version of this device eventually boil down to a snapdraggon flamewar rendering the point of the thread moot?
Looking forward to getting a dedicated forum to the AT&T device.

I went through the flame wars when I got my skyrocket. It is a great phone with an S3 processor. I have the international gnote now, but may consider selling my skyrocket for the att version of the gnote (off contract) so I can keep lte which is prevalent in my state.
But yes the threads will devolve unfortunately, even after the forums split. It is much like how every att lte phone forum devolves into a rant about throttling for the lte unlimited plan members and how att is beyond the evil empire...

If it weren't for the insurance thing I'd offer to sell you my i717 so I can buy an N7000 . . . lol. The no insurance thing on the international versions makes me nervous, though. Of course, AT&T's insurance is kind of bunk, too . . . oi

AT&T sales rep here. Thought I would clear some things up.
This phone WILL be available for purchase without a contract. Just not at first because it is currently not on our shelves. With the preorder, it will only be available as an upgrade w/ a 2 year contract for 299.
On launch day when you are able to buy it in-store, you will have the option to pay the full non-commitment price for the phone.
As for this phone vs the international. They're both incredible devices. Nothing changes that. As we have seen with the Skyrocket, this same hardware has incredible potential. Tons of overclocking headroom while staying stable.
I'm very excited to see it show up in our store.

Maroon . . . thanks for the info!
Don't suppose you have any info on the availability through Amazon Wireless? If and we'll they'll pick it up and whether or not they'll be doing preorders?
If I go through Amazon there's no tax and no shipping . . . so that's a plus. BUT . . . I've been waiting for this phone like a crazy person since before the N7000 release so I almost want to bite on the AT&T preorder so I can get it on the 17th . . . with tax and shipping that's going to be over $50 to pay just for impatience, though

You can certainly buy third party insurance for the international GNote. I bought it for 59 for a year and it includes theft and loss.

Where'd you get the ins? I found a few different places but couldn't find any reviews on whether or not they were any good.
Im sure we'll have it available for outright buying at best buy too. Im sure ATTs insurance will have a monster deductible for a replacement, probably $200 like for the skyrocket and vivid. I know it sounds like a best buy plug but out protection is pretty bangin haha but I break a lot of phones so I really see the benefit of no deductible

Ensquared. I could not find any reviews either after a buddy told me about it. He has a claim for a damaged phone and they covered it. Since I bought an International GNote, I wanted to have it covered since I paid $650 for it. The deductible is based on the amount of damage and $75 maximum.
I did a quick search and saw this. Post #6

I am thinking about coming to Verizon. I am on Sprint now with 2 lines with data on both. Because of a recent billing change I can get out of my contract until Saturday, March 10th. Sprint has went downhill in my area over the past year or so, but their prices are still good. I am looking to get a discount of some sort to help deal with the price difference. I will be getting 2 smartphones with data (likely used month to month at first until newer phones come out). I work for a small electrical contractor in a small town so I won't be eligible for a employee discount. Is there any tricks I can use to get a discount? Maybe somebody else's work email or something like that? If anybody knows anything please post or PM me with details/ link to thread/ anything. Thanks
I don't plan on signing a contract immediately because I would like to wait on HTC's next big phone. I have had the Evo3d since launch day and am a smartphone junky, so I don't think I could handle such similar phones for almost 3 consecutive years with no upgrade. I would like to go ahead and sign a contract now, use a used phone in the meantime and have an upgrade waiting on me when I get ready to use it, but the customer sales rep for Verizon said that wasnt possible. If anybody has any input, info, or advice please help me out. I have to swap carriers and get my 2 numbers ported before the end of the day Saturday, or I'm stuck with Sprint for another 14-16 months...That would be AWEFUL!
Thanks!
Can't you terminate your contract with sprint, but just stay on month to month without the contract?
getting discounts here isnt as easy as it was on sprint. i came from sprint, all you needed was an email and you were set. here they want proof of employment or if they use email, they send confirmation to that email from what ive seen. not to your own email. but those are few companies that do that so its harder. lol

No.. What they do is waive the ETFs AFTER you've ported out in a case like this.
Trust me.. they more than pushed me out last month with their attitude about the whole thing.
Sprint did indeed go downhill and while it is cheaper and truly unlimited.. you AREN'T getting what you're paying for anymore. VZWs 3G speeds blow away sprints and let's not even talk about 4G because it's night and day too. Sprint isn't even going to expand their current 4G network (wimax) because of the soured relationship with Clear. Oh and by the way... my 4G works just as fast indoors as it does outdoors. After 9 years with sprint that contract change was the final straw.
Make sure you get in during the double data deal because i'm not sure i would be comfy with a 2GB monthly cap.

unfortunately not. The guy I talked to said I have to be off the network completely by March 10th or I am stuck for the remainder of my contact. I have read that a few were allowed to go month to month and many that had 30 days after they called, but the rep told me it is 30 days from the February billing cycle. I just found out about this today and called right after work. So I have basically 3 days to have my numbers ported over to Verizon or I am out of luck.
Anybody have an account with no discount for 2 lines, 700 minutes, unlimited text, and 2gb(4gb under promotion) on both? If so what does it end up being after all taxes, surcharges, etc? I pay $167.XX on Sprint right now, and really hope Verizon can keep it under $200.
What if you port to att or verizon off contract? Then just port the number back to sprint off contract.

Somehow I think that would be a nightmare-ish idea.. especially if the OP needs his line for work.
If you need to port that quick you'll also need to do an in-store purchase. I think $167 for the package you stated is probably close to doable. You'll also get much more friendly/helpful customer service with verizon. Playing devil's advocate you should also be aware that verizon's mobile to mobile only includes other VZW customers unlike sprints any mobile to mobile.

That sound very tempting to try, but just sounds risky. I know I have read somewhere that if you cancel your contract on Sprint and come back within 30 days that you basically are just on your same old contract again. I maybe wrong, or whoever said it may have been wrong, I don't remember where I read it. But if someone has experience doing something like this I would love to here about it. It would at least get me through until HTC releases a quad core, or s4 based phone.

If you like HTC phones like i do.. just compare the specs of the verizon phones to the sprint phones (htc->htc). You'll see that verizon has much better specs on the phones than sprint too.

The on network mobile to mobile is now problem, because 90% of the people around here have Verizon anyway. The package I put together online was about $173 (before taxes and surcharges) , but I think I had insurance for 2 rezounds for that price.

I have to disagree. My Evo3d is very similar to my coworker's rezound . It has basically the same processor only .3ghz slower, same amount or RAM, same screen size, QHD screen vs 720p (the difference is honestly not noticeable when held side by side) and it came out about 4 months before. Don't get me wrong I really like the Rezound, but I feel it hardly has much better specs, slightly better specs at most.
That's what originally drew me to Sprint, they get the hottest phones first, and low monthly costs. But their service has let me down recently.
Please don't take offense to this post, I mean no disrespect
Well if it's close.. I would say to you exactly what I told my wife when I dropped Sprint. Sprint has done NOTHING to keep my account. They have not done anything with their local infrastructure. They never respond to trouble tickets. Their status quo really sucked bad.
Verizon on the other hand, has done extensive network upgrades and is very responsive to any problem you have.
Has anyone else noticed that AT&T has this phone listed as $440, if purchased off contract, but if you purchase via AT&T Next, it can be had for $340 and you get to pay over 20 months with no interest?
Seems like anyone who is paying for AT&T insurance, with its $200 deductible, should cancel immediately.

Read this article http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/16/4528404/att-next-phone-upgrade-plans-a-huge-ripoff . But to break it down AT&T next just rips you off. You are better off paying full price for the phone. This is what I do, I take a subsidized phone one year than the next year buy off contract. In the end if you do the math it is more economical to use this approach. You should remember when you sign an AT&T contract they assume that you bought a premium smart phone and the subsidy is already built into your account. If you do not upgrade your phone every two years your paying extra, hence why some people like the t-mobile model because it separates the phone cost from the bill. This makes their business practices more transparent, not necessarily better.

Don't even need to read that article to know that AT&T Next is a rip off, for almost every phone offered. The $100 gap in pricing between list price and making the 20 payments (or you can just pay $340 up front), makes the LGOG a different issue all together. If you are paying $10/mth for AT&T insurance, which has a $200 deductible, at $14 months, you hit break even, between buying a new LGOG or getting a refurb replacement under the warranty plan. In this one case, it would be a financially sound idea, to simply plan to buy the LGOG for $340, instead of doing the warranty (if you damage your phone). Note that the price makes it cheaper than the 16GB N4, also (and you get LTE and a removable/upgrade able simcard).
I totally agree att next is a rip off

It's worse than I anticipated. I checked with and AT&T rep (was considering buying a new phone for my daughter) and was told that I couldn't buy via AT&T Next because I didn't have an available upgrade. I asked about contract renewal and was told that each purchase via the plan required a renewed 2 yr agreement. No where in the on line documentation does it state that you must have an available upgrade, for the initial purchase and you must renew your 2 yr commitment, for each upgrade (it's clearly stated in the regular upgrade info). The rep just said "it's in there somewhere".
Actually ditched my LG OG today and signed up for AT&T Next (opened a line on my family plan). Picked up the HTC One, and couldn't be happier. Currently converting it to the Google Play Dev. Edition (international).
Can't wait to have a real solid stable Nexus-equivalent ROM on a beautiful piece of hardware. I was just beginning to love the OG too, but I was forced to stay with stock ROM due to how many phone calls (30+) I receive/make daily for work. The lurking modem issues on ROM's other than stock just made it super impractical.

Most realistic post yet. I love ROMs too but i keep going back to stock as well, nothing like not having to worry about your phone randomly rebooting.
Due for an upgrade. Looking at the G2 and Note 3 when my local ATT store has it stocked! ampeeeddd
