Kernel supports it, don't know about the userland stack. The Market filters out all NFC apps for us so it's hard to test. Know of any simple NFC apps like TagWriter or TagInfo that have APKs available?
Here is nfc task launcher not sure wth it does
http://db.tt/byelHIgC
I'm pretty sure there's an APK of Google Wallet floating around; maybe you could grab it and see if it authorizes you? Rumor has it that AT&T is disabling NFC until it rolls out its own NFC payment partnership called Isis.
There's more to it than that... something is missing somewhere in the framework. Not sure what yet. I tried pushing the following three files from an NS4G ROM to our device and nothing happened:
Code:
./system/framework/com.android.nfc_extras.jar
./system/etc/permissions/android.hardware.nfc.xml
./system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.nfc_extras.xml
Oh, I forgot
Code:
/system/app/NfcGoogle.apk
Gonna try that...
Nope, still nothing. From what I can tell, there should be some NFC settings in Wireless and Networks, and also there should be an NFC service running.
I ran some experiments with Korean firmware on an international i9100 with NFC battery, maybe someone can try the same with with AT&T model? More info in the Korean i1900 thread.
BTW, it didn't work =[ Maybe I'll experiment with AT&T kernel and ROM instead?
Oh, this is interesting - after pushing the above stuff to my system and rebooting, NFC Task Launcher prompted me and said, "NFC is disabled, OK to enable?".
That didn't happen before.
But nothing else happens.
Edit: At least not at the app level - but if I tap an NFC tag to my device I see stuff in logcat! I don't know if that happened without the above files, I'll try tomorrow. Not attaching the logcat as the tag in question is my Citi PayPass card...
Do you have NFC settings under Wireless and network settings?

No, at least not on my device.
It's interesting that the phone reacted to NFC without it "enabled" though. Where can I grab those Nexus S files from?
So does pushing those files enable NFC in the wireless networks menu? Or is that from the nexus s?

NFC settings pic was from my international I9100 when I flashed on Korean M250S/K firmware. Someone with an AT&T SGS2 should try as well, and see what happens.
Maybe it is hooked in the framework.jar xD
I have experience with roms, and that things are done in framework.jar etc.

Well I tried your "Unbrick" ROM and kernel, Entropy, and no real luck getting NFC to work on my phone. Twas quite flaky once I loaded on the AT&T kernel; centre home button and back capacitive button were both temperamental. The back button was rerouted as home button, and home button would do nothing, but then randomly load up the Recent Apps window.
Even tried running AT&T kernel with M250S firmware, but then the phone was even more flaky with that combo; would randomly shut down, and the home and back buttons stopped working altogether. Was a real pain having to reset the phone everyone I navigated into a menu, and couldn't get back out
Would be interested in seeing if your phone reads NFC tags without those SN4G files on your phone.

No, it doesn't enable it in the wireless networks menu, HOWEVER it seems like apps like the one jivy26 posted above can enable it themselves in a kind of "stealth mode" - however it's not fully working. After pushing the above files, what I seem to have is:
The app jivy26 posted now posts a prompt to turn on NFC, and seems to do so, even though it can't be toggled in Settings
The app doesn't seem to do anything else
In videos I've seen, you usually should see notifications when an NFC detection occurs. You don't in this case
However, if you run a logcat, you can see that there is NFC stuff going on when you tap an NFC device to the phone. I'm going to try and find a more "generic" NFC tag to play with so I can post logcats. You can all understand why I'm NOT going to post logcats from my NFC-enabled credit card.
As far as which files I used - I pulled them from the "full CM7 download" link at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1270118

Um, yeah, if you'd bothered to read this thread you'd know that we know that. We're trying to see if we can enable it ourselves without AT&T's help, XDA-style.

If you are on an I9100, I'm 95% positive you will never get NFC to work. It's not just the battery that's needed I'm fairly certain.
I know that if you run I777 kernels on an I9100, it'll have funky behavior with the bottom keys. Same problem happens for I9100 kernels on the I777.
If I'm reading your posts correctly, the M250S does have NFC hardware AND NFC enabled in the firmware. Looks like I need to go pick apart one of their system dumps.
I have a bunch of other stuff I need to do first though (see short-term features list in my Daily Driver kernel thread).
Yeah, NFC is working on M250S and M250K models. Go check out the Korean SGS2 thread, that's how I found out that they have NFC. I think the confusion arises from the fact there are three Korean SGS2 models: S, K and L. Just like how in the US there are different models for different carriers, the same is in Korea. S and K are basically the same, but L is CDMA. S and K models have NFC, while L doesn't, since their NFC payment is tied to the uSIM, which L models don't have.
Sadface for no NFC on I9100...here's hoping something like this eventuates.
Interesting though, that's the Korean SGS2, which already have NFC.
CM7 kang, hope NFC works with it

It may prove quicker for Cyanogenmod than for stock-derived firmwares, due to framework differences.

After the recent GPlay update adding 'Installed' and 'All' categories to the My Apps page, I noticed an odd Korean language app at the bottom of the 'All' section that could not be uninstalled.
The comments on the app were all to the effect of "what is this? Why is this on my phone/tablet?" When launched, the app opens Polaris office. One commenter said the app title translated to "test application", and this occurrence appears to be contained to Asus and Pantech devices.
I've been looking around XDA and other forums and can't seem to find anyone else with this problem.
I think this may be a mix up akin to the problems some Samsung owners were having with an odd Russian app replacing their email client. The Play Store thought the the email client WAS the Russian app and, if automatic updating was enabled, replaced it with the Russian one.
Luckily, I didn't have automatic updating on, so Polaris seems intact. I'm not rooted, so I can't look in /system for evidence that the Korean app is in any way on my device. It also doesn't show up in Settings --> Apps.
So, has this happened to anyone else out there? Opinions: Bug or Malware?
One Samsung owner said clearing the GPlay cache removed the Russian bug. I'll try, and post results.
I'll post more details (screenshots, etc.) once I get home.

Strange App
Hi Sturk91
I have/had one as well called Two Stars???? You could check out the link below as there are other people out there
http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/transformer-prime-help/18807-rogue-app.html
Now subscribed to both threads hoping to find the solution :-S
Same here. I have a Transformer Prime, the app showed up just recently (don't know exactly when, but it was in the last 2-3 days).
The icon looks like an HDD with a magnifying glass, and under the magnifying glass there is a "virus"... So basically the icon looks like that it could be a virus scanner. But searching on Google Play for "TwoStars" only brings up 1 application, something to do with cats.
WTF??? (The people over at transformerforums seem just as confused as everybody else... :S)
EDIT: the app does not show in the "Apps" menü, only in the Play Store, there is no uninstall option, only "Open" (the app does not show in the Apps list under Settings). If I open it, it simply runs Polaris office... Strange.

The icon is a DVD/CD with a pair of AKG headphones. That is AKG's logo on the little heasdphones. I also now have this app. Lets hope it goes away very soon, as I don't like the look of it.
Hi,
yeah, you are right! Thanks for the clarification! I did not notice the writing before. Yes, it's a CD/DVD with the AKG headphones around it.
I also opened a ticket with Google Play Support, hopefully they can bring some light into this matter (ticket #993826613).
Thanks for all the input guys, glad to see I'm not alone.
Reassuringly, the app doesn't require any special permissions to run, so it seems pretty harmless so far.
Here's a shot of the app from the Play Store.

I wasn't able to find it when I searched the store either.
Also, just fyi I don't have 3rd party sources enabled, so it couldn't have been something I accidentally side-loaded.
Tried clearing the Play Store cache, as that worked for that Samsung bug I mentioned earlier, but it didn't work out. I'm not all that worried about the app itself, just that it seems the Play Store has some serious bugs. Hopefully Google will work this out in good time.
Anyone else found a solution?
I am having the same problem... two star just appeared as "installed" in google play. Two days ago it was just hanging out in my "apps history"...today it is installed.
Searched the internet and for the most part, nobody seems to have any idea as to what the app is or what it does. The developers blog seems harmless enough.
The strangest thing seems to be that the app does not come up as a result when searching google play for "twostars."
Oh well. Maybe it will just disappear soon!
I have the same problem. I've been trying to identify it in running apps but no success. I also tried with avast but didn't find anything

What ROMS are all of you running? Stock? ROOTED? I'm running a mostly stock but custom ROM and am obviously ROOTED and unlocked, and I do not show this as being installed. No trace of any wierd apps on my Prime, but I sure am curious to find out what the hell it is!

I'm stock, unrooted at the moment. Does your ROM contain Polaris Office? If not, that might be why the app isn't showing up.
I looked into a couple other problems the Samsung crowd has been having and it seems both the dev and the Play Store are at fault. There were two other similar bugs I found. Both involved the Store mistaking a pre- installed app for a completely different one. In one case, when automatic updating was enabled, the stock video player was replaced after the Store mistook it for a blank test app. The other case was identical: a Russian voicemail app was mistaken for the stock email app.
I am pretty sure that the same thing has happened in our case: the Store thinks Polaris Office is this Korean app. And even if this Korean app is actually present on our devices, its completely toothless when in comes to permissions. So I'm not worried. Google will get this fixed soon. And failing that, one of our brilliant XDA colleagues will find a solution.
I don't use ROMs. Also I turned off automatic updates. There are no special permissions for the app. If that helps...
This occurred on my Acer a500 tablet. Custom ROM has Polaris office, which opens if you click that update. I uninstalled Polaris and the rogue app went away from my market, but I don't like even the thought of that.
Will follow this thread.
Thought I'd check this out and it also seems to be listed on Google Play for me, but "thankfully" not in my installed list on the prime.

Link2SD works fine for me
I'm using latest "light" gapps. The problem with Google Now is not only with the cards but when I search something I can't scroll through the results, only the top part of the screen "moves" when scrolling.
Link2SD does work but I'm not sure why but it makes it a pain to install new apps. Having to reboot phone each time because system process crashed. And must be done each time you install a single app... :silly:

Still the p500 with ROM build1 can't be detected as USB modem (I meant no USB tethering) by Slackware machine. Could you please to fix it? I encountered that bug (?) in all ROM (ICS and JB) I ever have flashed it, but GB (OpenOptimus ROM build 2.202.1)!.
Anyway, your ROM even it's the first built is one of the great JB ROM for obsolete phone hardware. It's almost stable imho. If you can fix mentioned above problem and the camera, it'll be perfect for my daily use!

To make Google Now work, you have to use the version for ARMv6 from this link(from 'Instructions for ARMv6 devices')>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816622 !!! To get the voice work (it will listen to you, but will repeat what you said, but at least you don't have to write what you are looking for) use the workaround: The Voice Search for Google Now app. More details in the link!!! And yes, this method should work on Jelly Bean, not only on ICS. Good Luck!!! :good:
I can't believe how many Developers are blindly adding this stupid Google Now and breaking bluetooth Voice Dialing.
It has nothing to do with how well it was Ported from Jelly Bean.
Google Now breaks bluetooth Voice Dialing.
Please developers make it an option to add it, an option to Remove it or release two flavors with and without.
You are killing a lot of folks that feel bluetooth voice dialup is a mandatory function and renders the phone useless.
Even some Jelly Bean Nexus users are wishing they never took the Jelly Bean update.

I don't think you can just uninstall it.
Otherwise I would.
Things are rewired and need to be rewired back.
Some files include other mods as well.
I have tried.
FYI, you can get Bluetooth Voice Dialing back by going into
Settings->Apps->All->Google search->and DISABLE.
You will lose all Google Now features but at least you can get Voice Dial back over a Bluetooth Headset.

What's your problem. DB13 didn't know the answer and obviously you don't either.
Not sure what ROMs your running. But on some ROMs that Disable feature is greyed out.
On MikLate Rename System/App/Velvet.Apk to System/App/Velvet.Apk_OFF
On superLTE Rename System/App/GoogleNow.Apk to System/App/GoogleNow.Apk_OFF
On MeanROM the Disable works.

SuperLTE is considering removing it and making it optional for similar reasons.
Mikey has made newer releases to help with Google Now battery life.

Yea except 2.9 was before the release that "improved battery life" version. Still 19 hours w/25% left, with medium/heavy usage. Oh yea I forgot, thats terrible battery life.
Mean 2.6 and higher have been nothing but butter, so not really sure what there is to beta test..

Here's a link to a thread that might work as a temporary solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1883895
It says to convert Google Now from a system app to a user app and then it will allow us to use a 3rd party voice dial app without disabling Google Now (Google search app) at all. I tried it on LiquidSmooth jb Galaxy S3 rom and it did let me choose which ever voice dialing app I wanted, but then I had troubles getting the 3rd party apps to use my bluetooth mic over my phone mic. I ended up using the app "Voice Control Full" for $1.99 because it had the option to force sound to a bluetooth device.

My workaround for now is that I just put the voice dialer icon on the first screen and while I have to touch the icon on the screen to activate the dialer, it lets me use my bluetooth headset to speak the name. I didn't want to uninstall google now, because i like the functionality. So hopefully one of these days they'll push out an update that addresses this issue.
After clean rom full install. .everything works google maps pin point's my location... but the direction navigation program doesnt get sat signal. so no directions while drivin...

Does Google maps find your location? Cause the nav is part of that app.
The google maps app finds me where ever I am.. the nav doesnt ever get gps info. It hangs for hours never connecting. Navigation the blue arrow on maps..I get no step by step directions voice. But the map connects I can see destination and directions list..

Try either clearing data from maps app in app manager (the bigger of the 2 files) or uninstalling and reinstallation of maps. Try the first and see what happens.
I cleared google maps.. then deleted app reset phone then reinstall..I get google maps to lock my position but no navigational voice direction..I reasld somewherebto give mapquest a go..and mapquest is winner. ..for the momment

First things first, download gps status and see if you get a lock on some satellites and the data at the bottom refreshes, if not let us know.
which cleanROM? Weren't verizon note 2 users having problems with the univeral cleanROM and GPS? If so, I'd try the verizon specific cleanROM
Gps status no luck.. just hangs looking for sat signal. And its the 4.2 version of clean rom based off of international .. im cool with using map quest.. it works great. So does google maps just navigation sucks. Im stickin with the clean rom 4.2 pack for now. Just figured someone had a work around for no gps issue in nav. Thanks for responding guys

If you got nothing in GPS status then you have a GPS problem, not a navigation problem. Backup your rom, flash Beans, just get it far enough to download GPS status again, get a lock with all the relevant info at the bottom, then restore back to CR.
i was having this same exact problem, i switched to jelly beans now everything works fine

Yeah this. Idk how you're getting a maps lock and not a GPS status lock. But you need a solid lock for turn by turn to work. I was simply thinking you had a good lock. I always use GPS status to check lock and then proceed to use the others. What he suggested works. I did it back on clean rom 3.whatever and haven't had an issue since. However I also took Scotts advice and literally wiped everything about my phone when coming from beans. I'm talking Internal and external SD. Backed it up first of course. Somethjng between em doesn't play nice.

It works because maps will use the Cell towers and wifi to lock on alone, but many apps will require a true GPS lock (Ingress and the Nav app come to mind).
You don't have the experience or credentials to be claiming GPS is "broke". I hear this same stupid crap with every phone I get, and it's always someone like you.
It's not a Clean rom nor Note 2 issue. You're obviously doing it wrong. I don't see how some people have so many issues with phones. It's always noobs like you as well. Proof:

Man I understand the frustration...I do but there was a time even you didn't know jack about phones. Yeah maybe he should've searched but he didn't. No need to bash him so hard. Questions are how some people learn. Myself Included. I see so many high and mighty Devs who are too good to help people with problems yet have no problems bashing people. Its like the nerd in school who was a nobody and is now a somebody but with the worst possible attitude.
never claimed gps was broke, the phone just never picking it up,i never said i was a hacker or a phone programmer just wanted to get some phone freedom rom wise, thanks to the other guys (blackbass) and scott himself for helping out, i went to the verizon lite rom and it worked like a charm, i only brought it up here, because i remember reading awhile back in these forums, i honestly feel great that you took the time to root around in my profile, i feel better that you took the time to do that and not actually help, Blackbass you made a great call on deleting and reinstalling maps, did lock on faster to my local, but no dice on the navigation front.
its working now..maps +navigation thanks again all for helping

UPDATE Aug 13: The app has been removed from the playstore AGAIN
UPDATE JULY 31st: The app has been restore in the playstore, it seems as if the dev was not lying and has kept its promise
Well, the app has been taken down. I contacted the gev through email, facebook and G+ and he never answered. Samething happened to a few members so i have taken my issue with the boss (Google) and they were extremely fast to refund me. Literally 10 seconds after I clicked submit issue, they sent an email confirming me my complaint was accepted and the refund has been made. GREAT!!!
I would not request a refund for an app taken down unless i had issue with it, which i did, so because the dev never answered, here is how to do it for yourself if you feel you've been abandoned.
Log into your google account https://play.google.com/store/account and go to "My Orders and Settings"
Look for SmartRemote and hit "Report a problem", then select "I'd like to request a refund" and give them a brief explenation. Also, if the app serves you, please don't do this, do this only if you're having issues that the dev obviously wont repair because he has, as far as i know, abandonned us.

Then, check your email and within 10 seconds i got this email:
Why was it taken down? Last I checked it was working flawlessly for me...

i'm not sure why, it's really hard to know when the devs cut all communication and doesn't tell anything to anyone. In any case, the apps works fine, just struggles with my specific devices and the dev promised it would be updated to work for my TV and AV but they never did and they stopped emails about 2 weeks ago. So got this refunded and bought TouchSquid which so far works just like i want it too, also it's much more sophisticated and for a limited time it's 12$
What a letdown. It was such a great app!

Does anyone have an apk for it or backup of it on tibu?

i had issues with this app on my s4. after selecting an action, lets say the volume up button, the app would continually trigger the IR, even if i wasnt pressing the volume up button anymore. this was obviously very annoying and required a phone reboot to clear everything up. this happened every time i used the app. the IR would continue flashing after the first button tap.
i've been using samsungs watchON. it took 15 seconds to set up my tv and uverse box and the remote works flawlessly. also, its free. much better remote functionality and layout.
This app pretty much sucks on my S4. A lot of the buttons are useless and when I try to use the center button that is usually associated for "enter" or "ok", it never works ever.
Requested a refund but it said they were unable to give me a refund. Another let down. Bah!

You wont find it here...even though it is now down, it was a paid app and thus uploading would be considered piracy/warez which is against forum rules

had this issue at first, then my real issue, which is still present today is that when i open the app, my blue notification light keeps flashing and drains battery, i have to reboot to fix it.
Also, not sure if im the only one, but the down arrow never works well.

i know what watchon is, its a gimicky, simple app. I want sophistication, macros, shortcuts to the keys i need.
That's strange. The app has always worked great for me. I will continue to use this for the life my S4.

Really I think it might be because it's stupid powerful. I can walk into any store control/cable TV's walk into a bar etc just total havoc. And it don't just work on TVs. Also those that have issues with it still issuing IR commands when it's not on. Disable. Air gestures and the Dynamic Option it will not do that anymore. :good:

Doesnt make sense really as touchsquid allows all the same functions. I mean the watchon app bare minimum allows you to mess with just about most tv's in bars and stores.
