[Q] How To Confirm Our Phone Successful Unlocked The Bootloader - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

Hi Guys,
Xperia Mini Pro SK17i owner here..
Need your guys help. I'm follow guide from youtube on how to unlocked bootloader for xperia mini pro. my question here is how to check whether my phone is lock or unlock (bootloader)?i try "S1 Tool" and it shows as below:
RUNNING S1_EROM VER "R9A028"
SOFTWARE AID: 0001
LOADER AID: 0001
FLASH ID: "002C/00B3"
LOADER VERSION: "R4A069"
"RUNNING S1_EROM VER" should be:
1. "R9A028" = locked
2. "r9A028" = unlocked
correct me if I'm wrong. but when i connect to SEUS or Sony PC Companion and try to update or restore it will show "the phone contains modified software that cannot be updated"..
i need confirmation here before i proceed into next level by installing custom rom since for now, all the custom rom required device with unlocked bootloader..
Thanks.
Regards,
texas5

If you SE software is giving that error then your phone is definitely unlocked. Even if it wasnt unlocked attempting to install a custom rom wouldnt harm your phone since you cant flash a kernel using fastboot until your phone is unlocked, you would simply get an error.

Dial *#*#7378423#*#* then service info>configuration. If rooting status Bootloader unlocked : Yes then you are unlocked.

thanks T3sla & CircuitBug,
i think my phone already unlocked since both SEUS & PC Companion giving "the phone contains modified software that cannot be updated" error.
so i decide to install custom rom and once again this problem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23395358 come again..stuck on the SE Logo but this time I've try with another custom rom..
i don't know what else I'm doing wrong or any step that i miss out to install custom rom..below are my step:
device: SK17i
firmware: 4.0.2.A.0.58
1. root my SK17i - confirm by "superuser" app in my phone
2. installing recovery (CWM) - successful (can reboot in recovery mode)
3. unlocked bootloader - check via S1 Tool - RUNNING S1_EROM VER = "R9A028" - however both SE software can't be use so i assume my SK17i successful unlocked.
4. installing custom rom - via CWM - wipe all & install from zip file in SD
a. HYBROM v14 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1373435 - stuck on SE Logo
b. Xperia Mini ST15a/i Clean 'n' Tweaked - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417621&page=7 - stuck on SE Logo
any advice or suggestion guys..
Thanks.

You need custom kernel to be installed also, that's why after installing ROM it gets stuck.

Kernel is a part of the phone's system, that starts the whole system. Stock kernel can only run the stock firmware, that means if you want to install a custom ROM, you also have to install a custom kernel.
In this forum section, http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1242, you can find many custom kernels with lots of different possibilities. Just pick one, which supports your phone. Depending on the ROM, not all kernels might work, although I have had no problems with X Kernel or Rage Kernel. Both seem good ones.
Most kernels already include ClockworkMod Recovery also.
You need to download the kernel(it is a boot.img file), then install it via fastboot or Flashtool, either way you need unlocked bootloader. Install kernel before installing custom ROM.

If I was you id forget about unlocking bootloader or flashing a custom kernal just for now. Just focus on rooting your fone, then installing clock work mod reccovery. Then look for a custom rom, make sure it works on your fone and that you have the correct baseband. There are a lot of topics on everything you need to know,so use the search button to help you and make sure you read everything including posts on topics before you install anything.

simple explanation
firmware
>>firmware = the whole software inside your phone (which part of the firmware are bootloader, kernel, ROM, etc )
firmware = custom rom : it is or not ?
>>base on above explanation, so firmware =/= custom rom
content of custom rom = content of folder /system, in your phone internal memory
boot unlock
>>unlock bootloader is required to install custom KERNEL
why need to unlock boot to install
>>you don't need to unlock bootloader to install custom ROM
what is flashing
>>flashing = copying (writing) a firmware (whole or partially) into your phone internal memory
sim lock
>>this issue only used when you unlock bootloader. (caution!!!)
Network providers use sim lock capability to restrict the use of the phones to specific countries and network providers, so if your phone is locked by your gsm operator and you force unlock bootloader, the result your phone will lose it's radio capability (no signal)
to make it clear,
1-2 months ago we use : stock kernel + custom rom with add-on*
(*these add-on called modules, example: dual / multi touch module, overclock module etc.
* these add-on are parts of the custom rom)
now since they've found a way to unlock boot loader, they can modify kernel also, with this modify kernel, they can merge those modules inside the kernel.
basically we can say:
stock kernel + custom rom WITH modules = custom kernel WITH modules + custom rom WITHOUT modules
but of course custom kernel have other benefit beside the modules, so it's your configuration choice
now your steps are:
1. update your firmware to the latest version (2.1.1.A.0.6) via PC companion / SEUS
2. root your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906742
3. install recovery (is needed to install custom rom)
(there are choices: Xrecovery & Clockworkmod recovery/CWM) CWM is more famous these day
4. install your preferable custom rom (+ modules, if they make it separated)(don't forget to backup your stock rom in CWM)
5. optional, unlock bootloader >> install custom kernel >> install custom rom that ready for custom kernel
ps: there is no point to unlock bootloader if you dont install custom kernel

[Q] Rooting/Flashing Advice

Hi,
Just looking for some advice really, I'm looking to root/flash my girlfriends's mini pro (SK17i), it's currently running GB (4.0.2.A.0.62) which as I understand cannot be rooted from that particular version? The phone was bought 2nd hand and the bootloader is already unlocked.
Questions I have are:
1. From reading the forums, I was going to go with stock ICS rom with rage kernel, as I'm looking for stability/battery life, or are there better combinations of custom ROM/kernel out there, for this purpose?
2. If I do stay with stock ICS is it necessary that I downgrade before rooting then flashing? Or can I flash directly to ICS?
I should be fine with the whole process of rooting flashing the phone, but would greatly appreciate the advice!!
Again Many Thanks
1. Since you have a unlocked bootloader it's possible to root .62 firmware by just flashing a prerooted kernel like the rage kernel for gb.
2.I've been using rage ics kernel with stock Sony ics Rom, it is very much stable and battery standby is really good.
3. First you flash the ics ftf using flashtool and boot the device. then power down the device and enter into flashmode and flash rage kernel for ics. You don't have to root your phone separately, once you flash the rage kernel for ics you're phone will be automatically rooted and busybox will be installed.
You don't have to downgrade at all! You have a unlocked bootloader man! Just flash the rage kernel and your phone will be rooted!
Just make sure you flash the correct version of rage kernel. 3.2 for ics. 3.0 for gingerbread.
hit thanks if I've helped!

Thanks for the swift reply!
So to clarify, am I right in thinking flash the ICS ROM first then once done reboot and flash the Kernel next?
I dont need to flash the kernel on GB first?
Also any opinions on Panic Kernel, is that also prerooted?
Cheers

1. That`s the point. Normally, to install a custom rom via clockworkmod you flash the kernel first and after that you install the rom.
But now you don't install a custom rom, you flash the ftf and this ftf will overwrite the kernel (kernel is a boot.img). So after you have flashed the ftf you can just plug phone off, plug in in fastboot mode again and flash the custom kernel. Then just reboot (you can reboot before flashing kernel if you like, but that wouldn't change anything)
2. No you don't need, just flash the kernel for the rom you like.
3. Yes panic should be prerooted, too
Ya you are right! No need to flash gb kernel .

Tbh if you're looking for good stabilty and battery life GB is still the go to....Rage kernel is DEfinitely not the best kernel for battery life
Panic is prerooted, its not harsh on battery life, but it has a few minor bugs, usb only connects in media transfer mode and the cmw 6 it has has reported some issues when doing nand backups...The best kernbel for stability and battery in my opinion (i tested them all) is Mesa kernel, rage and panic are more for performance and performance usually means less battery life
Okay guys, flashed stock ICS ROM fine!
But now trying to flash MESA kernel using Fastboot Toolbox within Flashtool and I'm getting the error that my device isn't rooted?
Tried with a few other kernels and the same problem? I was under the impression flashing the kernel would also root the device?

Hmm the log looks like your phone's bootloader isn't unlocked yet. Please power phone on and type *#*#7378423#*#* and go to service info -> configuration -> rooting status and tell us what is written there. Cause it must work
Yeah it has bootloader unlock allowed: yes
Which I'm guessing it means it isn't unlocked at present?
Sorry was being stupid I thought it was already unlocked! I can just follow the tutorial sticky to unlock right? Then give it another go?

Okay you must know what you want, two options:
1. Just root phone, and uninstall the crap. This maybe won't void warranty, cause if you unroot you can bring it to service again.
2. Unlock bootloader:
1. You unlock via official method -> you void warranty but you can install a custom kernel for better performance or other custom roms (for example cyanogenmod)
2. You unlock via testpoint method, which can be relocked and maybe sony won't notice, but that's more dangerous and I wouldn't do it.
These are the methods you have, just choose one
Btw for rooting you needn't unlock bootloader, choose your current software version in my rooting guide and follow the steps to root

Ya it looks like you haven't unlocked your bootloader yet .
It's better to unlock via the official method. You'll lose DRM keys (google it) and remember all your phone data (except memory card data) will be erased To be on the safer side just remove the memory card prior to unlocking. Sync up your contacts to your google account or take a backup of your contacts in your memory card.
YOU'LL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. YOU CANNOT USE SEUS TO UPDATE YOUR PHONE SOFTWARE instead you have to use flashtool which is not a concern at all and after unlocking please do not accept any over the air (ota) Sony software updates, IT WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE .
Just for your information there is also a guide to unbrick the device which is bricked due to fota update but you would not want to brick it in the first place would you? .
Look at Sony's official bootloader unlocking page for further instructions and keep your IMEI handy it'll ask for it (dial *#06# for your IMEI or look at the phone's packaging).
Happy unlocking!

Root, bootloader, cwm and ROM

I can´t get my head around this... some help, please?
I have a rooted Ray with firmware .587. Works fine. I have also used X-parts to install CWM that I know is not "the real deal".
Now I want to install MIUI. For that I have to use a different kernel. Fine! After a lot of hassle I got the latest Flashtool installed and the driverpack. When I enter fastbootmode I get the message that my phone is not rooted... wtf? I have flashed ROM´s for God´s sake...

So... my questions now is as follows:
1. Witch version of Flashtool can I use to unlock my bootloader? I can´t seem to find the option in the latest version 0-9.9.0
2. Why does Flashtool say that I´m not rooted? I used this guide to root: http://androidadvices.com/root-sony-xperia-ray-official-ics-404-firmware-tutorial/
3. Can I get permanent CWM installed on my phone? With unlocked bootloader, right?
I have tried the latest SDK but I just don´t understand it... and then I read that Flashtool can both unlock bootloader and flash CWM. For the record.... I have already got the code from SE to unlock my bootloader.
Help, please?

Flashtool means that your bootloader is not unlocked or not rooted. You first have to unlock bootloader in order to flash custom kernel. If you have blue led on fastboot mode then follow the instructions in the Sony's officially way to unlock bootloader . you should have searched more and posted in Q&A section

You said you've unlocked your bootloader. Most custom ROM's require custom kernels which again require an unlocked bootloader.
Anyway, to unlock your bootloader you have to charge your phone to 100% and follow this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254087
To flash a custom kernel you will need the flashtool provided in the above tutorial and a custom kernel of your choice.

Hi mate go here and have a quick read, it don't take long to upgrade to 2.3.3 -
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/software/phones/xperia-x10/
Read and follow simple instruction's to get back to stock 2.3.3
If that still don't work then download and install - update_service_setup-2.11.4.11 (SEUS) Work's every time for me.
Then follow above instruction's for rooting etc.
Make sure you are using the latest version of flashtool's for - rooting - installing recovery - unlocking boot loader.
Hope this help's. :fingers-crossed:

1) your phone is not bricked, relax
2) you have only 2 ways for flashing: through CWM with a zip or with flashtool a ftf
3) "Search for stock 2.3.3 generic ftf file, flash with flashtool then root"
4) first unlock bootloader, read carefully instructions in flashtool software, it takes time and many reboots in if I remember. then flash a CUSTOM kernel with flashtool for your rom,
5) enter into cwm and wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition and advanced/wipe dalvik, then install zip from sd card, it will install your custom rom.

5) enter into cwm and wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition and advanced/wipe dalvik, then install zip from sd card, it will install your custom rom.

I read in the thread it saved some one else from a similar problem.
Just follow the instruction's - Drag and Drop - FTF File in - Flashtool
It's very easy as long as you tick the box saying No Final Verification.
Hope it Help's...

It wont coz his bootloader is locked. He probably can try flashing stock base rom that support LB. But it might didnt worked cause 1.6 might have older baseband version.

Stuck at SE (FeraLab)

Model: X10a
Country: Philippines
OS: Android 2.1 update1
Build Number: 2.0.2.A.0.24
Rooted: Yes
Unlock Bootloader: I don't know if my device is Unlocked.
Locked Bootloader: I don't know if my device is Locked.
The Steps before the Problem Stuck SE
* I was unsure about the posted requirements;
-- Any Bootloader (locked or unlocked)
-- Latest GB FeraKernel if you have unlocked bootloader (no need for drivers - they are included in ROM. Kernel for locked bootloader is included in ROM package).
*I downloaded the FeraLab_v27_~Fire~.zip
*I followed the steps;
* AROMA Installation wizard, I cant click the next button (or the screen is not responding)
*I successfully installed the Rom using the volume key and home key as the (ok and next back button)
*After the installation, I restart the device according to the instruction in the wizard
*Now I'am stuck on SE
Now my Questions Are;
* Do I download the Wrong FeraLab Rom?
* Is it Not Compatible with my Device? If Yes Compatible for FeraLab Rom. What version of FeraLab is Compatible with me?
*Do i need to use some kernels? Since I was not sure about the posted requirements

I just remembered. There might be a chance that it's an at&t device and 2.3.3 might not be available via SEUS. What you can do is change the region of you build.prop to get the updated fw.

it is a typical problem with the feralab rom you must have chosen unlocked bootloader in the aroma while you have locked one or the opposite just reflash your phone to 2.3.3 and try again
If its stuck on SE means the kernel has not been flashed yet, actually before installing the rom you should flash the 2.3 ftf (do a Google search for it, it's there)

ROM is for both bootloader but follow kernel flashing according to your bootloader either locked or unlocked. It is available in feralab official site
FOR LOCKED BOOTLOADERS:
-- Download ZIP file called nearly same as [LB]FeraKernel-GB-xxx.zip and copy it to SDcard.
-- Boot to xRecovery and flash zip(all drivers are already in kernel zip).
-- Reboot your device twice and you're done.
FOR UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS:
-- Download FTF file called nearly same as FeraKernel-GB-xxx.ftf and put it to /firmware folder in FlashTool root folder.
-- Download ZIP file with 'DRIVERS' label and put it to SDcard
-- Flash FTF kernel file using FlashTool, and boot directly to recovery (press BACK-Key on led light).
-- Flash 'DRIVERS' zip and reboot your phone twice. Done.
