[Q] Reverting to an earlier CWM - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I just got my S2 today to replace my aging Captivate. I didn't read very well and ended up putting CMW 5.x instead of the 4.x needed for CM7, so I kept getting permission errors when trying to install cm7. I am currently running Cognition right now and wanted to go back to CM7 (what I was running on my captivate)
I have a feeling I am going to be told that the only way to go back is with the [Heimdall][Odin][Stock+Root]UCKH7 Stock kernel way. The problem is, I don't have access to a Linux machine at the moment. If there is a way to go from Cog to CM7, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The return to stock packages SHOULD work in Odin too.
However - codeworkx's CWM 5.x should work for installing CM7. It doesn't make sense to me that his CWM kernel wouldn't be able to install his CM7 release. Were you trying to install the I9100 variant of CM7???

Hmmm I9100 shows up on the boot screen. I am guessing I screwed something up. I was installed the I777 CM7 but it kept giving me permission errors and wouldn't install. It says signature verification failed.
So just install those two files through Odin and that should revert it back to stock?

Where you using Rom Manager to flash CM7? Also you can flash to stock using Odin and entropy's files

I9100 will always show on the splash screen if you are running a custom kernel
As far as I can tell it's something in the bootloader, not the kernel itself.

I think I have really messed something up. It won't let me install any zips after I used odin to install SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_X.X.X.X.tar as the PDA. It keeps giving me the signature verification error. I am starting to miss my Captivate a little bit.
Edit: Ok, now I have gone to getting an "error status 7" when installing CM7 from recovery. It will abort the install every time. It's nightly #73.

Sorry for the double post. I came to find out that I am just an idiot. I was trying to install the wrong S2's CM7. Let this be a lesson. Read instructions. Thanks for your help guys.

?
Nightly 73!?? There is no nightly 73 for at&t i777, actually there r no nightlys AT ALL for this phone yet, r u in right xda section?? U can't put a i9100 rom on a i7777 phone nightly 73 is not for i777, go to develop section for this phone everything u need to start over is there hopefully I didn't burn anything up. / if I read ur issues wrong feel free call me dumb ass there is a cm7 version there, it runs great but voice calling is only real issue

[SOLVED]Cannot install ICS ROM--please HELP

hi,
I am sorry if this is a dumb question. But i have failed several attempts while shifting to ICS (RC 5 by team-nyx). Every time when i install ROM & kernel via CWM and boot the device (vibrant t959) it freezes on the screen with VIBRANT and SAMSUNG displaying WHITE on BLACK back ground.
i have gone back to JFD and tried several times BUT same result.
I was on froyo 2.2 (build UVKB5) updated via kies and did it but no luck. I followed wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Vibrant:_Full_Update_Guide and did starting from No. 03 --
downloaded Cmenard's Kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5
Heimdall Suite 1.3.2 for windows
AND upto No. 9 under Windows ONLY: section
the CWM installs as it says (A blue transfer bar will appear on the phone showing the kernel being transferred. The device will reboot automatically. )
after that i cleared factory, cache and dalvik cache.
then I select install Zip from SD card and chose the ROM (which is from team-nyx.com/index.php/releases).
after 3% it says rebooting and vibrant shuts down and reboots.. when after I clicked the combo (vol+vol-power) to enter the CWM its not there.. so I reinstall using [heimdall flash --kernel zImage] command in PC's cmd. then after i redid the same to select from SD and then ROM installed ok.
then I selected the kerenel which was taken by same source and installation went normal..
after I select reboot from CWM it reboots and hangs on vibrant screen.
I cannot figure OUT WHAT IM doing WRONG..
Please HELP ME..!!!
thank you for your time
I am moving to 2.2 via kies after going back to stock JFD. then i will root my vibrant. after that i will install ROM manager from market. THEN i will try to FLASH to ICS RC 5 + kernel from nyx TEAM.
I dont know what is wrong.. please HELP
From what you told us it sounds right. Have you tried a different ICS rom? Give ICS slim a try. When you Odin back did you checked re-partition?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk 2
You should try flashing the Gingerbread bootloaders using Odin after you flash back to stock. Those bootloaders can run a Froyo ROM as well as ICS so it wouldn't hurt to do either way. After you flash the bootloader then try flashing the ROM.
And try a different ROM like iwillkillyou suggested. Slim is good, but ICZen is very solid if you're tipping your toes into ICS.

Just so that you know, everytime you are using Kies, you are running the risk of hardbricking your device. It is notorius for that and in fact someone last week got HBricked with it.
I don't use ROM Manager and probably won't as long as I have a Vibrant. All you need to do is go back to JFD and pull the CWR from my signature and put it on your internal_sd and label it as Update.zip. Then boot into recovery and hit Reinstall PAckages (might have to do this twice) and your stock recovery (blue) will go to CWR (green) and you can flash away.
Also for more detailed instructions, se my ICS install giude also in my signature.

Thank you for the links.. I downloaded and place CWR inside SD. Without kies can we install official releases via Odin.. is there any way.. im sorry if that is a stupid question
No stupid questions. That is why we are here. I am pretty sure there is a flashable 2.2 stock floating aroung here. I personally don't have it though. Custom 2.2's are at this point tweaked so completely out, that they will blow the doors off any 2.2 stock ROM out there. I usggest Moped_Ryder's ROMs and Fishman's Bionix-redux ROMs. Quality, fast and stable. Not ICS, but everything works and no fear of the dreaded Encryption Bug.
PM incoming btw.

thank you. btw can we Flash to 2.2 via CWM .. directly selecting the ROM from SD .. without Odin
If you can find it, you should be able to. Just put on your card and flash away, taking care to wipe accordingly.
A note on flow though:
2.1, 2.2 -can go into and out of any 2.2 there is laterally.
2.3-4.0 -will need to Odin to stock before going back to a 2.2 ROM. Can move laterally from 4.0 to 4.0 though.
(i.e DO NOT try to restore a 2.2 nandroid or flash a 2.2 ROM when you are on an ICS variant. the /system is completely changed and reformatted. You need to Odin to get it back.)
Moped Ryder uploaded a semi tweaked version of the stock 2.2 build. It's a zip that you can just flash using CWR:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674519
It comes rooted with busybox and some other goodies, but it's the stock kernel and whatnot. I'd highly recommend Fishman's Bionix-V Mod or Moped Ryder's Slim_Ryder ROMs if you're going to be on Froyo though. They're both great, but I went with Fishman's latest Bionix Mod since I couldn't get bluetooth to work on Moped Ryder's ROM. Which is really unfortunate because I loved Moped Ryder's otherwise.
And you don't have to Odin back to stock if you're just bouncing around Froyo or Eclair builds; only if you're coming from Gingerbread or ICS (2.3 or 4.0).
Keep us updated. I'm curious to see what worked. It's probably the gingerbread loaders. But, who knows.

BUT it didnt worked for me instead freezes at Vibrant start-up screen. So i Couldnt switch back to CWM. I Odin back to JFD with repartition clicked and my vibrant was locked (network lock). Finally, I got it cleared by application named Galaxy_S Unlock by Helroz from the market.
Now I am at the very beginning again. I am now on 2.1 JFD. I dont know WHY this happening to me .. :crying:
gonna try again with GB bootloaders.. BUT Im sick of failing and going back to 2.1 (my friends who are having captivate had no problem)

Thank you guys for the links and thoughts on 2.2 ROMs.. I am not that expert . Thats why i was updating to 2.2 via KIES -- which is not a good idea as it seems with the ability 2 brick the device. I am going to get Bionix-V FishmanMod V4 FULL and install as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441976 says..
It says Boot into clockwork recovery and i think i found something to do that in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734164
I have to get ROM manager from market and go through it..
BUT Im damn upset with the RC5 ICS update by nyx being unable to installed into my device.. I will try with GB bootloaders flashed ..
If you are going to go with Fish's ROM, then all you need to do is Odin back to JFD and pull the CWR from my signature and put it on your internal_sd and label it as Update.zip. Then boot into recovery and hit Reinstall Packages (might have to do this twice) and your stock recovery (blue) will go to CWR (green) and you can flash away.
Fish also has a Odin package that you can flash his ROM through Odin and not have to deal with CWR.
ROM Manager is no longer supporting 2.1, so if you do go back to JFD, then it will be hard to get RM. It is out there somewhere but really all you need is the Update.zip from above to do it. I suggest that you stay on Fish's ROM for awhile and read about ICS installs and all the little things that are involved. If you do flash Fish's ROM, you don't need to mess with the bootloaders.
Btw, aside from Kies, messing with Bootloaders is one of the sure fire ways to hardbrick your device. It only takes seconds to flash them, but do it wrong and, well you know.
Good luck and ask if you have any.

Thanks again for the reply. now I have stock 2.1 with ROOT . (rooted cuz i had to unlock the vibrant). I will flash to Fish's 2.2 ROM soon. BTW may i ask you after moving to Fish's ROM and later if i need to move to ICS still can I do it without messing with Bootloaders..
Thank you
That is what we are here for in the Q&A/General sections.
Regaring your question about Gingerbread bootloaders being needed:::Yes and No.
Gingerbread bootloaders were required in the infancy of ICS ROMs bc they prevented what is called "Rainbows" in your clockwork where you couldn't see anything. The options were there but you just couldn't see them. Then as ICS evolved, the need for GB bl's lessened and now you don't need them at all.
But...There's always a but...Gingerbread bl's are recommended by most of the devs for ICS builds because they seem to work better with the custom recoveries that come with some of the kernels. There is more to it but in short, GB bl's are not required but recommended.
If you go to my ICS install guide, in the middle pages and more again at the end, Yosup (highly respected user) and I have a detailed conversation about bootloaders and their installation. Once he got over the fear and did it, he was hooked and flashing ICS ROMs weekly if not more. It is a very informative section of that thread.

Can't install any application on my Vibrant

Hello, at the start i wanted to install some new ICS rom for my Vibrant..i try to root it with one click and i couldn't do that coz i had froyo(2.2update)..so i read some forums and found solution in odin...i used that to turn back to stock eclair where i rooted the phone ...but the problem is that now i can't install any application on the device(i need ROM manager)..i get to android market and ,click on application but nothing is happening, no download at all...than i try to use android injection with apks that i found on the net , but nothing, i always get INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK...so now i am stuck i have: fimware version-2.1 update 1,baseband T959UVJFD, kernel 2.6.29 can you tall me should i do?? thx
Read the guide in my signature on how to install ICS ROMs. It has an update.zip that you can use for CWR.
ROM manager no longer supports 2.1 (Eclair), so that is why you can't see it in the market.
Download the clockwork mod recovery file (update.zip) and save it to the internal storage on the phone. Then reboot into recovery and install packages. Might have to do it twice. Then you'll be in CWM recovery. Install from from there.

FWIW, and this is not a knock on Team Passion (they do excellent work but few updates), but Euphoria is somewhat outdated. There are plenty of ICS ROMs out there that are more up-to-date and when ICS went from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 there were significant code changes that were done. I suggest ICZen, or Slim or CM9.
But if you want to stay on Euphoria (AOKP based), this is from my guide:
If you get the RANDOM OFFSET error.
Don't freak out. This is an ICS security feature (as posted in Passion's FAQ post). All you have to do is pull your battery and boot back into recovery and reflash ICS over itself (just like you did with the initial CM7 bootloop) and it should push through. You may need to do this multiple times. I have read of people having to do it up to 5x. YMMV though.

accidental captivate flash

this is what i get for oding late at night but i managed to do something very very stupid I odined my phone with a one click package for my captivate
I've been able to get the phone back in mostly working order now though.. but i feel in my gut something still may not be right.
here is where i got the package
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
This below is what version i accidently installed.
I897UCKI2 Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread
With Bootloaders - Link to thread - Second Post [With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog]
so after i made this mistake.. (noticed my phone had a at&t bootscreen an wouldn't load) I went forth an flashed stock firmware avail for aiotools for the vibrant an then installed the stock froyo bootloader
I'm hoping everything is right in its place well except once i get cm9 flashed it boots up an shows a EU error so i freak yank the battery an odin this phone back into the stoneage an well... surprisingly.... my internal memory is 100% there O.O
anyways current issue is not being able to get cm7 to install though i'm probably missing something due to being tired anyways..
help sugestions banter calling me a noob I just want to make sure i did possibly everything to fix this mistake.

Well, when you say you are not able to get CM7 to install, what exactly is it doing?
Are you getting thrown into a bootloop (caused by CWR mismatch and pretty common)? If so, pull battery and boot into recovery and re-flash CM7 over itself again. No wipe. Then reboot.
You may have to flash a different kernel, like glitch or something like that. But try the above first. Should work for you. Does it still say ATT when you boot up?
Lucky for you, everything is good, but if you want to flash a GB or higher ROM, i would suggest you flash the bootloaders in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117990
After that just flash CM9, and you *should* be good, if not, try flashing it again with wiping data, cache, and dalvik cache. I guarantee that will work.
I ended up having to format both SD cards an retrying install custom rom via aio tool an with luck was able to get cm7 installed then cm10 an i dno't have the ime error everyone else seams to have . I did before this flash the gb bootloader over this cause it was the only thing that managed to remove the at&t splash screen before the kernal.
Lesson I learned....
remember that the vibrant you use aio tool not a premade pack >.<
an ya i do own both phones so this does complicate things now an then <,<
I also have both devices. Set up two different folders on your pc, one marked i897 and the other t959. I also add i897 or t959 to any files that could possibly get mixed up in Odin.

[Q] Can't go back to jellybean

Ok so I was using AOKP jellybean 4.2 and wanted to try going back to ICS to compare battery life and ram usage.
After I flashed ICS Milestone 1 and played around with it I was not satisfied so naturally I wanted to go back to jellybean. CWM reverted back to and older version so I assumed when I flashed the JB rom again it would put the 6.2. something CWM back on. It did, but now when I try to use factory reset CWM reboots real quick and doesn't do anything. I can try to flash the rom again but it fails and gives a Status 0 error and doesn't flash. I used Odin to go back to cwm4_fixed_for_cm7-ODIN then installed the ICS build 2 to get the ICS stuff working. All this worked fine and after the build 2 booted up I went back into recovery and flashed milestone 1 again. Now I am stuck on ICS. I can't get JB to flash or else it will get back to the 6.2. something one and I have to repeate the whole process again to get the phone back up and running.
Please help me out here.

Yes. The current fascinatemtd cm10.1-based ROMs have the smarts to modify the partition table when coming directly from stock. The lingering instruction to first flash an old team hacksung build is outdated.
If I recall, the mtd partition layout on the fascinate changed during the time of the early JB builds... Space had to be rearranged to make room for the added bulk of jellybean, and this is why it's complicated to go back and forth between earlier and current mtd- based ROMs.
It seems there is a mechanism to deal with such a partition changes (warning that all data will be wiped, and instructing to reflash the room to confirm), but I'm hazy on where the code is and when this occurs.

Couple of things you could try- use a different usb cable (are you using the original one or not?), use different usb port on the computer, use an older version of Odin, use a different OS

try restarting your computer. also, don't use the same usb port for heimdall/odin.
I got it to work now. I had downloaded the most current version of Heimdall and apparently it has some compatibility issues. I just downloaded the 1.3.1 version and used the driver installer with that. Thanks for all the help. Now can someone direct me to a JB rom I can go to from GB that works well?

They all work well, just try them all. The most popular one I guess is probably CM10.1 but really any of the other current JB roms are quite good, it's just a matter of taste. I personally started running Helly Bean because it's just like CM10.1 but with Devil so it gives me better tweaks to make it run smoother.

[Q] What ROM would YOU recommend?

My friend and I both have Fascinates. I got mine first, and just rooted the Gingerbread that came with it. I use it for medical purposes, and really needed something stable and reliable.
When my friend got hers, we decided to go for a more recent ROM, and chose GeeWiz 4.4.2 (Jellybean). It was real easy to install and didn't require anything special. It worked great for a little while, but as she added apps to it, it got real laggy and hard-crashed a fair amount.
Yesterday, all hell broke loose with it. Suddenly, every Google app was crashing, including the Play Store. I researched the issue and found many other people with similar problems on various phones. I tried literally 16 different fixes, none of which worked. So I had to hard reset it.
Since it's a blank canvas, and her experience with GeeWiz wasn't all that great, I figure it's a good time to try something else.
What do YOU recommend?
Here's her priorities:
1. Must be super stable.
2. Everything must work. Speakerphone, bluetooth, camera, video, microSD, you name it.
3. Not laggy.
4. Good battery life.
She really likes the Jellybean notifications, so she would prefer Jellybean or later.
I'm very interested in what the community recommends. :highfive:
the newest cm10.1 nightly was rock solid for me. helly bean 4.2.2 was good too. don't go beyond 4.2 if you want good stability, i don't think some basic things work in the cm11 builds yet (GPS and MMS are flaky)
oh also don't feel bad for running stock GB. i'm actually running it right now (rooted, lean kernel, and i gutted out the majority of samsung things)
---------- Post added at 11:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 PM ----------
also, for future reference, any thread you post of similar connotation to this will probably get locked by a moderator and he'll say "oh try roms out for yourself blah blah blah"
so if that happens, don't say i jinxed it. also, i've had my fassy for around 6 months and i've tried literally everything under the sun for it.
I agree with sceptic on these ROM selections

I thought Geewiz was only made for the Fascinate? I have been trying the Geewiz rom, and so far the only time it became laggy was when I set the cpu Govenor to a power saving option. Otherwise it has actually been much faster booting up than the kitkat roms.

Okay, trying to get Hellybean working... but am stuck!
Thank you to everyone providing a reply so far. Please keep the suggestions coming. :highfive:
I am trying to install the recommended Hellybean 4.2, and am stuck.
The phone was stock Gingerbread, and then I installed the GeeWiz 4.4 ROM on it. Had some lagging and crashing, so now I'm trying to get Hellybean 4.2 on it, per recommendations of others.
So I downloaded the latest Hellybean 4.2 from the hellybean website. I then booted into recovery, and selected Update from Zip and and tried to install the Hellybean zip. I get a Status 7 error. Some sites said to try it 3 times. I tried it 5 times. No dice.
I can't find a Hellybean 4.2 Fascinate thread on XDA, so details are sparse. Am I blind?
Am I correct in understanding that Hellybean 4.2 includes the devil kernel? Or do I need to ODIN a different kernel first?
I installed ROM Manager to get the latest CWM Recovery, but it says the Fascinate is an "unknown device". There is no CWM Recovery installation file for the Fascinate listed on the Clockworkmod website. UGH! :crying:
Can anyone help? I can follow step by step instructions real well. :good:
Progress Update
I noticed the link in hhp_221's signature, and followed it. I installed his devil kernel for Jellybean 4.2.2. Works a treat. :good:
Then I tried to install the Hellybean 4.2 zip file in the resultant CWM Recovery, and now I get a Status 0 error. Tried it 5 times. Same thing each time.
Help!

okay here's some instructions (assuming the phone is on stock. if it isn't just go into odin and reflash it again because you're probably bricked)
1. let it boot up after odining EH03 (might want to throw cm10.1, helly, and google apps on the sd card at this point)
2. after it boots, flash GBBootloaders.tar and cwm 4 fixed for cm7. those files can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070
3. go into recovery by pressing and holding volume up, down, and power until the samsung logo flashes and reapppears
4. wipe data and cache
5. flash the newest cm10.1 (gapps too if you want to stay on cm, if you want helly don't bother flashing gapps)
6. reboot
7. if you're flashing helly, reboot into recovery from cm and flash helly from CWM. and gapps. wipe data too just to be safe.
if any of my guide didn't help, just follow the thread i linked in step 2. it's a good comprehensive guide.
also never flash anything with ROM Manager, it's useless for this phone because the version of CWM on ROM Manager is really old. i've bricked my phone when trying it.
Getting closer!

Thank you for all the tips. Using your tips, I successfully got CM 10.1 onto her phone. But I read her the description of HellyBean, and she would prefer that (of course :cyclops.
So once CM 10.1 is on, I booted into it, and then immediately turned it off. I then booted into CWM recovery, and tried to install the Hellybean ROM. I get the Status 7 error each time. You mentioned wiping data after installing helly, but I think you meant before (let me know if I'm mistaken).
I researched Status 7 errors, and some people say they are because the ROM is expecting a different existing version to be installed over. I took a look at the build.prop file in Hellybean, and it references the Gingerbread 2.3.5 EI20 ROM, whereas all I could find was the stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 EH03 ROM. I tried editing the build.prop file to reflect EH03, but I an aborted error when trying to install that.
The radio and all other items on the phone should be stock. Not sure if that helps or hurts in getting Hellybean installed.
Anyways, any and all help in getting from CM 10.1 to Hellybean 4.2.2 would be most appreciated. Or I can put stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 EH03 back on and start from there. :good:

wipe data before installing helly. also i've never bothered with build.prop in Hellybean. it only references to EI20 for Voodoo Sound drivers. EI20 is the stock build for.. i believe the US Cellular Mezmerize (aka not the Verizon Fascinate). so don't screw with it
yes stock radio is good. EH03 is a good radio but if you want you can flash EC09, based off of a leak of GB. some people have good luck with it, i used to but i like EH03.
so.. i'm not sure if you can boot the phone into helly bean. it sounds like you were getting a lot of "status 7" errors, which i didn't ever get while trying to use helly. this may or may not be caused by the sd card. try a different card if possible. if you're bricked at this point just start over from EH03.
also be sure you're using the 2013-7-23 build of helly, that's the last one based off of 4.2.2, the rest are broken 4.3 builds.
Good advice!

Thanks for the heads up on the helly build! I got one from the Hellybean website, and it's labeled 20131024. I tried and tried to find the 2013-7-23 but no luck , could you guide me to a source for it? Thanks!

good luck!
Sooooo close...
Thank you for the helly link!
Followed instructions, and successfully got it to helly!:good:
But... been trying to flash the gapps, and no go. It says it's successfully installed, but then nothing happens. Also noticed it can't mount the cache. And noticed that the zip says it's signed but if signature verification is enabled, cwm says the signature is not valid.
Any thoughts/ideas/solutions? Thanks!

give us what the recovery version number is.
Is it the red touch recovery (that is what is included with hellybean)
gapps...
bad download maybe, it does happen...
get and verify the md5 yourself with an app
for windows
or an android one
like this one
are you using this gapps version? http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip
its what you need to start with,, and then after you sign in to your account,, it will check to see what needs to be updated.
.
I tried the cm10 mentioned here. It does seem very nice. It appears to have more features than Geewiz also, along with a lot more ringtones.

Thank you for the avenues to explore. The recovery that comes up is CWM Recovery v4.0.1.0. Does that mean helly didn't really install successfully? When it boots, it does give the Devil kernel graphic, which I understand is part of helly?

I looked at the gapps. It is the gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip and the md5 checks out.
It's the blue CWM, forgot to mention that...

whoa you're not supposed to have blue recovery after flashing a 4.x ROM (or MTD as we call it).
go to step 4 in this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070
you're going to have to reflash EH03 in Odin before doing anything because your recovery is borked.
Got it!!
Finally got helly onto a phone! Ended up starting all over, and then just flashing to helly since had the right file and hadn't tried going directly (skipping CM). And it worked! But the 3-finger salute got us back into blue CWM. So I started all over again, and once helly was on, I thought I'd do a reboot just to make things happier, which is when we noticed the 'reboot to recovery' and remembered that we had read somewhere that you sometimes have to use that instead of the 3-finger. So we did and everything has been golden since then. I love, love this ROM!
Big thanks to you guys for helping us through the process! We couldn't have done it without you!!
