From Atrix to SGS-2 Back-up & Restore - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hello to all,
I have a Atrix and am moving to a Samsung Galaxy S-2 for many reasons, on AT&T. My Primary Email is Roadrunner and My secondary is Gmail. Unfortunately, there appears to be no App similiar to "Blackberry Desktop Manager" that does similar on Android, and I need to get some help with "How To" Move my Email, Text, SMS and other Messaging from the Atrix to the SGS-2.
When I open the Contact or Address Book Icon, on the Atrix it shows, "450" Contacts-( On the Atrix) Im hopeful, Ill be able to save that as well.
I was hoping I could find some help here from one of the Senior XDA Members, as to what I need to do.
Thank you in advance!

Contacts - should be synced to your Google account unless you've been storing them incorrectly on the Atrix. Log into Gmail and check to make sure your contacts are all there. If they are, you should be able to sync right up the moment you add your Google account on the GS2.
SMS and Call Logs - I use SMS Backup and Restore and Call Logs Backup and Restore from Ritesh Sahu. You'll need to pull the XML files from the Atrix's SD card after doing a backup
Apps - Titanium Backup will let you backup your apps, then "restore missing apps" on the GS2.
Emails - Gmail is stored on the server, if Roadrunner is IMAP, the same deal should apply

I have an Atrix but I'm here because I'm considering making the same move. I'd be interested to hear why you switched if you're willing to share.
As far as your contacts, if you go into Contacts then Settings, what is 'Contact Storage' set to? I'm wondering if they're really on the phone?
I see an 'export to sd card' option (hit menu while in contacts). It will supposedly dump them all into a .vcf file on your sd card. You should be able to import that into Gmail's contacts and then they just show up on your SGS2.
Good luck!

[Q] Contacts and Google Sync on Vibrant?

Quick question about the way the Vibrant syncs with google:
Every time I add a new contact on my phone, it asks if I want to store to phone, or gmail, and every time i click phone assuming that it would automatically sync with gmail periodically.
Is this not the case!??! I installed a new rom recently and it wiped the phone, and the whole time I was thinkin "o well, it'll resync when I link my account" ... after the rom installation, i noticed that few new phone #s weren't there.
Does that mean every time I add a new number I should always save it to my google account instead of directly on the phone?
And for contacts that are stored on the phone, they appear with a green phone logo next to the contact in the list. Those linked with google appear with a black box and a white "g" inside. How do I convert those stored on my phone to link with google? Do I go "edit" --> "link contact"?
Update:
For contacts that are "google" contacts, they can't be categorized into groups on my vibrant either, because they aren't recognized. Only contacts that I've recently added into the phone are recognized. Is there some trick that I'm not aware of?
I second this question. I used a G1 previously and this new method is extremely confusing.
I currently have NO "contacts" and ONLY google contacts, which means apparently I can't set up any groups because my phone doesn't know who my contacts are!

slick, you bring up another point I wanted to ask about as well! Thanks!
I'm going to amend that into the OP
bump...?
I find it amazing that people have figured out how to turn these phones into toasters, rocketships, nuclear-war-launch-devices and other errata, but haven't figured out how to store contacts correctly...

I always make my contacts google, works good for flashing as much as I do, and also if you upgrade your phone in the future, as long as it is android it will automatically put all your contacts in their for you. If you dont want to do that, there is a paid app called mybackup pro that will backup contacts. But I do suggest that you always use google to save time in the future.
You can link contacts, but all it does is make it so it does not show up as a duplicate contact on your list, your best bet is to log into gmail, go to contacts and add them from there. then you can hit menu and filter what shows in your contact list(facebook/twitter/google). You can add them to google from the phone, but I prefer to add them from gmail or google voice, as i can type faster on my computer.

I recently reflashed a rom and I checked and found out some of my contacts were missing. I checked my gmail contacts and it's there. I checked to sync all my contacts on my phone but it doesn't show up on my phone. I didn't have a problem with my first flash with the rom. How can I resync the missing contacts back to my phone? Thanks!
Yeah...this is definitely one of the worst changes made to Android by the Samsung TouchWiz interface. I had a G1 also, and really liked not having to worry about phone/sim/google contacts. I just want contacts that are always in sync no matter where I go. This is the one thing that will push me to go AOSP once somebody releases a decent rom. As far a I know, no custom ROMs have gotten contacts to be anything other than TW.

Google Contatcs on the NOOK now working

While most everything works from the rooting process equal to the phone I was not able to import all my google contacts only a handful will import into the Nook (NC). After many tries I found a work-a-round.
Save the contacts in google to (outlook type) CVS file and place it on the external sdcard. Download Navdress Book (the only one of many I tried) and import the contacts.
I still have a very small issue with my screen having everything bump up to the edges, while everything is there just no space around the sides. I am sure I will find some screen font/resolution way to make everything look better. Even if not this is so way cool to use over my Vibrant, as much as I enjoy the screen sharpness the NC is faster (hard to believe)...and larger screen....so I find I read and surf more on it then my phone now. Also being able to connect the NC to the phone I do not need to worry about wifi.
As I was going to get the SamsungTab, yet with their POOR support and software updates I was holding off until next year to see if otherS had a better tab, now I do not need to!
The phone is a phone, searching and maps tool, whereas the NC is a web-surf, email, reader, games, etc. Guess as I write this I would be open to 2/3rd the NC size (about 5" to 6 " thin) tab that had everything the NC and Vibrant has in one package. A "BEST of Both Worlds" kind of wish. Small and light enough to do it all...Hey it is a new year folks...
does this allow you to select contacts within google voice or a mail program? the reason i ask is it seems like a standalone contacts program.
i exported everything to a vcard file and used a program called 'import contacts' to get everyone on my phone (edit - scratch that: my nook). they don't all show up in my contacts app but they can be selected in google voice, k9, etc now. woohoo

Sadly no just have them available to lookup. Not sure what you are referring to about the phone. I have no problem with the Vibrant and Google, just the NC does not bring in nor allow contacts to be selected in gmail, that I have found. Read and reply works just not contacts lookup...
However, I can goto the WEB interface and reach gmail/contatcs and send that way. Can not use the gmail app on the NC unless I type in the full email address, kind of a drag unless replying is all I was pointing out.

that's what i meant. i meant nook, not phone this will make it to where you can actually select contacts.
Edit: just added this to the wiki: Making contacts work
So, what do you do once you have all your contacts on the Nook? Can't call them ... can't launch an email to them ... it's just a glorified address book at that point isn't it?

Sweet - worked like a charm.
... By the way, to get a vcard of your contacts, go to gmail on web, click on contacts on the left side, more actions, export, and choose vcard.

After importing the contacts into Navdress, I found I was able to choose a contact, select the individual contact icon and the email address would automatically load into email program of my choice (K9 for me). Another option. Going the vcard route would not work for some reason.
Thanks here.david and jadambpharm for figuring this out. Have either one of you explored sending emails to groups? I have tried a number of group contact apps without any success. Thanks again.
Thanx for the post here.david

I used another method.
1. Register on soocial.com
2. Import contacts from google
3. install app from market (search soocial in market)
4. Run installed program, enter your registered e-mail and password and import contacts
5. Download and install phonebook 2.0
Everything works fine! It even imported my contacts fotos
Is this method usefull for you?

I have just tested with my nook and two mail apps, gmail and maildroid(i find it more convinient) and it works fine.
the testing procedure was following:
1. Call up phonebook app, find your contact, press on it and if contact has e-mail press email button and select your app to compose message.
2. Call up gmail app, begin typing contact name or email and drop down list appears matching to the keyword and select your contact.
3. Call up maildroid and do same steps at p.2.
All works fine
Note: p.2 and 3 are possible without any contacts manager app, it is available just after importing contacts from soocial account.
I have no groups of contacts thats why i cant test with groups, sorry...

[Question] - How to make gmail the default contact save location?

Does anybody have any idea on how to make GMail the default contact save location? I had 3 options - PC Sync, SIM & Gmail, the default contact save location being PC sync.
Using Titanium Backup, I froze the "PC Sync 1.0.8" service. This removed PC Sync from the above 3 options. But I am Still left with the rest of the 2 options, the new default contact save location being SIM.
Tried freezing the "com.lge.simcontacts 1.0" service. But this doen't remove the SIM option from the contact save locations. It just disables adding new contacts to sim BUT THE OPTION STILL APPEARS AND REMAINS AS THE DEFAULT ONE.
Please help.
Why doesn't anybody answer? Is it because no one knows the answer or because I am the only ignorant person on board here?
I would also like to know how to do this!
Seems like we are the only two guys bothered by this problem.
I've had this trouble as well and not found any answer. You just need to make sure you select your Google account when adding new contacts.
no idea try to search the forum

It should be! After i imported by hand my contacts (on .CSV format) to my gmail account they went to a place in google contacts called "My Contacts" -Note that at the time i was uploading the contacts list in CSV format i said to move it to the said "My Contacts" place!
Then i turned my phone's wifi on and it synched my Gmail contacts onto the phone! after that on "Display" i put PCSynch off , SIM Contacts off and on Gmail i put only show "My Contacts"!
Since my phone is showing my Gmail contacts, whenever i create a new contact (usually on PCSync i never bothered to change it :x) when i turn my gmail on or the android starts synching with google the contact apears on my google's "My contacts" list and therefore it pops back to the android contacts list!
Or so it worked for me! Some ppl say they didn't have that much trouble but hey... i had all my contacts on PCSynch and couldn't synch them to google before and now after all the hassle of importing them by hand... now i can!
Does not work for me. if I add a contact to pc sync, it still doesn't appear on the google contacts list. Have you installed any other application which helps you sync pc sync contacts with google?
Has anybody found out a way to do this yet?
The solution is still evading us. I hope that some developer sees this and provide a solution.
Your question is a a little confusing but I think this is what your after:
To set contact default to Google go into you contact list then press menu and choose view next uncheck the box that says "phone" and now your default is Google

Dude I have the same problem with my Google Talk after installing DeskSMS. I would receive a message like "@desksms.appspotchat.com wants to be able to chat with you, and you rejected a previous request. Okay?" I made the mistake of clicking yes and now I can't seem to remove them from my Google Chat list.
Very annoying!

I just figured it out. go to contacts.google.com & look for Other Contacts on the left-hand side of the screen. All of the appspot contacts are there & you can delete them.
If the previous solution didn't work, you have to re-download the app, there's a feature to remove the desksms contacts and it delete all of them. I did it and it looks all good so far.

Is this feature still there for others, because I have no feature to remove these contacts using the desksms application on my phone?
Ok, so in forgot to sync my contacts after I deleted the desksms contacts so they're back and the feature is gone from the app from what I can see. This sucks.
Sent from my SGH-T989
EDIT: Ok, so I found out a way to delete the contacts if anyone still cares about it:
1) Go to your google contacts
2) Click the "more" tab and export to both Google CSV (in case something goes wrong which it shouldn't) and Outlook CSV (to edit)
3) Open the Outlook CSV into Excel (should be default)
4) Edit to your hearts content!!! (and save!!)
5) Delete all your contacts, be thorough and delete every single thing (don't worry, you made a backup just in case, remember?)
6) Import your new and improved CSV file that you edited earlier and voila, all your regular contacts without the annoying desksms stuff (and anything else you decided to delete/edit)
If this didn't work or messed something else up then just delete everything again and restore the google csv (should be named google.csv I think) and your original contacts will be back.
Hope this works for you guys because it worked for me.
Aaaah. Thanks. Going into Contacts, selecting "Other" and doing a search for "appspotchat.com" showed me all of the contacts. Selected, deleted, done. Appreciate the pointer.

[Q] Cannot copy SIM contacts to phone or sync with Gmaiol

Hi all -
My mom just inherited an AT&T Samsung Galaxy II (rooted, OS ICS 4.0.3, Build IML74K.117) and I am trying to move her contact from her SIM to her phone or, even better sync with her Gmail account.
From the Contacts app, I'm opening the menu and selecting SIM Management, then choosing Copy Contacts From SIM and selecting the option of the Gmail account (I've also tried selecting the Phone option as well). Instead of going to the screen where I can choose the contacts to copy, the phone just goes back to the SIM Management screen. (I took a screenshot of it but it's been 8 minutes and the text is still in Send mode on her phone.)
Any ideas on what is preventing me from being able to move the contacts? My next move is to take it back to stock and see if that doesn't help but that's really a last resort and something I'm trying to avoid.
Thanks in advance!
Lauren

Hi, thanks for responding...
No, because she is coming from a stone-age phone and has never had anything linked to her Gmail account before, which is also new. So in this case, I'm attempting to transfer the SIM contacts to her phone/Gmail account in order to A) get them on the phone in a more unified manner and B) sync with Gmail so that she now has an online backup of her contacts. She's coming from a Motorola Razr circa 2005. For real.
I couldn't say for sure, but the problem could be that the format in which the Razr stored the contacts is not being read by the SGS2 which is kicking you back out of the menu.
This is probably an old thread but no Gmail sync along with cannot send mms, indicate that you probably have no internet access.
Make sure you do have first, either wifi or mobil data turn on

Nope, the format is universal and can be read by pretty much any phone.
