Just bought a photon, what's next? - Motorola Photon 4G

What do I need to buy as accessories and what mods are first priority?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

Root!
Case, Otterbox commuter?
HDMI Cable?
Up to you really. Whatever suits your needs.

I would hold off on root, myself. I've had mine a couple months, and still haven't rooted, cause the phone does EVERYTHING outta the box. That's just my opinion, though.
What sold me on the Photon was the web dock (even though I can't afford one yet). It's pretty sick. I would also highly recommend the Otterbox defender case. It adds some chunk to the phone, but it's really the best case if you move around a lot, or have kids with sticky fingers (I have 3).
My friend also bought the car dock, and swears by it.
Pew! Pew! Pew! From my Mo-Pho!
http://android-gz.com

Although I've rooted, not sure it's really needed - not a terrible amount of bloatware and lots of memory. WiFi tether? - yes, then root. If you root, consider an ad blocker and Droidwall.
Case - I like Seidio myself, but YMMV
Apps - a 3rd party launcher if you want more eye candy that stock. Launcher Pro + and Beautiful Widgets for me.

lol that is Exactly what I did after i got mine, definetly go with the commuter unless you are in construction or something the defender is great for those needs but it makes the phone bulky! ive dropped my commuter many a time getting out of my truck and not a nick on the device itself, and they come with a screen protector as well. I would download some Tegra optimized games too I think they have 2 or 3 in the tegra zone and have fun with it! Root is great and all but if you have no real need for it i wouldnt worry too much about it,I believe Yay 4 Juggs is in the process of unlocking the bootloader and thats where the real fun begins

Install the newest leaked rom for video chat via gtalk. That was my reason for rooting. Now i am running without su

I got rid of my Flyer

I sold it. Why? Because there is no official upgrade or whatsoever since I got it on May, and most of all, the scribe pen is useless and have very little function to it on evernote. I paid freaking $80 for the pen! $80! And all it can do is take down notes! I could have bought any other tablet for that kind of use. But what I really bought it for was for sketching and hoped that it would function with Fresco app... but HTC won't do a damn thing about their $80 pen. So long Flyer!
so, we care because?
and which one did you buy?

If you have any bad feedback about the flyer post it on HTC facebook page o twitter, i love the scribe pen and his integration with evernote but seriously as someone said here "if you are going to buy something, buy it for what it is and not for what it will be".
All you have written in the first post says to me that the flyer wasn't for you (and it is one of the best tablets that i have used) and the fault was your bad choice of shopping a product that will fits yours needs and not the tablet itself.
Amen to 13lizzard. This is all generically a "PC" world because of the "personal" part of computing. For me, the Flyer is the best set of price, feature, size, and quality out there, and obviously it is not for SC23 - great, I get it - but above all, BUY YOUR TOYS FOR WHAT THEY CAN DO, NOT WHAT THEY MIGHT BECOME. That's kind of like marrying a gal not for who she is but how you think you are going to change her...
I don't know how you couldn't make use of pen, but I now use Flyer instead of carrying a lot of notebooks with me while working with customers at field. You can make a full report with photo, notes, and even sound record. Even with HC update, pen is much more useful. Maybe you should go for iPad2

Well I paid 300.00 Enjoy your Samsung, their support is no better than HTC's. Go talk to the original Galaxy tab 7 owners who are still sitting on Froyo, a device they still sell for $300.00. Threads like this serve absolutely no purpose. Be sure to shut the door on your way out.

Its basically a crap shoot with any of these manufactures. Except Asus Acer since they dont produce many phones. They all pretty much suck for updates. However the xoom has been doing well. I chose this because the flyer was too much drama, no root, no way to go back from HC, and no support.

I can't decide whether you are being sarcastic or honest.
I switched to pencil and paper for a bit. The UI is bare, but its as natural of an interface as you can get. An added bonus is the low cost of hardware upgrades.
i have even found the customer support rubbish for when pencil hardware failed multi times and needed to be rebooted with sharpener. i think it has boot looped and now run out of battery
Meh. The reason I won't touch any android manufacturer other then HTC is:
1) HTC Sense
2) Build Quality
I have always known that HTC uses inferior CPU/GPU; However, the build quality + software MORE then makes up for it.
I work for HTC and have been using the Flyer with Honeycomb test ROMs for a couple months. I absolutely love it. Flyer + Honeycomb is brilliant.
Flyer fans, keep the faith! You will be rewarded soon.

Pretty stoked. Upgrading from an Incredible II..
Help a brother out with some useful tips haha
Get the CommuterSeries Otterbox. It's almost the same dimensions as the silicone skin....
Read the manual, or look at some of the videos on the device - there is some useful "Bloatware" that comes with the phone - Stuff I've never seen built in.

Working with, repairing and selling both phones I see it as a wash. If someone is looking for a "in your hand" media phone, I push the Epic. It has an attractive screen and media optimizations that the MoPho doesn't have. If someone is looking for "and the kitchen sink" phone, I push the MoPho. It's screen and media playback falls short of the Epic but has amazing expansion capabilities. Granted I avoid iPhones like the plague (sheeple products annoy me) but if the customer can barely understand their hero/moment then I point them towards an iPhone. If I didn't need the MoPho's feature set I would have gone with the Epic.
(Please note that the 3D abomination is not in the above paragraph. That's one POS I will not sell to anybody. Almost every 3D that comes in for service ends up getting replaced.)
I ended up going through 4 evo 3D's before switching to photon. That phone is a POS. HTC really let me down man and I got that sucker on launch day. After the Evo 3D I used a Nexus s for a month which was another plastic POS by Samsung (also garbage). Photon was my first moto android device and they won me over...for now. That said, I agree with the guy above me 100%.

Just random issues Samsung phones usually have. At home I can get a solid 9mb on 4G consistently and her ET maxes out at 4/5mb tops right next to mine. Signal isn't all that great in our home (same problem I had with the nexus s). Phone feels very cheap as compared to the photon or 3D. She likes it but then again she likes whatever phone you put in her hand. I'd say she's not the most tech savvy person out there so she wouldn't know what works etc. I know though...the small issues drive me nuts lol. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the excellent radio moto has in this thing now! Sammy's are known for weak radios just ask the original iPhone 4 owners

if having a phone that lags on its own OS, has a screen that looks like bees painted it with there asses, has very little dev support, no plans of getting ics ota update, and has a return rate of 45% (at my store)... I don't know how u would even think about calling this phone an upgrade over the galaxy s ii.
The only thing holding this phone off from being 100% crap is its radio, GSM card slot, and it being sold in stores (best buy, target, and Walmart) for only $50 to $100 bucks.

You mad bro? Lol
Motorola hasnt denied any of its latest phones only stated which ones are getting it first for sure. They made this very clear with an official statement. I believe this phone will see ICS q1 2012 same with the epic touch (which is a plastic PIECE OF **** with a nice screen). That's all Samsung phones have going is the screen. And dev support? Who says we don't have any? We have enough dev support; let me guess, you're one of those people who thinks a new rom is when someone takes a base, removes a few apps and adds a theme? (i.e the evo 4G/3D forums). This phone has webtop, kernel devs and a dedicated cm7 dev and others chip in. What else do you need?
Epic touch is a joke with a shiny screen, I can say that because I have one right next to me. Get real kid..

Is the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE a good phone?

I know this question could be answered in many different ways. More along the lines of people saying yes it is a good phone since I'm asking in this forum Lol. But O figured its better asking people here on XDA about the device since I know people here adore their device and use it in every way possible....So how is this phone? How is the battery, camera, speed of the phone etc etc. Im looking into buying one for my wife. She has the incredible 2 and is ready for a new phone and I can get it for a pretty good price. To her, she wouldn't probably notice anything like I would about the phone. But I still wanna make sure she has a nice phone to have. I'd appreciate it if I could get some responses to this. I've done research on the phone. I know most the stuff about it. But like I said, I wanna know from people here on XDA. Thanks

Short answer - IMHO, Yes.
I came to this phone from the OG Dinc. When I bought this phone, it was the only 4G phone smaller than 4.3 inches. I do not want a big phone. The OG Dinc was better made than the Dinc4g, but it the only real annoyance is the creaky back cover issue. WIth a little tape and a few post-it notes, it isn't a big deal (fix instructions/pictures here). I could be wrong, but I think the OG DInc camera was a little better, but the 4G camera is still good.
Other than the creaky cover, it has been a great phone. Radio is good, the phone is quick and smooth. The 4G is amazingly fast, battery life is very good (as long as you have a decent signal). I rarely use WiFi.
Now with DirtyRacun s-off and root, the phone is even better. There are several active Devs doing great work on this phone: We have two different recoveries to choose from (CWM or TWRP). The ViperLTE ROM is rock solid and has great tweaks. If you're a CM lover, CyanogenMod 10.1 is in Unofficial Preview, and based on the thread comments, it is working extremely well. Other ROMs are being developed as well.
If you like a car dock, the iBolt car dock works great with this phone, too - even with a TPU case installed.
All in all - I'm quite happy with this phone.
Hey thanks so much for the reply. Great information...so its got a creaky back cover eh? Weird Lol and ya if it was my phone i would definitely root it and probably go with nitsuj's ROM. He does some great work. But its my wifes phone so probably will leave it stock. But....any idea of it getting jellybean anytime soon? I've tried searching and found out its on the list of getting it sometime down the road. Again thanks for your input

my #1 item was size. so this was really the only option... i waited a while for it to actually come out and so happy i did. i came from an original incredible.
currently rooted / soff with dirty racun and running viper rom with zero issues.
it would be nice if it were a little more popular and had some more activity around it.

That fix along with a case does indeed make the phone feel much more solid. I'm using this one: Link. It's cheap and effective, but I would like the front sides to come up a smidge higher.
yea - the creaky cover is pretty common. i don't notice it with a case on it...
i've always been partial to the tpu style cases - they don't add bulk, soft enough to help with some impact, not so sticky that they catch in pockets... i've been using this one -

Hey thanks for recognizing.. lol. Well in all honesty I really believe all the hype about the G3, but I'm also considering the M8 cause it's closer to what I'm accustomed to. Like someone mentioned above, I was a long-time Galaxy S fan. I had every one from the Fascinate to the S4. My first LG phone was the G2, which I got on a whim because my S4 broke. Let's just say I loved the G2 so much that I HAD to get the G3.
The only downer for me is that there is no root yet, but of course that will come with time. The problems you mentioned above, I don't experience myself, but root will fix a lot of it. The dev in charge is going through some life problems atm, so we have to wait. I am definitely patient though. It's like waiting for Christmas!

Personally, I have zero heat issues but I don't game other than solitare. As far as lag goes, I'm still in disbelief because I have not experienced that either. Enable dev options, set animations to .5. I had used Nova for a week and then switched back to stock. In my opinion, lag is a myth. Possibly on the 16/2 models it may exist but this is much faster than my Nexus was.
Thanks for the feedback guys.. much appreciated. I'll let you know if I get it. (Most likely I will). Oh, another thing, is it safe to buy from either Amazon or bestbuy? Only cost 100$..

I'm actually an avid gamer. My phone gets a little warm after a while, but not warmer than what I'd expect from a 2.5ghz, 3GB RAM beast lol it's not like super hot though, like people have been saying. I have even played while the phone is charging. It doesn't get extremely hot at all. The quad HD display is absolutely beautiful for gaming and even videos, too.

I got mine for $100 on contract from Best Buy. No problems. It was the price that drew me in. It's pretty much impulse buy territory. I have 5 lines on the ED1500 family plan and Framily would actually cost me significantly more because everyone on the plan is a high data user. So to me, if I'm happy with the service and don't plan on leaving, what sense does it make to switch to a more expensive plan where I pay the full price of the phone over 24 installments when I can get it subsidized and only pay $100 once.
Also, my co-worker and fiance had Evo LTEs. I guess our area has a lot of band 41 and Sprint Spark flies. I have seen upwards of 70 Mbps. I get +50 Mbps at my desk at work in Addison, Texas. After seeing my speed tests my co-worker picked up a G3 at lunch one day and has been blown away. He would previously get less than 1 Mbps with his Evo LTE at work. The best part is shutting up all the Sprint haters when we compare speed test results. AT&T, lucky to get over 15 Mbps. Verizon, 8-10 Mbps. T-Mobile is nigh unusable. I used to be embarrassed, but now I can see where Sprint's network vision investment with my own eyes and it's glorious.
I want to pull the trigger on the G3 but for some reason I keep pondering the M8... Damn! Getting a new phone is like buying a house...lol! But I'm almost certain that I can't go wrong with either phone.. It's just a tough decision... Could use some more feedback from those that have used both..thanks!

I know this would probably require root or something but I'm curious to know if there's a way to force the G3 to stay on LTE signal??

You could force LTE (not sure exactly how to do it, but it would likely require the right dialer code and the MSL) but you wouldn't be able to get phone calls since there's no VoLTE

I still can't for the life of me understand all the m8 hype. I've seen so many blogs and posts about the "premium build".... Just because it's a metal shell does not mean premium, or great build quality in my book. I was pretty unimpressed when I actually tested one out. It's like a tin can wrapped around a piece of glass. To me the build quality was crap the way the shell wraps the glass bezel. This is in the g3 forum so I don't feel bad dissing the m8

Your opinion is respected but I'm more concerned with how the phones actually work. And I've heard that the M8 is probably the smoothest out there.. and I'm very use to HTC phones so that's why I'm maybe still considering it. But the G3 looks a beast, no doubt about that..

So far I've been very pleased with the LG g3. I've had zero issues. Performance for me has been great. The screen looks fantastic and battery life has been outstanding. You have the ability to remove most of the bloat, and the camera is excellent. Build quality is nice and solid, and I liked the striped down ui. 5.5 screen is really easily handled as well by design.
The last few years I've had HTC and Samsung so LG is a welcomed change ?

So here are phones... Hero, evo 3d and the evo LTE. As you can see it was HTC all the way. Got this phone 3 weeks ago, picked up my evo twice and think ugh, so small and slow........why am I even?! I've now seen you and a small handful of us from the LTE. Usually don't say much, just listen so to speak and I would not go back, get the m8 or any device besides this. It's like the power of 3 lte's and has a great camera.
Not my say in it, but I have not regretted it at all!
