Apple is always a year or two behind in technology and then make it seem like it is new and they introduced it.

And unfortunately, for the general public, they do believe that they introduced it. Watch. Give it a couple of months and most technologically retarded people will be claiming this is one of the features that they have over Android.
I don't know if Siri is better or not since I haven't tried it, but what I do know is that of all the voice recognition software that I've used, Google's is the best by a very very very long shot.

A co-worker, whom I would say is one such person who would believe what Apple tells him. He is thinking about upgrading his Iphone just to get the new Siri. He said that there was nothing else like that on phones and he thought it was cool.
I told him that I talk into my phone all the time instead of typing, and it rarely makes mistakes
I think he had a brain seizer when I told him that.

it was supposed to be a joke post siri is absolute rubbish love google voice though it rocks

Last night after telling a friend of mine that Apple stock dropped shortly after they revealed the iP4s, he mentioned that it may not be a huge upgrade but that Siri makes it all worth while, revolutionizing the way we use our phones. I quote "With Siri you can tell your phone to text someone and dictate the text message!" I lol'd for a little while.
I wonder how long Apple will be able to get away with these kinds of updates... you know, the ones that bring minimal changes though sell millions.

Siri is completely different than what's available in Android right now. Sure, it can do the whole voice to text thing, but it's also a little smarter. Just watch the demo. You can ask the current weather, and it'll find out about where you're at now, then you can say "How about Chicago?" and it'll remember that you were talking about the weather and find out the weather in Chicago. It's not groundbreaking, but it's not what's currently available in Android

yeah, I think we all just assumed the OP was talking about the Voice Search/Command features...

I would be willing to bet Siri shares a lot of her source code with google's voice recognition

I think the benefit to siri(note I HATE apple) is that it seems to not need exact commands, like the do I need a raincoat today in the commericial. And the whole talking back and reading text out loud. That being said I Hope to see lots of yuppies yelling at iPhones soon!
I'm hoping voice search gets revamped on Ice Cream Sandwich, I read some where they are prepared to update all the core google apps as soon as it drops. Most people I meet don't even know it's there. thats really a shame

Can anybody really say which is better from watching a damn demo? Hell..it's not even out and already deciding which is better. It's like watching a demo for a car commercial without driving it.

My girlfriend has an iphone 4 (from her parents), and back in my EVO 4G days we were messing around with her iphone voice commands and my Google voice commands and mine would get nearly everything right and hers would get nearly everything totally wrong It was pretty funny.

I was sitting with my wife and we saw something about siri on the news... And the clip they used was "set alarm for 6:00am".... and they said it was a first and revolutionary... I was like wtf.... My phone already does that... That's BS..
how can they call revolutionary when my phone already does that..

It may be able to set the alarm, but can it do this?
HTC Incredible - Speech Recognition

It's silly and moot to compare them right now since Siri isn't out for the general public. However using iPhone's previous voice recognition has sucked. All Google needs to do is simply implement it better (like a guy here posted earlier about how the phone "remembers" you're asking about the weather) which I reckon should be easy to do.
Not praising Google or anything, but out of all the voice recognition software I've used (and that's quite a lot, always found the concept interesting) Google's is the only one that I've had the least errors with. I even try to confuse it on purpose at times.
The thing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth is that this will (probably) only be available for the 4S when pretty much every other iPhone will have the capability of doing it. They're re-releasing almost the same iPhone 4 phone with exclusive software. That's why I don't buy Apple, they shaft their costumers.
Oh and before people start saying Apple invented this and are innovators: Apple Buys Siri, A Mobile Assistant App, As War With Google Heats Up. Great for them to have implemented it, but lets be honest, it's nothing new.

iPhone owners already can say nothing. Their cloud "innovation"... we've had that via Google for years. Siri... we've had that for a while too. Search the market for Jeannie (AKA Voice Actions). I put Voice Actions up against Siri the other day at lunch and Siri got literally every question borked. Voice Actions on Android did much better. We asked Siri "What are the nine planets". It said, "I found six planets... the closest is 2.2 miles from you." I hope not! We asked Voice Actions the same thing and it came up with a picture of the solar system plus a description of the planets. Other questions went similarly. The iPhone junkies at the table were REALLY impressed when I asked Voice Actions "Show me some boobies". Then I showed them the results and said, "Try THAT on your iPhone!"

Hrmm, I think part of it on anyone other than Apple's OS definitely has to do with Apple becoming what they advertised against. The breakout Apple commercial was that woman coming and throwing a sledgehammer at Big Brother - one way of doing things, one computer, one order.
They became that - they advertise artistic and non-conformist and people line up and say "I'm so different" as they purchase something they can't make a change to without jail breaking the OS.
Last I checked, if you want to develop for iOS you have to pay to play. I may be off on that as it has been a while since I checked.
Apple shooting lawsuits left and right for "stolen innovations" such as "slide to wake up" have not been engendering kindness.
The marketing and legal departments have been fueling the dislike, and posers who get phones for a status symbol.
There's a long and well documented lead in to the hate, and in the end it works extremely well to line various company's coffers.

And yet, they sell more and more phones everyday. I loathe the company itself. I like their products. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch are GREAT devices, but they're not Android. And they're not even close, IMO. I have an iPad issued to me from work. The only thing I use it for is to read, watch movies (that I get outside of iTunes), and listen to music (Pandora/Shoutcast/Music I download outside of iTunes).

I think there's also some sort inherent disconnect between camps.
Apple people think they have the greatest device because it looks pretty.
Android people think they have the greatest device because the hardware is faster and you can make it look pretty.
Apple people think that if you have to work to make your device look and perform awesome that it's you who is making it awesome, not the product. (IE you win Android fail)
Android people think that if you can't make it look and perform like you want then you're a moron or the phone is crap.
It's sort of like a broken down 57 Chevy. An Apple lover looks and sees rust and decay, and Android user sees potential - HTC didn't make Sense awesome, but I can.
It all gets worse when you have people on both sides who don't want to learn anything and believe their respective marketing departments.
Any interest in this or shall we keep debating Apples to Orang-uh hum! Droids?
my dislike for the company is in the fact they spout innovation yet they are always a year behind the rest. hell look windows 7 phone has 4g now where is it for the almighty iphone? They spout innovation on their new ios and android has already had it on of their phones for a year. and the masses to dumb to realize they are paying extra money for a phone that is at least a year behind the curve. And yet the iphone fan boys think their phone is the best then i ask what makes it better then i pull out my evo 3d and im like had that since.... and had that since..... their ignorance drives me up the wall

Well I see in a different way, sure iPhone 4s looks outdated because it doesn't have lte or WiMAX, in my experience lte is really nice too bad it has more lost signal then 3G and WiMAX is ok but man does it suck, I used 4G on my OG evo for a few months and stop using it , it just sucks I prefer 3G also in battery life 4G sucks at that right now, they need to come out with a new battery tech or wtv, I have an iPhone 4S, evo 3d, nexus s (tmobile) and my old 3GS and after playing with them I prefer both, i do prefer an iPad instead of android tablet but that might because of the apps, is nice to read books on my iPad or watch YouTube, and some apps for work , if android tablets would have a nice spreadsheets app and maybe some better apps ill probably go for it, but maybe another 6 months before that, the new asus table (quad core) looks nice but will see

Apple made the smartphone stylish. Treo made the smartphone useful. I was checking corporate email while apple was still ensuring cases expose their logo on the back.
If anyone started using siri other than apple, they will shut you down quicker than you can brag to your friends about it.
The andiod os was oringinally going to be the google os back in like 2004 but when things didnt work out and google saw that the iphone take off they applied it to smart phones

So is Svoice better then Siri?

I'm skeptical:
If I want to make fun of my friends with their i**** I say "ask siri what the weather is like in fuerteventura"
If the iSheep does, siri answers after an eternity "I don't know"
an eternity later it she says "Shall I look for you on the internet?"
if you say "yes", you end up with a picture of the island.
Then I take my SGS2, say "weather fuerteventura" in google voice search and seconds later the brower opens with the usual weather graphic.
The iSheeps say it's because it's the german version of siri. But I say BS!
We'll see....
Watching someone trying to get siri to work in a noisy cafe or street is very amusing, they look like such idiots.
They would rather spend 5 minutes trying to get the stupid phone to understand them than actually do it themselves in 5 seconds by tapping the screen a few times.

S-voice does much worse in that video "The joker are taking a fat?" although, of course, this is only the english version.
Thing is, though, as others have pointed out, both do pretty badly in real life. Voice commands are little more than a marketing gimmick right now, good only for performing basic tasks or showing off. Indeed, there's a class action lawsuit on Siri for being portrayed as more effective than she really is.
S-voice and Siri both works exactly same kind. But S3 has more advance features than iPhone 4S. So for now S3 is better, but iPhone 5 will come that can change the whole phone market.
Iphone 5 will come out and disenfranchise all the fanboys because the apple snake no longer has its spiritual head ruling the design process with an iron fist.
We will see i guess, totally not expecting magic though.

I actually look forward to this too, but I'm going to make the snooze function react to the word "poopypants", because wouldn't that just be great? With the SGS3, "poopypants" can be the first word you say every day, setting the tone for the rest of your day AND annoying the hell out of the wife after a while as an added bonus!
On another thread someone has already confirmed it does nothing without a connection even when its a local request like opening an app.
As to voice control I like it when it can go directly to something that would otherwise take multiple clicks or drilling into menus. Like in my car I can push one button and say "play the Rolling Stones" and it gets it every time. Nice and easy, no drilling into menus, no muss, no fuss. I could also say "temperature, 72 degrees" and it will turn the temp up to 72 but I never do. Its easier to just reach over and spin the knob. The same would be true of the phone. Rather than open the player, scroll to the music, select it, it would be a saving to just name that band and have it playing. On the other hand I'm not sure why I would ask for the weather when I can just tap the screen once and I got it.
there both crap
Like 75% of people who will own this phone, I will never use the voice features, they have always been bad, and I have never been able to find a use for it.
Your voice recognition is bad, and you should feel bad.
I would use it casual, but not professional. ONly to impress friends ;p

Siri be damned.

i skimmed it...still there are a few apps in the market that do a ton if not all of what siri can do right now...
as for moving it back, im going to have to deny that as it doesn't make sense to put it up in general when its app related and doesn't really warrant the need to get huge coverage at this point anyway...If this thing starts to gain traction or become some kind of big huge event then maybe...
but for now app/theme talk is what belongs in this forum, so itll stay here in the mean time...

Judging from the video, this software is way more intuitive than any of the current voice apps. I'm using Speaktoit Assistant and Vlingo right now and they work pretty good, but you have to learn what to say to get it to do what you want.
In this video, the software seems to actually "know" what you mean and what you might mean and convey it back to you in a true conversational tone. In addition, it can differentiate between your "message" and "command" words intutitively.
Looks pretty impressive to me compared to what's currently out there. This seems to be actual AI instead of pattern or keyword recognition used in Vlingo or Speaktoit.

Yeah, I prefer Assistant by speaktoit for Jeanine type functionality. It works pretty well conversationally.
I can't remember why Jeanine didn't work that well for me. Not sure if you watched the SILVIA video or not but it appears to be much more intelligent with seemingly highly advanced memory and cognition.

So when you make the $20.00 donation, you'll receive the app when est. release? Or do you get it now, then updates?

I have been wondering... coulnd't Google file a suit over the drop down notification bar, which Apple is using and was on Android first....?
Google wouldn't and won't do that. It's like the two world heavy weights goin at it. Plus one suit would only open a door for more. And the drop down notification bar is part of android, which is open source. In all honesty, android being open is a good and bad thing. Without android continuously advancing, then snags will become more frequent do to other oems hogging up patents (crapple). Being open though allows any oem to personalize their own version of the os. Android should go closed, and include a small cost to use, just to be able to use the patent system. Jeez, that really made me think. So apple can get a feature that is in vanilla android, copy it and patent it as its own?

No they can't just do that ... Android is protected under open source licencing so they can probably use it but they can't patent

I strongly disagree. If Google closed Android the way iOS is closed, WE stand to lose the most. Android's openness is the main reason there are so many ROMs and MODs out there, the main reason it is so successful (can freely used by any phone maker).
Open source is about having the option to change the product to fit your needs. As a Linux user I value this and I hate how rigid Apple's products are in this regard - they make all the decisions and the user has no say in any of it because, as Apple sees it, the user is too dumb to know what is best for him or her.

Didn't stop Windows Mobile 6.x ROMs, and it is a closed source/proprietary OS.

To a certain degree it did. Because Windows Mobile is closed source, most of the ROM mods and tools to modify the OS were basically hacks. With open source, we can compile and properly modify source code to fit any platform. You couldn't do that with Windows Mobile.

Actually, it is under open source, and if Apple is going to use it, they need to be open sourced also, which they aren't.

Also, with Android being developed by millions of people in forums like XDA and apple only being developed by the "applet minors", I see Android advancing faster than Apple-I hope!

The only problem is that there aren't being patents applied to the stuff that is being developed in forums like XDA. That creates a problem because you know as well as I do that Apple has their minions trolling these forums looking for new ideas that they can steal and patent themselves thus making all of the work the devs put into it completely useless.
Personally I say if you come up with something on here that's awesome, patent it. Don't use the patent for evil like apple just patent it and let it be open source. You would be the patent holder so you could let anyone use the product and it will help to stop evil companies like apple from destroying the phone market.

Like the idea. But patents cost way to much. Last I heard was over $1,100. But that's for sn actual product. Dunno if it differs for software. Or hardware I guess

Where does "prior art" come into play? If Android had it first and it wasn't able to be patented due to open source, Apple could come up with their own version but I would think they wouldn't be able to patent it (or at least not be able to use it against anyone) due to the "prior art" clause.

The patent is still pending. I'm sure Google will go after apple once the patent is awarded.

Correct. Also Android features would also be covered under prior art patent discovery rules.
Edit: sorry I missed the post related to prior art above, is correct. Apple could not patent open source Android based features due to the prior art clause.

Apple doesn't need the source code to copy an idea.

Steve Jobs actually said the reason for a one button mouse was so consumers wouldn't be confused as to why there is a second mouse button that doesn't really do anything, that tells you all you need to know about how Apple sees their customers

He was right. I've known a lot of people that don't ever use the right mouse button and don't know what it does. When you tell them how to do something they get confused between the left and right button and keep hitting the wrong one. I love it, I do almost everything with my mouse but I'm not the average computer user, my mom is. One button is simpler, that's why the iPhone and iPad only have 1 button. I've shown people how to do things on their Android phones and I get "I've never touched that button before" to that I ask "why not?" and the response "I didn't know what it did". My landlord had an Epic 4G for almost a year and one day I was commenting on the fact I wished my EVO had a camera button and she said "what camera button". I have a feeling that's why the iPhone doesn't have a dedicated camera button, it would confuse people.

While this is true they give you instructions with your devices. The it boils down to two things people being lazy and not reading. And two people being to scared to adventure to new things. There is zero reason for no one to understand the basics of the tech they own. It is their fault. Tech isn't hard on any level.

While I don't disagree with you, some people are more technologically inclined than others. I do agree that people are lazy. Although I seldom read them, everything comes with a manual. It's not like the early days of command line interfaces, everything is very simple now. Apple caters to the "I don't want to read, I just want to turn it on and use it" crowd.

This makes me giggle

Kind of a slap in the face to apple which is always worth a smile:

. Ok, so to make this seem like it is actually an important piece of news can anybody actually give any statistics showing that this was an item widely used and loved by people? I'm a clown, I know nothing about it. If you say google hired tim cook away from apple that means something to me. Google only paid 25 million for this outfit does that mean it sucks or will any of us android users benefit from this? Sorry to come off stupid but i am. Give me a little knowledge please and thank you.
Sparrow is loved by many people because although it can be used for multiple email services, it specializes and really shines with GMail. In fact, having used it, I can say it's almost better looking and more functional than our own Android GMail app. The desktop app for OS X (which I played with on my brother's Air) is fantastic, and I sorely wish we had something similar on Windows. Thunderbird just isn't what I want.
That being said, I don't know how this is a "slap in the face to Apple". The Sparrow team specifically said they're not dropping the app at all, and it will continue to receive support. If this makes you giggle, I guess you laugh very easily then...
True that they'll still support Apple, but would it be safe to say that Google won't want them supporting it as much as usual? I would think their attention will be elsewhere typically.

Anything that directly or indirectly affects apple in their gloat train does make me laugh. For google to purchase a company that up until today only supported apple, makes it a good day. True they'll still support apple as google already does, but it takes yet another item away that apple can say is 'theirs' per say.

I am unsure what you mean by "gloat train", and I'm not sure I agree with your opinion about "taking away an item", but that of course is your opinion.

And in a few a mod comes & shuts down another perfectly good thread. That stuff is getting really annoying

Sorry you feel that way. Threads get shut down when they get out of hand, you know, flaming, trolling, etc. So if this one can stay civil, then it will remain open.
"Google has struggled with its Gmail app for iOS. The company likely brought the Sparrow team in to help improve its Gmail experience on iOS and Mac, as well as potentially Android and PCs" This is a quote from mashable. So in reality It seems they are trying to make google and mac work better together. There could be no better outcome than that.

I know, i cant' help myself. I keep seeing people panicking over things that will probably mean nothing and it drives me nuts. I was on Appadvice today and they were basically having a "wake" for the Sparrow iOS app. The question that comes to mind is... "What about Chomp?" It was an app that help you when shopping for an app in the overcrowded Google Play Store but once Apple bought it...Poof! Gone!
Google's mobile branch makes most of its money thru Apple and Mac users. So, unless there is a google boycott from Apple causing a dip in the red, why would google stop supporting them?
Maybe got a little too ahead of myself. Just makes little sense for google to acquire Sparrow and have them continue to support Apple. That is until u know the details of what Sparrow makes and why Google acquired them. Not sure why Apple would mind Google sponsoring development of the gmail app for Mac.
If there is something I'm missing please let me know before calling me names, but shouldn't Apple be giggling?
