I have a question whether it's possible to backup the original kernel before to flash a modded one, so that i can go a step back if i have problems. I can backup the whole ROM in Recovery that is also a solution, but maybe there is a chance to backup only the needed stuff and not the whole ROM.
As far as I know you can only backup your kernel by backing up your entire rom

At least in Version 2.2.1 of the Thunderg Custom Recovery (search the developers section) from getitnowmarketing it is possible to selectively backup only the kernel.
If the kernel to be saved is part of a stock ROM it can also be extracted from the ROM using the android kitchen... although this is much more complex.

why you need to do that? if something happened, just go into recovery and reflash the last good one.

you can save/put the kernel (as the original flashable zip file) on your sdcard.

hey, if i backup my stock rom with xRecovery and install a custom one, then i will be able to restore my old rom back and make my x10 mini pro as it was before the flashing?
thanks in advance.
Yes, you'll just have to go back into xrec and use restore. But i'd use CWMrec which is more stable.
That is correct. I backed up mine using the Xrecovery before I started to play with custom roms. I already had numerous chances to restore it and it worked just fine.

thanks! is this guide good?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117713
and also suggest me one rom witch is stable with dualtouch and without LOTS of bugs, something usable
I've used all Gingerbread roms and Paul's one seems to be more stable than the others but its kinda random... I've got bugs no one else has experienced So lucky...
and also, will xrecovery backup files working on CWM for restoring or i need to take a new backup?
CWM supports xrec backups
Yes normally it works, or you can do another backup with CMW before flashing custom rom
Put this in system/bin/ with root explorer and reboot. CWMrec will be installed. (only the system folder files)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PQF0B1Z0
CWM can generally be viewed as the new and improved xRecovery. This is not entirely correct, but in general terms it can be considered to be - especially when it comes to X10 ROM's. So yes, backups of stock ROM should work just fine as long as:
xRecovery backups can be restored in xRecovery and CWM.
CWM backups can only be restored in CWM.
Also please note you posted in the developent forum. What you asked is a general question, it's not about development
actually this is a great idea, you will avoid a lot of mishaps with roms that way

I have been around a lot of ROMs. They all kind of look the same CM6 or CM7.
But they do not feel the same. I have fallen for FroyoBread.
If you get into some trouble installing CWM, try this small TUT i made for manual install:
[TUT] Installing ClockworkMod Recovery for X10 Mini Pro on stock ROM
You may also want to look at this: [TUT] From stock ROM to custom ROM for n00bs (X10 mini pro)
Be sure, if your ROM needs an EXT-partition for Apps2SD or uses native Apps2SD. The ROM dev should include this info in the description for the ROM.
Hey people !
I just want to ask a quick question. When you do a backup on xRecovery or CWM, does it backup the kernel too ?
So, if yes, it means that whatever you install after your backup, you won't need to flash the kernel again with flashtool (i mean, using a computer) right ?
And, if no, I suppose it means that if I want to restore a backup, I have to reflash the old kernel (or a compatible one) ?
(I'm asking this because I want to try the CyanogenMod 9 (Android 4.0.3) which seems to be good enough. But I'm currently on MIUI 4.0 (2.3.7), so if it goes wrong with CMod ...)
Thanks !

Sorry to say but on our phones no it does not... you have to flash kernel separately.
on alot of other devices tho this is not the case just an FYI.
Pvy.
Erf, too bad :/
But thank you anyway

Hi guys, new to android, few questions before I flash a ROM.
-Will I need anything else other than the ROM file to flash it?
-If for what ever reason I flash the ROM and something goes wrong how can revert to stock? how do I do this? (I used TWRP when rooting)
-Can I back up the current stock ROM and all my settings/apps?
-I want something with 4.2.2 or higher that's stable, recommendations? (I'm using the AT&T Version).
Thanks!

Make the Nandroid backup of the ROM so incase something goes wrong u can revert back.....

Unfortunately there is no ROM higher than 4.2.2 android for AT&T version of HOX+
Thanks!
What's "android-sdk-windows setup" and where do I find it?
Ok is there a rule against making recommendations of stable roms? I want sense 5, AT&T.

You don't necessarily need this, but you definitely need something to flash the boot.img (contains kernel), otherwise your phone won't boot. Because our phones are S-ON we need to flash the boot.img separately via fastboot, since we are not allowed to flash it in recovery.
Alternatively, get you any toolkit from One X+ forum that works for AT&T too in order to flash the boot.img.
In case something goes wrong or you want to go back to stock, you will need the backup on your phone and at least the boot.emmc.win on your computer, you will also have to flash this boot.img backup in fastboot again to get your backup working.
To your question with the rom recommendation, I am using ViperX+ 2.0.2, it has Sense 5, a lot of tweaks, also a custom kernel included, and works stable so far. I haven't tested any other roms but u should definitely check that one out.
A last tip from me: If your phone stucks on the boot loop although u used the right boot.img, open your rom.zip and extract the boot.img from there, that is what took me hours to find out because the one provided by the developers did not work
Just this mitnute rooted my GS3. I used odin and the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4. Everything we smoothly, I can see Super User on my phone, however, I cannot see Clockworkmod Recovery anywhere on my phone. Do I need to install it separately?? Thanks in advance guys :good:
CF auto root is the recommended path to root, it won't install CWM.

Then u can flash custom recoveries. U dun have to use cwm. U can use others like twrp, philz. Btw dun use the apps in play store to flash the recoveries. Google search "gt-i9300 (the custom recovery u wan)" and find it.

It's recommended you flash a custom recovery regardless if u want to flash some mods or roms. It always comes in handy and you have the option to backup the whole system and create an image file, so you'll be safe, if anything goes wrong with flashing someday or you screw your system, you can always recover it with the custom recovery. Pretty amazing

You need to flash it with ODIN on your pc. Also your custom recovery that you want to flash through ODIN needs to be a .tar file
All done, thanks. just need some decent roms. can you recommend any??

Unfortunately, we are not allowed to recommend stuff here and advertise. Just look under android development and read the comments, I'm sure you'll fine a good one. Don't forget to backup your current system first and your data. When you're done, you can test out roms not worrying much about if they work or not

Mod Edit
As ^^^meeklosh^^^ suggests:
"Best" or "Recommend" ROM/kernel posts are not allowed on XDA.
Please test these things for yourself.
This is the only way you will get an unbiased opinion, and then, you can decide for yourself if it meets YOUR needs.
Don't forget to make a nandroid before you start.

So how can we backup stock kernel? I want to know too.
Flashify can do that.
TWRP has option to backup boot partition, but haven't used that, so can't tell if this backup contains kernel, maybe somebody can tell this.
