If I was you id forget about unlocking bootloader or flashing a custom kernal just for now. Just focus on rooting your fone, then installing clock work mod reccovery. Then look for a custom rom, make sure it works on your fone and that you have the correct baseband. There are a lot of topics on everything you need to know,so use the search button to help you and make sure you read everything including posts on topics before you install anything.
Sent from my U20i using xda premium

simple explanation
firmware
>>firmware = the whole software inside your phone (which part of the firmware are bootloader, kernel, ROM, etc )
firmware = custom rom : it is or not ?
>>base on above explanation, so firmware =/= custom rom
content of custom rom = content of folder /system, in your phone internal memory
boot unlock
>>unlock bootloader is required to install custom KERNEL
why need to unlock boot to install
>>you don't need to unlock bootloader to install custom ROM
what is flashing
>>flashing = copying (writing) a firmware (whole or partially) into your phone internal memory
sim lock
>>this issue only used when you unlock bootloader. (caution!!!)
Network providers use sim lock capability to restrict the use of the phones to specific countries and network providers, so if your phone is locked by your gsm operator and you force unlock bootloader, the result your phone will lose it's radio capability (no signal)
to make it clear,
1-2 months ago we use : stock kernel + custom rom with add-on*
(*these add-on called modules, example: dual / multi touch module, overclock module etc.
* these add-on are parts of the custom rom)
now since they've found a way to unlock boot loader, they can modify kernel also, with this modify kernel, they can merge those modules inside the kernel.
basically we can say:
stock kernel + custom rom WITH modules = custom kernel WITH modules + custom rom WITHOUT modules
but of course custom kernel have other benefit beside the modules, so it's your configuration choice
now your steps are:
1. update your firmware to the latest version (2.1.1.A.0.6) via PC companion / SEUS
2. root your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906742
3. install recovery (is needed to install custom rom)
(there are choices: Xrecovery & Clockworkmod recovery/CWM) CWM is more famous these day
4. install your preferable custom rom (+ modules, if they make it separated)(don't forget to backup your stock rom in CWM)
5. optional, unlock bootloader >> install custom kernel >> install custom rom that ready for custom kernel
ps: there is no point to unlock bootloader if you dont install custom kernel

[Q] How To Confirm Our Phone Successful Unlocked The Bootloader

Hi Guys,
Xperia Mini Pro SK17i owner here..
Need your guys help. I'm follow guide from youtube on how to unlocked bootloader for xperia mini pro. my question here is how to check whether my phone is lock or unlock (bootloader)?i try "S1 Tool" and it shows as below:
RUNNING S1_EROM VER "R9A028"
SOFTWARE AID: 0001
LOADER AID: 0001
FLASH ID: "002C/00B3"
LOADER VERSION: "R4A069"
"RUNNING S1_EROM VER" should be:
1. "R9A028" = locked
2. "r9A028" = unlocked
correct me if I'm wrong. but when i connect to SEUS or Sony PC Companion and try to update or restore it will show "the phone contains modified software that cannot be updated"..
i need confirmation here before i proceed into next level by installing custom rom since for now, all the custom rom required device with unlocked bootloader..
Thanks.
Regards,
texas5
If you SE software is giving that error then your phone is definitely unlocked. Even if it wasnt unlocked attempting to install a custom rom wouldnt harm your phone since you cant flash a kernel using fastboot until your phone is unlocked, you would simply get an error.
Dial *#*#7378423#*#* then service info>configuration. If rooting status Bootloader unlocked : Yes then you are unlocked.
thanks T3sla & CircuitBug,
i think my phone already unlocked since both SEUS & PC Companion giving "the phone contains modified software that cannot be updated" error.
so i decide to install custom rom and once again this problem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23395358 come again..stuck on the SE Logo but this time I've try with another custom rom..
i don't know what else I'm doing wrong or any step that i miss out to install custom rom..below are my step:
device: SK17i
firmware: 4.0.2.A.0.58
1. root my SK17i - confirm by "superuser" app in my phone
2. installing recovery (CWM) - successful (can reboot in recovery mode)
3. unlocked bootloader - check via S1 Tool - RUNNING S1_EROM VER = "R9A028" - however both SE software can't be use so i assume my SK17i successful unlocked.
4. installing custom rom - via CWM - wipe all & install from zip file in SD
a. HYBROM v14 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1373435 - stuck on SE Logo
b. Xperia Mini ST15a/i Clean 'n' Tweaked - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417621&page=7 - stuck on SE Logo
any advice or suggestion guys..
Thanks.
You need custom kernel to be installed also, that's why after installing ROM it gets stuck.

Kernel is a part of the phone's system, that starts the whole system. Stock kernel can only run the stock firmware, that means if you want to install a custom ROM, you also have to install a custom kernel.
In this forum section, http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1242, you can find many custom kernels with lots of different possibilities. Just pick one, which supports your phone. Depending on the ROM, not all kernels might work, although I have had no problems with X Kernel or Rage Kernel. Both seem good ones.
Most kernels already include ClockworkMod Recovery also.
You need to download the kernel(it is a boot.img file), then install it via fastboot or Flashtool, either way you need unlocked bootloader. Install kernel before installing custom ROM.

[Q] Help me if I got it right with unlocking / flashing of european "Atrix"

Hi,
I would like to ask if I got it right, don't want to brick my new device.
It is a german "Atrix" from vodafone with Android 2.3.4.
The first thing I do is to backup Apps I want to save and use in my custom ROM.
Senond I want to do "fastboot oem unlock" and unlock the device.
Then I flash the CWM recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
From the CWM I can make a full backup of the current stock Android.
Then I can flash a custom ROM.
Please tell me any steps I may missed.
Also it would be kind if you can post any experience with the german Atrix without 4G.
Kind regards
Thomas
Hi,
According to this complete tutorial (valid for Atrix US and EU), the requirements for installing custom ROMs are :
1/ Root (to backup apps and apply deep customization) => you're OK
2/ Unlock bootloader (to flash recovery) => you're OK
3/ Flash a good recovery (like CWM, to flash ROM, kernel, MODs, etc.) => you're OK
So I think you can start enjoying your Atrix !

That's my article on how I unlocked/rooted my European Atrix.

[Q] Rooting, unrooting etc - new to Xperia Live

Hi. I am new to Xperia Live with Walkman and I have some questions.
1. If I root my phone, then is there a way to unroot it and restore warranty?
2. Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695603
Unlocking bootloader lets you install custom kernels and ROMs. If you do it via official way, you lose your guarantee and your DRM keys, that means you will not be able to use TrackID and some other little features. If you patch it via unofficial way (test point method) you lose nothing. Anyway, if you don't intend to change your ROM, don't unlock it
Click to collapse
So, what are official and unofficial ways? And don't I have to root phone to unlock bootloader first? Or I have to unlock bootloader to root?
OK, I've read about all of them and quite understanded it.
3. Could someone give me quadrant (may be standard, but the newest one) score from fast rom for my Live?
4. To get into recovery I have to flash it first or it have it installed already as it is in some samsungs? And do I understand well that to flash recovery (or use it to install rom) I have to unlock bootloader?
5. If I flash unofficial rom (first unlock bootloader etc) and want to get back to stock one and locked loader and have warranty back, then what should I do. Is there a way to do this?
Ok, I've read about some stuff. Now I know that I unlock bootloader and flash a kernel with a recovery. But how can I get official, signed, stock rom and how to install it?
And before flashing custom rom do I have to set partitions, as it was with HD2? Like /system /cache /data etc...

Partitions are already there, ROMs only affect /system(few also /data), /cache and /data must be formatted if you install another ROM.
Official, signed, stock ROM can be downloaded via Update Service and PC Companion. You can create a Flashtool .ftf file, there is some information on the information about it.
So I can flash custom rom and there will be possibility to get back to stock one? And what is this flashtool?
Ehhh, I need to read more
I have a tft file with a stock rom, but is there a difference between branded software and unbranded? I use Tmobile PL so when I will flash any other stock roms will they accept warranty? And when is recovery being removed? When flashing stock rom?
And could you please tell me more about creating tft (I haven't found any info about it on Xperia Live)
OK, I've found out how to make ftf. But does it restore warranty? And what with these differences between branded and unbranded?
OK, I'm such an idiot I've just looked into Tutorials | Firmware | FAQ and found that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568792
Sorry for wasting time...

[Q] Flash Kernel

i need a help i wish install
B eXperience v2 【AROMA】【Fastest+Smoothest】
I do not understand anything of this step:
Now flash Munjenis CWM kernel
First of all..for this step, u need a unlocked bootloader!
i assume if u have asked this question...then u obviously dont have ur phone bootloader unlocked!
my advise-either unlock ur bootloader (involves risk of permanently losing warranty)..else, try out the method to flash the rom on locked bootloader (but u need to be rooted)..
all the steps are same for flashing except u dont need flash the kernel..as a result, u dont get memory tweaks also!
P.S-the step i mentioned for flashing on locked bootloader is rom specific!

Hi there!
First things first!
I assume you have Stock rom,so the first step is to Root your device. Here you will find a complete guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460.
Then you have to install CWM from here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020893
After having installed CWM,make a full back up of your current rom/phone configuration (for safety reasons),it's very easy to do it,from inside the CWM menu.
Then, reboot your phone normally and move the eXperience v2.1 zip file into your internal SD Card (NOT the micro-sd of your phone)
Reboot in recovery mode (CWM) and choose Install zip from SD Card.
This will flash your new rom to your device.
I have used the eXperience v2.1 rom,on locked bootloader,in my phone, for a long time and i can assure you that it is excellent!
Can i flaah any rom using CWM?
Sent from my ST25i using xda app-developers app
yes, for rom use CWM for the kernel Fastboot
is what I do
evoicyc william
thank you very much I finally installed

Please feedback, and don't forget the backup !
is it 5.1 or 5.1.1?
The quick way to root any ROM, including the newly released 5.1.1 is, if you have an unlocked bootloader:
- Hotboot any custom kernel with a recovery (fastboot)
- Flash SuperSU
- Reboot
If you want CWM/TWRP:
- Flash NUT's Dual Recovery kernel through fastboot
- Reboot
You're now rooted, and you have recovery.
NOTE: If you have no idea how to use fastboot, then you can use QuickIMG. It lets you flash .IMGs very easily without needing to use any commands. Do however read the instructions provided before you use it.
It's also a good idea to learn how to get out of a sticky situation in case something goes wrong. If you want to be on the safe side when testing kernels, hotboot, or boot an IMG/kernel instead of flashing. Once you see that the kernel is indeed working, and you're not experiencing any bootloops or red LED blinking, then you can safely flash it to disk.
Note: Hotbooting means that the device will only boot the kernel once, so it doesn't really flash it to the device. Flashing a kernel writes it to the device, making it permanent until you replace it by flashing a different kernel yourself.

I Didn't see a pre-rooted firmware, that's why i put this guide, if someone can do it and upload the firmware that's would be awesome .
hi there. I just want to say that after following your guide I could not get in to recovery after flashing the 5.1.1 ftf minus the kernel. when turning the phone on it goes straight to normal boot but it doesn't. it goes in to a boot loop. some how it removes dual recovery and can't flash SuperSU there for loosing root and yes I was rooted with dual recovery. could you explain with more details how to please because I did as you said and didn't work
